This video is incredible. I knew many of these things before watching, but learned about them in so much more depth and context with your demonstrations. I was engaged from beginning to end. Many instructors get lost in nerdgasming over details that barely have any visual effect. There is a good balance between useful information and true artistic perspective here. The video is extremely concise and easy to follow whether you're a novice or a professional. I would dare say that this video is more valuable than an entire semester in a basic photography course. Thank you so much for all of the time and effort you put into educating people out of pure passion for the art.
Absolutely outstanding! When I clicked on the thumbnail and saw how long the video was I thought to myself, " there is a very little chance ill sit through the entire thing. " Im happy to report I was very wrong, watched it in its entirety with my undivided attention from 0:00 to 52:23. I found it extremely informative, easy to understand and at times I chuckled, so it was also entertaining. Outstanding, thank you very much, i appreciate your time and effort.
Yes. Exactly what Sean Williams said. I was in the same boat. I only wish I had my DSLR in hand while I watched the video. I just ordered it yesterday and it should be here in a couple of days so I will rewatch and apply the techniques with camera in hand. Thanks!
Sean Williams , yeah I absolutely agree, it looks like I now get everything alright about the basics of photography and all the rest, God bless this video!
I watched your photography basics video for the first time about 2 months ago. I've sinced watched it at least three more times. It is so packed with useful information. I record my kids' soccer games and was so challenged to get proper exposure. Recording outdoors day and night, sunny and overcast, cloudy and in inclement weather. The constantly changing elements made understanding exposure and the DSLR camera even more challenging. I NOW GET IT! I understand proper exposure and how to get it given the circumstances AND I understand the tradeoffs when changing, shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Whether photography or video recording, this is a must-watch if you want to get correct exposure so that you can spend your time focusing on the subject.
You are unquestionably, indubitably, the BEST instructor ever that I've watched on video! (or in person, for that matter!) You are meticulous with each element of the material content that you expect to cover and you have a special ability to simplify even the most difficult concepts. Remarkable! Some people are experts in specific areas, but they lack the ability to effectively communicate/share their knowledge with others. However, not only are you an expert at what you teach, but you are an excellent teacher as well! (I was a teacher and "teacher mentor" for over 35 years - just retired.) I recently purchased my first DSLR camera and am a photography newbie. Since I "dabble" with various forms of fine arts, I decided to start learning how to use my camera not only to properly photograph my art work, but to capture scenes to use as sources for my art. I therefore thank you SO much for sharing such an excellent, resourceful, instructional video to help novices like me become more skilled in the use of the camera. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Thank you so very much for this video! I am new to SLR (or SLT, as I have bought the Sony a58 as a starter camera) and I have been looking for books/videos to help me get started. I can confidently state that after spending the last 50 minutes watching your lesson, I now feel far happier to start my journey. You made everything seem very simple which is always the making of a great teacher! Again, thank you :-)
Hey man, I just wanted to say thank you for making this video. Your explanations were very clear and concise. I just got a nice camera for the first time and this has really helped a lot. After watching your 52 minute video I can honestly say that I understand exposure better than an entire semester of photography in school years ago. If someone asks me to explain the basics (If I ever get to the point that someone is asking me for advice) I'll just show them your video. Keep up the good work and I hope you had a good holiday!
Absolutely fantastic! Thought I couldn't watch a 52 minutes video but I just did. I takes a lot of creativity for me to watch anything over 15 mins, never mind 52! Well done man, thank you so much for the knowledge, I've learned so much and I know exactly how much effort you put into this so it's very much appreciated!
WOW....!!!!! I've watched and listened to countless videos by so many different people, trying to explain the how to's and the what to's, and the why for's, so many times that it's crazy. And this is the first video that really explains in plain understandable words, just what photography and the how to is really about. You really hit it out of the park in explaining all the facets of why everything is done and how it relates, and what we need to master as photographers in order to hone our skills to perfection. You've made each aspect of photography understandably simple and easy to grasp. And I must say that this video was a master class itself, and thanks for doing it.
This is 'THE' best explanation video on how things work, and how to use the settings on your camera, I have ever seen. You take away all the mysteries and explain things in a very clear and understandable way. Thank you so much!
DiCasaFilm I woke up out of my sleep hearing your teachings, and it was the best class ever. The way you explained everything was amazing! Thank You and please continue to educate the world. Dah
Let me tell you that you are truly a gifted educator. I have met hundreds of so called educators who cannot get info across in a palatable way. I think that even though I knew most of what you taught but I had to keep watching because you are so clear. It did not seem you had a script or tele prompter but you still rocked it. I really encourage you to take up teaching of some sort. It is pretty clear that you are an excellent communicator. Not sure how anyone could give you a thumbs down. Keep up the tremendous work.
For someone like me who's had his DSLR on Auto mode from the day it was bought and has been wanting to explore what it's capable of this video has been a godsend. I'll be out this weekend with my camera, trying to capture just how beautiful the trees look at this time of year feeling a bit more confident when I set it to Manual. This has been by far the clearest and most concise video I've seen on the subject. If you aren't educating people as a profession, you should consider it, as you're a natural. Thanks!
dude seriously, this video is a master class. I just got my first dlsr, a canon 700D T5i and I've been doing a lot of research and learning, especially for video. I learned so much from this one class than in the last 30 videos I've watch. Thanks.
Hey Steve! I just started making RUclips videos... and was finding it really difficult to figure out the camera settings. Your video was a LIFE SAVER. You've explained everything so amazingly! I have recommended your video to a lot of my friends who've aldo just started out! Thanks a tonne! Love from India.. 😊
Guys! Part 2 of this video is up! Continue your lesson and learning by checking out my video "The Light Meter" Watch here: ruclips.net/video/U33Uxtt7474/видео.html
DiCasaFilm Hi there, I was fascinated by your video it was really engaging and one of the best I've seen. I'm actually a TV cameraman here in England but I like to watch these things out of interest. Shutter angle is interesting as I had a friend also a TV camera op, shooting on a Red epic camera and he had no knowledge of shutter angle that needed to be considered for a particular shot. Fortunately a technician came with the camera hire and explained it to him. Anyway not sure you were clear on F stops. If you do know this then forgive me, F means factor and the number relates to the number of times the opening made by the shutter blades open / close goes into the shutter hole wide open. So F22 means you could fit 22 of the opening or hole into a fully open shutter or the whole area of the lens. Anyway thanks again. Love your videos and will certainly watch more as its always good to refresh ones knowledge.
I want to start getting into videography and am currently doing some research on what camera I should buy. I want to make car videos which would be composed of a lot of in car perspective shots as well as exterior tracking shots. It would primarily be filmed in daylight and include a lot of wide scenery clips. Any advice on a what camera I should get. It's a bit overwhelming right now as this kind of thing is a bit foreign to me. I'm currently looking at the the A7s and the Canon 60D and 70D. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
+DiCasaFilm Yeah ill start that one in a few but first i want to say thank you. that was an awesomely done and thought out presentation. I appreciate it with myself being one of the last being one of the last few film dinosaurs (with the exceptions of some point and shoots) you made the start of my of the transition understandable and even somewhat fun. peace.
You're so good at teaching so that we can understand. You're not rushing or asking me to "click here" for the full lesson that costs me a grand lol. I love it!
OMG!! I got a DSLR for Christmas and I'm a newby photographer. I'm sure I've watched 80% of the learning tutorials that are available on youtube and without a doubt, your tutorial is the absolute best out there!! Thank you for explaining it so indepth so it made sense to me. Up till now, I've found it very frustrating. Again, thank you for sharing your craft and I will definately watch the rest of your videos. Cheers, Debbra
Superb video for new photographers! I have been using a LUMIX compact for 2 years and have had some results I am happy with.....But I wanted to get more involved in photography and learn how to create effects with the camera rather than in post. So, I have now upgraded to a Sony Alpha 200 DSLR.....This video explained everything so clearly and was so easy to understand, that after 2 days of owning a DSLR, I already feel confident enough to take it off AUTO and rely on my own settings and get creative! I am particularly interested in taking night shots now, which was never really possible with the compact, so the info on F-Stops and Shutter speeds was vital for me! I see blurry stars and much movement in my future photographs, thanks to this guy!
Great work, honestly hands down the best tutorial. Adding in the info for people leaning more towards video was very helpful. You're a very good teacher. You speak like a regular dude like me which helped if that makes sense. You made it sound simpler and easier for people like me that have a hard time learning about the ISO, Aperture and shutter speeds, I'm not that smart so I had to watch this video a couple of times to let it sink in more. I'm finally getting past learning and actually doing some photography. Thank you very much. Now I just have to practice, practice, practice.
This was fantastic!! Thank you Steve for the easy way that you explained everything. I have read many books on photography and have been shooting a little here and there, but never really understood and was always frustrated until now. I totally understand it now after watching your video and taking notes. Thank you so much for lending your time and skills to make this video for those of us that love photography but didn't exactly get all the variables on the camera. Happy film making! Later.
Hi, I just took up photography. I bought a canon 70D and a canon G7X and a Nikon P900. Dslr seem so confusing to me. But this video has helped me so much. I had doing a Vlog in mind. I am 64 woman, widow, but I think young. You are a great teacher! As well as super personality on film. I can't tell you how much I appreciate this teaching. You have made these 3 settings seem easy and understandable and now usable for me. I have watched twice but will watch 5 more times so I can recall easily what you've taught. I can tell you put a ton of effort preparing this teaching. Plus you showed me how my camera works. I so hope you do a lot more tutorials bc you are so talented in teaching. The 52 minutes went by like time flying I was enthralled the whole video. Please do more tutorials I have a hard time understanding the manuals and even books on cameras, I want so much to become an accomplished or really good photographer as well as videoagrapher. I even bought a steadycam outfit for video. It took me about 5 hours just to figure out the steadycam hardware I haven't begun trying to put a camera on it yet. I am 64 I do not have years to learn this stuff so I need a teacher actually you. Most tutorials are crap for me but you were the perfect teacher. So please make more teaching videos to help me! I have a burning passion to do photography and video graph even my dad and son were and are photographers. It runs in my family. So please help me out! You are brilliant! Thank you Linda Reeves Leach. I hate my last name.
I hate to be repetitive to everyone elses comments but this was the best tutorial!! I dont know too much on how everyone else learns but i tend to pick up on things when people are speaking with energy and speed!! Slow speaking teachers dint do it for me and i tend to lose interest or forget easily. Thanks bro! Much love
I very rarely comment on RUclips but feel I have to after watching this whole video. If only my teachers were as good as you when I was in school 10 years ago! I might be a millionaire by now :P Quality video, quality teaching and very easy to follow explanations. Not to mention, funny :D Thank you so much. A+++++
You're the perfect tutor! Extremely educated yet you are animated, expressive and funny, which makes this video so enjoyable. I love that you give examples and analogies that help people understand unfamiliar concepts! I learned so much! 10/10
Out of all the videos I've watched trying to research and learn my camera you are the first to really break it down for me to where I can really understand. Thank you
Dude you rule. This is so well done, you've got a gift. And when you managed to get the words "shitty" and "Parallax" in the same breath I knew you were instruction video gold. Love it. Hope there's more.
wow! fantastic explanation of everything! I'm a complete novice and you made all of that make perfect sense! I'm lucky enough to have the 5D mkII so that really helped me personally as the screen etc is the same haha when will you be doing a part II to this? I'd really like to get to know what the next steps are, you touched briefly on frame rates and then said you were starting to talk about more advanced things. I'd love to see a video where you go into that. Any plans for it?
Yes! I just got access to the RUclips Space in NYC and I will be making more tutorials there. The next to come will be a Light Meter tutorial which is the sequel to this video. Then I want to do a focus tutorial.
I honestly consider this tutorial as being the best beginners tutoarial in photography I ve ever seen. And is not only how you divided it and how you clearly outlined the topics, but is also the fact that you understand what we might not understand. You know when to outline what you ve just said and also when to go deeper. Adding to this some subtle sense of humor, I just subscribed :)
“I'm a working photographer. I've always been intimidated by video, mainly due not understanding the functions of all of the gear that goes along with it. Within the first 20 minutes of watching the video guide that fear was gone.” I highly recommend these guys...link below
Very watchable, you should go into teaching, you're a natural. This must be one of the very few youtube vids where the watcher is not bombarded by the verbal tic and over use of ‘you guys’ every few seconds, congratulations on this.
I can't thank you enough.. even your audio lesson helped me a lot.. I've seen a million videos on youtube didn't learn a thing.. can't take out time for a professional course with my busy schedules but you have solved all my issues.. thank you so so much.. as an amateur filmmaker I can say you're doing a noble thing(in literal sense)...
!!!THANK YOU!!! I just bought my first DSLR, this is a fantastic tutorial. Excellent teacher. I wanted to comment on the Aperture Settings and how confusing it can be. The lower the number the larger the iris, the higher the number the smaller the iris. When you described the By-Product of the Aperture Setting I now think of it as: The lower the number the Shorter the Depth of Field, the Higher the number the Further the Depth of Field. Just wanted to point that out. Thanks again man! looking to learn much more from you.
Thank you for this awesome tutorial. I'm moving into a position at work that requires knowledge of DSLRs and now I feel more comfortable with them. Plus whenever I pick up one of my own i'll know how to get started! Your teaching is great, good for both visual and auditory learners. Also you throw in humor often enough to hold interest. Keep the awesome work up!
I accidentally run info your tutorial while I was looking for some vloging tips. Until now i didn't have a clue about photo/video shooting and that stuff, now after this video all important and key concepts about topic are clear as day. I'm telling you this because I'm professional in teacher education and your teaching and lecturing skills are remarkable and highly professional. Great work!
What is proper exposure? Every photogs goal. You need to have something usable. You can't bring it back.j Fstop/Aperture ISO Shutterspeed [Shutter Fstop ------------ISO] DLSR Anatomy of the Camera: Digital Single Lens Reflex Some Cameras have multiple lenses. What you see is what the lens will see. How? How does it work? Light Beams in => Bounces off one mirror => Into another mirror => Into your Eye [] You hit the shutter release. [] The Mirror moves UP out of dway (so I guess your light goes) []The Shutter (accordion) OPENS and makes a tunnel to the sensor []The sensor makes the image. It turns Pixels into Image *view Finder not other part Aperture - FSTOP It is a hole. inside the lens (idk where). Aperture Fully Open = More Light Aperture closed =Less Light Shooting somehting bright = Smaller aperture Shooting something dark = larger aperture The hole is called the IRIS. When you change the aperture using DLSR you do it digitally and the software manipulates the IRIS. Shutter- Accordion How long shutter is open for. For really fast shots set a faster shutterspeed. 1/50 of a second. 3 Stops Equal an aperture notch Videography -Shutterspeed 180 Degree Perfect spot take your FPS * 2 = your shutter speed 1/50 second. For TV: 30FPS *2= 60th ISO - Light sensitivity- Brightness 100-6400 1/3 of a stop each interval Brightness to grain . Brighter = More grainy Very good in low light. Native ISO = Magic Numbers 1.Shutter =how long gate open 2. ISO Sensitivity brightness grain 3. Iris size how much light let in tunnel Depth of Field Small hole = Shallow Focus F/4 large hole = Shallow Depth of Field Style Weapons Shutterspeed = blur ISO= bright and grain Fstop = Depth of Field/FOCUS How to use these tools Together 1.Decide what style you are going for 2. Lock off One setting 3. Manipulate the other 2 Example: 1. The style we want is deep focus 2. We know that depth of field is related to a high Fstop so we set it to the highest. 3. Now what is left is manipulate our ISO and Our Shutter speed. With a high Fstop Very little light is coming in, so what we can do is manipulate our shutter speed to increase the light. Make your shutter speed slower = more light coming in. For Our ISO = Raise it to be more sensitive.
I bought my teenagers and myself DSLR cameras so we can tap into our creative side and film... despite the cursing, I am going to have them watch this video to begin to learn the basics of the tool they've been given. It is an awesome gift to be able to break down complex information into understandable, useable and relatable information. I definitely like and subscribed. Best believe Im coming to your page to learn whatever is put on your heart and mind to teach. Many Thanks :)
Its just fantastic how low level, beginner friendly this Video is. I watched it years ago, when i was learning, and now, even if we are using only mirrorless cameras, my doughter is watching it. Just great, thank you so much
I've been using DSLR's for many years. Learned the hard way, manuals, books, video's, whatever I could get my hands on at the time of needing to figure out how to do this or that. Started with a Canon 50D and now I use the 5D Mk II. But even with my extensive trial and error experience, I found this video to be very informative, reminding me of the basics and something new... Didn't know about backing off a stop from the native ISO for less grain. Excellent tutorial!
True. As a beginner it can feel backwards. And I feel making a big fuss over that is a good way for a beginner to remember. Gets out the frustration, too. Haha.
I have struggled with this subject for some time, I even took a class on the basics of photography, and I was just not getting it. Now after seeing the image that you posted, it all is very clear to me, and my understanding is becoming more clear, thank you very much!!
this has to be one of THE BEST basic tutorials for photography I have ever seen. Great Job! I felt like I was taking a college class at home without even having to pay for it. Great examples and explanations. Simple and effective. I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Absolutely fantastic video!- I love the way you visually and emotively engage your body in order to put scary facts across. I have my Bachelor's degree in Fine Art and Photography (not a beginner) and yet this video visually clarified things to me in a way I will never forget. Please don't stop - you are a fantastic teacher for creatives.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I started a video company and knew nothing about this stuff. I have achieved my style just from watching this and knowing how to use my d4s. I can't tell you how much I appreciated this video from beginning to end!!! Oh and lmao at the outro! Great job!!!
Very very helpful! Thank you so much! For the aperture and f-stop numbers, one trick I learned to remember that, is that the f-stop number is basically the distance from the circular "walls" of the lens itself, to the opening of the aperture. The lower the f-stop number, the less distance there is between the opening and the lens, which means that the aperture will be bigger.
Great tutorial. Better than the last 5 I've watched put together. I really appreciate how you not only teach the fundamentals in depth, but you facilitate the learning process by giving context and theoretical situations and how to apply the knowledge.
This is probably the best in-depth video I have ever seen. I've seen lots of other videos but none like yours. After watching the video I now feel more confident and understand the functions of my Nikon D5100. I have a few lenses but never knew why I couldn't get perfectly focused photos of my child running. I would almost always be so pissed off, I would just go to the Autofocus feature. Now I can at least muddle through the problem. Thank you so much.
This was not boring at all. At the beginning when I saw how long it is, I wasn't very eager to watch, but I did. Before I knew it, I was already more than half way through it. Very effective, informative, and entertaining. Thank you.
You are absolutely phenomenal.🤯 Thank you for this tutorial, it was extremely cogent and professional… I’m tuned in👌🏾 you have yourself a new sub. Lol. Keep up the awesome work, and wishing you the best in all your endeavors!
Awesome, I took Photography classes more than 30 years ago, now I got a cool DSLR, and this video refreshed my knowledge in a very simple, fast and even fun way. Thank you.
Learnt photography from this tutorial two years back...never looked back since..I just realised that I didn't say Thank You Steve...thanks a ton for changing my life ...
i can feel your passion for sharing your precious knowledge with other people. your prep and method were much appreciated. if u come to hawaii, i will take you to lunch. thank you again for your being open-minded.
For now the only thing I have about photography is Passion, so I usually keep digging videos and reading stuff on internet. The way you have put things in your video is simply impeccable. I couldn't have asked for anything more. Hope to see more like this. THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS AND SHARE- WITH UTMOST REGARD FROM INDIA
Coming back after a year and this is still the best explanation for beginners and also a good refresher for filmmakers and photographers alike. Amazing Steve. Thank you so much.
WOW! Love your approach. Been doing this for 18 years. I didnt learn anything new but I never seen it put in layman's terms like this. I will be sending everyone I know who want to learn this to your page. Great Job.
I am new to photography so I have been watching a lot of tutorials. That being the case, I had a pretty good understanding on how these things worked before watching your video. But, your examples really drive the point home. This is by far the best and most understandable video I have seen. Great job!!
I'm pretty new with my DSLR and this was exactly what I needed to better understand how changing the settings affected my photos. I'm very excited to move forward. Thank you.
Thank you SO SO SO much for taking the time to do this. I have had my camera for 5 years and always used the auto settings, I am SUPER excited to start playing with it after learning what some of the settings are and what they mean. You rock!
Thank you Steve, it is the best DSLR video lesson I have seen thanks again, I promise if I get to be even a 10% of the professional you are to give back to the community a video in Spanish.
Thank you so so much for this video. I just got my first DSLR after taking one too many pictures on my phone and saving for a long long time I was so happy to get it but then had no idea what to do your video just made me get excited about my new camera and photography again
I have watched 100 videos trying to learn this information really looking for a blurry background in video making and you have produced the first video that actually helped me by supplying information I didnt know how to ask for.
BRAVO!!! BRAVO!!! Thank you so much! I've had a DSLR for 5 yrs and had no idea how to use it. I'm going to AFRICA in June and gonna buy the Canon SL2- from my Canon Rebel T3. I so enjoyed your tutorial. Energetic, fun, and a sense of humor. Thank you so much!
Thank you, I studied Photography about 20 years ago but never really persued it, now I'm going back to it, this was like being at school again. Thank you soooo much!
This is brilliant!! It's to the point with a great breakdown going into a perfect amount of detail with DSLR lenses and creating a proper exposure. This morning I paused and took notes like Steve says. I ended up with 8 sheets of notes on my 5x8 notepad. Lots of notes but also tried to copy his great examples he wrote on the board. A great bonus at the end!! It explains and summarizes a fun easy example. I really appreciate the video!!
Wow! This is the best tutorial I've ever seen not only on photography/videography but in general. I've been trying to get my head around this subject for a while but always found it boring and very complex. Now, after watching you, I can start to appreciate it so much more and start to practice with some tiny basics! Awesome work, keep it up man! :) Thank youuu
Thank you so so much for this tutorial. I have my very first dslr and was getting really frustrated because all of my videos end up grainy. Thank you so much for breaking it down to the basics, this is exactly what I needed!
I am a newcomer in the field of photography. I got a DSLR camera as a reward from my client, but was not know how to use it to take perfect shot. Your this tutorial is really helpful for beginner like me :-) It helps a lot for understanding the basics. Thanks!
This is hands down the best breakdown of the basic settings I have seen so far. Very well explained. I feel like I'm finally getting to know my DSLR! Thank you SO. MUCH. seriously. :)
That is the best tutorial I've watched so far! Just bought a canon 70d for food blogging and still struggling with the set ups for shooting videos since it is often closed ups shots but I've learned a lot watching this.Thank's
I am on my way to shoot the 2015 Doo Dah parade, today Nov 22. I am very impressed by your instructions. As a novice filmmaker, I really need this info. Bravo to you.
I am humbled by your comment. From somewhere deep in me, I thank you. Really. This means a lot.
DiCasaFilm She's right man. There's a lot of videos out there that just bore the shit out of you but yours was enticing throughout. Good job bro.
DiCasaFilm Skye Chevolleau Said it all...Thanks
yep, same here :)
You are so right. "More valuable than an entire semester in a basic photography course!" I couldn't agree more. I agree with your entire comment.
Thanks!
300% agree with Sean's comment! thank you, thank you so much
Sean Williams Thank you everyone. You guys are awesome!
So true ,me too but i watched it till the end
Sean Williams , yeah I absolutely agree, it looks like I now get everything alright about the basics of photography and all the rest, God bless this video!
thats the most helpfull video i've ever seen on the youtube. thank you.
I agree. Absolutely Excellent
totally agree
I watched your photography basics video for the first time about 2 months ago. I've sinced watched it at least three more times. It is so packed with useful information. And he is young to boot! Crazy good teacher...and easy to watch.
SheepDog7071 Yes! Phenomenal teacher!
Again, thank you :-)
Thank you for watching and commenting. A journey of a thousand photos begins with one exposure... that was horrible. Anyway, good luck!
Thank you so much! Yes definitely share this video with any beginners you know. That would be amazing. Hope you had a great holiday as well!
Thanks!
I feel you
Guys like you make me love RUclips, this is better than the whole workshop day. Thanks my friend!
Absolutely the best explanation of basic photography on RUclips. Great video!
Thanks, Michael. That means a lot. I was thinking about teaching first year film/video at my alma mater.
Thanks.
Thank you. Thanks for watching. :)
Love your videos and will certainly watch more as its always good to refresh ones knowledge.
awesome stuff..
I appreciate it with myself being one of the last being one of the last few film dinosaurs (with the exceptions of some point and shoots) you made the start of my of the transition understandable and even somewhat fun. peace.
Sir, you are the great
You're so good at teaching so that we can understand. You're not rushing or asking me to "click here" for the full lesson that costs me a grand lol. I love it!
Best tutorial for understanding basic use of a SLR camera. Thank you. I can tell you put a lot of time into this.
Marc Morgan Thank you! Make sure you watch part 2. Link in description.
Steven DiCasa: enlightening the would-be filmmakers of the universe one tutorial at a time.
Damn straight.
Great video!
I just bought the 70D and this is the best video i have ever seen! Thanks!
Thank you!
I have the same camera and this video really helped, awesome!
The best photography tutorial on RUclips hands down. Thank you
Cheers,
Debbra
I learnt about DSLR camera every basic information from you that I can't find anywhere on RUclips. Thanks a lot, you are the professional.
You sound smart to me.
Later.
Thank you so much!

Thanks bro! Much love
This was fantastic, you are an amazing teacher, it all makes sense now. Thank you
Nisha
I very rarely comment on RUclips but feel I have to after watching this whole video.
If only my teachers were as good as you when I was in school 10 years ago! I might be a millionaire by now :P
Quality video, quality teaching and very easy to follow explanations.
Not to mention, funny :D
Thank you so much. A+++++
Thank you so much, my man!
You're the God, man. I've never seen such good explanation about the basics. Thank you.
I am no god. But thank you. Hahaha.
Thank you
This video was perfect. Thank you i feel like i have a way better grasp on my camera in general now. Game changer.
I'm lucky enough to have the 5D mkII so that really helped me personally as the screen etc is the same haha
when will you be doing a part II to this?
The instructor explained this is and afterwards i had no clue what he was talking about, 52 minutes with your and I got it down packed. Your awesome.
Thanks! Also: down pat* :-P
+DiCasaFilm and you're* awesome. :-P
You are ONE cool guy , to be giving us newbies all this info. THANKS a million.
“I'm a working photographer. I've always been intimidated by video, mainly due not understanding the functions of all of the gear that goes along with it. Within the first 20 minutes of watching the video guide that fear was gone.”
I highly recommend these guys...link below
thanks :)
pm me the link please
*Highly recommend* t.co/uuCX7cZ0iU
Very watchable, you should go into teaching, you're a natural. This must be one of the very few youtube vids where the watcher is not bombarded by the verbal tic and over use of ‘you guys’ every few seconds, congratulations on this.
Andy Ballard Thanks Andy. :)
Super awesome way to think about it!
Great tutorial, I learned a lot...
Same
Fantastic tutorial! Well done and thanks.
Thanks!
Fantastic tutorial!!!!!! Thank you so much for the help
You're welcome. :)
Thanks man!
Great work!
"At speeds that are Retarded" LoLoud!!!! You videos are great man!
What is proper exposure?
Every photogs goal.
You need to have something usable.
You can't bring it back.j
Fstop/Aperture
ISO
Shutterspeed
[Shutter Fstop ------------ISO]
DLSR Anatomy of the Camera:
Digital Single Lens Reflex
Some Cameras have multiple lenses. What you see is what the lens will see.
How?
How does it work?
Light Beams in => Bounces off one mirror => Into another mirror => Into your Eye
[] You hit the shutter release.
[] The Mirror moves UP out of dway (so I guess your light goes)
[]The Shutter (accordion) OPENS and makes a tunnel to the sensor
[]The sensor makes the image. It turns Pixels into Image
*view Finder not other part
Aperture - FSTOP
It is a hole. inside the lens (idk where).
Aperture Fully Open = More Light
Aperture closed =Less Light
Shooting somehting bright = Smaller aperture
Shooting something dark = larger aperture
The hole is called the IRIS. When you change the aperture using DLSR you do it digitally and the software manipulates the IRIS.
Shutter- Accordion
How long shutter is open for.
For really fast shots set a faster shutterspeed.
1/50 of a second.
3 Stops Equal an aperture notch
Videography -Shutterspeed
180 Degree
Perfect spot
take your
FPS * 2 = your shutter speed
1/50 second.
For TV:
30FPS *2= 60th
ISO - Light sensitivity- Brightness
100-6400
1/3 of a stop each interval
Brightness to grain .
Brighter = More grainy
Very good in low light.
Native ISO = Magic Numbers
1.Shutter
=how long gate open
2. ISO
Sensitivity brightness grain
3. Iris size
how much light let in tunnel
Depth of Field
Small hole = Shallow Focus
F/4 large hole = Shallow Depth of Field
Style Weapons
Shutterspeed = blur
ISO= bright and grain
Fstop = Depth of Field/FOCUS
How to use these tools Together
1.Decide what style you are going for
2. Lock off One setting
3. Manipulate the other 2
Example:
1. The style we want is deep focus
For Our ISO = Raise it to be more sensitive.
benja303 These are some awesome notes!
DiCasaFilm Thanks for making it so easy to learn from.
U are my teacher from now on, u even made me laugh at some points i really liked u
Just great, thank you so much
Very easy to onderstand, thanks a lot.
This was excellent, thank you.
OMG THIS HELPED SO MUCH THANK YOU
I've been using DSLR's for many years.
As a new DSLR owner, this is the BEST beginner video on youtube, hands down!!!!! You are a fabulous teacher.
God bless you man. That's all i can say.
"How the f*** do you spell staccato" HAHAHAHAAH
It's because F/Stops are fractions. So F/1.8 is really 1/1.8 vs F/22 which is really 1/22. 1/1.8 is larger than 1/22
True. As a beginner it can feel backwards. And I feel making a big fuss over that is a good way for a beginner to remember. Gets out the frustration, too. Haha.
+DiCasaFilm That's actually a really good piece of advice that I might use in the future to teach people
I have struggled with this subject for some time, I even took a class on the basics of photography, and I was just not getting it. Now after seeing the image that you posted, it all is very clear to me, and my understanding is becoming more clear, thank you very much!!
One of the most comprehensive tutorials covering "Exposure, Aperture and ISO"
Thank you DiCasa, good job, very helpful.
this has to be one of THE BEST basic tutorials for photography I have ever seen.
Thank you!
Thanks so much!
Awesome, I took Photography classes more than 30 years ago, now I got a cool DSLR, and this video refreshed my knowledge in a very simple, fast and even fun way.
Thank you.
I love the way you explain this ..it's like dumbed down perfectly for me ( and I mean that in the most positive way)..thanks man..love it.
Learnt photography from this tutorial two years back...never looked back since..I just realised that I didn't say Thank You Steve...thanks a ton for changing my life ...
I love how you illustrate & explain the anatomy of the camera.. That really helps understand what each of the settings control! Awesome teacher!
i can feel your passion for sharing your precious knowledge with other people. your prep and method were much appreciated. if u come to hawaii, i will take you to lunch.
thank you again for your being open-minded.
If my girlfriend and I can stay on your couch then I'll definitely come to Hawaii. Hahaha. :)
I'm 11 mins in and absolutely loving this tutorial...you've got a great teaching style. Thank you for sparing the time....now back to the vid !
Hell yeah! Glad you like it!
For now the only thing I have about photography is Passion, so I usually keep digging videos and reading stuff on internet. The way you have put things in your video is simply impeccable. I couldn't have asked for anything more. Hope to see more like this.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS AND SHARE-
WITH UTMOST REGARD FROM INDIA
Thank you!!
Thank you.
i never knew i would sit through the 52+ minutes of this lecture. its was interesting and the humour you brought to it kept me locked in
Thank you SO SO SO much for taking the time to do this.
Wow. Best description I've heard or read about DSLR Basics. You're a natural teacher.
Thanks SO much!
You have a gift for teaching. I've been searching for a DSLR tutorial like this for ages. Thank you!
