ABANDONED Island Plantation Resort

- Опубликовано: 3 окт 2024
- Today we visit a secluded, abandoned plantation resort on an island off the coast of South Carolina. It began in the 1980's as a family destination and soon became wrapped up in a massive fraud ploy which scammed investors out of over $25 million. Today we tell the story and find out whats left from this massive Ponzi scheme which left this resort now abandoned.

Every time you open your videos with old promotional material and then juxtapose it with the modern abandoned state of the place, it gives me chills.
It's so well done.
That's my favorite part
Dan Bell does this too.
Ikr the contrasts are mind boggling....
I love everything about it, definitely my favorite part.
I was thinking the same thing...the producing and editing is so good.
The effort you put into your films shows. There is a lot of noise out there on RUclips, but you continue to provide a solid/informative product every time.
That means a lot to me, thank you!
My wife and I lived and worked at Melrose for a couple years. If there ever was karma, this is it. The native Gullah that lived and worked there and had to leave for survival after the oyster beds were shut down due to pollution from the Savannah river had their land confiscated. Most of them had no deeds of record of where they were born and lived. The property was aquired by the developers for next to nothing from the state. Since then it seems that it has been and endless money pit for get rich quick investors. There are beautiful and bloody stories about Daufuskie, a rich history to be remembered. Fortunately the resort and golf club will rot and be consumed by the mold and rot it deserves.
“Yeah, I may need my respirator...” - there’s your contender for understatement of the year, 2019 edition. That was some serious mold there...
Maybe he'd put THAT on the back of one of his shirts. Or, many of them!
SpeakingTheTruthMediaLive I’ve had some hazmat training and experience over the years. The mold in that resort looked ready to reach out and grab you 🙃!
2 years, looks like it’s been abandoned for 20.
It's the sea.
@@The_Str4nger yeah salt does some nasty shit to buildings
Plus the hurricane didn't help either....
@@jaybee2344 yeah that can do it
I think it's been abandoned since 2010. The Ponzi scheme guys didn't do anything to the resort.
I stayed there in the early 2000s with family. Sad to hear it is no longer open and is now in a ruined state.
Also, I do remember the people working for the boat rental at the resort's beach being very unconcerned when we were nearly washed out to sea and had to have someone tow us back because of the strong currents, they weren't hiring competent staff back when we stayed there.
The kitchen equipment looked salvageable, those big mixers aren't cheap.
Yeah the equipment themselves were actually in pretty good condition!
Yeah, I saw a vulcan brand appliance
I want that pepsi cooler
Oh my gosh! You’re right! Ugh! Such a shame.... 😞
Bryan Snodgrass: Yeah, but if their motors or insides got wet and sat there and rusted inside they're probably not usable or repairable.
The salt water will destoy everything. This hasn't been abandoned for that long and it looks like it hasn't been used for many many years. And the erosion will just swallow it whole. Growing up on an island it costs millions and billions to renurish the sand. Dredging is a huge deal.
Savannah Hendrickson please tell me you have a tongue piercing.
Shocked you don’t run into a drug deal going on or people sleeping when you walk into empty rooms
yeah I'm really surprised there aren't squatters there, especially seeing that there are some really nice beds still there. If the locks on those doors work, all you'd have to do is board up those windows and you'd have a functioning dry place to sleep that would keep out all but the most determined looters.
There aren't enough people there. It's really humid. Also this island can only be accessed by boat.
Actually, the Savannah area is quite safe from most of that. A considerable amount of its economy is tourism, and a lot of families and youngercouples make up the demographic as well. In fact, as a resident of Georgia and frequent visitor of this area of the state, it quite a safe area.
There was a squatter in his abandoned mansion video. The gentleman was actually a very nice artist that had taken residence in an abandoned mansion.
Went here today, there were literally a bunch of 10 years olds w their parents running around the place lol, seemed pretty safe, didn’t go inside
That ocean erosion is just like what we have up here in Washington State with what is called "Washaway Beach" down by Tokeland. A whole neighborhood was swallowed up. The road is closed because it now ends in a crumbling cliff and every year it gets eaten up more & more. The craziest thing I've ever seen there is the house was gone but a solitary toilet was still standing on the stand pipe.
@Bill Williams lmfao yeah it would just be a pain in the a$$ to climb the ten feet or so that it was in the air.
I love the transitioning from before and after pics. Its crazy how things get destroyed slowly with time.
Hey, I just came back from Thanksgiving vacation on Daufuski. A couple things to note since it wasn't mentioned. First, people live in Melrose. There's a community of homes, beach cabanas and condos all along the Ave. of Oaks and there is a restaurant at the end of the circle. While some residents are hoping upon hope that things will turn around, others are happy to get into a cabana on the beach(literally) for cheap. The chance of someone turning the community around diminishes every year, with two of the 18 holes being swallowed by the sea, severe damage caused by urbex tourists and overgrowth. The residents have completely boarded over the community center to try to salvage what's left of it and save it from the fate of the hotel across the street.
There's a ton more history to it but basically, the island could not support two mammoth golfing resorts. Haig Point survived while Melrose did not.
Really odd that they just left all that really expensive kitchen equipment there.
I thought that also but if you look on google maps it becomes easier to understand. It's an island with only ferry access. I would guess nobody wants to pay the transportation to get anything out of there.
@@farmcentralohio That's exactly the problem; transporting anything off the island would cost more than it's worth, even if it was intact. For scrap metal value, forget it.
What a sad waste. I guess none of those wedding parties will be returning to celebrate any anniversaries.
Court ordered sale sounds like a great investment, count me in.
As the theft continues just like that. Abandoned or where are they from international to here or there. Courts in deep. Fishy circumstances ...they never til ...my opinion plus
What a shame, such a beautiful place. The dinning room was gorgeous.
I rather like the videos where there is more narration about the history of the place and how it got abandoned. Too much "exploration" makes the videos boring. Decay is always the same.
I know, I can only imagine how amazing the view would be at sunset.
Absolutely! That’s what makes his videos so great.
10:47 I love how someone just spray painted ni**a beans
oh all the things to spray paint, they chose that 💀
I hope whoever wrote that crap, grows, toxic, mold, in their weak-ass, lungs, yeah, that sounds like good, fun, let the hilarity begin; haha--heee!🤣🥴
Just why would someone write that: I'm so obsessed with black that's why!?
it’s not that deep zelda
Why is that even something to point out to get the comments stirred up...?

I’m currently working through Black Friday, pray for my sanity so that I can watch this when I’m done.

I was trying to figure out why Daufuskie Island sounded so familiar to me, because I couldn't place it in my head. But once I realized where you were exactly, it all clicked - I've been to Hilton Head plenty of times.
Same!
Wow, this is so sad!! I literally live across the river in Savannah, GA and have never heard about this place. Dafuskie and Hilton Head are such beautiful islands; it’s such a shame to see a place like this abandoned.
Same!!

I worked here for a few years and I honestly don't think the resort ever turned a profit. The biggest issue is the fact that everything has to come by boat since there is no bridge. When I left there were a few houses that had already been reclaimed by the ocean. Sad to see it the way it is now.
Really wild you uploaded this. I was just on daufuskie this summer and drove past this and was curious about it.
Thanks for sharing...I read the comments just to see if anyone had stayed here or seen it in person since it closed so recently. Super weird!
@@LazySusan. yeah I’ve seen it in person I had no idea it was a resort it was huge
You can't get anything scarier than real life. I love watching these abandoned place vids!
Keep em up Jake. Your content never lets me down. Been watching since 2017. Your super Factual which makes it even better to watch. 👌🏻👍🏻
Thank you so much Jeffrey that means a lot to me! There’s a lot more to come, especially next month!
I love your videos ... especially your history of the property’s and insightful information.
Agreed, though Jake didn’t give as much back story/context on this one. I didn’t even know where this was until the end. More narration next time Jake 👍
That was a well applianced kitchen right there. Some of that stuff ain't cheap.
I went through it several times from 2011-13 and it doesn't look a lot worse now, except for all the broken windows, but we've had 3 or 4 hurricanes since then. It's a cool island to hang out for a day, and the other half of island facing Hilton Head is in much better shape. Just wish someone so shady didn't end up buying it, but eventually nature will take it back and that's probably for the best. Great video.
I know a trio of families, very wealthy families, who were approached very early on to invest in the property.....Those families did not become wealthy by being stupid and refused to invest or have anything else to do with the property in question.
Yet another excellent installment of 'Abandoned!' Thanks for making such great documentaries! 👏👏👏
Thank you for wearing your respirator.
So, my elder brother lost a ton of $$ from that jerk. Long story but a lot of innocent NOT STINKIN RICH people just going about life get hurt - bad - when these things unravel
Forget that gun! Go get a pimp and pimp the hell out of those monsters and then call the cartels involve and tell them that you have a big sale- buy 3 get 1 free deals!!!!!
That's awful! Nobody should have to go through that. Did your brother ever get any of his money back?
they expected 12% return- fools
Another fun fact: Daufuskie Island can only be accessed by boat. There is no bridge leading to the island. This is a big factor as to why the resort wasn’t successful.
Another fun fact: There are no police on the island, no grocery stores, or hospitals. Since there are no police, it is very easy for people to explore this abandoned area.
I was just thinking of this resort. I had seen a travel channel episode on it and thought it would be a great family reunion getaway but could never remember the name of the resort. I saw your title and was like...I bet that’s the resort! Sure enough it was. Sad to see it in its current state. Hopefully someone honest buys it and restores it.
Just needs some new paint and the carpets shampoo'd.....
and we're back up and running!!!
Dang. I used to live near Dafuski Island. Had no idea this existed. Dafuski is a really small island.
L B Daufuskie 😊
Have you ever thought about doing an episode about the Ciudad Real Central Airport in Spain? Billion dollar project left up for grabs after three years.
Wow. That tops the new Berlin Airport in Germany!
@Von Huyzen That was when they broke into one of the abandoned condos for an overnight stay, right? Those condos were pristine!
Millions of dollars and the courts are still figuring it out. Meanwhile the place isn't worth bunk. Place would have to be razed. Cost more to fix it than its worth.
Sadly. Nature, and spiders win.
just looking at a satellite map, it makes you wonder how the land it is on is staying together. I bet it is abandoned due to geography predictions
Visited the island today. Literally thought you should make a video on it and you already had. Truly a tragic and eerie place to visit. Had no idea about this place.
Hopefully you guys also got to do the old Hard Rock Park while in SC, since the last few buildings will be gone soon.
i love this series so much, and you've produced SO many over the years. happy binging to me lol thank you the volume of such quality content. i can't reemember how i even came onto this channel but i'm glad i did.
i miss my old urbex days, not much left under my nose that isn't super hot anymore.
It sounds like unless someone has enough money to finance building a sea wall or a type of barrier to keep the water out.The property will probably go under water.
Global warming I'll bet
OMG, BREAKS MY HEART. Spent a week on Daufuskie Island must have been 1990. I thought it was one of the most beautiful places I had ever seen. Only the rich and famous. We were guests of my exhusbands family. Totally out of my element. " No " elbows on the table there baby. LOL Greed is an awful thing. Another storm this year and it may disapear. So sad.
I love watching this kind of videos, because it reminds us that entropy always wins, including in our own existence
I just went there today the place is HUGE it’s sad to see it abandoned
Live on this island :) actual is a fun island but it is sad to see what happened to Melrose and now some idot owns it and is not doing anything with it, but Haig Point is still booming! Also I live in Melrose and it's not all abandoned. Yes time has taken it's toll on the resort but in the summer time we get so many tourist that come in stay in the villas on the beach. The history here is awesome and the people are too.
I loved my time there and I’d love to go back to the villas
That’s called a steam jacket soup kettle. Steam from the boiler plant heats the kettle for cooking soups. They also have models that have there own burners that are used for soups as well as steaming and cooking.
So I live in Bluffton, literally 15 min from the ferry to Dufuski. In 10 years living here I have been on the island once and had no idea of this place or it’s history.
Reminds me it was some sort of time-share PONZI SCHEME. Keep up your GREAT work with these videos of abandoned buildings/resorts/malls/etc.
Like the time-share ponzi schemes allegedly perpetrated by the Siegels?
Another SUPER interesting property!!! Jake I've been watching your channel since early days and continue to be impressed at how much it's grown and developed in content and style! Really looking forward to the documentary!
This place is a amazing. What a shame it was left to decay. 💜🇺🇸🦄
Omg, I used to live and work on the island back in 2004-2005. They rented the place to International Junior Golf Academy. We lived on the beach cottages with the students on the other side of the island. We drive them on golf carts to Melrose everyday to practice. We’d eat at Melrose and they even had a really nice spa there. Interesting to see it like this today. Thanks for your videos!
Sad to see how quickly this place deteriorated in a relatively short amount of time. Abandoned has become my favorite RUclips recurring series. Another excellent job, Jake!
Thanks for documenting, and not destroying. Interesting how as an adult you learn to respect even what seems (potentially) unworthy of such respect.
Hopefully the actions of myself and other young adults can show younger people the same thing.
"Leave only footprints, take only video"
All of the urbexers I follow are very respectful, and I appreciate that.
It's funny I'm just finding this now. I see this thing everyday on the water and I always think this would be a good video for you to make. So ntinteresting to see the full story of this place now. Keep up the good work man, you're doing a really good job.
Excellent job, Jake!
The vandalism is senseless and sad. smh I will never understand the need for some people to destroy property.
Me neither
The Kitchen equipment is high quality expensive. I sell Galley equipment to Cruise Ships as you know. Same as land based but Marine is USPH. At 7:46, that’s not a mixer, it’s a Groen tilting kettle pan which costs about $30,000. Those triple Vulcan ovens were $8,000 each back the . All that Stainless Steel around the entire kitchen is roughly $35,000. The dishwashers are $4,000 each. I can go on. They did not skimp on Galley / Kitchen.
SN95 Mustang Garage all you need is a truck and a Craigslist ad.
Wow no kidding! Yeah it's odd that they didn't clear it out. I wonder though that because of the moisture that the electronics are completely gone
@@BrightSunFilms sooo when are you going to go extreme and do something like Chernobyl? 😉
Bright Sun Films Those items are dated now. That 120QT Groen kettle now is around $36,000 all in (no installation, 440V electric). There is probably $275K worth of equipment and Stainless Steel that I can see (probably more not on video). You’re right, wouldn’t pass any inspection even if descaled. What a shame, this place did it right. Too bad all of the shady financials killed this resort. Was in Savannah for a wedding recently, love the area.
Loved the video! Keep up the good work. I’m about to come out with my first own video soon, inspired by your type of editing😄You’ve really inspired me to start filing and taking photos😁 If you ever come to Florida I know some amazing spots!
Thank you!!
It's kinda a shame that resort had to be abandoned. The architectural style is awesome!
How come they are always in a hurry to throw some young punk who is selling weed into prison but someone who cons people out of millions of dollars requires “more investigation”. There is no fucking justice.
Your videos are so well done. I'm always excited when I see a new one posted. It's also super cool to see how you keep getting better and better over the years.
1:53 Looks more incomplete rather than gutted
Excellent content as usual👍🏼
At least when the affluent are defrauding each other you know they aren't defrauding poor people who can't easily recover. Feel bad for the folks who invested their retirement savings though.
what was that building at 12:00? part of the hotel or a seperate villa?
The architecture in general is attractive, like it was built in the early 20th century, not 1987. Such a shame this is its fate.
That’s the other side of the right wing of the main building.
The exterior looks like it could have been built in the 19th century
Just found your channel. Great research to give us all some perspective. Keep up the good work mate and stay safe!
Thank you!
So, here’s the deal now in 2021. Just visited Daufuskie for the first time. It’s in even worse condition then before. Cant go in, super dangerous. Here’s the thing, NO ONE HAS BOUGHT IT. The windows are completely broken, there’s furniture thrown in the backyard, and if you can peek in through the broken window, you see all of the furniture is still in.
It’s so sad that a place like this is just left to die
I poked around this hotel in September. It was crazy. Your footage is much better than what I have
Man Mulder must be really trying to contact X really bad with all those taped x's.
It’s crazy to believe that something like this can be in my state without me ever knowing about it
I worked at Melrose in 89 thru 91. It was an amazingly beautiful place. Made many deserts and breads in that bakery below the kitchen. So terribly sad to see it in such disarray. Makes my heart sad.
I went to this resort many times as a child and it was beautiful. The last 3 holes on the golf course were spectacular with waves crashing along the seawall as you played. Everyone got around on golf carts which as kids we all loved to drive, many memories at the pool, the clubhouse, and there was a separate building with a bar and pool tables that we would play in all the time. Very sad to see it in this state. Great video though!
According to Google reviews, this place is open. Is this an old video?
Edit... Saw the rotting building further south down the beach.
The ceiling fan is a good visual representation of this story.... weighted down by the decay of original beauty.... completely ruined and sad.
Im amazed that such an idyllic location has been allowed to just fall into disrepair like this.
Can you do a section on East Towne Mall? It recently closed in Tennessee
Even Horst Schulze couldn't save this place. Even though he tried
I'm gonna make a drinking game for everytime Jake says "huh..." during these explorations.
Good luck, I’m too mystified by everything
aaaaaand you’re dead.
@@BrightSunFilms I'm definitely mystified too, otherwise I wouldn't be here 😂

I always get a bit depressed watching this channel. Not that you've done anything bad. You do an amazing job. It's a real shame seeing so much interesting architecture going to waste.
I used to live on daufuskie and seen the resort many times… man all that devistation
My mother in law lives on dafuskie island and i visited this place over this past summer. I commented on one of your videos that you should look into this place. I don’t know if that’s why you did but either way very cool and i enjoyed the video.
Is it going to be torn down? Usually the red x's on things is used to mark what is to be salvaged
I think when the fraudulent owners came in they did that. The property from what I can tell hasn't been significantly changed since 2015

I'm a writer that's never been published (yet!) and watching these shows give me the inspiration I need :) Keep up the good work
I like your videos but these of abandoned malls and resorts like this are just my favs. It is so helpful providing the background story, or talking to one of the involved. Other videos are still cool, but you walk through abandoned places and shoot the damage, wondering what had happened. The story element, these are the golden videos.I hope you continue to find estates of that magnitude, and much more people must see all these videos, like 3 mil subs, then you go nationwide-er, and abroad.
That’s crazy you guys are doing a video on this place. I lived in Hilton head island for like 15 years. Daufuskie island is so close.
So not long abandoned but in pritty bad shape. Sad 😔
Daufuskie is too secluded for homes and resorts. There are only 4 ferries between it and Hilton Head per day.
Usually the majority of the homes are vacation rentals or second estates
This is the best. Not only do you show us the abandoned buildings but, you also gives us a complete back story as you know it. Thanks🍻
