I used to be a ski instructor and a life guard there 20 years ago now (crazy to think). It's interesting to see how the place has been taken over by vegetation and decayed over time. A lot of us worked there when we were in highschool: bellhops, kitchens, servers, ski instructors, camp counselors, life guards etc... brings back a lot of memories watching you walk through the buildings.

@Jeannie Farnsworth they invested a bunch of money for renovations in the late 90s I believe, but it needed way more than what was invested. I feel like there were always leaks somewhere. The buildings were very old. I enjoyed going there though. Was a lot of fun working there as a ski instructor and life guard.

Jake, thank you for making this video. It absolutely broke my heart. My family vacationed here twice a year for almost 10 years; our last visit was winter 2001. I have so many fond memories of this resort- skating at the rink, tubing down the mountains until our faces were frozen, swimming and jumping in the pool, the indoor mini golf course (which you didn't get on video- it is part of the kid's club area in the basement and it was AWESOME!), and so much more. We even have family photos in the lobby and dining room; they are still on display in my parent's house!
I always thought I would take my kids there...well, my oldest child is almost the age when I started going.
Such a bittersweet video for me. Thanks again Jake!

Hey Jake, just to want to let you know this video has been a blast from the past . In 2008 , my high school took the senior class here for their " senior class trip" ..and the place looked abandoned and very run down evnn then . It looked and felt like something out of the Shining (and it didnt help that we arrived after dusk with fog rolling in) , and seemed like nothing had been renovated or updated since the 70s (particularly the underground access tunnels that ran between the buildings. Fully paneled walls and old fire place and everything. ) In my room we had a window snap down on a girl's fingers when she tried to open it for some fresh hair, steps were broken , we actually had to pay for ski supplies when we were promised they would be included, and the " dance room" we had been promised was an old forgotten banquet hall they has just quickly cleaned out and set up a folding table with an orange Gatorade water cooler on it ( while another senior class from another school had the main room that was fully decorated and etc) . My friends and I still call it the nightmare trip (( the pool and skate rink were nice though))

I’m so excited to see this! I’m from Australia and stayed here in August 2008 and have been trying to find a video to show people how creepy this hotel was! I remember exploring around even then and so many parts of the resort were in pitch black and closed off to the public. I went back to New York State in 2010 and went to the hotel next door to this and even then people couldn’t believe we stayed there only 2 years prior because it was so disheveled already. I distinctly remember the smell of mould in the main dining room and in the rooms... it just goes to show what was lurking underneath! Amazing job!!

I used to have a house in Napanoch, several miles away from the Nevele. When it was on its last legs - months before finally closing - I went with some friends and took a tour of the open areas. I especially remember the old theater, whose once-grand curtain was entirely devoured by mildew and mold. You could feel the echoes of happier days all around. I'm sorry to see that it's so hopelessly deteriorated. But thank you for the trip down memory lane.

My dad spent a lot of his childhood in Ellenville. We went back to see the area about 10 years ago. It was sad looking, economically depressed and run down with empty abandoned hotels and resorts here and there. Clearly had been a big vacation area decades ago, but when we were there I think the biggest employer was the prison.
The Catskills were a big deal in the first half of the 20th century but started to go downhill when due to cheaper jet travel starting in the 1960s, the middle class in the Northeast became more able to afford to go to places like Europe, California, Florida etc.

I find it interesting that in a google street view in 2012, the Nevele Grand resort and country club sign looks well maintained and the grass is mowed. And a more recent one on Bing, where the sign has been changed to mention the casino which isn't going to happen there now. Evidently the only portion of the resort they are maintaining is the sign and grass around it.

Crazy what only a few years can do to a place. I remember staying here a few times with my parents for their annual work retreat in the early 2000s and grew up nearby in Pine Bush. It definitely had a “going downhill” feel and a lot of it was already closed but I almost can’t recognize it in this video. They always said they were gonna renovate but when the town shut down the casino concept this is what happened.

I clicked on this video not even realizing that was the Nevele. That's my hometown, I miss all the borsche belt hotels. The Catskills and Sullivan county have never been the same

I remember going there for a weekend with my family for my grandparents 40th anniversary in ‘87. I was four years old but remember it well. It’s so eerie to see it abandoned, especially since my grandparents who I was so close with are no longer with us. It makes it a little sadder… really portrays the end of an era. Also, what is it about abandoned indoor pools that is so unsettling?

D William I spent most of the four years I dated my wife before we married and moved to California wandering around this area in the late 1980’s (she grew up in Ellenville)..most of the places were in decline even then, although it took the Nevele until well into the 1990’s to really notably decline...Honestly, these places looked a LOT like the old classic Vegas places that were all knocked down

@@edvaira6891 hence why I think the original owners sold in the 1990s the saw the writing on the wall. thought the people that bought it probably didn't understand how much stuff needed to be done and that tourism was changing in the area

Very good video bro! I loved the 80s commercial! The tower (since i see the Kids draw in the commercial) reiminds me of the leaning tower of Pisa (i'm from Italy)
Italy Is full of abandoned hotels/buildings too
Nice video Jake! Keep It up!

I explored this with my best friend around 2009, and it’s easily the coolest urbex experience I’ve ever had.
The variety of buildings was wild - there were guest rooms that looked practically untouched, and others in older buildings with only rotting furniture left. In the main tower we found a beauty salon and jewelry store with literally everything left inside, including employee files (with personal information) and even a set of blueprints for the property. We also found all the keys for the property and room service trolleys with used dishes. The commercial kitchen in the tower still contained all the appliances and a lot of other kitchenware - dishes, utensils, etc. Most of the furniture in many parts of the hotel was fully intact.
But by far the coolest and creepiest part was a small lodge near the ice rink and ski lift, which I believe was employee housing. The rooms were much smaller there, and while nice, it definitely didn’t feel like the rest of the hotel. There was a great room in the middle of it with a 2-story stone fireplace, and on the upper level, which was open to the living room below, were long hallways in multiple directions that housed simple rooms. What we found in there was amazing - clothing, sports equipment, a diary, dirty magazines, loads of books and toiletries, and literally hundreds of used syringes that indicated that someone had occupied the space after it was abandoned. It’s so wild to see so many of the spaces we walked through in this video. This place will always be tough for me to top!

I think you’re describing the winter lodge in that last part, it was one of the oldest structures on property until it burned down in 2024 (the other oldest was part of the main building, the section that seemed to form a V)

I actually live in ellenville NY I drive past the nevele all the time and it’s just truly sad how it closed. Hurricane Irene really took a tole on the place but the sports complex isn’t happening either the owner more or less tried to screw over the investors. And Jake this was a wonderful video hope you enjoyed Ellenville !

I remember seeing commercials for The Nevele when I was little! I knew I'd never get to visit because...well, I was too young, and my folks weren't into the Catskills like that. I can't believe that this is how it ended up!
Jake, you and your crew have come a long way in your taping and storytelling skills; this was amazing!
