The Hollywood Chamber Orchestra is the group that did the music for the show. Love how they were able to figure a way to give the folks outside the screen a chance to be part acting in an episode.
The explanations that Roddenberry's creative team went into in order to justify the technological improbabilities on his shows usually provided a well-thought-out redundancy to such issues. I would imagine that MacFarlane is no different. For instance: the "transparent" glass in a novelty bathroom leaves people to believe that if there is ever a power failure the occupant will be exposed to the outside world while using the facilities. The fact is the "transparency" is only established when a charge is applied. The natural state of the glass is to be opaque. So, if there were ever a problem, no one could see in when it's off. Futuristic shows like this will often rely on mechanical backups when the digital ones fail. If the shield were to go down because of a system failure, the failsafe would most likely be a spring-loaded or hydraulic shield that would snap shut at any sign of a power loss. The "natural" state of the safety shield is to be closed while the "powered on" state is for it to be open with a force field providing protection. It's the same as in hospitals or government buildings with fire doors. They are on a magnetic clip that will disengage if there is ever a power loss or fire alarm so the doors swing shut to prevent the spread of flames.
@@Phlebas probably Western, since most of the world sets their watches off of Greenwich time, it would make sense that they would use it's hemisphere as a seasonal clock.

"The Orville" does capture the essence of TNG, including its regular classical and jazz concerts :)
I feel this reflected Seths love of this music and a tiny bit a parody of the TNG symphonies they had
that confidence in technology is funny... imagine the shield generator had a little break up and fail at the moment of the cresendo.

This was a fun episode. Almost all of season 2 was way better than season 1.
My favourite episode !
Love this episode! :)
I don't know what it is but ever since I first saw her on DS9 Penny Johnson has always ruffled my feathers
Every summer? What is summer on a starship?
same as one hour: based on earth back home even tho they arent on it.
@@gillriet773 But which hemisphere?

If you’re going to question sci-fi, it’s probably not for you… 😜
The Union Fleet probably has a universal calendar system, most likely based on Earth's Gregorian calendar, because that's HQ.
I love this part.
Great musicians! Did you see Iaasc's delight? in the choice of music. And he says he has no emotions!
Entertaining
I wish they placed an odd alien instrument in the orchestra...
Anyone else notice that the musicians are wearing chefs jackets? :D
They look more East Asian to me. I thought of it as a shift from formal Western wear, to Far Eastern wear over the 400 years.
I haven't seen this episode, yet. The person conducting, isn't he a well known composer or conductor? Just curious.
It's Mark Graham, who was one of the orchestrators on the Orville, and has worked on many Hollywood movies as an orchestrator/conductor.
