I think I'm one of the few people who prefers Discovery Kingdom to Magic Mountain. The lines are shorter, the staff is friendlier and the fact that there's less coasters means you can ride them all in one day.

I remembered when this used to Marine World Africa USA. One of its big attractions was an outdoor animatronic dinosaur walking tour complete with a roaring T-rex that you could see from the parking lot (it was on a big hill in the front of the park). The last time I went to the park, it was in the middle of transitioning into a Six Flags then called Marine World (most of the flat rides just opened but some of the old park shows were(sic) stilling opened (like the killer whale show and ice skating show)).

That empty footprint in the Looney Tunes area used to be a water playground called Acme Waterworks. It was essentially two water towers with giant buckets filled with water hanging over both of them.
This park is about an hour away for me and I've been to it countless times since childhood. It's gone through a really interesting history where it used to be completely made up of animal shows and exhibits. Anything past the Sea Lion Stadium as well as Medusa's area all opened up with the Six Flags acquisition to give more space for coasters.
The V2 situation was a shame, and overall the 150 foot height limit is definitely the main thing this park has going against it. I've long since wanted them to build a mini hyper coaster and have a long tunnel to extend the drop Goliath style.
Speaking of future development. Chalbot Stadium (the large outdoor arena over by the Walrus Experience and Ocean Discovery) hasn't been used in nearly a decade. It used to be used for ski shows since the stadium overlooks the lake, and then it was used for hypnotist shows during Fright Fest, but the ski show has long since been gone and the hypnotist has been moved to the smaller Bird Theater. I definitely think they should build a coaster back there. The only thing that might be setting them back is some kind of law against building over the lake, even though that part of the lake is property of the park.
Totally agree with the awesome themed flat rides of this park. They definitely make "ordinary" style carnival rides into something a bit more unique. Thrilla Gorilla is easily one of the most under-rated rides in the park. Definitely would be boring without the giant King Kong gorilla head starring at you the whole time. I think the flat rides as a whole are really what set this park apart. It certainly doesn't have the greatest coaster collection, but it has a ton of variety between the coasters, flats, kiddie areas, and animal stuff.
I think White Water Safari has one of the best layouts out of any ride of its type that I've been on. The way it wraps itself around the middle of the park is absolutely ingenious in terms of symmetry with the surrounding areas. The waterfall near the start of the ride is absolutely BRUTAL.
Sorry for the novel of a comment. I just love whenever people spotlight this gem of a park.

Rides like tsunami soaker are really fun. There's one here in the UK at Blackpool Pleasure Becah themed to Sponge Bob, it's the only ride of its type in this country, a very underrated family ride.

Yea, the abandoned stadiums are definitely the most depressing aspect of this park. The elephant situation in particular breaks my heart since it's one of the oldest and least changed areas of the park history-wise and it's completely gone to shambles, only existing to make money off the elephant rides. I'm fairly sure they used to have more elephants but had to ship them off elsewhere hence why the area feels so devoid of actual animals. The show in the elephant area was actually combined where there'd be a 15 minute demonstration on typical elephant behaviors in the proper stadium at the back of the area. The bleachers overlooking the stack of logs used to be a log rolling demonstration by the elephants done immediately after the first half of the show, which always concluded with a tug of war game between any guests who wanted to participate and the elephant. Great stuff that's sadly in the past.
As I said the ski stadium has been deserted for probably close to a decade and seriously needs to be utilized somehow. The "Jungle" Stadium located within Tava's Jungleland plays host to what is essentially a "variety" show for animals, but it only runs during the summer and holidays. The stadium that's right near the front of the park used to house the dolphin show. The stadium that now has "Drenched" used to be a killer whale show. A couple years ago there was a cirque du soleil show that incorporated dolphins, so it remains to be seen if that stadium is just going to stay empty or if they're going to design a more permanent show to fit in there.

Yeah, there has been a lot of change at Discovery Kingdom. Remember, it was an independent park until it was bought out by Six Flags many years ago... it use to be called Marine World and was located down in Redwood City, but moved in 1986 under the control of the non-profit Marine World Foundation. Being mostly focused on animals, the city of Vallejo hired Premier Parks which later became Six Flags to remodel the park with more thrill attractions. Although the park is pretty balanced with animal and rides, you can notice more and more that they are focusing on rides more and animal enclosures are falling into disrepair, but still function. The bigger move since hen is when Discovery Kingdom sold Shouka, their only killer whale to Sea World to let her bond with other whales. However, one can notice that the dolphins are having a hard time filling her spot. One employee told me that Shouka had actually passed many years ago and that the 'Shouka' that they sold was not the original, but a look-a-like replacement. It is hard today to keep people entertained with animals which is why Six Flags only has two animal inclusive locations: 'Discovery Kingdom' and 'Great Adventure: Wild Safari'... They have to do what will keep them from going under or ending up like Kentucky Kingdom...

Haha, the shark attraction is officially called "Shark Experience", but I agree that sign is hilarious and misleading. Welcome to SHARK!
Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco has an attraction called "Underwater World" which is essentially a large collection of glass tubes in the style of the one at Shark Experience and has you literally walking underwater through the San Francisco Bay.

One of the dis-used arenas at the park during the Music in the Parks festival is used for the 'ceremony' were the elementary, middle, and high school music students who competed that day at a near by high school will get their trophies and find out who won for their specific categories.(orchestra, choir, band, etc.)
Usually one of them is used for that around End of April to the middle of May.
Our middle school choir has won the past 2 years!!! hope to gain another win before high school...

I think the reason why they are using the Hump Day t-shirt is because some roller coasters have hills / aka humps. They took the spin on the Geico camel commercial, and are using it for roller coasters.
It doesn't make sense why this park would even put in a Larson Fireball / Ring of Fire if they have that other flat ride - the Zamperla ride that is themed to a Hammerhead shark. It does the same thing as the Larson Fireball.

About the elephants, they just retired their own elephants, a couple of months ago. They're ending their elephant program this season. Therefore the elephants are no longer at the park. The few you saw are loaned to the park. Next year all elephant stuff is closed. The wild life theater is being refurbished, the stadium at the lake is used for concerts in the summer, the stadium where Shouka used to be, has been refurbished and is now the Toyota Stadium, used for Drench! So that's definitely being used. The Dolphin Harbor stadium reopened a couple of days ago with a new dolphin show named Discover Our Ocean Friends. In total, there's only one stadium that they're not using anymore, which is the Elephant one, which will be removed later this year. Tava's Jungle Land is named after their elephant Tava, that left a few weeks ago.

Fun Fact: Medusa’s “cobra roll” is actually a sea serpent roll. Instead of entering and exiting the same way like a cobra roll, a sea serpent roll has the train enter one way and exit the other. There are only three sea serpent rolls in the world.

Someone said Knott's is the best in Cali. Are you kidding me? I haven't been here since before Six Flags bought it. The empty show arenas are sad to see empty now it is Six Flags. I just got my car repaired after sitting for 2 years and decided This is where I will be going this spring break. Thanks for your videos. We went last weekend it was fun. We got soaked later during the day with the rain. There were so many things we didn't get to see. Can't wait to go back again. Now some rides have changed like roar is the joker and that water shooter ride is the penguin. They added Harley Quinn and this year they will add the Batman ride. This park is growing large in terms of rides.

I can say that the "empty" theater in Tava's Jungleland isn't empty. At the time this video was made we were revamping the theater. Also Tava's Jungleland just looks old. Tava's opened in 2006 but Tava's Trading Post has been there since I was a kid. I worked in Tava's Jungleland as a ride operator until I moved to Looney Tunes Seaport.

If you are in NorCal and don't have 4-6 hours to travel and sleep in Valencia, Discovery Kingdom is a great time and $ saver. It is the best Norther California has to offer. Magic Mountain is way better. Can't put a price on the best coaster park in California.

Grotti Crime FamilyHD Close, it was actually a water play structure. Your standard mini water park, but with a tower where you would shoot at certain target and when all were shot at a geyser would erupt. Not sure why they took it out, it was a really good part of the Looney Toons Seaport, but it probably was because it's a big liability if someone slips or gets hurt. Plus the city of Vallejo are real pricks about liability issues...

This park actually makes me super depressed. I've gone every year when I was in middle school as part of field trips, and I recently went this summer now being a senior in high school. I remembered this park being unbelievably fun (more fun than other northern california park Great America) but now, and maybe because I'm older, I've noticed how bad it's state really is.
If this park did not have Medusa or Superman, it would be closed in a heart beat. The animal exhibits just made me sad, as it incorporates a zoo within an amusement park. I'm never one to be a fan of zoos but especially here since the animals are located so close to the noisy rides, it makes me feel bad. And since six flags' focus is on bigger and better rides, the upkeep on the animals just isn't there.
There is another section of the park right near boomerang that houses one tiger and its always resting in the sun, and it makes me feel bad because its on its own first of all, and its located next to a larger coaster which means rumbling and screaming people. I did ride the elephants, which is a large extra price and also another thing to make me feel bad is that six flags is trying to get the most money out of their visitors that these elephants probably do not take a break and ride up to 4 people at once non stop.
The larger stadium towards the back of the park, Toyota Stadium that houses the Drench show, used to hold a killer whale show and since they sold their whale a few years ago, there is a dolphin show there. Which I'm fine with but there is another stadium for another dolphin show just next to it, which makes it feel awkward and out of place, and you can obviously tell that this large Toyota Stadium wasn't met for little dolphins
Along with the abandoned animal stadiums, theres also abandoned rides! Which gives you an eerie feeling and makes you not really wanna be around the park. There are many rides in the back near the monkey themed flat rides that just don't have an operator near them. For example, near that childrens safari jeep ride, there was a mini swing set and hot air balloon ride that just are not operated. Theres another ride voodoo that I swear has been "temporarily closed" for 4 years. And the white water safari rapids ride was also closed when I came, and the water was completely drained out.
Overall I think this park has lost its hype. I waited in no lines for any rides in mid day in August. I pretty much only go there for medusa.

I just went yesterday and I got bored. I just went on the cobra superman and v2 (when I went on v2 it stopped in the middle of the ride so did the roadrunner ride) When I was little It seemed fun but as an 11 year old girl its not fun anymore. Half the rides are for little kids. Also yes when I went yesterday the rapids ride and the voodo ride wasent working either.

Spencer Calderon Yeah, and if they did I would hope they would give it a better name than just "The Joker." The name is boring. I hope Magic Mountain won't get a Larson Loop as their "20th coaster." 😩

    • @Mr_Ro.0k
      @Mr_Ro.0k 8 лет назад

Yeah, Magic Mountain will probably add in a Super Loop next year at Magic Mountain, but maybe they will only call it a thrill ride, and give an actual coaster the honor of being the 20th. I would personally like to see the Green Lantern First Flight get replaced by an S&S Free Spin, and either a Wing, Dive, or Polar Coaster be built. If they built a Polar Coaster, then they could re-purpose the old observation tower as a central support of sorts!

    • @Tbone1725
      @Tbone1725 8 лет назад +1

Spencer Calderon Probably. Six Flags started adding four every year and they bought twelve Super Loops I believe. I'm fine with them adding one but I'd prefer them not to call it a coaster. Magic Mountain could use more thrill rides. For their 20th coaster I think they should do something BIG because their 20th coaster will be a huge milestone. Adding a polar coaster on/in its place of the Observation tower then they would have an icon again. I would love for them to replace Green Lantern with an S&S Free Spin, they can't do anything to it to make it non-painful. We'll just have to wait and see what they have up their sleeves. :)

Nice observation my friend on the lack of use their shows. I wish you could have brought your family when it was Marine World Africa USA, the shows wee absolutely phenomenal. The water Skii show in particular and Six flags used to do all of it but not any more. My Child hood memories right down the drain, Magic Mountain was the same way. once the corporation took over it was all about the rides and less about entertaining people with live people. Love the park, hate six flags

I live literally across the freeway from Six Flags DK And I Absalutly Love It. I Still Go At Lease 4 Times A Week And I Never Get Tired Of It. it's Defiantly not as great as it was before years ago when it was Marin world but I think it's still holding up pretty good. now I'm not saying it's the best park like Disneyland or anything like that but it's not as bad as I see people in the comment section are making it seem. but the best part about that park is the amazing costomer service they have! it's outstanding! never had , had an issue all these years of going with the staff, also met the park president that is very , very nice and friendly and gives out six flags stickers lol and the shows are all pretty good as well. I never get tired of seeing the dolphins and the new 2015 show Dive is a must see!! it's probobly one of the best shows I've seen at six flags ever! I guess if your a local and this theme park is kinda like a second home to you, you'll understand why it's such an amazing theme park, not only is it filled with chiled hood memory's, but it's just an escape from ordinary life. I mean you get a zoo and a theme park put together!! what more can you ask!

I hate the Superman ride for replacing Zonga. Have not been since 2003. Superman is a JERK thru and thru, ESPECIALLY when you take away Lois Lane. Swayzak is a joke villain. The villainy is all an act with him IMO. Superman feigning kindness is worse than Swayzak's attempted overconfident villainy. Trust me. I know Swayzak more than Jason DeMarco.
(And if you're wondering what this obscure Toonami one-off has to do with Zonga... the ride always reminded me of him. It has the same vibe as him. I know Swayzak more than anyone else, so if I see something that reminds me of him, then it's DEFINITELY reminiscent of him.)

I hate this six flags. Thats why the only time i really go is during cheer competition when we have it at six flags 😕. The rides are really fun and scary but they always break down. One time I was on the voodoo and it broke down when we were upside down. I waited an hour in the line of superman and when i got to the front they shut it down 😩😤. This six flags sucks ass

Ian Olexsak all i did was state a fact. its an old park, its been up longer than magic mountain. keeping up with the park is hard if its that old and in general it seems that they need a whole new make over with that park. just because its old doesnt mean people shouldnt visit the park.
