At the time, Bob Crosby was appearing on CBS radio's nightly "CLUB 15" program for Campbell's Soup {"Mmm-mmm-good!!! Mmm-mm-good!! That's what Campbell's Soups are, MMM-MMM-GOOD!!!!"}.

Because of cutbacks in the program's production budget (due to television siphoning listeners away from radio, and Jack's sponsor, American Tobacco, shifting more of its advertising dollars towards TV), Phil's contract wasn't renewed, and Jack signed Bob Crosby as his "replacement". Actually, Bob was hired as more of an actor than a "bandleader", as Mahlon Merrick was actually the show's arranger and conductor. Bob managed to stick around for one more season after the radio series ended, and quietly departed by the spring of 1956.
