  • A discussion by literary scholar and translator Veronika Tuckerová, writer Magdalena Platzová, and translator Ross Benjamin focused on the complex world of Franz Kafka and his interpretations across the past 100 years. The evening was moderated by Seth Rogoff.
The lectures and panel discussions of the Transatlantic Kafka Project were part of the KAFKA 100 project.
In the centenary year of Franz Kafka's death, the Transatlantic Kafka Project presented innovative, inspiring and topical discussions focusing on this important writer in the context of contemporary events. The project brought prominent writers, academics, and artists from the US and Europe to the same table in June 2024 to create a space to bring together American and European perspectives on Kafka's work. Through the meeting, the aim was to stimulate an enriching cultural dialogue and exchange of ideas, thus contributing to the preservation of Franz Kafka's legacy for current and future generations.
The keynote address was delivered by Merve Emre, professor of creative writing and criticism at Wesleyan University and director of the Shapiro Center for Creative Writing and Criticism. Emre has contributed regularly to The New Yorker magazine. Her essays and reviews have appeared in publications ranging from The New York Review of Books, Harper's, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, and the London Review of Books. She is the recipient of the 2019 Philip Leverhulme Prize. Her work has been supported by many prestigious institutions, including the Institute for Graduate Studies in Berlin.
The Transatlantic Kafka Project was organized by the Jewish Museum in Prague in collaboration with the Anglo-American College, the Václav Havel Library, and Harvard University. The event was supported by the US Embassy in the Czech Republic, the Austrian Cultural Forum in Prague and the City of Prague.
