I've JUST fallen back into love with Tamiya RC cars (I'm 48). Had a couple back in the 80'ies, but I never got around to getting the one I really wanted: The Hotshot. So I just ordered one and can't wait to get back into building and racing. Thank you for the inspiration, subbed. EDIT: Spelling
Hi Glenn, oh man, definitely the BigWig is up there as an all time favourite. I had one of these awesome Tamiya’s in 1986, like a fool, as I grew up, gave it to my younger brother, who….yes….trashed it. I really wish I could get my hands on a re-release version, but I’m afraid not able to source one in the UK now. Yours is stunning ! Brings back found memories of us lads, getting together at Ascot racecourse, which had a golf course in the centre and thrashing and jumping the sand bunkers! Awesome car, 8.4v NiCd packs, techniGold motor and the original had the 3step forward, 2 step reverse mechanical speed controller. Oh I miss it! Take care and best wishes 😊😉😊
The BigWig came up lovely... You were right with the black in the cockpit.. Can barely see it anyway but on the vid it looked like you painted in from the inside. I just finished my 2011 Avante and can tell why it's such a loved car so that's my favourite at #1. Gorgeous build and done in the metallic blue box art (and a first for me a perfectly cut and painted bodyshell and undertray/wing) Oh and the driver was done in box art and looks 100%...love it.. Got a Barely used Technigold for it too!!!!! #2 Hornet cos' that's where I started back in late 1985 I drove the living Hell out of that thing... should get another. #3 Wild one That was my second Tamiya in 1987 #4 Fox My third Tamiya car 1987 #5 Frog Picked up a second hand one back in 1988 and had lots of fun with that car... First one I sent to the moon!!! Well 6ft up lol.

Boomerang Madcap Wildone Brat Avante Sorry...... Love looking at the Bigwig, but as a kid..... it was my Boomerang I always liked (cheaper parts probably. Lol) Another great video....... love watching your builds. :)
Still figuring out my top 5. Sonic Fighter is number 1 for me as it was my first 35ish years ago. Your videos constantly stand to change my opinion on cars I didn’t care for much.
Good morning Glen!!! Man your reactions are priceless!!!!!! Your inner child comes out and shines and I’m sure it’s like that for everyone on here!!! Great looking car as it’s been growing on me a lot!! As far as my top favorite... not in order has to be a hotshot, frog, hotshot 2 wildone, and of course the Blackfoot all of which I could not afford as a kid. Also the boomerang!!! Yeah the boomerang! Do a video on that one . Thanks buddy for a awesome video and weekend!
Thanks for the video Glen. Should help a bit with my paint job. My body doesn’t quite sit right. I think it’s catching around the front shock towers but I’ve followed the lines. The marking on the front of the body where the shock towers pass through are too narrow . Look at the rear portion of the shock and notice how much wider it is than the front . For the body to be attached to the chassis requires a great deal of pressure . This is never good . I widened the top and now the body slips down easily .
Hey mate the car came up a treat great vid again as always As far as top 5s go extremely tricky I think after the first 2 or 3 it can get muddied up but anyway 1. I had the Hornet as a kid absolutely loved it! I grew up on a small holding, so had plenty of room to mess about with it. I remember my dad tacking me to my first/last rc meet, and all the other kids looking down on me because I had one. End of the meet there was a race, and I won! Walked away feeling proud of myself and never went back!
Very tidy job there Glen!!. Not much to say that I haven’t said before.. I so so wanted one these back in the day.. It was very different but I thought it was superb!!. I can't remember being a fan or not of the bigwig back in the day but that looked so good as soon as that stripe went on, I want one now. The Glenn effect must have kicked in because Tamico have sold the stock they had last week. 1, Hotshot 2, Blazing Blazer, 3 Super Champ, 4 Lancia Rally, 5 Egress. 1 to 4 are purely nostalgic and 5 because it's the best looking buggy they made. Great video again Glenn, what is the black pen you used? The finish looked very glossy and even.
FACOM... TOOLS mate! Another great video. Never been a fan of the Big Wig but I can see why people r! Do you have any idea how much import duties are from Japan to England? Carry on the amazing work! 👍👏
My Top 5: - 1:Lunchbox (my first RC) 2:Avante 3: Mountaineer (Mountain Rider) 4: Escort Cosworth (Zebra Stripe) 5: Top Force The Bigwig looks bob on, I'm impressed with how well the marker works, Think I will use them more for detailing on my next build.
Super end result, awesome! My Top 5 Glenn are albeit a very very difficult to rate as I love them all but if I have to it would be 1. Bigwig 2. Avante 3. Terra Scorcher 4. Hotshot 5. Top Force.........just wish I could inc. The Hornet and Monster Beetle in the list
I kinda think this would look so much better with a more muted color scheme, it looks like a a Nikko RC car that got a promotion. I guess thats also part of its charm. Its still part of that lovely era when tamiya just did bonkers designs all the time, which makes it great, even if I dont particularly like the looks. Ace vid as always.
Thanks for the video Glenn! I'll list the most desirable that I never owned but always wanted. 1.The Dyna Storm. 2. Top Force Evolution. 3. The Fox. 4. Super Astute. 5. Supershot.
Agree it's difficult to rate the cars, here is a suggestion; 1, Sand Scorcher (for initiating the RC buggy boom) 2; Hotshot (first 4wd), 3 Hornet (production rate / time), 4 Avante (engineering), 5 Top Force (car no 100, hopped-up racer). BTW the Bigwig looks good.
@@TAMIYALegends I love to build kits I built my Traxxas stampede from scratch and I want to buy a new Tamiya but I fancy a sandscourcher to go with my Rough Rider. The hard bodies are easy to paint .
I was most active in the hobby in the mid 80's and until the late 90's. here is my list 1 egress 2 avante 3 clod buster 4 Top force evo 5 midnight pumpkin. Of all the cars on the list, it onley the egress that I have never owned.
For the engine plug wire detail, use some wire thats the right gauge instead of tubing. Its much cheaper, and you can choose any colour you want. White or blue would look great. Also, great job on the body.
Wonderful car. Shame about the marker pen (!) and fully spraying it white underneath would tidy up the rear underside view. I'd love to see it run on a Technigold 8.4v just out of curiosity... 😉 1. Terra Scorcher 2. Falcon. 3. Avante 4. Toyota Celica Group B 5. Porsche 959
Picking just 5 is really difficult. If we are just talking golden era then my favourites are... Egress Avante Vanquish Lunchbox Clodbuster Although if I can add a modern Tamiya, it would be my go to car for blasting round the garden the Comical Avante 😃
My top 5 would be: - Top Force (Evo) - Dyna Storm - Egress - Durga - Super Astute I actually like the 90‘s cars better than the ones from the 80‘s (maybe more of my era, hehe). I think especially when looking at the chassis, there were some really goofy designs on the 80‘s cars, so when you look at them from a non-nostalgic POV you think „oh, ok they could‘ve solved that problem much simpler or more elegant“. But beginning with the DF-01 or even the Egress I‘m thinking „yep, this is a good design for its time!“ ;)
Hi Glenn - great job on the Bigwig - this one really has grown on me over the years, and thanks to videos like yours, I really need one in my collection! As for the top 5, I think mine changes from week to week - I just love too many Tamiya cars! But for sentiment only, as the Monster Beetle was my first ever Tamiya, it has to be up there - along with the Thunder Dragon and Wild One! All the best mate! 👍👍👍
If I really had to choose these would be my top five but as all below generally has at least one sister car on the same chassis I could just as easily have at least 2. completely different top 5s 1. Porsche 959 Dakar 2. Sand Scorcher 3. Opel Ascona Rally 4. Wild One 5. Hotshot
MCI decals is mentioned in the video as a source for reproduction vintage decals. I tried chatting and emailing with them about an inquiry but they never seem to respond.
5. M-03 4. Manta Ray 3. Lunchbox 2. BigWig 1. F103 I'm an F1 junkie, what else would I say for my number 1? Formula-E is pretty slick as well. They're just giant RC cars pretty well.
Thanks for another cool video.

4. Boomerang
5. Bigwig

Apauline.

FACOM... TOOLS mate!
Another great video. Never been a fan of the Big Wig but I can see why people r!
Do you have any idea how much import duties are from Japan to England?
Carry on the amazing work! 👍👏
My Top 5: - 1:Lunchbox (my first RC) 2:Avante 3: Mountaineer (Mountain Rider) 4: Escort Cosworth (Zebra Stripe) 5: Top Force
The Bigwig looks bob on, I'm impressed with how well the marker works, Think I will use them more for detailing on my next build.
Oh you’ve thrown a Mountaineer in there 🤩
That’s funny it’s a truck I didn’t think I liked but recently I can’t stop looking at them 🤩🤩🤩
Super end result, awesome!
Haha 😂 it’s really tough isn’t it 😊👊🏻
i don't know if you've done one before, but i would like to see a video on how to prepare your rc for winter use.
Hmmm 🤔 interesting I’ll have a think about that 👊🏻
The simpson helmet decal is different. The rere says TAMIYA. But awesome job Glenn. Love the BigWig
I know I’ve completely missed that one 🤓. I’ll get it changed over 👊🏻
I kinda think this would look so much better with a more muted color scheme, it looks like a a Nikko RC car that got a promotion. I guess thats also part of its charm. Its still part of that lovely era when tamiya just did bonkers designs all the time, which makes it great, even if I dont particularly like the looks. Ace vid as always.
Great comment my friend and yes I can totally appreciated that view point 😊👊🏻
Man, it came out awesome, wish they didn't discontinue it
Thanks for the video Glenn! I'll list the most desirable that I never owned but always wanted. 1.The Dyna Storm. 2. Top Force Evolution. 3. The Fox. 4. Super Astute. 5. Supershot.
Yep that’s a top lineup my friend 😊😊😊
Beauty!!! Wings can be such a pain to get the pint in the folds.
Yeah it’s a bit of a pain to paint 😬😬😬
Agree it's difficult to rate the cars, here is a suggestion; 1, Sand Scorcher (for initiating the RC buggy boom) 2; Hotshot (first 4wd), 3 Hornet (production rate / time), 4 Avante (engineering), 5 Top Force (car no 100, hopped-up racer). BTW the Bigwig looks good.
Excellent comment 😊👊🏻
Nice video, And the bigwig is awesome. My 5 would be.
1. BigWig
2.Avante
3.Boomerang
4.Hotshot
5.Grasshopper
Fantastic 🤩
I wish Tamiya gave you the option of pre painted shells. You make it look easy
Well it looks like that’s the way Tamiya are going now 🤷🏼♂️
@@TAMIYALegends
I love to build kits I built my Traxxas stampede from scratch and I want to buy a new Tamiya but I fancy a sandscourcher to go with my Rough Rider. The hard bodies are easy to paint .
I was most active in the hobby in the mid 80's and until the late 90's. here is my list
1 egress
2 avante
3 clod buster
4 Top force evo
5 midnight pumpkin.
Of all the cars on the list, it onley the egress that I have never owned.
Fantastic lineup 😊😊😊
Falcon
Avante
959
Egress
Top force
Very cool video Glenn! By the way wiggy is my number 6 😉😉
Falcon in number one spot 🤩🤩🤩
Looks awesome 👍👍👍👍
I neeeeeed a BIGWIG! What a legendary car...
Yes you do my friend 😊😊😊
Superbe !!
love this , very good BigWin .
Thank you 😊
Great job, love the bigwig 😎
I need to add a Bigwig to my collection this year. I only ever new one lad who had one back in the day
Excellent Lee, I didn’t know anyone who had one ☹️
For the engine plug wire detail, use some wire thats the right gauge instead of tubing.
Its much cheaper, and you can choose any colour you want. White or blue would look great.
Also, great job on the body.
Excellent cheers Mike 😎👊🏻
Wonderful car. Shame about the marker pen (!) and fully spraying it white underneath would tidy up the rear underside view. I'd love to see it run on a Technigold 8.4v just out of curiosity... 😉
1. Terra Scorcher
2. Falcon.
3. Avante
4. Toyota Celica Group B
5. Porsche 959
8:25 you can see on the wing where the paint is proper thin, its translucent and on the left wing support part.............
Yeah it’s not perfect 🤓🤷🏼♂️
Did you attach the fins to the body ?
Picking just 5 is really difficult. If we are just talking golden era then my favourites are...
Egress
Avante
Vanquish
Lunchbox
Clodbuster
Although if I can add a modern Tamiya, it would be my go to car for blasting round the garden the Comical Avante 😃
love the videos. I've only just seen this. I am restoring my 80's Bigwig at the moment. Do you have a contact for replica decals?
Love it had original one from the 80s
avante, wild one, hotshot, bigwig , and all the other buggies l love them all.
My top 5 would be:
- Top Force (Evo)
- Dyna Storm
- Egress
- Durga
- Super Astute
I actually like the 90‘s cars better than the ones from the 80‘s (maybe more of my era, hehe).
I think especially when looking at the chassis, there were some really goofy designs on the 80‘s cars, so when you look at them from a non-nostalgic POV you think „oh, ok they could‘ve solved that problem much simpler or more elegant“. But beginning with the DF-01 or even the Egress I‘m thinking „yep, this is a good design for its time!“ ;)
Great comment my friend and also good to see the Durga in there 🤩👊🏻
The BigWig is an awesome looking one😎
Totally agree my friend 🤩🤩🤩
use old tamyia motor wires for the HT leads...... they will bee a nice snug fit just secure with a drop of superglue :D
Yeah a few have said that, I’ll have to give that a try 😊👊🏻
Looking pretty sweet. Snow run would be good
Yeah I’m definitely hoping to have it out soon 🤩👊🏻
Another great vid ,
1 Sand Scorcher
2 Rough Rider
3 Top force evo
4 Hot shot
5 Big Wig
Some of them end up showing your age😂👍
Haha they certainly do 😂👊🏻
The galaxy was my first introduction too tamiya rc 👍
Could also use black thread for the spark plug wires
Yeah that’s a great shout my friend 😊👊🏻
I've never seen any better masking tape than the Tamiya masking tapes. That's all I buy now as they never bleed.
Yeah totally I learnt the hard way unfortunately 😂👊🏻
Hi Glenn - great job on the Bigwig - this one really has grown on me over the years, and thanks to videos like yours, I really need one in my collection! As for the top 5, I think mine changes from week to week - I just love too many Tamiya cars! But for sentiment only, as the Monster Beetle was my first ever Tamiya, it has to be up there - along with the Thunder Dragon and Wild One! All the best mate! 👍👍👍
Hey Mark 👋🏻
Yeah it’s such a tough question, I can’t do it, I’ve tried many times 🤣👊🏻
If I really had to choose these would be my top five but as all below generally has at least one sister car on the same chassis I could just as easily have at least 2. completely different top 5s
1. Porsche 959 Dakar
2. Sand Scorcher
3. Opel Ascona Rally
4. Wild One
5. Hotshot
MCI decals is mentioned in the video as a source for reproduction vintage decals. I tried chatting and emailing with them about an inquiry but they never seem to respond.
Yep there communication is terrible 🤬🤬🤬
My top five would be Avante. Egress , Astute, Hotshot 2 and Schitzer BMW M3 Evo Glen 👍
My top five from back in the day is:
1. Terra Scorcher

2. Bigwig ( The one i wanted )

I'm an F1 junkie, what else would I say for my number 1?
Formula-E is pretty slick as well. They're just giant RC cars pretty well.
Excellent Mike 😎👊🏻
I’m a bit late to the party… but buggies only -
1. Avante
2. Terra scorcher
3. Thundershot ( my original no.2 back in 1988 )
4. Vanquish
5. Bigwig
As far as the top 5 older vintage buggys I would say 1.avante 2.egress 3.top force evo 4. dyna storm 5. hot shot.
My Top 5:
Wild One
Black Foot
Lunchbox
Ford Ranger XLT
Monster Beetle
But I can't be without a Grasshopper either.
Yeah lol 😂. It’s harder than you think to get a definite top five 😊👊🏻
