    SOPHIA IS NOT ONLY A WONDERFUL WOMAN. SHE'S A TRUE PROFESSIONAL ACTRESS.
    I'm from Naples as Sophia and I'm very proud of her because she is the opposite of common places about neapolitans.
    She got a fierce will, not lazy at all but very energetic, has always studied to improve herself in acting and learning languages: she speaks fluent English and French.
    She's not only a wonderful woman, she's a true professional, punctual and she's has always worked very hard to achieve best results in her amazing career.

    • @katievigeant
      @katievigeant 11 лет назад +12

      Cary Grant looked at my mother and aunts with the same expression. When this movie was made, Sophia was not legally married to Ponti because of Italian law and I doubt she wanted to rock the boat. Cary was still married and didn't divorce that wife until 2-3 years after the movie was released. Don't forget that, at least from a woman's point of view, Cary Grant on film was the most charming man that may have ever walked the earth. I can't think of a contemporary who even comes close. Too bad he married Dyan Cannon...

      Carl Yorke it was actually in their previous movie--The Pride and The Passion--people get this fact mixed up...the making of this was pure torture for Grant as Loren was, I believe, already married to Ponti.

No mistake their and no acting either you can tell this was genuine love the way they both looked at teacher which made the scene for me one of my instant favorites. And the song? "Almost in Your Arms" was nominated for an Oscar for Best Song (but lost to "Gigi"). It was written not by Sam Cooke but by Livingston & Evans, who won Oscars for "Buttons & Bows," "Mona Lisa" and "Qué Sera Sera." A singer is not nominated for an Oscar unless he wrote the song. The soundtrack of the movie was not nominated. I would not be surprised if James Darren or any white performer was chosen to sing the song at the ceremonies over Cooke. It was still the 50s, after all.

    I love this film, and love the part when she takes the stereotypical gaudy gown, gifted to her by the snob sister in law of Grant, and turns it into complete class, which Loren, in my mind, is. Her beauty is still with her, and us, and I don't care if she has had work or not, whatever the rumors are (I would too, if I could afford it). Favorite scene is, though, when they are driving to the houseboat, and she sings 'bing bang bong' in Italian and English. Enchanting, both of them.

    Fun fact concerning Cary Grant's view on Sophia Loren: Grant had his prejudiced reservations against "yet another Italian girl in Hollywood", but he ended up falling madly in love with this girl that there were actual plans to get married as soon as the divorce from his third wife would be final. Ironically enough, that was the same time when her other "almost-husband" of many years could finally get through with the divorce from his first wife (after having officially lived with Sophia for a long time anyway). And to top off that wild story, Ponti and Loren got married a few days before she and Grant shot the wedding scene on the set of Houseboat... Let that whole love triangle sink in for a moment! No scriptwriter could come up with such a 'the one that got away' plot.

    @spagandtuna I think, when we like certain actors, we expect much from them. Let's look at Nicole Kidman....she makes some great films, aka 'The Hours'...then makes 'Bewitched'...which was crap. I don't think 'Houseboat' was crap, but really light. Grant's detachment was the point. She was put there to make him aware of their presence. All actors, great, not so great, make films that will be classic one day, and some won't. Remember, 'Wizard of Oz' was panned when released and now, is classic.

    I love Sophia Loren in this movie. Sophia and Cary really work well together. They must have been pretty close off camera because Cary wanted to marry Sophia. I do not know what Sophia saw in Carlo Ponti except that he was Italian instead of English - a bit of a cultural difference. I also believe that Cary was already married - a big reason why Sophia did not marry Cary! Apparently Cary was willing to leave his wife for Sophia. Robert Osborne talks about it but not in great detail.

    I really do not know anything about Carlo Ponti. I am not sure if I have even seen a picture of him. Since I am Italian myself, my initial guess about Sophia's choice for Carlo would be because he was also Italian. Cary was from England. I imagine that for whatever reason she had stronger feelings for Carlo that it was also about sharing the same cultural background. I might have done the same thing if in her position.
