    In 1955 and up until the early-80's, there was no tiebreaker in place for the championship had it finished level. Richie Ginther and Graham Hill actually share the 1963 runner-up position. Dropped races would have got Ginther the position, while countback (2 wins to none) would have given it to Hill. So a tie sounds like the period-correct solution.

    • @HawkOfGP
      @HawkOfGP 3 года назад

      With that system Fangio would win also because had more 9s.

    • @SchafferPGabor

      @@HawkOfGP How do you figure? There was no tiebreaker either way, Hill, despite more wins did NOT get ranked above Ginther in the example I used.

      @@SchafferPGabor Oh whoops, I was trying to reply to someone else's comment who had come up with their own system, ha! I think you are probably right that they just didn't have a tie-breaker rule. Kind of funny though!

    Great race. Would have gone with Montjuic but Turin was really good tbh.
    About the championship, the tiebreaker gives Fangio the title (both with third places as well as he getting a win before you); that being said, both for entertainment purposes as well as bc of Turin actually not being a points-paying race in 1955 there could be a tiebreaker race Cars-style. Le Mans would be kinda fitting considering how much impact the Le Mans disaster had in the '55 racing scene and beyond, but I'd go with the Pau Grand Prix, which also a non point-paying race that year.
    Either way, great ending to a great series. Thanks for doing it, and excited to see what's next

    Just to point out, Montjuich dates back to 1933. The German teams were on the entry for the 1935-36 Penya Rhin Grands Prix. Nuvolari won the 1936 race in his Alfa Romeo 12C-36. Of course, the Spanish Civil War put paid to any further racing in the country for a while later that year.
    From other diagrams I can find, the track map looks about right. I wouldn't mind seeing a mod for the 1935 version of this circuit.
    Gordini has a hard "G" at the beginning, and seeing as blue is the official racing color of France, yes, they are French. I thought they were anyway, but that's good confirmation. It's rather like how Bugatti has an Italian name, but is in fact French. It's likely that both originate in southeast France, near to Italy.
    I will agree that I think Montjuich would have been trickier, especially the first sector with that succession of slow corners coming down the hill.
    I definitely think the actual, planned finale at Pedralbes would have suited you and the car better. You have fewer significant corners and multiple, long straights.

    • @jcgabriel1569
      @jcgabriel1569 3 года назад

      Gordini founder Amedeé Gordini is actually Italian, born Amedeo Gordini, worked as an apprentice to the Maserati brothers way back when they're still working in Isotta Fraschini. Ettore Bugatti is also an Italian, born in Milan. So, those constructors, while racing for France, had Italian roots.
      And to top it all off, the French Talbot-Lago team, which is active in the inaugural F1 World Championship season in 1950 (the works team closed in 1950 but the cars were still raced in 1951 by private drivers) is run at that time by, another Italian, a Venetian named Antonio (Anthony) Lago, who is the source of the second name (the firm is initially just named Talbot until Lago bought it in the 1930s).

    • @Villoresi
      @Villoresi 3 года назад

      @@jcgabriel1569 I could have been clearer about origins, but figured an Italian family from an Italian name could be inferred.
      I wonder then where the Maserati brothers got the mechanical knowledge to build a full car from. I know they designed what became the Type 26 for Diatto initially.
      It's odd the works Talbot team folded so soon after they'd notched up a Le Mans win. Though it seems the French makes found it especially difficult to adapt to competition after the War, and/or perhaps were unwilling to change some traditions that made things harder for themselves.

    • @jcgabriel1569
      @jcgabriel1569 3 года назад

      @@Villoresi The Maserati brothers used to work for Isotta-Fraschini, an early Italian carmaker which also made things like aircraft engines. They went to Diatto afterwards and then started their own designs when they left.
      After the war, a number of carmakers that produced high-end luxury cars found themselves in difficulty selling them postwar, and Talbot Lago is one. Postwar, Talbot Lago's range shares a good number of parts between them. Even the Grand Prix T26C racer used plenty of bits derived from their road cars, which shows the financial difficulties the company starts to suffer from.

    • @Villoresi
      @Villoresi 3 года назад

      @@jcgabriel1569 I think I had a bit of a brain fart there. I-F has a name somewhat similar to one of the high-end coachbuilders of the period, so I was thinking of bodywork and not full cars.
      Anyway, hopefully you've taken a look at the latest video on here. The 1923 season was in the middle of when the Maserati brothers were driving. I think that's about when they switched over to Diatto.

    My suggestion:
    Since there is dispute over which 3rd places count, we can hold a tiebreaker race somewhere in the US, and every driver can participate. After all, the Indy 500 was a part of the championship in those days. If neither of you score points, then we run a race at Le Mans (the full course, if it is available, and the Bugatti circuit if not) as a tribute to Pierre Levegh and the people who died in his crash.

    Also this circuit, Parco del Valentino, which I didn't even know existed until today seems like an extremely fun and very pretty looking venue. It's quite impressive how well a lot of these GPL circuits are modelled considering the limitations of such an old game.

    From what I can see of the scoring system is that the fastest lap points are only awarded if you finish in the top ten. Also it looks like in a tie, it goes wins, fastest laps and then poles. I can't verify that yet. I am looking through a bunch of old formula one books written by Denis Jenkins

    Awesome racing, awesome season. Really enjoyed it. So heartbreaking at the end after those kerb taps! I don't even want to guess how it would be decided but my feeling is Fangio might have pinched it with more fastest laps and points scoring finishes.
    But who knows - either way those AI's need to look out for Gear Grinder Axleson in 1956!
    I think what amazed me about the driving this season was how you didn't retire at any race. A couple of questions: were these videos your first attempt or did you restart any races? Also, how was the damage setting used for you and the AI cars? I would imagine there were far more retirements in 1955, everything was so shaky, handmade, inconsistent, fragile... Even Fangio must have had the odd unlucky failure of engine, brakes, steering or electrics.
    Going to check out the '67 season next. I wonder what the 12-years-older Axleson can do with those cars???

    I'd say you won since in the races that count you got outscored him when looking at points/ positions compared. To put it simply, you scored 9, 8 and 7 points whilst Fangio scored 9, 8 and 6 points. Both total to 41 but your numbers are higher when compared to fangio. Quite a wonky solution but since they got no tie-breaker back in the day this seams like a decent solution.

  • @timonsolus
    @timonsolus 3 года назад

    In a real race, would Fangio's Mercedes team have known before the end of the race that you had fastest lap? Would that have been available via the commentary or on timings info?
    If so, would they have stuck out a pitboard for Fangio saying: 'GET FASTEST LAP' ? Or maybe 'AX FL' to let Fangio know that you had fastest lap?

    • @jcgabriel1569
      @jcgabriel1569 3 года назад

      I guess in real life, Alfred Neubauer (the famous Mercedes team manager) would be waving red flags or some such thing to Fangio, warning him that someone behind is attacking and gaining ground. He will also be waving the "go faster" flag to Moss and Kling to gain better positions.

Hamilton and the likes don't get a look in for GOAT status when you take into account the 50s and 60s era of F1 imo. F1 nowadays is a shadow of its former self. Great driving Richard aka Jake.
