I love it also because for the people of Paris, that's the final straw that breaks the camel's back. They've endured a lot of shit under Frollo, but attacking the cathedral in chase of a woman they know to be innocent, thereby breaking the unwritten rule that Notre Dame is a sanctuary and essentially attacking the spiritual center of the city is what inspires them to rise up.
Not only to protect Notre Dame herself, but all of Paris' people which is why they free the Romani and everyone rises up together to oust the evil regime.

Phoebus's call to arms to the citizen is even more epic when you think about the fact that he's technically speaking French, and so he's not just saying that Frollo declared war on the Cathedral, but also to "Notre Dame" meaning "Our Lady": Frollo is literally declaring war on the Virgin Mary! That's why Phoebus is saying "herself" as if referring to a woman and not a building! Perfect way to make the crowd even angrier at Frollo, given how much the Virgin was beloved at that time.

little details like that is sweet , makes me as an adult though wish that there was a version letting the pagan aspect of mythology that the christian religion hijacked for its own temples also shine aka , while the way quasi has some unfinished/unused gargoyle statues as friend is a sweet hint of it , just like the one roaring at frollo at the end is a sweet hint of it to
its still a long way from the mythos of how EVERY statue of a temple where a 'spiritual guardian' and technically could awaken with their stone bodies if an attacker be vile enough
would be sort of sweet with instead of the cardinals foot soldiers being turned away by a convenient endless boiling oil/tar flow ..as the flow ended , the gargoyle water caster statues all around the whole dam cathedral awoke and manned its walls & doors as living golems tossing away soldiers and blocking them from entering further ,with of course frollo sneaking past or such , only to have perhaps one of the ''represent justice first and temple guardian secondly'' statue awaken and turn its sword at him when he stood about to butcher poor frollo and esmeralda

2:47 is incredibly powerful. When I was younger I found it questionable that so much molten metal could possibly fit into that tiny cauldron
and that this must have been an error on the stories side.
Now I understand that this is far from the case, as it is obvious that this very image symbolizes the Lord barring the way to his church.

After rewatching the movie I really come to see all the scenes where God directly influences the story.
The cathedral having a seemingly infinite amount of molten metal is just one example.
My favorite is at the end of Hellfire when a guard bathed in moonlight, face unseen, tells Frollo that his temptation is gone, Esmerelda escaped. This was Frollo's prayer answered, his burden lifted but he refused God's chance and instead sunk deeper into sin.
It's a really good movie, sad it's not more popular.

Fun fact: Phoebus' lines to rally the crowd were originally going to be spoken by Clopin. But they were given to Phoebus to close out his character arc. It was ultimately the right decision, not because Phoebus needed more screen time (Clopin definitely needed more), but because it made more sense for him to rally everyone compared to Clopin. Clopin is an entertainer who can only hold a crowd's attention when he's directing them to something fun. He cannot control an angry crowd of non-Roma. Outside of his emcee role, Clopin is just another Rom who is perceived as being automatically involved in criminal activity. He's done nothing for the French Parisians that they consider worth heeding his call to arms. They have no reason to listen to him or respond to his pleas to help his people. But Phoebus is not only a French officer, he's a proven hero. He already risked his life to save an innocent family, and for that he holds sway with the other Parisians. They also have more confidence in his ability to direct them to where they're most needed as an experienced officer should. He's able to overcome the crowd's natural tendency toward bystander syndrome by properly directing and delegating.

As Frollo himself said when they first met "So this is the gallant Captain Phoebus, home from the wars."
Another thing to note about Phoebus is that, out of all the characters who were adapted from the novel into the movie, he's the one who was changed the most drastically. Everybody talks about Frollo, and rightfully so, but the basic fundamentals of Victor Hugo's original character are still there. He's still a bitter, lustful man who loses his mind but this movie puts it into a more blatantly villainous context that the original novel.
Phoebus on the other hand is unrecognisable from his book counterpart. In the novel he's a vain, slimy, shallow womaniser and quite possibly a sociopath too. He's actually MORE evil than Frollo was in Victor Hugo's story. In this version, Phoebus is the definition of gallantry. Brave, selfless, open-minded, respectful of women, a loyal friend and a skilled soldier on top of all that.

That was practically a Cap moment. You can see even during the show trial that the Parisians present aren't happy Esmarelda has been caught and that their troubles might be over, but are furious that an innocent woman, even a Romani who we've seen the city doesn't have a lot of love for, is being sent to death for false crimes. They see through his tyranny, and when Phoebus calls the Romani OUR people, they don't protest but stand with them and set them free once the battle starts. They decide "This is OUR home" and go to work. Powerful scene.

It was actually the churches that held the real power in Europe at the time. Even a king wouldn't dare order his troops to attack one of the churches in his kingdom. This could lead to war and the lords in his court would turn against him. It's the same in the Disney Robin Hood movie: The Sheriff of Nottingham took money from the poor box and arrested Friar Tuck. Even worse Prince John ordered Friar Tuck to be hanged. Bad idea. Again, this could lead to war and the lords turning against the king. Even the kings had to follow the church's rules to keep their crowns.

@@baddriversofmoosejaw8681 generally yes though there were times that the balance was not always in favor of the Church and certain medieval and even pious kings would even go to war with the pope (drag him and even beat him) or even certain bishops when certain personal or political matters were at stake so the power of the Church was really just one out of many that tried balancing each other out with the other

2:40 I just cannot believe how insane this specific scene is, like when the lava poures down you cen here a small bit of Hellfire in there as it pans out, and then that detail comes back when frollo falls off the tower and dies there’s a cool interpretation I found, is that when frollo falls off the tower he is quite literally falling to hell, and how he basically seals his fate when he says “and he shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit” and it comes full circle because Hellfire played when the lava came down, so when frollo fell to his death he fell into the fires of Hell.
This movie is just so near perfect

I like that there's a difference between the soldiers who are supposed to be scary and the ones who are played for laughs. The soldiers with simple archer helmets are played for laughs. You can clearly see their faces, and they're all sorts of shapes and sizes. They lose any fight they're shown having and get beaten easily, even 3 being no match for Captain Phoebus.
But the intimidating ones, the ones shown breaking down the door, invading the court of miracles, and shown not losing their fights against the people of Paris have Sallet style helmets, also made for archers but with a covering over their noses so they look through a slit. They all have the same physicality and are never shown doing anything goofy. You can't see their eyes and only their mouths. They all look cookie cutter and are shown beating or holding their own against the people of Paris, making the soldiers still feel like an actual threat, not just comedic characters that can be beaten by a gag. Giving the audience the feeling that even though the people of Paris are winning, they're on a time limit until the intimidating soldiers break down the cathedral doors.

It was such a stroke of genius to have this siege from the book appear this way! Though they changed so much about the original, I find it awesome how they made this scene, especially the "lava flow". It's one of the most brutal chapters. Quasi fights tooth and nail, spills molten metal all over the attackers, and then there's the king of the thieves and Jehan, my heart.
The fact that so much in the story is based on misunderstanding makes it all the more difficult to bear.
