Crazy & Unusual Skoolie Design Ideas | Hidden TV Cabinet & Slide Out Toilet | SKOOLIE BUILD

  • Our tiny living room gets a COMPLETE overhaul, with TONS of new and exciting additions! We add a super-comfy couch with lots of customized storage space, and even a (very tiny) chaise lounge!
    We also finally install stained wooden trim pieces around ALL of our windows for a polished, finished touch. We also added a surprise element with our trim that brightens up the living room ;)
    Our living room gets a MAJOR upgrade, since we built a hidden tv cabinet to stow-away our television when we aren't using it! This felt like a risky move, but we're making it work as best we can, and even ran an HDMI cable through the ceiling of the bus so that we can plug into our HDMI outlet, even when we're all the way at the dinette
    There is one more of our crazy design ideas that we FINALLY are testing out: our slide-out composting toilet!
    We have a Nature's Head Composting Toilet, and Natalie worked for weeks to build the perfect toilet cubby for it to slide into when we want to move it out of the way. Jimmy also builds a custom cart for it, so it can slide easily into (and out of) the toilet cubby.
    We end the week by giving you a tour of our tiny living room, where we show off all of our crazy, unusual skoolie design ideas!
    This week was truly a crazy one, and we don't have much time left before we move into our skoolie for good! We can't wait!!
    Stick around for our weekly videos, every Monday at 2pm!

    Put in a solid piece of foam in the bottom of tv cabinet, that way screen can rest on it when closed and if you are on a rough road it will help protect it from the impact

      Good idea! It might be hard to see in the video but we actually do have 2” of foam in the bottom of the cabinet. It really helps take the weight off

      Gratis idea. Maybe you could also secure the tv with a bungee cord or something similar that you can unhook when you want to watch the tv.

    The TV idea was great and works really good. Jimmy you did make the right choice, she's a jewel! You two have done a wonderful job. After you travel a year or two, you could do one of these for a couple who don't want to do it themselves as your moneymaking project.

This episode touched me...I love the way you look at each other, cheer each other on, and 30 years from now, I think it will still be the same. Natalie, how romantic is a citronella candle? The nature head is a great composting toilet … you may want to put a led light strip behind the pee tank It gets hard to see when it gets full also. Use coconut husk with some baking soda and cinnamon the cinnamon will help with bugs and mites. The baking soda will help with the smell. Put suger or vinegar in your pee tank …. …. Just a little. Help tip. From a old hippie….. love and peace Fallow your dream

    If I might make a small suggestion? Add a handle to the wood base for your toilet. In this video, you showed how you can move it in and out of the cubby space when you want to shower but you were moving an empty toilet. It will move a lot differently once there is "product" in the canisters and a handle will help make it easier to move. Also, don't leave the basket of toilet paper on the platform when showering, water travels...

    I really like the way you did the toilet in the shower thats brilliant, its something I've never seen before and I think I've seen every skoolie build on RUclips lol...
    Im get Ideas for my build. The TV is pretty cool too. I was going to say put some foam in to keep the weight of the TV but I seen someone else also had said this. You replied that you've already done this, that was smart. Really love your build and the size of your bus, its a prefect size. I had a smaller bus I just sold it so I can buy a bus the size of yours, now Im looking for my prefect bus.

    Regarding risk, the most risky thing would be to not follow your dreams. And traditional living committing to leases or home purchase, taxes, etc. Is also pretty risky. Tiny nomadic living makes great financial sense. So in this way you're not risking much!

    I think those hooks should be fine. You're not going to have it open when you're driving, and when it's open, most of the weight is on the piano hinge. My only concern is the stress on the counter when driving with it closed. If the foam under it is really bearing a lot of the load, it should be fine. It's a great, creative design. Well done! :)

    • @JimmyandNatalie
      @JimmyandNatalie  3 года назад +1

    Pretty cool. The only problem is you can't plumb the line to the grey tank.....unless you come up with something that recoils back as you move it....hummmm

    • @JimmyandNatalie
      @JimmyandNatalie  3 года назад

      True! It’s not perfect but the toilet comes with a ~5ft flexible hose that we are using so when it is pushed all the way back, it just coils back on itself. And we made the cubby almost a foot longer than needed just to have room for that tubing

    I had the same problem with a bright control panel by my head in my semi. I took a bandana and figured out how to drape it. It doesn't completely darken the panel, but it also doesn't interfere with temperature sensors. I haven't taken the time to figure out if a rubber band would be helpful, since what I've got works. Thought I'd share that idea.
    Could Natalie look any happier??? 😉

    • @JimmyandNatalie
      @JimmyandNatalie  3 года назад +1

      That sounds like a great solution! We will definitely need to rig up something similar. Since the weather has been so hot, we usually just keep the heater unplugged from our fuse block, but that probably won't work too well when the weather gets cold and we actually need to use it... 😅
      And no, I don't think so! There's just so much to be happy about this week! 😄💚

    I think that, if in addition to your TV hooks on the upper cabinets, you also put locking brackets from the bottom (over supports), you might feel better about the sturdiness of it.

    I really like your toilet cubby. How are you going to keep the wires for the fan from getting run over by your cart?

    • @JimmyandNatalie
      @JimmyandNatalie  3 года назад +2

      Thank you! We don't really mention it, but you can see the wires very briefly (timestamp is 22:46), but the wires for the fan are zip-tied to the large exhaust tubing, and that seems to do a good job of keeping them out of the way of the wheels. That's definitely a good question though, that could really cause some issues if those got damaged 😬

If Jimmy puts a recessed lid on that couch drawer whaen you pull it out toss a cushion on it and whala...it becomes another chaise bump out where as you sit next to one another to watch t.v. you can rest your legs....😎😎😎😎

  • @JB-dz1zc

    Everything turned out great! I have one question, what happens to the toilet if you have to slam on the breaks while driving?! You might need a lock down of some sort(cabinets and drawers also). Bet y'all are excited to move in! 👍 🚃 👋 👫 😉

    • @JimmyandNatalie
      @JimmyandNatalie  3 года назад +1

      Thanks! Most of our drawers have some kind of latch (some have barrel latches, and some have roller catches) to help hold them closed.
      As for keeping the toilet in place, we are planning to keep it in the shower area most of the time (unless we are using the space to shower), where the floor is a bit lower than it is in the toilet cubby. This seems to do a good job of holding the toilet in place, and doesn't give the toilet much room to move around.
      We haven't tested this with very much driving, but hopefully we won't have too many issues! We'll find out very soon though! 😅
