After listening to this song for the first time back in 2015, I immediately picked up a copy of Tracy Kidder's Mountains Beyond Mountains. I was mesmerized. By the time I finished reading, I had decided to translate the book into Greek. The story is so inspiring, I thought Greek kids and students should be able to read it in their native language. I am not a professional translator though, I am a maths teacher, so it took a while to find my way through. Yesterday, my translation "Βουνά πέρα απ' τα βουνά" was published! And it all started here, so I thought I should pay a little tribute to the greatness of good songwriting.
How obscure .
Very cool!
That is beautiful. I have not read the book but you have inspired me to do so. I hope that your translation finds it's way into the hands and hearts of many.
❤️
Bravo sou!
I’ve listened to this tune for a decade... and never seen this video. What a lovely treat. 😆
Same until tonight!
Me too!
Same!
today is the first time too!
They heard me singing and they told me to stop,
Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock,
These days, my life, I feel it has no purpose,
But late at night the feelings swim to the surface.
'Cause on the suburbs the city lights shine,
They're calling at me, 'come and find your kind.'
Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small,
Then we can never get away from the sprawl,
Living in the sprawl,
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains,
And there's no end in sight,
I need the darkness someone please cut the lights.
We rode our bikes to the nearest park,
Sat under the swings, we kissed in the dark,
We shield our eyes from the police lights,
We run away, but we don't know why,
And like a mirror these city lights shine,
They're screaming at us, 'we don't need your kind'
Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small,
Then we can never get away from the sprawl,
Living in the sprawl,
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains,
And there's no end in sight,
I need the darkness someone please cut the lights.
They heard me singing and they told me to stop,
Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock.
Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small,
Can we ever get away from the sprawl?
Living in the sprawl,
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains,
And there's no end in sight,
I need the darkness someone please cut the lights.
She is unreal. Everyone needs a little Regine.. 💃😎🎸🌹
3:17 that key change - pure goosebumps
That's when you feel the chills down your spine
Agreed, this is the moment when my eyes open wide and I start floating in the air.
Always loved that.!
For me Arcade Fire should be in the top five greatest bands of all time. They really connected withy generation (born 87) and helped me not feel so alone in a material world.
Born 87 like you and I love Arcade Fire so much. Their songs give me a place in the world.
1959. Love Arcade Fire.
also born 87. this song makes me cry like a baby every fuckin time. sometimes im hopeful, sometimes im desperate. but everytime im shaken to the core
2006 so kinda on the younger side here, listened to this since I was a baby. Thanks dad!!!
Greatest band of the 21st Century. David Bowie was a good pointer!
Debatable
Damn what a unique song. A 2010's and 1980's crossover. With a sprinkle of Blondie.
Damn this song was way ahead of its time does anyone else agree ?
no, not really. it's only like 10 yrs old
@@cesarrodriguez8893 yeah, but it feels like a very *modern* indie song
@@antoniotoronto4132 it is very 80s tho
@@panagisgouvelis2184 eeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhh
Kinda, not really. It is very synth-y
It hurts. It seriously fucking hurts how raw and primordial and gorgeous this song and this singer and this video are. I think you can tell great art by the amount of times you consume it and still get inspired from it. I feel the same way about Guided by Voices. I've listened to the same songs thousands of times and still shake my head in awe. Long live Arcade Fire and Guided by Voices!
First time watching the video, but you put it quite well. Still good.
Hurts so good.
I heard this song being played in a shopping mall yesterday. Couldn't help but have a little chuckle to myself at the irony.
"We run away, but we don't know why."
That is it. Absolute genius. I hope that in 1000 years the students will be shown this song.
Rest in Peace Dr. Farmer.
I know Arcade Fire for some time. Already their first album i liked it and second album convinced me, that Arcade Fire are really good band...For some time i did not pay attention to them and until recently i have returned to their music. I played their third album The Suburbs. And I completely froze, obviously in a good sense... Without exaggeration, i was amazed, at how excellent album The Suburbs is! Each song is a fantasy, original. For me, is The Suburbs one of the most interesting albums, I've ever heard. And this song is absolutely stunning, it is my favorite of the entire album. Régine has a really beautiful voice, the song she clearly raised to higher realms, to perfection! Also, i think the movie is a success, i have no words...According to me, every time, when the band enters the stage, her performance is also a theatrical performance, that always impress. I know, that Canada and the US have many musical giants and great cult bands, and i regard Arcade Fire to the best bands in the world... Sorry for my terrible English... :-)
Hey Tomáš, your English is not terrible at all! This is one of my favorite songs on The Suburbs, too.
Justin Vincent Thank you, Justin! Arcade Fire is amazing band, i would like to see a concert here in the Czech Republic...Greetings from Czech Republic! :-)
Tomáš Goubej Yeah this album actually won the 2009 grammy for best album.
Justin Vincent full marks for diplomacy Justin, but to be fair his English is a bit dodgy..
+Martin Harrison I've seen plenty of native English speakers using English several times worse on RUclips comments. Cut him some slack, grammar rules don't apply here.
to the children ....never lose your love and imagination....build sand castles and sing..

This song sees no water. It sees suburban soccer fields. Recognize what the fuck it's talking about, ROW BEAR
Honestly shocked this only has 3 million views
Cry every time I hear it. Emotions full of sadness, happiness, and everything in between. Beautiful.
Pensé que era la única a la que le pasaba.
im 63 & arcade fire is the best band on the planet.
geo charles A good one Geo charles!
Yes they are
+geo charles Funny to see people proudly saying "I'm old and I listen to Arcade Fire!". I listen a lot to the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, the Byrds, and other quote-unquote "oldies" on RUclips, and on comment forums of songs from *those* bands, you will see at every turn comments saying "I'm and I still listen to !". Since Arcade Fire is a contemporary band, I guess it appears to be out of the ordinary for old folks to like it, so it's kind of the reverse of 60s/70s bands: people expect old people to listen to the Beatles and young people to listen to Arcade Fire. Great that you like Arcade Fire, sir, and I think more people who grew up on the "oldies" groups I listed above should listen to Arcade Fire. It's the closest thing we have to a modern Pink Floyd.
I'm commander Shepard and this is my favourite band on the citadel
it was :'(
now they are the best disappointment on the planet. I'll always be trying to think Arcade Fire has done, and listen their first three albums like hasn't seen new ones
a while back i was at a comedy gig and before the gig started this song was playing on the PA. At the time I had no idea who it was. I instantly reached for my phone to shazam it only to be met by connection issues. I was left wondering for an eternity who it was. I hopelessly attempted to hum it to people but it was a lost cause. I Couldn't even recall a single lyric only segments of the beautiful melody. A few days ago my brother put it on and I could have cried with joy. its now one of my all time favourite songs.
this is such a good story! this is my favorite song as well.
ok why was that an emotional roller coaster. write a fucking book you have talent
@Blia Yang Being a bit of an arse, I see...
Love me some Shazam! Check out Throw Me the Statue, and hit me up if you find their song Snowshoes performed live
Powerful testimony & even greater of a song. So happy you connected w it!
Love you Bowers x Love you Brighton x Love Endorphins dancing around like a teenager again!!
I drove through the Cascade mountains recently and jammed to this song on repeat. Sun shining, windows down, volume up. It was glorious.
The whole album is a PNW vibe
on an enviromental economics exam, for sprawl i wrote "dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountians."
Pim Fortuyn
idk...but i put that as well.
the reference fit.
not sure, but the grade was good.
gumbo You come off as an ableist piece of trash.
That's funny, you a cool dude
LoneCommenter Haha that response got a chuckle out of me.
I love how she angrily sings "world so smaaaaalll" it's small minded that's for sure! Epic song of recent times..loaded to the brim with atmosphere and the ability to knock you on your Arse at first listen
*weren't so small (sorry to nitpick)
I always come back to this song .. Its one of those rare ones where I REALLY feel in contact with my soul.
Heard this song for the first time this weekend. I can't stop listening to it, glorious track!
Such a great album. Dive in, friend
Heard this song in 2010.
Found it today.
Cry a lot.
10 years later still obsessed
This song is so true. I live in the suburbs, and man can you see the spraw all around you. Can't see many stars from all the light pollution. Maybe I should move to Montana.
1:54 best part of the song, when the synths kick in
This song has the power to make me feel like a kid again
She has a beautiful voice.
This song is my happy pill for shitty days. There's just something hopelessly optimistic in the synth/lyrics that cheers me up.
Wow. I got tears in my eyes each time. Goddamn. She can make a grown man cry
She is just cuteness personified...
Cuteness Personified Battles The Suburbs!
She's a Montrealer!
From 1:29 to 1:44 is so adorable, and that cheeky look at the camera as well haha!
Bahdageet caitlin ridriguex us god Dr levels britiandars Sean Connell product in...
After having seen this video for 100 times, and after having heard this song possibly 500 times, I still get goosebumps everytime I hear it
TomatoSlayer
I like the song, and arcade fire in general, because they are defining reality, with good melodies, lyrics. The videos show these communities for what they are. As someone who grew up in the suburbs, but also lived in cities and goes back and forth. I feel Arcade Fire's vision is spot on.
why?
This will never get old for me. Such great song writing and so much delicious synth goodness!
TomSteenblok mee too!!!
Only a few songs or bands in my life have been able to move me to tears with their music. This was one of them. The lyrics "I need the darkness someone please cut the lights" resonated very strongly with me at dark times in my life, and still does.
Along with the whole sentiment of the song really. I was glad to see an album that actually deserved it for once win the Grammy for Album of the Year that year.
My goodness! What an amazing song!!!!
Love the 80's vibe so much...
ok I love it so much
Yeah, you better!!! :)
Abhi 275...
It has a very ABBA vibe also, love it 😍
@@brightstarlit So true!
I think this song and video may be my favorite on earth. I've probably watched it 100 times. The first time I really digested the lyrics, I was in the process of moving from a small town to a city, and being a gay male musician, I thought that moving to a city would be like a safe haven. The lyrics "they're calling at us, come and find your kind" are later conflicted by "we don't need your kind!" is such a masterful line, stating that prejudice is everywhere. It's a strong reminder that we're not alone in our struggle for acceptance. Thanks for making this beautiful piece of work.
Cody Copeland Yes! Once I read the lyrics and caught the "we don't need your kind" line, it took the song to a whole new level of brilliance.
Cody Copeland Nice observation but I think the (non) acceptance of one's kind goes beyond the obvious prejudices (sexuality or race), to me it's really about the mind, behaviour and soul that don't fit the norm.
Cody Copeland Arcade Fire is one of the Worst Bands I have ever heard! Neither Win nor his wife can sing; their voices are pathetic!!! But, if you like them, go for it!!!
Scott Pollack In that case One Direction >>>> Bob Dylan, admitedly those boys can sing and Dylan's voice is terrible. It's not only about vocal talent, but the artist (not the producer) putting together a quality material from artistical stand point.
+Scott Pollack u have be kidding me...theyre brilliant....
Saw this live today. One of my favourite lifetime moments.
The suburbs it's their best album. I hope their fifth work be as great as this.
+A. Everard. R. Funeral is their best in my opinion
That's fine ;)
Funeral then suburbs for me
There's some amazing stuff on Reflektor too.
I would have to say Funeral is their best too. It's probably one of my favorite albums of all time. As near to perfect as I have experienced so far. Not taking anything away from Suburbs though, still an amazing collection of music.
One of the greatest songs I have ever heard in my life.
this was the last track that seriously kicked the living shit out of me with astonishment.. a very rare occurrence.
4 years later on from the release of this song/video and it still ranks as the closest thing to perfection as a music video can achieve. A masterful representation of high-art pop gone burbs. Arcade Fire are like what the Talking Heads were to me in the 80's. Just a superb art-pop musik band.
Talking Heads greatly inspired Arcade Fire, so it's no wonder you think of them in the same light!
"And you may find yourself
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I post here?" yee-ouch!
this video explains me perfectly. so many that just gave up on enjoying every moment in life.
She has a really great voice. Her and Win, music royalty
It feels like a century since this came out and nothing has changed.
Only accelerated.
I was looking for a recent comment on this song.
A lot has changed my friend.
@@Tessa-zr5lw Right, more people have been murdered by cops, some dudes doing treason.
But, there is the light in the night: Detroit pizza.
haha, I sort of resent them a bit, because I didn't even grow up in a suburb, I grew up in a dying rural town and it was awful in a lot of ways, but at least I was "free" in some senses but it felt really hopeless. I always wished I lived next to a city to escape to.
who gives a shit
I can imagine. I'm living in a dying suburb but my friends and I make the most of it

@@slugggerSalute slugger, you nailed it. Best RUclips comment I’ve ever come across and a truth bomb I’ve been wanting to drop on our idealistic younger people for a long, long time but I have not come close to having the words to do it justice. I hope that you are well.
I am writing something on youtube for the first time. And sometimes when i feel the world so small, and when I need some darkness, i always play this
I know this is 3 yrs old but welcome to RUclips ^·^
lovely comment
Regine is absolutely fantastic!
This is everything I have ever felt.
Definitely in the top ten songs of the decade.
This song is the reason why I became a city planner.
Amazing if this is true
I think u may have missed the point of the song.
I think you aren't quite sure what city planners actually do.
Gees i dunno-do they make furniture? lmfao
Good for you...Good for you...
This song and music video reminds me of the good times we used to have in America. A time when, for some of us, amongst our biggest problems were feels an angst to get out of a small town or to get out of the urban sprawl of a city.
Times were good then. I hope we can make America great again, and get back to a point where these trivial things are our biggest problems.
This is one of those comments you make just because you don't have anyone else to say it to. My boyfriend showed me this and I got so amazed I started loving him a little more. I didn't knew arcade fire. Maybe my parents wont accept my gay relationship, but when he shows me videos like this, I just get so happy. He makes me feel home.
+Godasification Mi amor!
+Godasification That's a great feeling to have. If only it was a female that made you feel that way.
+Christopher Walker you're so cool wow. I can't wait until I'm a piece of shit one day!
the hell kind of thing is that to say
I'm sorry your parents don't accept your feelings for others of the same gender. It's a really outdated way of thinking, even though gay people have existed for centuries. Heck, even Shakespeare was gay! Shakespeare was unique and so are you! Clearly you are not meant to be like the rest:) It doesn't matter if they don't accept you-what matters most is if you accept yourself. Don't let others' opinions stop you from being happy dude! Especially with movies coming out lately that support homosexuality such as Call Me By Your Name or Love, Simon, I hope they can come around to seeing that love is love. I wish you the best!
Freakin' brilliant song/video, can't stop watching/listening!!
i love it and u but i am like the 1 music lover i know every song
never thought you'd be here bash
me too
YEP...this is a fantastic song
YEP.....this is one of their best songs......great video too
I grew up in LaSalle and chilled in Crawford Park.. this makes more sense than you could imagine.
For everyone who grew up in the suburbs, this is such a beautiful expression of our experiences. Thank you AF
sometimes I wonder if the world's so small, can we ever get away from the sprawl???
I love Arcade Fire, I've seen them live 3 times and I want to see them more than that! I love all their albums but this has to be one of my favourite songs ever.
Today Régine turned 42. Happy birthday to this wonderful and inspiring musician ❤
this is filmed on in my hometown,!!! and the soccer field where i played as a kid!
Just heard this recently. It sounds so much like Blondie's Heart of Glass. Great lyrics and tune.
I love this song, and i think it has to be my favourite Arcade Fire song ever. I love all their songs and albums but this really has struck a chord with me. I live in rural Ireland commuting to the Big Schmoke (Dublin) every day and I hate seeing how it's sprawling out to rural areas, eating up the land and no-one knowing their neighbours, whereas the area I grew up in was a community sort of place where we looked out for our own. In towns/cities you don't get that anymore. I was there in the Point/3 Arena last night and they were absolutely awesome!!!!!!!
she may be the most beautiful creature I've ever seen.
This is my son's favourite song. He's two. But he has great taste in music,
The song is 10 years old? Wow feels like only a few years...
I was just thinking the same thing...
This is my favorite song ever I’m so glad it came into my life
Most of the video was filmed in the neighborhood I grew up in. :) I recognise the park, and so many of the houses are down the street from mine. It's crazy, I love arcade fire so much!
Is there beauty in sprawl. I've lived in L.A. and NJ most my life so sprawl is what I know.
This is Art.
This has to be one of my favourite Arcade Fire songs ever! It's so realistic and haunting at the same time, because it basically sums up the society/word we live in.
Régine Chassagne is wonderful human being and her being the soul star of the this video only makes it more amazing than this song already is. Régine, keep dancing so the whole world will too
Filmed in my old home town of Lasalle, Quebec!
Genius!
"We run away, but we don't know why..."
Pure genius!
Arcade fire is a very talented band..
80s would be proud if we have even more songs like this in our days :D
Was at Apple HQ working under Mr. Jobs when this song broke. Very, very fond of the time and the song!!!! --Stuart
This song sounds so 80's
But better........................
It's like the 80's, but with 36 recs
It's what the 80s wishes it could have been.
Possibly the best song ever created by mankind to this day!
Electricity0 definitely not but it's pretty good
Perfect for lockdown life.
I think I get it. Its about being tired of the world you were given, and becoming detached from it in your hunger for an alternative. Whatever it is. Its deep. Its beautifully executed. Mysterious and simply excellent modern music.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG
She is so interesting looking, great band,
I need the darkness, someone please cut The light. Fantástico Arcade Fire
i love her spirit ITS ALIVE AND AWAKENED!!!! her excitement for life is contagious.........bee you tea full
And people say there's no more good music
People that say that probably grew up to great artists like the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon , Fleetwood Mac, and Van Morrison among many others great artists that perfected their craft and the few record companies looked for talent with elite songwriting and great lyricists...the combination of a less saturated music scene, record companies valuing substance and real talent, and artists in general growing up with music aimed at an older age group for the first time targeting a younger audience.. resulting in smart beautiful music with an intelligent meaning and rebellious and catchy at the same time dominating record charts so the entire country was exposed to this great music...of course we know this still exists but you have to work to find it which makes the art more rewarding when you discover a song like this....granted this is one of the few bands in the last 20 years that achieved commercial success without sacrificing my opinion of quality....a few that check these boxes and essentially restored my faith in humanity are Radiohead, Modest Mouse, The Shins, Vampire Weekend, Future Islands, The White Stripes, The National and Cold War Kids
@@shannonmaloney3626 Perfect

Out of nowhere, this comes on my RUclips.....HOLY COW, WHAT A SONG!!!!!!!!
Totally overlooked this by more than 6 years, sorry Arcade Fire!!
I always liked this song, and found the video very intriguing. Then I saw them play it live last time they were in Vancouver, 2017. It blew my mind! I felt like it set the place off. This moment will be forever imprinted on me, it was beautiful.
Every time I get to 3:18 I always think of Sigourney Weaver saying "Are you the Keymaster?" 😂 Such a great song and vid, I hope to never get tired of it
Not a single disparaging comment, and all the comments are given thumbs-up. There's something about Arcade Fire that brings out the best in people.
Não dá pra descrever o que sinto quando escuto essa mulher cantando. Regine, é perfeita! Arcade Fire é perfeito. Banda da vida!
Without a doubt, my favourite song and music video ever. Pure musical euphoria.
I've been looking for this song for almost 7years. And having only the memory of a girl dancing in the field. You have no idea how happy I am rn asdfghjkl
Seeing you at Mad Planet was one of my greatest Neighborhood Music Memories
I'm feeling your magic so I'll share a poem
Dreamer adjacent
forget what I meant
tumble to freedom
of bodies not meant to touch
love comes in clutch
but it slips when you choke
I misspoke in terrible tongues
forever young
got me crucified
I collide in momentum not seized
just believed in full glory
my story not fit for lips
that I can’t kiss until I miss
this yes this
the future yet not passed
gassed for dreams forgotten
the past is rotten but we move on
because hope is different than momentum
pass first mentality allows someone else to score
can’t ignore the signs whether they blink or not
I forgot because I don’t care if I remember
because that my dear is the beauty of September
did I tell you how I fall before I bloom
no room for complete truths
because we are still learning with curves
slide my way into how it feels
I’m real but I’m working on that
manufacture my love in card form
to avoid the hard norm
I want to work in agreement
as we agree in what we meant
trust hearts to provide guidance
blinking life rebellion
my little hellion
Im proud of a love loud
that rejoices as it voices our pride
just to be born again
it’s ok to be ok
just to be warned again
it’s ok to be ok
committed to life moving forward
with sideway maneuvers
I blister for revolution that I can pray for
we delay for a time that just feels right
so we can move on in acceptable patterns
hey city are you finally done with me
can I try somewhere where it is known
I’m wanted with the Dedication grown
give me a Poster so I don’t waste my life
in a cowboy less fate where I hesitate
and die on the cross I never prayed to
No Rival Just Survival
God Bless The Tip the Hat People
because they won’t get it
just forget it
why try when we can deny
it matters ohh yes it matters
hold my hands out
but will you slap them
positive emotion I give permission
to a love that we have been all missing
we share the burden of getting the point
on a rebound I look for the outlet
Shock Shock Shock
I feel your Power
and I thank you
10 años de esta canción. Siempre será de mis favoritas...❤
