Lyrics
They heard me singing and they told me to stop
Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock
These days, my life, I feel it has no purpose
But late at night the feelings swim to the surface
Cause on the surface the city lights shine
They're calling at me, "come and find your kind"
Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small
That we can never get away from the sprawl
Living in the sprawl
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains
And there's no end in sight
I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights
We rode our bikes to the nearest park
Sat under the swings, we kissed in the dark
You shield my eyes from the police lights
We run away, but we don't know why
Black River, your city lights shine
They're screaming at us, "we don't need your kind"
Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small
That we can never get away from the sprawl
Living in the sprawl
Dead shopping malls rise like mountains beyond mountains
And there's no end in sight
I need the darkness, someone please cut the lights
They heard me singing and they told me to stop
Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock
Sometimes I wonder if the world's so small
Can never get away from the sprawl?

ive been looking for this song for 3 years, its my dads favorite song and he used to play it for me when i was a kid and we would dance around the living room. he passed away in 2018 and all ive been doing is looking for this song and i just remembered me calling it the angel song because he told mne the women singing were angels. i looked up arcade fire angel song so many times i cant count. then i remembered seeing something about mountains. i found it now and i can finally just listen to it.

The best thing about this track is how the prechorus gets progressively intense

I used to listen to this in Korea, looking from the mountain tops at the infinite sprawl of buildings. It meant everything in those moments.
Hello from Cheongju hahah
Wow.
Did you serve in the military in korea?
Amazing Im certain you'll remember that feeling forever
This was my "train song" taking the train into the city for internships and classes before i moved here. has since become an anthem of sorts. There's nothing like watching the world go by glistening and promising and small and gigantic.

Love Regine's voice. She needs to front more songs on their albums.
you got your wish
Why are you reading this? 😂true ,her vocals on electric blue are off
Reminds me of Heart of Glass by Blondie
Teddy Holiday That's not at all what those lyrics mean.
Teddy Holiday I saw them live and her vocals are everything. She did the Electric Blue high note just like on the original song.
Underrated Arcade Fire song in my opinion. Amazing production, message, and of course the singing. One of my favourite Arcade Fire song in this album.
ahh I agree!
What's the message
I dunno about underrated. It's an amazing song but I usually see it and Rebellion (Lies) being regarded as the band's best songs.
The message is about getting away from city life (the sprawl) and doing things in the dark. It's about how the city is viewed as a place of anonymity, yet they always have the lights on, like someone is always watching. Its also about placing value on life's simple things
This is not just an underrated Arcade Fire song, but it's just overall the most underrated song! Everything about this song is just so beautiful: the lyrics, the message, Regine's voice, her childlike manners, the music, that killer instrumental after the second chorus... I can't think of a song more beautiful than this one!!! Although this band is really famous, they are still extremely underrated!!!
"They're screaming at us, 'We don't need your kind.'"
Really felt that. Especially at these times.
This song... Never gets old. And so underrated.
What do you mean by these times?

It’s 2023 and I’m just discovering this song. LOVE IT
I grew up a few blocks from where all this was filmed, still blows my mind LOL
How does every single Arcade Fire song manage to make you feel so nostalgic? This is only my second time hearing this song and I feel like I've known this band forever. I love coming across bands like this so much
Mikaela Howard it happens to me with The Decemberists.
Mikaela Howard it’s also extra nostalgic because all those places are minutes away and that mall is gone, it’s now an ugly strip mall
Well said!
Because it sound like ABBA.

I love Regine and how full of life she is. You can see it in her face. You can see it in the way she dances. You can see it in the way she sings. It is so inspiring.
I just saw them play yesterday, and she is such an amazing force. Unbelievable stage presence.

It's so refreshing after watching so many put on mock faces for the camera. Her energy seems real and contagious.
You can hear it in the audio, but its another thing seeing her visually, recorded or live
Her vocals are an amazing mix of Debbie Harry and Bjork. There's something incredibly genuine and raw about the emotions she puts into her performance. She lives the words.

@@phillipjordan4297 lol I was 15 when I found them I'm 28 now enjoy them 😃
I see this song as symbolism against restrictive and rigid conformity, with how the people all look the same and are wearing the same colors. At the end Regine bursts out like a butterfly in neon colors, rejecting this absolute restriction. Love it.
What a tired message. All people conform eventually.
I saw this live, each time Regine sang "I need the darkness someone please cut the lights" the theater went completely dark, it was simply *amazing*
Amazing what a experience
@@sunsetpeach7y it was one of the best concerts i've ever seen, maybe the best
Yup, every time
One of the reasons I love Arcade Fire so much is they help you "wake up" and see the reality we are living in for what it is... and instead of getting down, you realize how much beauty you can create out of the realization. :')
💚💚💚
Hipster AF. I love it. For anyone that doesn't know, the Sprawl is a concept invented my William Gibson who's actually considered the father of the Cyberpunk genre. The Sprawl is a conglomerate of a lot of cities into one huge super city.
Nice fact mate
Sounds like Los Angeles county, or basically from there all way through orange county on to San Diego, it's one continuous city all the way to Mexico
I love this album for the sheer reason that they're writing about like the *least* sexy thing a rock band could possibly write about- the SUBURBS. But they created something totally unique and new but simultaneously truly relatable, like a shared memory of a home that doesn't exsist
anymore.
The fleeting 70's-90's suburban American experience was shared, despite what state you lived in, anywhere across the country, "move your feet from hot pavement and into the grass". It's that childhood experience, running around barefoot between your house and the neighbors' that you could have only had back when there *was* that freshly-laid, jet-black, sun-soaked pavement of the street right up next to that lush, cool, green grassy suburban lawn, coated in water droplets from the sprinkler... before the time when parents preferred their kids to stay inside, inside the safety of their houses and before the fascination of the internet took every kid's attention away from running around outdoors. It was a very specific place in time but it was also *every* place.
You can write!
I’m poor from another country so I never experienced this but I love this album so much lol
And in Canada too! They're a Canadian band.
@@witchykittyy Heads up -- the suburbs kinda suck despite how much money they cost. If you manage to move to the US or Canada, don't go to the suburbs. Stick to the city.
Man, spoken from the heart. It really made me reflect back on the days of being young again. Not a care in the world or major responsibilities
I can’t decide what’s more mesmerizing and exciting - Arcade Fire’s music, the quick cut sequences, or Regine’s dancing. 😆
Props to the director for making an excellent accompaniment.
Regine is a beautiful name.
This goddamn video made me feel like i was fire, the dancing si something else
"The Suburbs" came out ten years ago... cheers.
yeah wild, the suburbs is still one of the best most complete albums ever made in my opinion
So many of these shots seem taken straight from my hometown. Arcade Fire is the band of our generation. So many of us grew up resenting suburbia, or at least held/hold conflicting feelings about it, even if we didn't realize it at the time. It feels empty, mind-numbingly sterile and isolated. It feels familiar, too, of course. In cities across the American interior, hundreds of thousands of Millennials have been trying to rebuild their urban cores and return to the communities and values that the 1980's destroyed. I hope we can find a way to cope with the all the destruction and decay.
LaSalle represent! The empty field is literally 5 minutes away from my childhood home. They are building condos there now...
Read my comment above, I think we share a lot in common in that regard
Oh yeah! I recognize rue Shevchenko, Lasalle. Maybe the vacant lot at the beginning has now condos...🤪🤑

I walked out the door. It was early in the morning and the church bells were ringing. It was cold and the air was crisp. I was warm though, I had just heard my new favorite Cyndi Lauper song come over the air on my pocket radio. I went on to have one of the best days of my life. That was in 1983. This song took me back to that day better than the DeLorean in BTTF ever could have. This young lady has an old soul, and it's glowing brighter than the Sun. This is pure genius, you know that right?
I just enjoy a lot your comment. Peace.
@@marcelloribeiro2750 Thank you for you kindness, peace and blessings to you and yours.
This song evokes emotions and feelings that I didn't know I had deep inside my subconscious. The best I can put it in words is yearning for the
timeless idyllic existence when you only remember melancholic loneliness, un-raveling the coiled up dimensions of joys and sorrows of human interactions
and attempting to characterize the infinite ripples of our sadness with finite attributes.
Absolutely, I couldn’t have said it better myself. It’s absolutely a yearning song.
*"We rode our bikes to the nearest park*
*Sat under the swings and kissed in the dark*
*We shield our eyes from the police lights*
*We run away, but we don't know why"*

This song reminds me of the streets of New York and walking back to my apartment stoned when it was fucking cold. Their music became a soundtrack to life.
+spaceydecember ... Which sector of New York?
+M krump midtown
((By google map this sector have alot of buildings)) In the video: we see more suburb houses kind... Ho well I respect for your view of it.
Well their music also says,
"Someone please shut the lights."
or
"Feel like I've been living in a city with no children.."
or
"Then I'll dig a tunnel from my window to yours"
or
"I don't want to live in America no more."
or
"They're screaming at me, come and find your kind" (Talking about street lights)
So it was very very relevant.
We used to get so high on Arcade Fire that I sold my SLR and flew to Chicago to watch them in concert. It didn't cover the cost but it was worth the late 20's tomfoolery.
She is too adorable. I love her voice and her mannerisms she's so childlike and cute
I love this comment the most.
Aaron she is hardly fat. We are just used to seeing super skinny women in music videos or super toned women. Most women are not like that.
Aaron if you think she is fat you have issues.
Aaron who cares if she put on a few pounds. That’s quite normal.
Aaron fine that’s your view but putting on a few pounds is different to being fat.

So much of their songs have such relevant subject matter. Assuming this song is about urban sprawl. Something that has shaped the face of American, and other western cultures the world over. By increasing the reliance on automobiles. And creating widespread light pollution stretching for miles. (I need the darkness someone please cut the lights)

...god, I love everyone on this page. You are my people! Not because you like this song, but because you've got some depth. The best part of this song for me is @ 2:59 to 3:14, which is basically a "whoaa, what's happening? sh#% is going sideways" moment, moving into 3:15 where Regine catches the beat and flips the whole song in a different direction. I love the little smile that comes across her face at 3:14/3:15 (she's like, watch, I got this ya'll). It very much seems the cathartic break in the song. Beautiful independence breaks out at that point. Also cheers to the little rebel @ 2:04, breaking sync with the group.

The use of Paper in this video is such an artful metaphor. And seeing Regine break through it in a red Pheonix dress with those peg leg shoes is absolutely freeing to the soul. I love the high pitched defiant optimism of this song. 'they heard me singing and they told me to stop!'', such is life when you have the luxury of self expression through Art.

Another amazing Montreal creation!... Cirque de Soleil and Arcade Fire are two of the best representations of what makes Montreal so so uniquely special!
If you haven't been there before I suggest that you go... and if you don't speak any French then don't worry because everyone there speaks English and is super friendly! It has a Europeanish feel to it (if I had to think of a made up word to describe it, especially old Montreal, beautiful!)
In 2008 I spent a couple weeks there, stayed in a quaint, clean and 200+ year old hotel for $60/night just off
St. Catherine's street & a 5 minute walk to Downtown and old Montreal... Even in Calgary at that time you couldn't find a comprable hotel room for less than $150 & an average room was just over $200 per night then.
This is the thoughts of a Calgarian.
Praying for sweet Regine's heart. Hoping it's not 💔
