I've owned the Hyundai Accent of this generation, which is practically identical to this mechanically. My favorite things were how reliable the Alpha II motor is, and how well it handles in snow. With snow tires it's a very capable and simple winter car.
I drove one new this generation. Couldn’t get over how detached it felt. The motor smelled funny. The plastics were super cheap. I was convinced it would turn to dust for someone. But I see many with a manual holding up un-expectably well!
When the Hyundai Accent version of this came out in Australia I had one as a hire car and moved house in it which was a 4 hour highway drive. They aren't rocket ships but they will get you from A to B. I shortly after bought my first car a 2001 Mitsubishi Lancer 1.5. It was built better and handled a lot better. Again no rocket ship but a great car to start on as it was reliable and cheap on gas. Now I have a 2018 Santa Fe Sport as I live in Canada 🇨🇦 now and need AWD for winter. I'm happy with it and it's good in the snow. All cars are stepping stones and hey it doesn't matter if you drive an economy car. You're smart. They are cheap on gas and parts and you're probably not drowning in a huge car loan like a lot of people are.
My first car was a 2008 Hyundai Accent GS 3-door hatch in Tango Red. Basically identical to this gen of Rio. Only options equipped were the SiriusXM radio and the 4-speed A/T (wish it had been a manual...). Otherwise, manual locks, windy windows, honestly surprised it had A/C and power steering (it wouldn't have needed the latter, that car was so light). And every time I think back on that little car... I miss it. Badly. Reliable engine, easy to work on, great gas mileage. I loved everything about that little hatchback, and if I could have another one, I would, and this time with the manual!
I bought one of these new in 2008 and it was a great car. I should have kept it longer. It was so reliable and I thought the interior was very well put together. Not a rattle or anything loose or broken after my 7 years.
Just got this car with 45k miles. The gearbox is tiny and I don’t even try to go passed 80mph the engine sounds maxed out. shockingly amazing sound system.
Own one of these but it's not stock in any sense and its the only vehicle I've owned for longer than 5 years. I like the offshoot design of the body and yes I certainly agree about the plastic trim. It's a bit of an eyesore, but at least in the refresh of the body they did away with it for color matched side trim and full color bumpers. Good review of a misunderstood little eco-box. Also, it currently has 132,455 miles on it. Base of base models so it's options are: No power anything. Steering? No. Windows? Nope. Mirrors? Ha, no. How about A/C? 4 window units. Fog lights? Yeah, no. But you do get 3 pedals, a stereo, some okay seats, Disc front/Drum rear brakes, and a heater that will roast you out of the car. Hilarious enough, it's more fun to drive than my '18 JLU Wrangler.
Ive recently just bought a 2011 Kia rio (base model, same as video) with 205,000 miles on it for a steal, ive put nearly 3,000 miles on it. Highly recommended if you find one for a good price, i get nearly 38mpg and pay nothing for gas; however, laking in air-conditioning and powered steering it does give a little to wish for, but how cares for the price! Not a bad car.
I own a 2009 model Kia Rio. I have been using it manually for about 8 months. I love my car very much because it uses very little fuel, its parts are very cheap and it has an engine that does not fail.
The optima was actually the 1st car done under the hyundai umbrella after they were purchased. The sorento also sedona 2nd gen sportage all came before the 2nd gen rio. Also. 1st gen rio didn't use escort parts. That was the sephia. Oh right also the spectra came before also.
My ex- wife had this same car with the auto. I remember telling her that car would've been nicer with the manual. She told me to shut up. LOL! It was a okay economy car though!🙃🙃😊
I had a white 2006 automatic Kia Rio sedan, it had a lot of problems, I traded it in for a 2010 Chevy Cobalt lt sedan I had the Rio from October 2006 to December 2010, THe heat broke and Kia could not fix it. I got tired of them saying it is fixed, when it was not !!
My parents had a 2005 with an automatic, it didn't even see 100K before it went to the junkyard Had to get the engine replaced due to a failed serpentine belt and the transmission went out
I have a hatchback of 2009 Hyundai Accent and the only downside is the high-mount stop lamp will be broken eventually. Find several cases that it's about the electronic problem instead of the lamp itself.
Yes, even interior lights were prone to fail on this generation Rio & Carnival’s of this generation . I think it came sown to the body control module, or whatever module controlled the interior light.
A friend of mine owns one of these in blue with the manual transmission, and it seems to serve him pretty well. Will I own one? No, it seems too small and underpowered for me. I'd rather have the Forte/Cerato.
This generation was better than the generation before. Mom had a '03 Accent, and we had a '10 or '11 Accent, this generation Rio as a rental. This generation was a step up from the previous generation, but the 3rd gen was even better. I'd drive one of these as my first car. Odd to see an SX trim without power anything, thought that trim level had such.
I still see these shitboxes everywhere. They'll run poorly forever with faded paint and trim missing but never actually die. It's good that there's still cheap beaters for basic transportation available. Kiyundai has really come a long way. They realized they could make more money by making nice cars that people actually want to buy. They're still not Honda or Toyota but they're getting there.
Also I noticed you mentioned that this Kia has some Ford parts and lol, is that shift knob out of a Ford Focus. I swear I remember seeing that shift knob in a Ford Focus that was at the shop.
i used to drive a 2006 automatic in gold, the car had reliability issues and tried to kill me on 3 separate occasions. axle was also prone to get bent when hitting any size pothole
I call BS, this car is really well built for it's price. My wife beats the hell out of it and that thing refuses to give up. She also hauls 500 kg of cement and bricks on it no problem.
I had this exact same model, down to the color and trim. It was a shitbox through and through. The manual transmission is good though, I drove an automatic of this same generation and it has the most lethargic transmission I've encountered to date.
My parents own a Cinco/5 version of this year Rio in this same color but as an automatic, unfortunately though it's dead at 90K, won't start Had some transmission issues too, honestly though this is the car of all time Funny thing too is that they used to have a 2005 Cinco in that same gold color but it went to the junkyard at 97K, on it's second engine and with a cooked transmission
Hey Zack, my dad and I want to start a youtube channel reviewing cars, but we want to know how you review cars without a dealer in the vehicle with you. When we went to try, a dealer sat in the car with us. I'm assuming you have to build a trust level with them, but I just wanted to know your process! Thanks

I second that. I had 2005 Accent and rust was the only enemy of it. Good design.
So it’s a reliable grocery- getter....
@@paulsz6194 Yup, exactly as it was designed to be.
I drove one new this generation. Couldn’t get over how detached it felt. The motor smelled funny. The plastics were super cheap. I was convinced it would turn to dust for someone. But I see many with a manual holding up un-expectably well!
This is my kind of a car. Simple, cheap to operate and dependable as long as driver doesn't push it . Good grocery getter is all I need.
I love my 09 Kia Rio LX. It has over 150k and still running like a champ
I always liked the look of these. Especially the Rio5. Very European looking with all of the black bumper trim and side moldings. My preference.
It reminds me a bit of a French car

This car is so reliable that i really recommend it. Way better than the next model. For it's price, it pays with reliability.

That chime at intro is literally my CB7 accord's and my EG hatch's headlight chime 😂😂
That chime in the beginning. Describes the time when Kia was still considered junk haha
They still are.
@@Osmium192its not 2001 anymore
Many people still think that they're junk, unfortunately.
When I was in High School in the 2000’s there would be multiple ads on the radio just giving away the first gen for free if you bought a Sedona!
Ive recently just bought a 2011 Kia rio (base model, same as video) with 205,000 miles on it for a steal, ive put nearly 3,000 miles on it.

The hatchback looks so much better
For both the 1st and 2nd gens honestly
NO.
The hatchback looks a bit like the first generation Ford Focus, but with a bigger cabin
Interesting to see you to do a manual Rio
Hope the person reading this is having a great day.
I’m not actually but thanks for trying
ts the only decent youtube comment ive ever read
I am and thanks!
So far so good. Thanks
Thanks

Hey! That gold car is my old car. RIP “Goldie.” That car had issues but it was an honest little car
A friend of mine owns one of these in blue with the manual transmission, and it seems to serve him pretty well. Will I own one? No, it seems too small and underpowered for me. I'd rather have the Forte/Cerato.
Very underpowered it needs a sixth gear
I love it when you do metaphors at the end!!
I own a 2008 hyundai accent hatchback with a 5 speed manual. It’s interesting to see the similarities and differences between the 2 cars.
Great review, especially the way you summed up Kia Rio ( and othe Kia’s) towards the end...
Well, those KIAs weren't that remarkable and had interior issues. Still better than Daewoo/Chevrolet POS.
5:21 whats so odd about that? My holes arent the same size either.
smh....
These used to be so common in Western Canada. Where did they all go?

I wasn't happy with how often the coil packs failed or how expensive the timing belt service was on my 08 accent
My first new car purchase was an "03 base base Rio
Also I noticed you mentioned that this Kia has some Ford parts and lol, is that shift knob out of a Ford Focus. I swear I remember seeing that shift knob in a Ford Focus that was at the shop.
All this deserved praise for modern Kias, and you didn't even need to include the Stinger GT.
I like these cars. 😊

1:02 there’s a cutout for the handle on the roof, but there’s no handle 😂
Nice documentary
My trunk does not stay open/held up at the top does anyone know what part I need to fix this and where to get it?
Pls do a comparison video for Lexus is350(2008) vs 2021 Mercedes Benz e350

I've never seen such body eventho we here have lots on the road even today
In Korea, this car is called Kia Pride.
My parents own a Cinco/5 version of this year Rio in this same color but as an automatic, unfortunately though it's dead at 90K, won't start

It won't start due to either bad crankshaft sensor (5 minute to replace) or fuel related stuff. Plug an scanner and it will tell you what to replace.

ding dong ding dong ding dong!
I love watching you review random npc cars xD
Why did they revert back to 4-speeder Torque Converter on the 3rd gen UB?
Can you make a review on a 2023 Rio
My sister (the only female who can drive manual in my family) has a 1st gen rio in manual and she loved that ugly green lil car back in the early 90’s
How? First rio came out in 99.
1001!!!!🎉🎉🎉 lol😂. If ya know ya know!
The Korean's quality is not as good as the Japanese
We all know that👌😂
Its old Kia from early 2000s when they still were in the same phase of being an economy brand. Its completely different now.
Genesis wants to know your location
When a 2nd gen Rio passes the BFBT 🗿
Yo! What's the slot between the hazard button and rear defrost?
i am really really really late but that's for parking stubs and cards
Good basic transportation for cheap $$$ ~+ good gas mileage..
Nice ❤
Most Rio sold in America were Auto. They didn't hold up so well. Even a first year College student would turn down this Toad.
Have this same car heat just took a shit now I’m gonna sell it
One of the most uninteresting cars I drive on a daily basis
Lol "Not Sponsored by Mommy and Daddy."
Ah. One of the deadliest car per million vehicles.
I hope the person reading this is in complete misery like the rest of us
