Hi thank you for your input on the distribution, I would like to learn more about this subject I'm trying to get noticed Help funding with my crafting, I craft paper bags and maybe other products, I also would like to start my own Dolls as well, I don't make music, I love music but I don't make music I craft and I want to know how to go about marketing and distributing, etc my bags and my Dolls and other products how to go about doing this thank you.
Short answer: Today...A record deal involves working the artist from the beginning of the creative process all the way to marketing and promotions while a distribution deal is all marketing and promotions for an act that already has an audience and completed project. Both could include advances, both could include further collaboration, both could require ownership or equity in the music, and both of these deals could be very diverse depending on how they are negotiated. Long Answer: I just recorded a 6min+ video detailing this further. Lookout for it to drop on the series titled ASL(Ask Sirr Love) on this Channel.
this only applies to a hot unsigned artist who made they own money with own fanbase shows etc..& #got major labels calling them.......this dont apply for ppl at the bottom who aint hot yet
Is a split sheet needed if it was a work for hire deal? Also if the copyright has been filed for the song as a work for hire is there any way that a producer can still receive funds possibly from BMI or would they have had to had been listed as a publisher when the copyright was filed?
If it is a work for hire in most situations usually the answer is no .. its a one-time payment for services. Just make sure you have a receipt for what you paid for. As far as the copyright you need to work out what kind of licensing deal you have with the producer. If you are doing a work for hire with a producer usually there are no split sheets involved you pay him or her usually a higher chunk of money to produce a record and you own all the copyright etc. You may pay the producer a smaller amount for there services or for the beat and split the publishing. Something like Stem would be good for that. It can be a very complex process.
Damn why though if they have partnerships directly with dsps. That’s what the CEO of empire said in interviews. So I wonder why they partnered with universal. Empire don’t need them

so a distribution deal in current times is just a venture capitalist giving you a loan but they dont get a piece of the pie just whatever the terms of the loan are.
So I have a friend that told me I had to pay for a distribution deal $10,000 that sounds bogus cuz what you're saying is that label would pay me or give me an advance on the distribution deal your thoughts
Check out Empire to see what they can offer you. I notice on Apple Music a lot of the independent artist I listen to are either signed or have a distribution deal with Empire. One of P Diddy sons is under Bad Boy Entertainment (P Diddy label) but have a distribution deal with Empire.
Short answer: Depends on your economics and the labels economics. I do not have enough information here to answer. Long answer. I just recorded a 11min answer that provides insight to help think this through. It will drop on the ASL series.

Hypothetically speaking a distribution deal would sound more ideal for indie artists who just want a bigger promo/marketing budget ?
kinda. But that's a decent way to view it
But the key to the whole process is owning your masters!
That’s right!
What are the masters?
@@roseonthebeat6352 the “master” copy, basically owning it, so many lucrative reasons when you own your masters.

What's the difference in distribution deal and signing a deal to record company?
Short answer: you own your masters with a distro deal. With a record label, they own your masters.

Is an exclusive distribution contract considered a distribution deal?
Thanks Fam!
Any time!
God bless 🙏🏾
How master p not gunna own his masters he had to do it
How do you do split sheets if u wrote the hook and verse of a song, but have a feature & they only wrote a verse
CoyiaOfficial that sounds like a personal discussion you and the other artist need to have yourselves. Everything is negotiable.
ThisisFerrariKhan I agree
But how long does a distribution deal last? And after termination can you move to another company ?🤔
Depends on the details of the agreement. They may be in for a period or for perpetuity.
@@PhaseVi damn for perpetuity that’s not cool. That’s awful if a distribution company owning your music forever
@@heatscouters7800 This is why you gotta read the contract

How do you get magazine distribution deals?
Hey, that's not really my thing. I've never helped a magazine get distributed in retail.
So I have a friend that told me I had to pay for a distribution deal $10,000 that sounds bogus cuz what you're saying is that label would pay me or give me an advance on the distribution deal your thoughts
They Spoze To Pay You!
U gotta pay the advance back
You pay back the advance through sales and gigging.
Should anyone sign a 60% artist 40% label deal ?
Main culture music?

Well we just got offered by a distribution deal by Warner 50/50. Do you think this is good deal?
No it's not...I also got offered a distribution deal 70/30 and I'm still thinking about it...30% is alot considering I have a marketing plan
Noah Alejandre yes it is
