This is what Hellboy 2019 was missing. Emotion. This is why Ron Perlman was so good as Hellboy, he portrayed Red perfectly not just physically but emotionally as well.
Which only proves that making comic book movie (or, any movie in general) R-rated doesn't guarantee it will be better than a PG-13 one. Ratings don't matter. Story and Characters do.
You're spot on. Plus the direction of Guillermo del toro is just brilliant. He doesn't rely too heavily on cgi like directors these days. Tried to keep things grounded as much as possible
Hellboy 2019 also assumed that the audience knew WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more going in about the goings on in universe than they actually did (other than diehard fans of Hellboy like myself), that and it jumped all the way to the endgame of the story rather than start closer to the beginning or hell even the middle
Exactly. 2019 Hellboy had no heart behind it because it was too focused on being “edgy” for the sake of being edgy and building a “universe” than telling a story. Everyone was dropping an f bomb in the middle of every sentence every 5 seconds and I genuinely couldnt take that seriously because no one talks like that in real life lmao. The comical MCU wannabe tone and the CGI monsters with CGI blood was also damn awful. Some people say the Del Toro films weren’t faithful to the comics and thats why the 2019 film is better than them are completely missing the fact that just because something IS comic accurate or faithful does not make it a good film.

This is one of the best scenes in the movie. The fact that this person was the physical and emotional center of his world, now gone and he can't even go to the funeral because of who and what he is. I still get chills watching it.
Very good point but I think that the entire funeral would have been made of BPRD agents and members of the government who know of Hellboys existence. So I think its more of a case of Hellboy wanting to be alone with his grief.
My favorite aunt passed away from cancer in August. One of my biggest regrets is that I never even got the chance to say goodbye to her. It’s one of the worst feelings in the world to not be able to say goodbye to someone you love.
i love how the tilt up at 1:25 establishes hellboy's character. a male protector exposed in the rain but hidden from view, the gripping of the cross, developed in the closing scenes of the film when a cross burns him but reminds him who he is...suggests his father's lesson: its painful, requires great sacrifice, to be who you really are inside, instead of conforming urself to the colonizer-prescribed fate. It's not about being thanked or being seen by ppl who are generally apathetic to ur well-being, its about being right with yourself and the world, especially when its shitting on you.
The cross does not burn him. As long as Hellboy stands on the side of the angels (or mankind, if you may) - not hell - he cannot be harmed by holy objects and such. In fact, his lineage enables some rather spectacular feats I won't spoil here.
This scene never fails to move me. It's just so touching and tragic. The score, the masterful direction of Del Toro, the wonderful characters. Poor Red can't even attend his father's funeral. That's just so heartbreaking.
And this is why we prefer this movies over the 2019 one. You can feel the character human self, feel his sadness, and despite not shedding any tears, being able to brought to us the sadness of his lost, and how he will carry on, on his adoptive father's legacy.
He actually shed tears but the rain was quite deceitful in the movie scene. He couldn't have gotten over such emotion without shedding tears for his father...😩
It never fails, every time I heard the first notes and then how he hug his Dead adoptive father's body, I start to tear up. Rest in peace John Hurt....
*crying* This scene is so sad. Hellboy was very close to Mr.Bruttenholm. And at the funeral he sees as his father is taken away to get buried, all the while he is drenched in the rain not being able to actually be there due to the people there. The music, though is very beautiful.
Hellboy (the film) is really an argument of nurture over nature. Look at the respect given his father; he was a kind man committed to his values and saved Hellboy from summary execution when the latter was young. Although he died, he left Hellboy both the inner and outer support structure to become a good man (really half-man): unconditional love and a community full of others who also gave him the same. Notwithstanding its nature as a "silly" comic book movie that I saw when I was about 10 years old, I can now appreciate this film's more mature themes since they may now speak to me at an older age: although our father figures may not last forever physically, we may internalize their wisdom and ethics, and make the world a better place for it.
Del Toro did something amazing. He took a silly concept (let's face it, demon raised by humans to protect the world is kind of silly) and turned it into 2 great movies with a sympathetic and evolving protagonist and supporting cast so well written and casted that every scene in magical and every emotional scene make you cry even a little bit. I felt the same thing with Pacific Rim. Del Toro practically made the silliest blockbuster concept and turned it into epic sci-fi mecha vs giant monster story (shame that the sequel ruined it's legacy), where you cared for thes story and the characters. Damn you, Guillermo Del Toro for making us cry with the devil (in this scene I mean literally)

Green Light Comics Well, apparently they weren't getting along, for some reason. When John Myers and Hellboy meet Professor Broom for the first time in the movie, someone says they weren't getting along. They had fought for some unknown reason.
@@GuilhermeRaveli In a dialogue between Clay and Hellboy at the beginning they dropped that the professor was angry at him because Hellboy repeatedly ran away to see Liz. I think the reason for his anger wasn't the disobedience of Hellboy, but that he got himself into trouble through those actions since the organisation needs to hide him for his own sake. Maybe he also was concerned because he saw Hellboy struggle with his unrequited love, wishing for him to have a close person besides his father in his life since he knew he'd die soon.
The lead, the head of the entire organization acting as a pallbearer. He acted as a dedicated leader to everyone of his subordinates. Even if there was conflict between himself and dome of the others. Small, but meaningful.
