No, governments need to back away and lower taxes so people like me have the freedom. Paying 60% icome tax for life is way more expensive than paying 30% and saving that other 30. We in Sweden believe in a country where people can live without huge debts from being heavily sick or too poor to be able to go to school. Our taxes on our income are usually 30% or higher if you have a really high paying job. With all this money, we can provide free health care no matter how sick you are and it will still be free and you can go to any university you want without a big debt.
There are those who will never be sick and never get children and those won't probably get as much out of this system as others. But it is an guarantee that if you get sick, we will back you up. And those people have been kids themselves and got free school and free food at the school. And now some cities are implementing free public transportations for kids during summer.
We want to let everyone have a chance to be who they want without any economical restrictions binding them. We want to treat people equally. That is the lagom way of Sweden.

Cost of childcare in the UK is ridiculous. Even when a child turns 2 and is entitled to 15 free hours for a parent who wants to work full-time is impossible because to afford the extra childcare to do this, for the average earning person, wouldn't be worth it..yet parents who don't want to work get the same amount of childcare, supposedly to find work, wonder how many of them actually drop kid at childcare and job hunt.
As a working parents you get 30 hours now.

She has never claimed any benefit. Worked her way through an apprenticeship from the day she left school. And when she went back to work wasn't entitled to any help for childcare because her son was too young for any "free" hours and when he does turn 2, even with the free hours it would still be way too expensive as she works full time. Seems like the government want people like my daughter to just give up and claim benefits. And I can guarantee that the lay abouts that ain't interested in finding work, drop kids off and go home to Facebook..makes me sick..which is why I gladly care for my grandson as I won't let the system ruin my daughter's hard work that she's done since leaving school!!

I assume that it is quite similar in Sweden and Norway. You have to earn a shit ton to pay 57% in taxes. I usually pay around 34% in Norway. And as some other people mentioned. You get lots of benefits relating to health care, partially paid kindergarten, free education. Unless you want to go to a private school. Etc.

USA, Florida: our nominal tax rate is 17% (25% bracket, 2 incomes) and private childcare was $600 to 800 monthly per child. My wife had 6 weeks maternity leave and I exhausted my vacation to stay home. My child care costs age-out though, financial challenges that are reduced each year as my children age into the school system beginning at 4yrs. Great comparisons but could do without the judgement.

The final figure quoted on income tax is not really representative of the full story, because the Swedish income tax Includes the council tax in that 50 something percentage. The council tax bills in the UK can be extortionate

I am a Swede that has had 3 children in Child care. I have a had a very good pay but still only paid about £250 a month in total for them 3 for full time care, food and everything around it. Very very affordable. Now it is 15 years since my youngest left the care and I feel really it is great that I now can pay back via my taxes as I got so much in parental leave and child care when I needed it. I see it as a "redistribution" over my life time. I get great support when I need it as a young family and with care when I am old. When I am not getting the benefits I am paying to the system....Brilliant.
(As I got my children about 30 years ago the cut for maximum compensation affected me but I wanted to be with my children some so I was home for some months even as a dad. Now a days many companies compensate so it is 80% on the full salary to promote that the parents share equally and don't need to select due to problem that the cut of the system gives. )
I think children below the age of three or four should be with their Mums 24/7. When I was growing up, my Dad supported my Mum, so she could be at home looking after us, she helped out with the family business.

HighStreet Killers Swedes pay about 33% in income tax, more if you earn a lot. Plus, the money you pay in taxes comes back to you in the end. We have free health care, free universities, free school lunches, a much bigger social security net than America for example, and free dental care and medicine for children

480 days of parental leave in Sweden is about 1 year and 4 months (and that includes time that you take before child birth if it’s necessary). Each parent has the right to be off work for 18 months, without losing their jobs.
If they want they can save parental days, and use them until the child is 12 years old.

I'm on shared parental leave As a male in the uk (my wife is at work). Its great to be able to do this but we take a big hit on income. If you are unemployed on benefits or can afford it you get the chance to see your kids grow up. If your somewhere in the middle having to pay bills mortgage etc. You have to make some sacrifices to have the joy of of the early years
That is often a problem if the system is not built to make it possible for both parents to share the load. I am 60+ now and it was 30 years since I got my children in at that time it was the cut that they are toking about and as earned much more it was a hit...but we thought this was so important and I was home about 2-3 months per child and shared the load to be home when kids were sick....even though doe to job situation my wife took a larger share as I traveled a lot.
Since 20 years my company actually compensated over the breaking point so everyone has 85% regardless of salary to promote sharing. An honestly, it felt as natural for the men to be home when kids were sick and colleagues accepted it as natural if that is the mentality. That is a great thing...
Um, both of these sound fantastic from here in the US. I don't think we have mandated parental leave at all here. I work for myself so I'm not entirely sure, but every woman I know who works for a company got 4 or 6 weeks leave total.
the cost also gets reduced from 3 years and up i have two daughter 1 and 4 and they run about 2500 SEK a month which is roughly 200 GBP. in my municipality (this is not the case everywhere) diapers are included so you dont need to bring your own to the preschool. that alone easily makes up for half of the cost of preschool.
ive been home about 6 months with each daughter and mommy about a year. we still have well over 100 days of paid parental leave which we are also able to save up until the kids turn 12 to use for chistmas breaks, extended summer holiday etc.
you get 80% of your salary up to a roof of about 30.000 SEK a month, if you earn above that you dont get paid more, but even so. my last "paycheck" before i went back to work as a full time stay at home dad was about 24.000 SEK or roughly 2000 GBP which all comes from the goverment and not from my employer. however, many companies including mine also you give "parental salary" for 3-6 month. in my case 10% of my salary before tax for 6 months. so i recieved about 5000 SEK a month from my employer on top of the 24.000 SEK from the goverment which means that in total i was paid (after taxes) almost as much as my normal working salary would pay me.

You will not be kicked for having a baby, if that happens it's illegal. + in Sweden right now the people who get out of the work force (pensions) are the one of the biggest generations in Sweden so there will be a huge gap to fill, it's better to be away a few months to get a child so the economy wont crash when our biggest generation goes into pension.

You can't put it like that. That was the maximum tax rate. I live in Denmark, and it is similar to Sweden, though I think our taxes are higher. We pay 38%in tax up to 500.000 ddk. The ammout you earn after that you pay almost 60% tax off

I get six weeks of paid leave after I give birth... my husband has to use whatever vacation time to stay home for the first week of the child’s birth.. I get a whole 1 and a half month with my new born. I am American and I am a lucky to get six week paid leave, most get 8 unpaid.

I think in the UK we should start with giving men longer mandatory paternity leave so the stigma of a woman getting pregnant changes. From there we can make maternity leave longer. I still feel like there's a workplace bias against young women over the fear of them getting pregnant and having 39 weeks off work.
You are so right. Here in Sweden it is part of the government system and it is not the employer that has to administrate or pay. If I am not wrong the load to adminstate the pay is on employer...and that can complicate...
Try living in New Zealand. I only get 18 weeks paid and 6 months of work in total.

Watching this as an Indian a third world country where government does not care about their citizens as far as maternity leave goes women they do not get a paid maternity leave most women tend to quit their job it also depends on a type company's policies we pay around 30-35% of income tax and government does not use it properly instead it lines the pockets of the politicians BTW I work 11/10 hours a day . ( they have certain percentage of tax to be deducted for the amount of income you earn )

It’s shown that as quality of life and wealth increases, birth rate decreases. You need to develop your country and women will be too preoccupied with their careers to have more than 1-3 kids. In Europe it’s pretty uncommon to meet a family with more than 3 kids most have 2 (apart from Indians, Pakistanis or Somalis who will have around 7)

I believe the long working hours and less contact with the children is a contributing factor.

My experience having one child and heading back to work before my maternity leave was up I believe affected by child.
Leaving early for work and back by bedtime Mondays to Fridays.
So yes, the government should do more for working families.
How many people are hustling the system in the UK vs Sweden?
In Canada mothers get 12 months of paid maternity leave. Minimum 55% salary up to 100%. It all depends on the job. Mothers and fathers can share the first 35 weeks. unless they’re single dads or a dad in a same-sex relationship, dads cannot take the full 12 months. Only the mom can. Some provinces have 18 month maternity leave. I’m not entirely sure how that works. It’s not available to all mothers. I think it depends on the job??? As for childcare, it ranges from very affordable to very expensive. Depends on where you live. Quebec has the cheapest healthcare.

Nonsense. The nuclear family benefits the most from a successful child. Children historically have served as a retirement and care cushion in old age. Yes that child will pay taxes when older to reflect the investment society made in their success but that child will also give lavish gifts and money to their parents and siblings if they become successful. Modern parents want the long term investment benefits of a kid without bearing the burdens of maintaining a kid.
Sweden and the UK have a low fertility rate, so low that they wont be able to replace the older generation, and also why these governments are allowing millions of non-native Europeans into their countries.
The US does not have these childcare laws and we have an increasing positive feritility rate. Taxation is theft.

in romania, after you give birth, you stay at home for 2 years and you get 80% of your salary. then, you can work and for another year you get your salary plus those 80% of your salary. in the meantime, all medical supervision and drugs are free. it's true that we don't have big salaries and good hospitals, but still.. we own much of our houses (80%) , and daily living is pretty cheap. i personally own my own house and i'm debt free. and many of my freinds and family aee in the same situation.

Because I can tell you that though that might be true in that regard, America will find other ways to get you to pay more for example health insurance, American's don't even realise that they are being scammed in broad daylight by still having to pay for Medicare and Medishare but yet a lot don't benefit from it, there is also HOA fees, if you are a U.S. citizen and you live outside of the U.S. you still must pay and declare your income tax to uncle sam, also when buying and paying for things in America the price you see is not the full price, when you check it you always get another tax surprise! My husband has a high paying job and he pays around 55% in taxes but to say that we’re rich is an overstatement. Sweden is no Utopia. The inflated bank loan interest that we pay for our mortgage has really impacted our economy. Have you actually looked at the specifics of that policy? I'll take it you haven't. The system for applying is incredibly complicated and it requires that you reapply every 3 months. That's arduous and it's very easy to forget. It's also underfunded-the amount the government pays to nurseries is less than the actual cost of childcare. You may also notice that it's free childcare from the age of 3. You are expected to return to work after 39 weeks of maternity leave. That's a long time to pay for nursery, and not financially viable for many mothers. It's worth bearing in mind that care for babies is more expensive than for older children so it's even less affordable.

I'm British with some Swedish roots and I'm thinking about coming back to my homeland. 😉 The Swedish system is referred to as the Nordic model and I'm proud of my Nordic roots. Fairer societies. Sweden doesn't have a minimum wage by default because business are made to pay a working level wage. Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland are my favourite countries. Canada is a nice country, too.

A kid lasts 25-50 years these days. Income tax is for life. Even after retirement your interest gained on savings is taxable income. I choose freedom. I'd rather pay 30% for life instead of 60%. A fixed non negotiable cost basically functions like a tax. In the UK you can't not spend extortionate amounts of money on rent, transport or childcare. Most of our salaries are gobbled up by those three things. So would I rather have that money lining the pockets of private investors or, if I was in Sweden, paying the same amount in tax so that every citizen could live in housing worthy of the name and not be punished for having children (which is kind of important of you don't want major problems in the future when your tax base retires and there's nobody to replace them)? I think it's obvious. I'd rather be paying triple the amount of tax and have cheaper living costs. We are the country of Grenfell, nurses using foodbanks and women in comas being told they aren't entitled to financial help because they are healthy enough to work. But you know, other than that, the British model is doing great 🙄
