Nice tutorial vedio brought back my memory to the 1980s, when I used to write on cars and signs with paint, but I used to write on transperent paper first and pierced it with a needle and then dusted it with chalk powder. I Like this style of sign writing atractive and more durable. Thanks.
Love this style of REAL sign writing ... I'm retired and did gold leaf work and pin striping on boats in Michigan back in the 60's. After 9 years US Army I took a job teaching art in Australia as I have a fine art degree, teacher's certificate. Here in Oz I found the demand was for Prime movers and motorcycle. I learned about 48 years ago from DuPont chemist to use urethane hardner with "one shot" lettering enamel and then clear coated the work with DuPont "Emron" clear ... I had no idea back then, so when I did boats or motorcycles it was my secret as no one could bury the pinstripes under a clear coat. I found teaching students to look in front of the brush and not the actual paint work...spot on ... I always told my students you need to practice as it's all about muscle memory ...very nice post mate.
Excellent workmanship. I would have been inclined to do a pounce pattern though. This way you don't have to do 2 full layouts, plus it's nice to get everything spaced properly and dialed in before working on the vehicle. Why do it twice? Love the 2-tone shadows.
It quite literally took me less than 10 minutes to mark out BOTH sides. How long would it have taken to draw out and make a pounce pattern???...probably well over an hour and I reckon that even a "stolen valor signwriter" with a computer generated template couldn't even come close to that. I also had to take into consideration the geographical location of the vehicle, which involved a three hour round trip as it was, so a preliminary site visit to accurately measure the vehicle would have potentially doubled the travelling time/fuel etc. and effectively taken another working day out of my schedule. all this would have obviously incurred many extra costs which would have been unacceptable to the customer, but besides all that, if I couldn't do a simple job like that without a template, there wouldn't be much hope for me as a signwriter. P.S. The double shade is something that you don't see too often and whilst it doesn't neccessarily suit all applications, when used sparingly it can be an incredibly effective and relatively fast way of making something 'pop' without going down that whole "must use every colour in the spectrum/chisel faced/ bevelled edge/outlined/inlined/blended block shadow/cast shadow with extra drop shadow etc. etc. etc. circus cart route.
I just started hand lettering as a hobby. The tip that really made the light bulb go off for me was, every movement is in unison with every muscle, tendon, sinew from the finger to the shoulder.
is there something untraditional about using a mahl stick? i can letter without a mahl stick but it sure is faster and more comfortable to use a mahl stick
It's possibly just a personal thing...ie. I was trained (during my five year apprenticeship) to NOT rely on a mahl stick and whilst I do know that they have their place, I personally see them as, not only an unnecessary crutch, but also as a hinderance/obstruction. I hope to do a more in depth video on this subject in the near future, but basically, my left arm is my mahl stick.
Beautiful job! The lack of blocking out the letters was impressive. All that being said, I hope you went back to the passenger side and finished the Green shadow under the "D"!! I do signs and store fronts in vinyl and would love to do more hand paint lettering. Thanks so much for the video. It was greatly appreciated!
Well spotted...and I certainly did. One thing that was drummed into us as apprentices was that a one minute check round the job before heading home could prevent a potential two hour+ round trip, to add in ONE bit of shading .
really interesting how you used green against red which is often said to be a very jarring / unharmonious combination. Èm guessing because the green is so dark and even the red is a slightly darker than primary red, that the combo works ·?)---also you are correct as soon as the green goes on the red is pulled into the background ! Wow !
I'm sure we are all familiar with the old addage that "Red with Green should never be seen, exept for in the washing machine", but it's all to do with how it is used. Mid greens tend to clash with bright reds, but don't automatically rule out this combination as it definitely can be used to great effect. Darker reds can also work with lighter hues of green and an effect of great oppulance can be created with red with dark green. Every colour's visual perception will be influenced by its surroundings.
No, the customer only wanted a generic design on the sides in order to sell the vehicle, but similar wording on the rear plus a phone number on the driver & passenger doors would really sert it off.
great video thank you for taking the time to make it---very helpful!! If it is possible , may I ask a question: I notice you didnt use any sort of paint enhancer/flow enhancer /flow improver. Some other signwriters swear by it, using the Ålphanamel Flow Enhancer, or Owatrol Oil . Any advice on these ?
Can't say that I've ever needed to use any flow enhancers and I can think of very few occasions (eg. blending) where having paint dry slowly would be of any benefit. I have no experience with those products, so I couldn't comment on them.
It's not really important and real turps is not easy to get hold of, but when I can get hold if it, I prefer to use it for various reasons eg. white spirit/mineral spirit/turpentine substitute or whatever you want to call it is very inconsistent in quality and I personally find that paint flows better with real turps and seems to work better with red sable bristles...plus, of course; I love the smell of turpentine in the morning...smells like pine trees.
I still don’t get the “ magic dust” removal trick, wouldn’t you dirty up the paint, nevermind potentially scratching up the substrate paint ? Never the less, so far the best vid on the subject I have seen in a long time, and I certainly watched a lot of those. Great skill and understanding of it all, thx a bunch.
There's a wee knack to it which is difficult to explain, but basically the dust absorbs the paint whilst transferring it to the finger which is simultaneously flicked outwards and away from the substrate where it can be wiped clean. In over forty years, I have never known this method to cause any problems, even on fresh paintwork...you are more likely to cause damage with a rag, which can cause staining by rubbing the paint into the substrate. Even on the rare ocasinons that I would feel the need to use one of those rubber tipped thingies, I would always rub it lightly in some dust first. As long as there are no visibly large chunks of dirt in the dust you should be good.
Thanks, the video of one side of the vehicle is in real time, with only the various colour changes omitted, so the whole vehicle took approximately three & a half hours, with all processes being done consecutively on the same day.
While this is respectable sign writing, I would recommend for beginners to spend more time on layout. Better guidelines will help in knowing where your brush lands and not create spacing issues. Drawing two lines per stroke gives better guidance to knowing where the brush will go. Patterns might help.
BEING A DRAFTING TEACHER FOR 45 YEARS, I FEEL THE WORD "SALES" IS OUT OF SCALE TO THE WORD CAR AT THE START OF THE COMPANY NAME - LOOKS LIKE THOSE OLD JOKES ABOUT "PLAN AHEAD" WHERE YOU ARE TOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE AND YOU WRITE THE "EAD" DOWNWARDS

There’s no doubt about it, this is a dying art and soooo beautiful to watch. An absolute masterpiece. Thank you for sharing.
Wow, thats a phenomenal hand lettering job!
Thanks
Excellent sign painter & no stupid background music just pure craftsmanship & good commentary thanks
actually, there is background music.
...but it's exactly that, background music. It's not the main thing you're hearing.

Thank you for the comments and thanks also for sharing your experiences.
OMG that is stunning. You have to have nerves of steel!!!
Thanks, but not so much nerves of steel as the difference between a five day course and a five year apprenticeship.🖌
Awesome work ! I do it the exact same way.....except completely opposite ! 😃
Fantastic tutorial I'm inspired love to see some more
So impressive not many videos explaining the whole process and marketing out superb
Lots of great videos on YT but this is the one I needed 👊 Many of the videos don't explain how to 'hold the brush' etc
Thanks ✌
beautiful job , your blessed with talent
😮 Exelente señorita gracias
Really enjoyed watching this JohnBoy, thanks for sharing!
No probs mate...any questions, just gimme a shout.
Amazing work!!!
Excellent video. I liked the voiceover and the music!
Thanks...the video format is still a work in progress, so all feedback is much appreciated.
Excellent video! The naration was perfect. It was nice to hear the thought process.

It's hard to explain, but basically you need to train all of the senses to focus on the end result.
Very nice. 👍👍👍
Beautiful Work my friend!
Mesmerising

Fantastic
Outstanding
Bravo I used one shot lettering enamel grumbacher langnickel and Luco brushes
I haven't heard of those brushes, but I will definitely research them...thanks for the headsup.
Quality. Thank you.
Hi again John, what would you use to clean the van before painting if it had polish on it? I’ve had bad results with acetone etc. thanks 🙏
Panel wipe would be best...it's non aggresive, evaporates quickly and doesn't leave a residue.

PS. Kudos for actually having watched AND payed attention up to and including that part✅
I guess the contact Telephone No & email were added to round it all off, a most Excellent instructional video. Thankyou.
...and don't forget the Fax No.😉
I just clicked on the image to pause it for a moment...I moved the cursor so as to not smudge the paint. I really need to get out more.
Looks great to me
Was the front and rear of the van painted also ?
No, the customer only wanted a generic design on the sides in order to sell the vehicle, but similar wording on the rear plus a phone number on the driver & passenger doors would really sert it off.
I think I have found vlog gold, just to ask are the paints one shot ?
Alpha 6 Alphanamel.

You put Turps only once during your entire lettering works?

@@titanic-town-sign-school A mystery to me, maybe I ll understand it one of these days. Thx
very good video well done i thought the womens voice was easy to listen to
Thanks, it would be a lot easier to just record the commentary with my own voice, but I doubt if my accent would be too easy on the ears😂
Well damn I would have liked to have heard what you were saying
Beautiful work John, how long did it all take? Looking forward to more videos 🙏
Thanks, the video of one side of the vehicle is in real time, with only the various colour changes omitted, so the whole vehicle took approximately three & a half hours, with all processes being done consecutively on the same day.
Yes, absolutely beautiful work John. I had to use a palette and mahl stick for my work. Love the videos. 👍
We used Oleum
The voice is annoying. But such a great video. I don’t blame you I hate talking in them too. Thanxx for sharing.

Why in caps
The robot voice is such a shame! Couldnt stand to watch more than a couple of mins
I couldn’t hang more than two minutes with the chick’s voice and dramatic sound effects.
@@titanic-town-sign-school her voice is great, so is the music.
Your loss then
This guy thinks pretty highly of himself lol... Hard watch. I prefer to learn from those who are humble!
MASTERPIECE 🤌🎨
