Wow this is just packed with information! I've watched so many tutorials and never seen the little bit of tape on the end of the brush - that was so helpful!
I don’t normally leave comments but for this video I had to. The best video by far for beginners, extremely helpful and so relaxing. You manage to inspire confidence before I even begin, I look forward to starting a new road of learning, thankyou.
Magic video👍 I was signwriting Aberdeen FC advertising boards in the early 80s and learning the skills then vinyl lettering came in and work dried up and apprenticeship ended but now considering getting the brushes out again
My dad and my uncle were Signwriters. Back then, it was a trade like plasterer or a mechanic. Today there are far less of them and they're all tattoos, beards and woolly hats. Good to see it living on.
Sir, Thankyou for a great video. As a stained glass artist I hate painting letters but with your video there might be hope. It's nice to be talked to and not down to. The entire internet could learn from you. Your video seemed like 5 minutes, I'm looking forward to more.
What a fantatsic tutorial. I have been watching sign painting video's all week, i am so glad i watched this one. I might have a go, seems quite tricky though.
I love the video, thank you! Is there a reason why you choose different widths for each letter: 8cm, 6.5cm, 6cm, etc. Was this for demonstration purposes or do you have the widths of every letter that you think works best, A to Z?
Beautiful stuff and very informative. I picked up sign painting over the holiday (I'll be the 4th generation in my family to do it) but unfortunately due to COVID I haven't been able to get many in-person lessons. I wish I had found this video when it first came out because it took me ~4 months to figure out on my own what you so quickly, accurately, and easily explain here. What do you think about those Kafka Kwills? On a side note: don't give up on RUclips. It really does take a while to get things rolling. I have a channel of my own under a different account and it took me 2 years before I was getting significant reviews and subscriptions. If you need or want any advice/help with your channel, just let me know. Would be glad to assist! Cheers
Hi Cody - we were learning in person but unfortunately due to COVID all sessions we're suspended. But, we were lucky enough to work with Ciaran who made this brilliant and ever so generous video so our community could carry on learning but also we're delighted as even more people can benefit and start learning via the video and internet. Bonus is we have it forever now! Thank you for the feedback and we're really glad you found it so useful and informative. We particularly love how fun it is also. We'll ask Ciaran what he thinks of Kafka Kwills - not used them myself. Thank for the RUclips encouragement - it's a new platform for us. If you have any tips please share with hello@creativewestend.net Thanks so much! And happy signpainting!
Hi, I haven't checked out your other videos yet but I hope you will mention the importance of letters like O, C, G and S that have to be painted so that they go above the cap height and below the base line to look optically correct. Just saying :)
for the part you are breaking down the freehand letters in three colors. do you have three diff paint brushes? or are you cleaning the brush and applying diff color paint everytime?
Brilliant video, thank you! Shame I didn't see it before I had to paint a sign for someone, but it will definitely be useful for next time (if anyone ever asks me again)
Hi, are you using a Pro Arte Prolene series 10 brush? What number or size is the brush? I enjoyed the lesson, the tape on the brush handle illustrates the action very well. Regards Ralph.
Looks like the Handover 333 I find these work well on real slick surfaces with slightly thicker paint (this is relative) but maybe it’s because at the time it was the right size brush for the job. The brush had a great drag . Great video, havin a sudden craving for some Hamish Imlach .
Sometimes when you're concentrating on lettering you misspell. I've done that and it's really annoying. Check your spelling as you letter. Simple but really true.
Your technique is amazing. Your tattooed hands are a gross distraction. I'm sorry. I mean no offense. To me, your hands and their ability are sacred. Why junk them up with a bunch of prison tattoos...?
Probably the best sign painting video on youtube, more like this would be great 👍
Love it. I'm a traditional signwriter from South Africa. Started my apprenticeship in 1976. I truly enjoyed watching you.
Please make more sign painting videos. This was excellent. My favorite instructional sign lettering video so far! ❤
Thanks for taking the time. Greatly appreciated! Hope you're doing all right.

Love your sense of humour. Excellent lesson. Thank you so much. Haven't done this in years, I need to get back and practice.

Excellent instruction. I've done some sign painting and fine art painting but learning a bit more is always worthwhile.
Thank you.

i came here for the sign painting, stayed for the ventriloquist act
Hello nice where can I find these brushes
What is the name of the brushes you using
Great Ciaran, but your proportions aren’t clear?!
Looks like the Handover 333

Might i ask how usual it is for you watching folks from all over to actually handdraw grotesk fonts?
BEAUTIFUL at the very end. Did you handdraw the outlines before?
AND: Yes :D!!!
Freehand technique is really SCARY ----takes years of practise !!!
Practice spelled wrong
BEGINNERS ??? you are kidding surely ?
Your technique is amazing. Your tattooed hands are a gross distraction.
I'm sorry. I mean no offense. To me, your hands and their ability are sacred. Why junk them up with a bunch of prison tattoos...?
Ty for this
Thank you.
