I was married in 1951 and I got the cookbook at my shower. Needless to say, my cookbook is falling apart after 68 years. Have to admit I really haven’t used it much in past years. So enjoyed watching you cook out of it. Look forward to your videos. Thank you for sharing..
I really would love, love, love for you to make some vintage school cafeteria recipes. Specifically, cheese zombies and tomato soup 🍲 and peanut butter chocolate bars for dessert. This vintage cooking reminded me of the real food we used to get served when I was in elementary school.
JEN, (DON'T KNOW IF YOU'LL GET TO READ THIS (HOPE SO ) & REBECCA, Your so LUCKY TO HAVE YOUR GRANDMA'S OLD COOKBOOKS !!!!! GREAT MEMORIES !!!!!!!!!!! YOUR PROBABLY TOO YOUNG TO REMEMBER ANY OF THIS, BUT LIKE I SAID. BROUGHT BACK GREAT MEMORIES, SO THANK YOU !!!!!
Omg I loved that Kraft spaghetti kit when I was like 12... I remember making it with my best friend after school all the tome..I will have to try this spaghetti recipe. I just can’t imagine cooking all these things in a day..kudos to the housewives back then..I really enjoyed your vintage cooking day..can’t wait to see more.
Jen you look absolutely beautiful! Love your outfit your hair makeup. So so pretty. This video took me back a long ways. Thank you for helping me remember some sweet memories. Things seemed so much simpler then. Have a wonderful day. Love and blessings....
Dang girl....I'd be lucky if I could make one of those recipe's in a day, let alone even two full meals. I remember my mom seemed to always be in the kitchen when I was a kid. You put things into perspective . Makes me appreciate all the hard work she put in for the family.
Love watching you cook those 50's recipes. My mom was married in 1953. I inherited her cookbook collection and this Better Homes and Garden cookbook was included.
I was raised by a stay at home mom as a child during the 50s. Mom was a fabulous Hungarian cook and never made three big meals a day. Nor did she wear dresses or skirts routinely. I think we have idealized those times a lot. Great childhood but most moms were raising several kids and keeping houses without lots of modern day conveniences. We had cereal for breakfast most mornings. ;-)
Yeah, my mom was really a bad cook. Seriously. My dad was fantastic. We were pretty much on our own in the mornings. For lunch to take to school she made up a bunch of bologna sandwiches on Sunday and froze them. I hate mayonnaise, my sister hated mustard (elementary school) she would always mess up the sandwiches. Many a day I went without lunch.
Me too almost everybody was a stay at home mom, on my street we had one couple at the start of the street and next to them was the mother of a little girl who had polio at age 3 and her mother worked and her dad stayed home and drank all of the time. And everybody else was daddy’s working and mommy’s staying home.
@@rhiahlMT My mom wasn’t much of a cook either and I got bologna sandwiches with horseradish mustard and 4 hamburger dill slices on white bread, nothing worse than room temperature bologna except on Friday’s I got 1 slice of American cheese on white bread and it would kind of melt. Some plain potato chips,4 store bought cookies and sour milk that the school gave us. I rarely ate either. It was a bowl of cereal for breakfast.
@@patsmith5947 In the Army you were required to eat in basic training. Food wasn't the best, but edible. In my training school, you had the option of eating there or not. Maybe I would every day or two. At permanent station, the food were I was billeted, was a health hazard. I think in over 2 years I went in there twice. There was a mess hall where I worked. Amazing food there. One meal a day. So, when I had 2 - 3 days off, I rarely ate unless friends went out together to a restaurant. I maintained 94 lbs until I married my second husband. His family ate all the time. It was practically a crime to miss a meal. A pregnancy at 42 and 3 meals a day, I was up to 174 when I was diagnosed with diabetes. My husband has passed away, my kids are grown. I went back to the way I used to eat. Off diabetes med, down to 132lbs and still losing. For many, the diagnosis is devastating. To me, with decent health, it was a blessing in disguise.
These videos are so fun. That lunch was intense! And I can't help but think of women making it without a stand mixer back in the day. Seems like you'd be spending all day cooking. And I love all the interesting salad dressings you've made too. I need to do that more.
I am always happy that you actually rinse your lettuce when some don't. I was so disappointed when the Pioneer Woman took a head of lettuce directly from package and quartered for wedge salads without washing, lol. Great post 😊.
How fun, please consider doing a series of these! I have a weakness for Better Homes & Gardens cookbooks (and vintage Pyrex) and have one from each decade. I find it so interesting how the recipes change through the years (to include the look of the cookbooks). Lots of great recipes and interesting stuff especially in the ones around WWII due to rationing of ingredients. If anyone spots one at Goodwill consider picking it up, the best ones to find are the ones that are well used with handwritten notes in them!
Before my son went to culinary school, he actually cooked that Kraft boxed spaghetti all the time. I love your cooking segments Thank you and God bless.
Fun video! You look so beautiful in the beginning. I wanted to explain what grape butter is. It’s when you take a bunch of grapes and let them cook slow for a long time until they reach the consistency of a thick applesauce. You may have to use your immersion blender to help blend the grapes. I’ve never done grape butter before. Some people add sugar at the beginning of the cooking process too - depending on the sweetness of the fruit. You end up with a sweet spread to spread on your toast, etc. I’ve made peach butter, pear butter, and apple butter. I use my crock pot and let it cook for hours. It’s so delicious. The only reason it’s called butter is because you spread it like you would butter. 🍇🍞
Oh what fun! Your hair looks gorgeous all soft and curly - I hope you'll keep doing these vintage cooking videos, I love cooking and will definitely try some of these recipes.
I think I'm going to use that tartlet recipe as a portion-controlled apple and pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving. Thanks Jen and I am a stay-at-home mom and I don't have time to make all that from scratch every damn day
I’m really sorry you aren’t feeling well, but I enjoyed this retro recipe video so much, and am inspired to take a crack at my first ever soufflé from the old Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook that I inherited from my Mom. Take care of yourself!!

I always laugh at old tv show like Leave it to Beaver where June is perfectly dressed ( and yep with her pearls) cooking away...I try to cook things early on holidays that allows me time to change quickly into my nice clothes before guests arrive.
Yummy!! I remember having ambrosia salad at both of my grandparents homes...ahh the memories 💖 I'm making Swiss steak this weekend (inspiration from your last vintage meal video), please keep these up because if you enjoy doing them, I enjoy watching and recreating them! 😍😁💖

I’m sorta shocked at how relatable these recipes are. And no jello or mayonnaise!!! The dressings seem yummy too and I for sure am tempted to make the cheese soufflé!

Just a tip...open both ends of the tomato paste and the contents come out easy with a quick shake. Fun video. I remember that cookbook growing up. My mom had it. Wonder if it’s still around somewhere 🤔
Btw the cheese souffle looked amazing n delicious, what an accomplishment for u, I've never made one , in fact I always thought they were hard to make . U should be so proud u did it!!! This was so much fun glad u did this....🐱

I am going to have to go and get my cookbook my aunt gave me that cookbook years ago for me to use so I'm going to have to get it back out and go through it cuz some of that stuff you cook looks so delicious the egg omelet the spaghetti and stuff all of that looks so delicious oh yes in the cheese souffle I haven't had that in years I remember going with my aunt to some of her caterings when I was younger and she had made one but that's been years ago it looked it's so easy the way you did it I'm going to make one thank you for sharing thank you for giving us things to think about to cook
By the time 1950’s housewives were finished cleaning up from one meal, it would be time to start preparing the next meal... how did they find time to do the rest of the housework?!
I can remember my mother cooking all day every day--it was one of her few creative outlets. She practiced all kinds of things on us at lunch time until she got good enough to serve them for dinner. Like her souffles--we ate more than a few duds for a while. I remember with souffles we had to take out shoes off to walk around the house so the souffle didn't fall. And don't get me started on her desserts!!
fun fun fun!!! I love looking through really old cookbooks and seeing if I can recreate some of the recipes. but I draw the line at some of the game recipes! I am not cooking squirrel! thanks for the video I loved it!
Loved this Jen! I think you should do a series on vintage meals! Lol They do seem very easy too! Definitelywill try a few like the omelet. I tend to over think it really. Yours was nice and big for 2 eggs! Going to try the marinara sauce too with from scratch meatballs. I am getting my feet wet when it comes to the from scratch cooking. Im going to attempt those scalloped potatoesfor thanks giving. Oh...also if you have holliday meal ideas too. Im doing a pork roast for thanksgiving with apples and onion, maybe butternut squash too. I was going to bag it up like a turkey and let it cook. I thank you for really showing us all your prep with cooking and just prep work. Im the cooker in the family and,I am finding my cooking coincidence! Lol 💖💖💖
Love the vintage cooking! Your outfit was super cute! And wow! That’s a soufflé!! I’ve never made one before but I’m inspired to try! (I don’t have a soufflé dish either.)
I was married in 1951 and I got the cookbook at my shower. Needless to say, my cookbook is falling apart after 68 years. Have to admit I really haven’t used it much in past years. So enjoyed watching you cook out of it. Look forward to your videos. Thank you for sharing..

By the time 1950’s housewives were finished cleaning up from one meal, it would be time to start preparing the next meal... how did they find time to do the rest of the housework?!
Right!!!
The cleaning/laundry days were the soup days at my granny's home.
Love this! and you look gorgeous!
Jenn, girl you look so beautiful! Such a fun video idea!

This was so great!! Love this video series idea, thank you, very cool & inspiring ☮️💟🙏🏻
fun fun fun!!! I love looking through really old cookbooks and seeing if I can recreate some of the recipes. but I draw the line at some of the game recipes! I am not cooking squirrel! thanks for the video I loved it!
Loved this Jen! I think you should do a series on vintage meals! Lol
They do seem very easy too!
Lol
💖💖💖
Hope you feel better soon. Really enjoyed this video.
Love the vintage cooking! Your outfit was super cute! And wow! That’s a soufflé!! I’ve never made one before but I’m inspired to try! (I don’t have a soufflé dish either.)
