Not just you. I’ve been using Reason for more than 20 years. There are many reasons to switch to CTRL out. Two key ones are automation on the Master fader, and, especially, monitoring the send returns. I can also turn down if I’m using monitors late at night without touching the automated fader

It’s not wrong it’s just an additional option. If you want to turn your mix up or down use your speakers volume control if it has one or a volume knob on your interfaces monitoring output. Do not use the master fader to pull it down unless you’re automating fade in or out. They provide the control room out which has an attenuator that does not affect the master fader (which you mention in the video).
It’s funny because I still see so many Reason Users pulling the master fader down though 😅 Whatever is comfortable I suppose it’s cool to experiment 😊😊
@@MrMarcLaflamme I think the idea is using it rather than the master out to increase your volume during the mix session without increasing the actual projects volume, thereby giving you the “ what if we played this as loud as possible” without screwing up your mix. It doesn’t make your mix or Eq better, it just helps you to monitor your music better. As Colt capperune says, “as soon as you start a mix session you begin to lose perspective on your mix” Hopefully this monitoring system saves time and thereby saving perspective.
@@Chrisreedbeats your audio interface or speakers or operating system have volume controls, use them, it’s the same thing. Then you don’t have to recable anything.

I've been up on this for awhile now with the Ctrl room routing but good vid bro, keep'em coming. You're bubbling right now but I got a feeling your channel's gonna blow up at some point.
This is exactly how a real console works. You have a control room output which feeds the monitors and its output doesn't effect your masterbus processing. This is also a good way to listen to any send and return in isolation so you could maybe dial in a effect or if there is an issue with a send being too hot and many other benefits. But using the control room out the same exact workflow you would find on any studio analog console. So this is a good habit to learn if you ever want to work in a commercial studio since if you route your audio to the master bus on a patchbay no sound will come from the monitors since your masterbus is routed separately.
There's no wrong use, that's just a convenience option, stock computer sound cards, usually don't come with a physical volume knob.. so this functionality could help with that...
There is nothing wrong with using the master output; adjusting the master fader because the monitoring levels are too high or too low is a beginners mistake, you should be adjusting the levels at the monitoring system anyways… it should be common sense. The use case for the control room output is if adjusting the physical monitoring system is impractical/inaccessible/etc
Great video. I love technical demos/ discussions. I learned this years ago because I did take time to read the manual and watch all old instructional vids from Reason(when they were called Propellerhead studios). Can't wait to watch the others :)

Well yes and no. Most times your pc master volume will max out and not push your music beyond a certain level. With the control room out you can push the full volume of the track even further for playback purposes.
In reality, there's no right or wrong , there's only creative way to do things :) Whatever sounds and feels best for the creator, - who cares how it's done ?
Sure, I agree with you. Reason is the kind of program that "how it's done" is the most intriguing and special part :-) There are so many patching and cabling options and it's just that extra layer of functionality that makes it extraordinary.
@@Chrisreedbeats the Reason channel has a video about it, but I can't post a link in comments. It's called "Advanced Mastering - Focusing the Master Bus Compressor" You simply cable the control room out to a filter and remove the frequencies you want the master bus compressor to ignore. Route this filter to the master bus side chain input and ensure the Key button is enabled. That should do the trick. This technique is normally used to remove low frequencies.
Looks like you still got it “wrong” since the user guide says to connect the control room output to SEPARATE outputs on the Hardware Interface, not to the MAIN outputs as you have done in this video. However, if your interface only has two outputs you don’t have a choice, but your interface already has a volume control so in this case you don’t need the CR outputs! Also, yea you have 6 dB gain but as poohbear points out you DON”T have any additional headroom so it’s likely you’ll simply clip if you turn up the CR out above 0 dBFS.
😅😅😅 I thought I mentioned that in the video. I have the scarlet 2i2 so I only have the 2 main outputs. Others may have more outputs, like the 4i4 or others. Heck even the Rodecaster Pro 2 has multiple outputs. Still trynna get my hand on one of those. Thanks for watching!
There’s no right or wrong but this is based on the big desks we used to use in the 80s and 90s at EMI studios, the Neves, SSLs (on which the Reason mixer is loosely based), Sony Oxfords etc. It’s a very handy feature if you have a separate studio and control room and particularly if you’re likely to have multiple musicians listening to different mixes but wanted to have a baseline, being what is listened to in the control room. It was unheard of to mix as you were recording, specifically because automation of the mix was a clunky and complex thing, even on these state of the art consoles. The Neve automation used a 3.5inch floppy to store its data on, and the SSL used 8 inch floppies! With everything being hardware and automaton being synchronised to tape using SMPTE timecode, a mix was not something you could switch in and out of. So after the recording part, we’d make what was called a monitor mix, using what was coming out of these control room outputs as something to listen to on your car cassette player. The main mix out was often only used in the mixing sessions. We have so much flexibility these days and the level of technology is so much more democratic but sometimes it’s good to create workflow limitations to mimic the old days just to get the same vibe. Sometimes having no limits can be overwhelming to the creative process.
Really helpful, thank you - Reason Studios wouldn't default with a "wrong" configuration though. The "reason" Master is wired up is that many of us have studio monitors with either volume controls or a hardware mixer (for control room) that we can adjust without affecting the Master. Keep making helpful videos!
There is one big reason to why the Master Outs are wired to the audio outs as default, Channels 1 and 2 on the Audio Output is what is rendered on export, so if you wire up your Control Room out that is what will be rendered and not from the Master out. Control Room Level, this will attenuate or boost the signal, this means you can push the signal above 0db and even in the video you could hear it totally distort. Make good use of your Volume level on your external hardware amp\device. The Control Room out is handy for monitoring the Sends and Returns as you can do that separately and for my personal setup I use the Control Room out for my monitoring chain.
Yes, that’s a very important point about rewiring control room to ch1&2! I always have my master wired to 1&2 and control the monitor level from my audio interface instead, so that the master out is always unaffected by my monitor levels.
I don’t have any amps to boost sound so this helps me 🤷🏾♂️. Plus when I’m on my laptop the extra dbs really come in handy. I think the Scarlett is cool but I always end up cranking the headphone volume to the max. I have decent headphones as well but idk just need a bit more volume sometimes. I’m learning a lot from all the comments though please keep going. And thanks for watching and contributing means a lot 😁
@@Chrisreedbeats Having to crank the headphone output on your Scarlett is probably more to do with what Ohms your headphones are. I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990Pro 250 Ohm and I have to crank the volume much higher than on my AudioTechnica ATH-M50X which I believe are only 80 Ohms - I have the same interface as you.

@@Chrisreedbeats the Audio-Technicas sound good at lower volumes as their impedance is only 38 Ohms apparently. So the lower the impedance the less you have to drive them. Plus they are a closed back headphones so block out outside noise. Unlike my dt-990 which are open back. On the Scarlett, the headphone knob I usually have between 9 o’clock & 11 o’clock position with the ATs and between 1 o’clock and 3 o’clock with the DT990s
Also keep in mind bro, it says "use control room out for monitoring. so you wont affect the master output signal". So we have to reroute the master out cables back to the big meter to get the correct signal to the exported file. Control room out is just like a interface so to say but for the engineers.
If you have an external volume knob though...it doesn't matter. In 5 years, I think I've touched the Master Fader all of once. Unless you've got a big console in front of you that you need to go to 2 different pairs of monitors, or a headphone amp...it really doesn't matter.

Not wrong, just a matter of your own workflow. I've used separate monitoring busses or not in Reason and in other DAWs for yonks and either configuration works perfectly well for anything I'm doing. It's always nice to have the option though. e.g. for headphones. +1 for RTFM, I always tell people to do that, and they never listen 🙂 The Reason manual is one of the the better manuals out there, not quite as good as the Ableton manual but close.

when i use a redrum, how do i make each of the 10 drums go to different faders on the white colored mixer? (not the dark gray one) if i put 10 drums in a redrum it all goes to one fader on the mixer & i hate that, so I always make a new redrum for EACH DRUM (crazy inefficient for your CPU) & i've been doing that for 20 years (lol) is there a quick & easy way to make each drum go to a different fader, so I don't have to make a new redrum for each drum I put in the beat?
In Windows 10 there is a Screan recoreder and records the Screan and Audio from the selected program window, it does not capture the entire screen and also does not capture VSTs. This has its advantages and disadvantages but the audio capture is the audio you hear while recording.
When I do this, as I wanted to use restream to see how it works :) the plugin doesn't register the sound in OBS but does in Reason. any idea what I am doing wrong, it works in Ableton though. Thanks
I want to mention one more important use case for the control room out: If you already have some instrumental tracks in Reason and want to record live vocals to them. Often the singer wants to hear her voice louder and the instrumental tracks quieter in her headphones. If you use an audio interface like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 she can direct monitor her voice. If she now says: Please make the playback quieter, you simply can turn down the control room out volume without affecting the master bus.
I have done this and it is great. However when you export the song, your VU meter won't match. The track will be too quiet. That was what I experienced.
So if you are to leave the Master bus in terms of input channeling, why is there a pair of jack ports on them? Genuine question! Just wanna know what its purpose is…..
I still don't get why you would need the control room out. If you want to listen to your music louder you can just turn up your mixer/amp. This would only make sense if you have a device without the ablility to control your output externally.
Reasons is the closest thing to working in a studio environment. Reasons is a engineers software, and rack gear enthusiast. Works perfect with any outboard MIDI gear and hard disk recorders. If you trying to work like your in a studio environment this is the software to use.
Yea thats a whole bunch of extra bs, they make volume knobs on your speakers or interface for a reason (no pun intended) one of the things that irritate me with this daw🤣let's create a whole bunch of extra steps for very simple things
I switch to CTRL out every time I start a project. I send the master outs to an EQ, and route it back to the Master side chain and roll off the bass to the compressor.
That’s a cool option, but would it not be the same if we created a couple buses and routed them to our master? Not trying to be smart, truly curious. Or would we lose certain options by not using the control room?
I’ve got a midi controller knob permanently assigned to the control room knob for adjusting monitor level without needing the mouse. In a studio with a large format console you would definitely see a monitor level knob somewhere, easy to reach in the master section.
That's a good tip! I need another midi controller with more surface controls, My 88 keyboard doesn't have many and the ones it does will not work correctly with Reason.
This control room out is added to the real SSL because in big studios you dont want to walk up to your interfaces all the time. For a project studio this can just act as an additional output of everything basically
Oh man I think this might really confuse people so I am going to make it as simple as possible. NO, if you have a modern audio interface you have not been using Reason wrong this entire time, and that manual info is probably from 2 decades ago. In the most simple terms: Mix out is the level of the actual mix, which is what it defaults to monitoring to. Ctrl out is the equivalent of control room output on an analog mixer (Reason really tries to copy the analog paradigm) which is simply the MONITORING level being sent to your speakers. BUT, any modern audio interface has its own monitoring knob, therefore making this entire video a bit of noob panic inducing for nothing. Of course I keep reason's output as it is, the mix output, and I monitor the level to my speakers using the monitor dial (which is a lot more pleasant to use than a mouse) on my interface. Even if you are using a laptop with windows in built audio, you can use windows volume as your "ctrl room out" and still use Reason at the default settings. I have 4 finger up and down on trackpad as windows volume control, very easy to do and works perfectly and is actually very responsive. Now that I have bought an interface for my laptop as well when I am in a music mood when in bed, I have bought a little portable arturia minifuse 2 interface which works brilliantly with Reason and has, you guessed it, a big, tactile monitoring knob on it (i.e. its own control room function). If for some reason (no pun intended) you want to use Reason's digital control room knob to control the level of your monitoring, then sure, follow the video. For everyone else, please don't worry about it.
I think you missed the part where some people want to hear the music louder than the mix out is providing with out clipping or overdriving the master volume. Even with an interface, and even with using Windows audio to control volume, Reason Control Room out will give you even more volume along with those options, while not changing your actual master out. It’s monitoring right? I think I mentioned headphone amps and other gain increasing technology for those that really want to crank the volume. @@Chrisreedbeats I tested it, I have no idea what you are on about. The volume is identical to my interface when cranked or reason ctrl room when cranked. I missed nothing - it's monitoring level, nothing more. That's what a control room out is. You're trying to play semantics now because the whole video is ridiculous with a sensationalist title and you've been called out on it. Do you have any experience at all with real mixers with ctrl room out? Or interfaces with separate monitor control sections or monitor stations made for this specific feature? Edit, I see, you are talking about the extra 6db control room can give you on top of your monitoring already being cranked to 11. I actually don't recommend it, but, as with everything, YMMV. I am in my bedroom right now using a little gen 1 IK Multimedia iLoud and it gets to deafening volumes with just the arturia minifuse monitor out pumped up and reason ctrl room at unity gain. I couldn't bear the thought of using another 6db on top. It will just distort the speaker anyway if I try pump those extra 6db on top. So that's a basic single speaker, anyone with actual dual monitors with way more power than that, who want to keep their hearing, might not worry about the 6DB, and of course there ARE those that may want to use a mouse and digital knob to control monitoring level, in that case, yes, the reason ctrl room is the correct reason mixer output to use to your audio card out.
@@Chrisreedbeats Let me give you another example of how it works in the real world and how any pro engineer does it if they happen to be using an analog desk. 1) If they are simply plugging their studio monitors directly into the desk and monitoring from there, they will plug them into the control room out and use that for gain monitoring. Exactly like what you are doing with Reason 2)If they have multiple sets of monitors, and/or using a monitoring station rather than the desk, they will take the MIX out into the monitoring station. That's just the way it is. Reason was made as a totally ITB "you can do it on a laptop and a mouse" production system 20 years back when that manual was written. No one uses an audio interface without a proper monitor section in 2024. All that said, IF you are using internal PC audio out, it can be a bit soft vs a good interface, so I can agree with you that the bit of extra gain from the reason ctrl room could help there in that ONE and ONLY scenario and could be used as an alternative to Windows's level mixer.

I talk about what is in the title and thumbnail, I discuss with some detail and overall it is posed as a question; I even specifically ask viewers to answer the question. I have no problem being unaware of something or learning something new. This video is a good example of that. I saw something one day while creating and went to read up on it and I did my “RUclips” thing. It’s what got you here giving me all this great engagement. This video is my genuine reaction to learning of this feature as it was INTENDED via the manual to be used. This is the reason the video is titled the way it is. To sumarised ,master bus is what you actualy print on export, ctrl room is for the monitor speaker and your hearing confort. Usualy a mastering engineering people, always ask for minus 12 dbfs,on the master bus without the bus compressor rack to have headroom to use hardware or software one on there final step , by the way, youtube always apply a limiting of -1.00 dbfs for any video, but yeah the control room help improving the mix before limiting or maximize any sound output.
Happily I’ve been using these outputs correctly because I read through the manual at the beginning, reading manuals can be boring and tedious but it’s really worth it. Learning from RUclips tutorials and reviews can be useful too but you can also pick up someone else’s bad habits.
personally I always have the default master out to inputs 1&2 my desk has loads of gain for control room , I don't believe this effects quality as long as you gain stage correctly, as mentioned by another comment it's a good tool to use as a side chain compressor with a cut off filter but I generally have no use for it 👊
For anyone who's ever worked in a real studio this is very obvious as its how a real mixer works. You should read the manual on the whole mixer, its very complex but much more like a real console than any of the other DAWs virtual mixing screens. I suggest you sidechain the bus compressor with a filter so it works better on bass heavy signals, another real-world trick you can do with Reason.

Yeah fk all that, when is Reason going to give us more than one MIDI out port to send MIDI clock out to hardware..? it's insane we can only route MIDI clock to one MIDI out port, every other DAW you can send clock to multiple MIDI outs at same time.
I also realised that, in the master section, I should be using the input knobs to mix, rather than the volume faders. Those apparently are for automation and sound design stuff.
Not exactly. You want to use the input knobs for gain staging, but still use the volume faders for mixing. The reason is because the input knobs control the signal strength of the incoming signal, and then any processing you want is applied to it. Then, the volume faders control the volume AFTER the processing takes place. If you have a part that you don't want to be very loud, but you still want to have effects on it, it is better to apply the effects to the strong signal and then turn it down. Many effects are optimized for strong input signals.

PRO TIP: what you should be doing is using your control room out and putting it into an eq and then feeding that into your master sidechain comp and then taking the bass out of the eq and then when you use your master comp it will only compress above what you took out of the control ouput therefor you won't use your master comp on the bass and be over compressing. theres is normally a hp option on the real SSL master compressor but since this doesn't have one this is super necessary to get the best out of your mix.

Hello there!! Chris here! Well, if you read the language in the manual, it is not presented as an OPTION. It is presented as the standard. That’s why I ask the question. I agree in practice everyone’s setup can be different and work just fine but according to the manual its a different story.

Just keep in my that it’s a monitor and not the actually sound of your project at that point. Hmm can we use this control out to mix in mono? Or even isolate the mid range and use it to mix mid frequencies only?
@@Chrisreedbeats I thought I'd ask cause my hearing is not as normal as many talented music producers out there. In fact I was born with hear loss to both of my ears. I do wear hearing aids for my hearing loss but when I wear headphones I take them off. If I put my headphones on with hearing aids on my ears then my hearing aids will get feedback noise and that hurts my ears.

So in This Case the master Out and Control room Just is Not making Sense
If Theres a Switch you can use to Playback the master of Control room then your able to easily compare your Mix with your master both routed in the Studio Monitors Output of the audio Interface
This will make Sense to listen to a clean Signal and mastered Signal with pressing one knob
It’s not wrong it’s just an additional option. If you want to turn your mix up or down use your speakers volume control if it has one or a volume knob on your interfaces monitoring output. Do not use the master fader to pull it down unless you’re automating fade in or out. They provide the control room out which has an attenuator that does not affect the master fader (which you mention in the video).

This output has no affect on mixing or eq’ing. It’s a duplicate output with a dedicated volume control.

@@MrMarcLaflamme I think the idea is using it rather than the master out to increase your volume during the mix session without increasing the actual projects volume, thereby giving you the “ what if we played this as loud as possible” without screwing up your mix.
It doesn’t make your mix or Eq better, it just helps you to monitor your music better. As Colt capperune says, “as soon as you start a mix session you begin to lose perspective on your mix” Hopefully this monitoring system saves time and thereby saving perspective.

This is exactly how a real console works. You have a control room output which feeds the monitors and its output doesn't effect your masterbus processing. This is also a good way to listen to any send and return in isolation so you could maybe dial in a effect or if there is an issue with a send being too hot and many other benefits. But using the control room out the same exact workflow you would find on any studio analog console. So this is a good habit to learn if you ever want to work in a commercial studio since if you route your audio to the master bus on a patchbay no sound will come from the monitors since your masterbus is routed separately.

There's no wrong use, that's just a convenience option, stock computer sound cards, usually don't come with a physical volume knob.. so this functionality could help with that...

There is nothing wrong with using the master output; adjusting the master fader because the monitoring levels are too high or too low is a beginners mistake, you should be adjusting the levels at the monitoring system anyways… it should be common sense. The use case for the control room output is if adjusting the physical monitoring system is impractical/inaccessible/etc

I just use my PC's "master" volume. I guess this would be useful in a more complex setup or if your monitors are ridiculously low in volume?
Well yes and no. Most times your pc master volume will max out and not push your music beyond a certain level. With the control room out you can push the full volume of the track even further for playback purposes.

Sure, I agree with you. Reason is the kind of program that "how it's done" is the most intriguing and special part :-) There are so many patching and cabling options and it's just that extra layer of functionality that makes it extraordinary.
You can also use Control Room Out to sidechain the master bus compressor, to filter frequencies that you want the compressor to ignore

@@Chrisreedbeats the Reason channel has a video about it, but I can't post a link in comments. It's called "Advanced Mastering - Focusing the Master Bus Compressor"
You simply cable the control room out to a filter and remove the frequencies you want the master bus compressor to ignore. Route this filter to the master bus side chain input and ensure the Key button is enabled. That should do the trick. This technique is normally used to remove low frequencies.

Looks like you still got it “wrong” since the user guide says to connect the control room output to SEPARATE outputs on the Hardware Interface, not to the MAIN outputs as you have done in this video. However, if your interface only has two outputs you don’t have a choice, but your interface already has a volume control so in this case you don’t need the CR outputs! Also, yea you have 6 dB gain but as poohbear points out you DON”T have any additional headroom so it’s likely you’ll simply clip if you turn up the CR out above 0 dBFS.
😅😅😅 I thought I mentioned that in the video. I have the scarlet 2i2 so I only have the 2 main outputs. Others may have more outputs, like the 4i4 or others. Heck even the Rodecaster Pro 2 has multiple outputs. Still trynna get my hand on one of those. Thanks for watching!
There’s no right or wrong but this is based on the big desks we used to use in the 80s and 90s at EMI studios, the Neves, SSLs (on which the Reason mixer is loosely based), Sony Oxfords etc. It’s a very handy feature if you have a separate studio and control room and particularly if you’re likely to have multiple musicians listening to different mixes but wanted to have a baseline, being what is listened to in the control room. It was unheard of to mix as you were recording, specifically because automation of the mix was a clunky and complex thing, even on these state of the art consoles. The Neve automation used a 3.5inch floppy to store its data on, and the SSL used 8 inch floppies! With everything being hardware and automaton being synchronised to tape using SMPTE timecode, a mix was not something you could switch in and out of. So after the recording part, we’d make what was called a monitor mix, using what was coming out of these control room outputs as something to listen to on your car cassette player. The main mix out was often only used in the mixing sessions. We have so much flexibility these days and the level of technology is so much more democratic but sometimes it’s good to create workflow limitations to mimic the old days just to get the same vibe. Sometimes having no limits can be overwhelming to the creative process.

Really helpful, thank you - Reason Studios wouldn't default with a "wrong" configuration though. The "reason" Master is wired up is that many of us have studio monitors with either volume controls or a hardware mixer (for control room) that we can adjust without affecting the Master. Keep making helpful videos!
There is one big reason to why the Master Outs are wired to the audio outs as default, Channels 1 and 2 on the Audio Output is what is rendered on export, so if you wire up your Control Room out that is what will be rendered and not from the Master out.
Control Room Level, this will attenuate or boost the signal, this means you can push the signal above 0db and even in the video you could hear it totally distort.
Make good use of your Volume level on your external hardware amp\device.
The Control Room out is handy for monitoring the Sends and Returns as you can do that separately and for my personal setup I use the Control Room out for my monitoring chain.

I always have my master wired to 1&2 and control the monitor level from my audio interface instead, so that the master out is always unaffected by my monitor levels.
I don’t have any amps to boost sound so this helps me 🤷🏾♂️. Plus when I’m on my laptop the extra dbs really come in handy.
I think the Scarlett is cool but I always end up cranking the headphone volume to the max.
I have decent headphones as well but idk just need a bit more volume sometimes.

@@Chrisreedbeats Having to crank the headphone output on your Scarlett is probably more to do with what Ohms your headphones are. I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990Pro 250 Ohm and I have to crank the volume much higher than on my AudioTechnica ATH-M50X which I believe are only 80 Ohms - I have the same interface as you.

@@Chrisreedbeats the Audio-Technicas sound good at lower volumes as their impedance is only 38 Ohms apparently. So the lower the impedance the less you have to drive them. Plus they are a closed back headphones so block out outside noise. Unlike my dt-990 which are open back. On the Scarlett, the headphone knob I usually have between 9 o’clock & 11 o’clock position with the ATs and between 1 o’clock and 3 o’clock with the DT990s
Also keep in mind bro, it says "use control room out for monitoring. so you wont affect the master output signal". So we have to reroute the master out cables back to the big meter to get the correct signal to the exported file. Control room out is just like a interface so to say but for the engineers.

If you have an external volume knob though...it doesn't matter. In 5 years, I think I've touched the Master Fader all of once. Unless you've got a big console in front of you that you need to go to 2 different pairs of monitors, or a headphone amp...it really doesn't matter.

Not wrong, just a matter of your own workflow. I've used separate monitoring busses or not in Reason and in other DAWs for yonks and either configuration works perfectly well for anything I'm doing. It's always nice to have the option though. e.g. for headphones. +1 for RTFM, I always tell people to do that, and they never listen 🙂
The Reason manual is one of the the better manuals out there, not quite as good as the Ableton manual but close.

when i use a redrum, how do i make each of the 10 drums go to different faders on the white colored mixer? (not the dark gray one) if i put 10 drums in a redrum it all goes to one fader on the mixer & i hate that, so I always make a new redrum for EACH DRUM (crazy inefficient for your CPU) & i've been doing that for 20 years (lol) is there a quick & easy way to make each drum go to a different fader, so I don't have to make a new redrum for each drum I put in the beat?
In Windows 10 there is a Screan recoreder and records the Screan and Audio from the selected program window, it does not capture the entire screen and also does not capture VSTs. This has its advantages and disadvantages but the audio capture is the audio you hear while recording.
hmmm I have never tried the windows 10 screen recorder. Might have to give that a look through.

I want to mention one more important use case for the control room out: If you already have some instrumental tracks in Reason and want to record live vocals to them. Often the singer wants to hear her voice louder and the instrumental tracks quieter in her headphones. If you use an audio interface like the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 she can direct monitor her voice. If she now says: Please make the playback quieter, you simply can turn down the control room out volume without affecting the master bus.
I have done this and it is great. However when you export the song, your VU meter won't match. The track will be too quiet. That was what I experienced.
So if you are to leave the Master bus in terms of input channeling, why is there a pair of jack ports on them? Genuine question! Just wanna know what its purpose is…..
I still don't get why you would need the control room out. If you want to listen to your music louder you can just turn up your mixer/amp. This would only make sense if you have a device without the ablility to control your output externally.

Reasons is the closest thing to working in a studio environment. Reasons is a engineers software, and rack gear enthusiast. Works perfect with any outboard MIDI gear and hard disk recorders. If you trying to work like your in a studio environment this is the software to use.
Yea thats a whole bunch of extra bs, they make volume knobs on your speakers or interface for a reason (no pun intended) one of the things that irritate me with this daw🤣let's create a whole bunch of extra steps for very simple things
It's like the Listen Bus in other DAWs such as Studio One. Not a big deal if you don't use it.
I switch to CTRL out every time I start a project. I send the master outs to an EQ, and route it back to the Master side chain and roll off the bass to the compressor.
That’s a cool option, but would it not be the same if we created a couple buses and routed them to our master? Not trying to be smart, truly curious. Or would we lose certain options by not using the control room?
I’ve got a midi controller knob permanently assigned to the control room knob for adjusting monitor level without needing the mouse. In a studio with a large format console you would definitely see a monitor level knob somewhere, easy to reach in the master section.
That's a good tip! I need another midi controller with more surface controls, My 88 keyboard doesn't have many and the ones it does will not work correctly with Reason.

This control room out is added to the real SSL because in big studios you dont want to walk up to your interfaces all the time. For a project studio this can just act as an additional output of everything basically
Oh man I think this might really confuse people so I am going to make it as simple as possible. NO, if you have a modern audio interface you have not been using Reason wrong this entire time, and that manual info is probably from 2 decades ago.
In the most simple terms: Mix out is the level of the actual mix, which is what it defaults to monitoring to.
Ctrl out is the equivalent of control room output on an analog mixer (Reason really tries to copy the analog paradigm) which is simply the MONITORING level being sent to your speakers.
BUT, any modern audio interface has its own monitoring knob, therefore making this entire video a bit of noob panic inducing for nothing. Of course I keep reason's output as it is, the mix output, and I monitor the level to my speakers using the monitor dial (which is a lot more pleasant to use than a mouse) on my interface.
Even if you are using a laptop with windows in built audio, you can use windows volume as your "ctrl room out" and still use Reason at the default settings.
I have 4 finger up and down on trackpad as windows volume control, very easy to do and works perfectly and is actually very responsive. Now that I have bought an interface for my laptop as well when I am in a music mood when in bed, I have bought a little portable arturia minifuse 2 interface which works brilliantly with Reason and has, you guessed it, a big, tactile monitoring knob on it (i.e. its own control room function).
If for some reason (no pun intended) you want to use Reason's digital control room knob to control the level of your monitoring, then sure, follow the video. For everyone else, please don't worry about it.
I think you missed the part where some people want to hear the music louder than the mix out is providing with out clipping or overdriving the master volume.
Even with an interface, and even with using Windows audio to control volume, Reason Control Room out will give you even more volume along with those options, while not changing your actual master out. It’s monitoring right? I think I mentioned headphone amps and other gain increasing technology for those that really want to crank the volume.

@@Chrisreedbeats I tested it, I have no idea what you are on about. The volume is identical to my interface when cranked or reason ctrl room when cranked. I missed nothing - it's monitoring level, nothing more. That's what a control room out is. You're trying to play semantics now because the whole video is ridiculous with a sensationalist title and you've been called out on it. Do you have any experience at all with real mixers with ctrl room out? Or interfaces with separate monitor control sections or monitor stations made for this specific feature?
Edit, I see, you are talking about the extra 6db control room can give you on top of your monitoring already being cranked to 11. I actually don't recommend it, but, as with everything, YMMV.
I am in my bedroom right now using a little gen 1 IK Multimedia iLoud and it gets to deafening volumes with just the arturia minifuse monitor out pumped up and reason ctrl room at unity gain. I couldn't bear the thought of using another 6db on top.
It will just distort the speaker anyway if I try pump those extra 6db on top. So that's a basic single speaker, anyone with actual dual monitors with way more power than that, who want to keep their hearing, might not worry about the 6DB, and of course there ARE those that may want to use a mouse and digital knob to control monitoring level, in that case, yes, the reason ctrl room is the correct reason mixer output to use to your audio card out.
@@Chrisreedbeats Let me give you another example of how it works in the real world and how any pro engineer does it if they happen to be using an analog desk.
1) If they are simply plugging their studio monitors directly into the desk and monitoring from there, they will plug them into the control room out and use that for gain monitoring. Exactly like what you are doing with Reason
2)If they have multiple sets of monitors, and/or using a monitoring station rather than the desk, they will take the MIX out into the monitoring station. That's just the way it is.
Reason was made as a totally ITB "you can do it on a laptop and a mouse" production system 20 years back when that manual was written. No one uses an audio interface without a proper monitor section in 2024.
All that said, IF you are using internal PC audio out, it can be a bit soft vs a good interface, so I can agree with you that the bit of extra gain from the reason ctrl room could help there in that ONE and ONLY scenario and could be used as an alternative to Windows's level mixer.

To sumarised ,master bus is what you actualy print on export, ctrl room is for the monitor speaker and your hearing confort. Usualy a mastering engineering people, always ask for minus 12 dbfs,on the master bus without the bus compressor rack to have headroom to use hardware or software one on there final step , by the way, youtube always apply a limiting of -1.00 dbfs for any video, but yeah the control room help improving the mix before limiting or maximize any sound output.
You need the master out bus to check for clipping and attenuation, this feature wasn’t in the older versions of reason

Happily I’ve been using these outputs correctly because I read through the manual at the beginning, reading manuals can be boring and tedious but it’s really worth it. Learning from RUclips tutorials and reviews can be useful too but you can also pick up someone else’s bad habits.

personally I always have the default master out to inputs 1&2 my desk has loads of gain for control room , I don't believe this effects quality as long as you gain stage correctly, as mentioned by another comment it's a good tool to use as a side chain compressor with a cut off filter but I generally have no use for it 👊
For anyone who's ever worked in a real studio this is very obvious as its how a real mixer works. You should read the manual on the whole mixer, its very complex but much more like a real console than any of the other DAWs virtual mixing screens. I suggest you sidechain the bus compressor with a filter so it works better on bass heavy signals, another real-world trick you can do with Reason.

Yeah fk all that, when is Reason going to give us more than one MIDI out port to send MIDI clock out to hardware..? it's insane we can only route MIDI clock to one MIDI out port, every other DAW you can send clock to multiple MIDI outs at same time.
I also realised that, in the master section, I should be using the input knobs to mix, rather than the volume faders. Those apparently are for automation and sound design stuff.
Not exactly. You want to use the input knobs for gain staging, but still use the volume faders for mixing. The reason is because the input knobs control the signal strength of the incoming signal, and then any processing you want is applied to it. Then, the volume faders control the volume AFTER the processing takes place. If you have a part that you don't want to be very loud, but you still want to have effects on it, it is better to apply the effects to the strong signal and then turn it down. Many effects are optimized for strong input signals.

PRO TIP: what you should be doing is using your control room out and putting it into an eq and then feeding that into your master sidechain comp and then taking the bass out of the eq and then when you use your master comp it will only compress above what you took out of the control ouput therefor you won't use your master comp on the bass and be over compressing. theres is normally a hp option on the real SSL master compressor but since this doesn't have one this is super necessary to get the best out of your mix.

It doesn't matter for the export. The exported signal will always be the master out signal - even if there are no cables connected there.

what about when producers that use reason and using a monitoring station device or controlling the volume from the audio interface?
Same thing really. Reason should recognize your device and the different outputs that it has

@@ivanvelez7668 hahahahaha yes sir. But also, you can use effects on that control out to make it even louder. Just keep in my that it’s a monitor and not the actually sound of your project at that point. Hmm can we use this control out to mix in mono? Or even isolate the mid range and use it to mix mid frequencies only?
@@Chrisreedbeats I thought I'd ask cause my hearing is not as normal as many talented music producers out there. In fact I was born with hear loss to both of my ears. I do wear hearing aids for my hearing loss but when I wear headphones I take them off. If I put my headphones on with hearing aids on my ears then my hearing aids will get feedback noise and that hurts my ears.
