You are right , his voice was able to sing with an incredible power, but able also of the most beautifull pianissimo ( here "quando la luce splendera" like it is written) , I cannot stop crying on listening the end of this aria!My God what a voice! He din't had the end of the career he deserted!
¡¡¡CORELLI SUBLIME Il Grande Maestro!
No opera singer period can get next to Franco. That includes female singers The first time I ever heard Franco back in the sixties at age 14 or 15 I was blown away. So was my mother and a friend of mine.
Can you imagine watching this performance at the Met? Franco Corelli and Anna Moffo?? Forget the singing: the eye candy alone would have been to die for.
Franco Corelli was by far the best tenor of the past century. My late friend was in the chorus at the Met for 24 of his appearances in the 60s. Remarkable talent with Hollywood good looks. In all due respect Pavorotti couldn't hold a candle to him...over rated because people simple don't know any better today. Several great tenors of the 50s and 60s.
I heard Franco for the first time in 1961. No other tenor comes close to him. Listen to that gorgeous voice which matches his gorgeous face . He is a perfect spinto heroic tenor. His lisp adds to the beauty of his voice in my opinion.
If Corelli's voice makes you mad.....then do not listen to him. It makes some people stupid for example when they listen and do not realize that he was of the GREATEST tenors ever. Run and tell them I said so!
. Say what you say the reality is that the great Franco Corelli is the best "Prince Calaf," even now, his beautiful and powerful voice and expertise to apply it in their interpretations. therefore always been the most in Europe and the MET. since it debuted, each year, operates season tickets were sold out immediately when it was announced to the great Corelli, until he decided to retire for a long time asked him to return.
Sublime such a rich dark expressive voice with a bright ringing top, an aria much better suited to Corelli's spinto tenor than the more popular version by Pavarotti
A personal note from a long time opera going non-musician. Among my many Turandots, I saw a 1966-67 Corelli-Nilsson Met Turandot with Freni, a 1978 Pavarotti-Caballe-Mitchell in San Francisco and even a 1961 production in East Berlin with Helge Rosvenge, directed by Ponelle. It definitely was Corelli's role. He wasoverwhelming but Pav was also wonderful with that amazing voice. Domingo 21 yrs.ago was terrific and the best of the recent ones is Giordani who actually reminded me of Corelli.
It is funny to see all those comments , to try to explain that Corelli is (was unfortunately) the most incredible Tenor of the 20th century !He was handsome like a movie star , and his voice was a treasure! When you heard it on stage it was absolutely the same on recordings! Proabbly more impressive!I was at the Paris Opera for TURANDOT with Nilsson!A real dream ! He is the best Calaf for ever! And I think that he cannot be surpassed on Nessun Dorma(even Pavarotti said that!!!! )!!!!
You are joking right this is either the best or the second best rendition of the aria ever recorded.I just don't understand anyone say that Potts sounded better. How do even know he even loves the aria.Just like you with Potts,I feel greatness listening to this.
Agreed. When people listen to seperate parts i.e arias alone they don't appreciate a dramatic/spinto vocalist timber and power but apply to full opera and anyone would know that such a singer is needed.
My dad is a composer/tenor. Franco Corelli is/was/always will be his role model. My dad always dreamed he would be ableto meet him someday. When Corelli passed away, it was a very sad day.
Corelli too could go soft. Think of the famous, incredible diminuendo in "E lucevan le stelle". It was fantastic, very impressive, especially considering his huge instrument, added to the drama. His high register was unique: dark and bright at the same time. He had the most masculine high register of them all.
Seeing all these comments I'm interrogating myself. "Are you a normal person?!!!!" I do think that this version is the greatest ever performed. Is there anyone who thinks the same?
ES INCREIBLE ESTA ARIA, SOLO EN LAS VOCES DE CORELLI Y PAVAROTTI ARRANCA LAGRIMAS DESDE LO MAS ADENTRO DEL CORAZON. QUE VOZ LA DE ESTOS DOS TENORES, NO CREO QUE NADIE MAS LAS INTERPRETE COMO ELLOS, AUNQUE DEBO CONFESAR QUE PARA MI EPOCA, CORELLI YA SE HABIA RETIRADO Y SOLO LA HE PODIDO ESCUCHAR DE LA VOZ DE PAVAROTTI Y ES SUBLIME. QUE LASTIMA QUE PUCCINI NO HAYA TERMINADO LA OPERA.
One of the comments made was that no tenor could touch Corelli in the roles of Chenier, Manrico and Calaf! So true! But we need to add Cavaradossi, Alvaro (in Forza), and Enzo in Gioconda to that list!! What a shame that the Live from the Met series didn't exist when Corelli was still singing!! Corelli in HD would be to die for!!!
You are listening to one of the best opera singers that the world has ever seen. A solid powerful and beautiful performance but his singing in Andre Chenier will always be the opera to remember him by. Corellis performaing in that opera was totoally on different level. It was incredible
Sometimes you forget just how amazingly open-throated those high notes of his were! I heard him in Chenier with Tebaldi, and this "Nessun Dorma" has reminded me of how simply RICH their voices were together. Thanks very much to whoever posted this; I actually owned that recording once . . . .
I have heard almost every legit. tenor, past and present, perform this aria, and Corelli is the only one who sends shivers down my back. Was was AWESOME. They'll never be another like him.
thanks a lot. this version makes my day. I'm really happy, that I had opportunity finally listen to this piece :) I have goose-flesh since first word he sang.
On stage without doubt the best Calaf and Andrea Chenier EVER.What a shame this star burned out so quickly.Bit thankfully we still have his best moments.
I just love his voice and interpretation. This aria is for a heroic tenor, and he makes it worth listening to his interpretation. I am aware of other great interpretations of this area. But to me this interpretation is iconic.
Thank you.You know in the old days if we were having this discussion face to face,we would probably be throwing chairs at each other(literally and/or fugaratively). It is sad that people still continue to do so today.
I saw quite a few Corelli Tosca's with Tebaldi. The power and squillo of Corelli was incomparable and Tebaldi really performed the most beautiful vissi d'arte ever. You are riht Victoria!Victoria! does literally shake the Earth.
I keep saying that Corelli has the same voive as Monaco. But he sings like Tito Shipa. Te voice is heroic, but the soul is so rich, and sensitive. For example I admire Monaco's Chenier, bur Corelli's almost makes me cry.
No, Corelli was always a tenor. But I can understand why someone might think that. A little bit of trivia: The high B at the end of the aria....Puccini actually wrote it on a 16th note...With no fermata...Much more exciting the way its always done tho...
Interesting,In an interview,he did say that he had to go back and study to reduce the verbratto in his voice but did not mention the goat like sound.I heard FC live in Trovatore at the Met circa 1961.It was a thrilling performance with lots of energy. He hit a D-flat in the terzetto that was really outstanding plus the Di Quellla Pira was also wonderful.FC,like other great spintos had the ability to caress the music and also sound very heroic when necessary. He did suffer from stage fright
As Herbert von Karajan said on Corelli: "A voice of heroic power, yet with great beauty of tone; darkly sensuous, mysteriously melancholic . . . but above all, a voice of thunder and lightning, fire and blood." Do you think Karajan wasn't listening attentively enough?
Tu UNICO GRANDE TENORE
Most likely the Greatest Tenor that ever lived - thanks for posting.
You are right , his voice was able to sing with an incredible power, but able also of the most beautifull pianissimo ( here "quando la luce splendera" like it is written) , I cannot stop crying on listening the end of this aria!My God what a voice! He din't had the end of the career he deserted!
No one can approach this great tenor. He was head & shoulders above them ALL!
¡¡¡CORELLI SUBLIME Il Grande Maestro!
NOBODY can approach this sublime Tenor ! He has been THE tenor of the 20th Century ! He has not been remplaced !

Franco Corelli - primo tenore assoluto !!!
yes..yes..
2:35, The echo and power of his voice scooping up to that B, my god!!
I heard Franco for the first time in 1961. No other tenor comes close to him. Listen to that gorgeous voice which matches his gorgeous face . He is a perfect spinto heroic tenor. His lisp adds to the beauty of his voice in my opinion.
Csodalatos Tenor❤
Corelli - Franco - thank you! He fills and feels every note and poetic lyric - he understands everything and he's a gift.
Wow... what a man, what an artist, what a performer, what a singer....

I agree, I saw/heard them performing Turandot and it was something to behold! Almost Madness of the most Divine sort!
I agree.I don't get to see him much unless in Europe but i think he has already proven to be the best spinto today.

All hail Franco, a real Calaf!!!! Great performance.
The last bflat of the aforementioned "Ch'ella mi creda" rings out, exciting the audience into applause and bravos at the end.
Amazing.. .💖

What can you say but simply superb. He realy does just blow you away.

Franco is the Man.good looking. a superb actor and can sing with the best of them!
Gives me goose bumps when he picks up again after the chorus. What a singer!
Agreed. When people listen to seperate parts i.e arias alone they don't appreciate a dramatic/spinto vocalist timber and power but apply to full opera and anyone would know that such a singer is needed.
What a voice! Dark, splendid and exciting! I just can't find words to describe him!
My dad is a composer/tenor. Franco Corelli is/was/always will be his role model. My dad always dreamed he would be ableto meet him someday. When Corelli passed away, it was a very sad day.
Thank you for posting this - Corelli WAS Calaf. Nobody could do "Nessun Dorma" like he did!

La mejor voz de todos los tiempos

Leggenda .Gli altri tutti dietro e in fila .

Gasp! What a thrilling, magnificent voice. What a beautiful man. I'm ecstatic whenever I listen to this powerful video and now I'm addicted to it.
Without a doubt, the best Calaf ever. No one could touch him as Chenier, Manrico or Calaf! May these recordings live forever!

A brilliant tenor with few peers - awesome vocals & phrasing -
hes low registry is awesome! and lets not forget his voice and vibrato is so powerful! his high notes are unbelievable too!
Sometimes you forget just how amazingly open-throated those high notes of his were! I heard him in Chenier with Tebaldi, and this "Nessun Dorma" has reminded me of how simply RICH their voices were together. Thanks very much to whoever posted this; I actually owned that recording once . . . .
Corelli's Nessun dorma melts my heart.
Absolutely the best Calaf ever!
I have heard almost every legit. tenor, past and present, perform this aria, and Corelli is the only one who sends shivers down my back. Was was AWESOME. They'll never be another like him.
Quelle voix parfaite !!!
Mlm
My GOD I ADORED CORELLIN

The best finish I EVER heard.
Sublime Corelli.......
thanks a lot. this version makes my day. I'm really happy, that I had opportunity finally listen to this piece :) I have goose-flesh since first word he sang.
yes this is absolutely true, his voice was simply SHOCKINGLY powerful
On stage without doubt the best Calaf and Andrea Chenier EVER.What a shame this star burned out so quickly.Bit thankfully we still have his best moments.
Thanks for posting, amazing sound...
The best Calaf ever, by 10 county miles. And he looked like a god, too.
IMMENSO ! SCONFINATO ! IRRAGGIUNGIBILE ! UNICOOOOOOOO !!!!!
Definitely yes.
Yes, Corelli is the best Kalaf, forever !!!!
Thank you. I totally agree.
The feeling is mutual.
I just love his voice and interpretation. This aria is for a heroic tenor, and he makes it worth listening to his interpretation. I am aware of other great interpretations of this area. But to me this interpretation is iconic.
Magnificent!
I can't believe how amazing he sounded even live !!! with no recording tricks.
Does any tenor match Corelli in this role? Not in my time or in the foreseeable future.
Thank you.You know in the old days if we were having this discussion face to face,we would probably be throwing chairs at each other(literally and/or fugaratively). It is sad that people still continue to do so today.
Absolutely agree!
Very lovely!
You are listening to one of the finest voices of the twentieth century.....and you talk about smooth!!!
Agreed, let's just enjoy Corelli. My favorite tenor!
I love you, Franco!
Thank you very much! and well said!
if i may repeat your words-
"Enjoy the history!"
I saw quite a few Corelli Tosca's with Tebaldi. The power and squillo of Corelli was incomparable and Tebaldi really performed the most beautiful vissi d'arte ever. You are riht Victoria!Victoria! does literally shake the Earth.
ultimate stuff...imagine hearing it today.
@orovalleydude I agree, this is the best ever version. but there are others.
I keep saying that Corelli has the same voive as Monaco. But he sings like Tito Shipa. Te voice is heroic, but the soul is so rich, and sensitive. For example I admire Monaco's Chenier, bur Corelli's almost makes me cry.

Increible..
By the way this is a live performance, not a studio recording...making it even more amazing...he really is spectacular, isn't he?
As Herbert von Karajan said on Corelli: "A voice of heroic power, yet with great beauty of tone; darkly sensuous, mysteriously melancholic . . . but above all, a voice of thunder and lightning, fire and blood." Do you think Karajan wasn't listening attentively enough?
i mustlisten every day to franco
He has no equal!
bravo CORELLI!!!!!there is great heroism in his wonderful voice,he's the bast, even than PAVAROTTI,I think so...
This always reminds me of The Killing Fields.
There`s no one to touch Corelli in this- voices like his are like lottery wins, seldom and wonderful..
Fantástico!!!
That are good news. I always liked Bocelli's voice, so I am pleased to hear, that it works in an opera house too.
The best Calaf, the best Chenier, the best Rodolfo... the best... period!!!
Corelli & Pavartotti The Perfects
He is so good looking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for telling us, most people have difficulty telling a man from a woman, how do you do it?
