I don't think anyone is going to buy the ASIV if it comes out because of the lack of firmware updates for the III. I would say open gate is almost a necessity these days
I think sony need to separate FX3 and a7s , for a7sIV I think should be still keep 12MP and more improve low light performance maybe 3 base iso (I don't know )just keep the king of the low light feature for a7S, and the other hand, FX3 II should get 6K or 8K resolution , open gate something like that , but loose the low light feature and mechanical shutter like a7s
Canon has compressed internal RAW recording (Da Vinci Resolve can handle it) on Cinema cameras and on R5C. On RF-EF adapter you have variable ND filter and CF-B costs are getting down (Angelbird 1 TB SE: 340 Euro in Italy), so you don't need external recording on ssds (I'm more confident on cards than an ssd linked by short cable). Ps. I'm an hybrid shooter: I film weddings using both Sony and Canon with prime lenses.
I'd love it to do what I think Panasonic can do where it can control gimbals without raveneye. So the camera tells the gimbal what to do. Means you can get tracking on a RS3 mini which is mad.
Every time I use the a7S III even today, I'm impressed by how well it holds its own and stacks up to more modern Sony models, even considering it hasn't gotten the proper firmware update it deserves... Hopefully the a7S IV would get the FX3/FX30 "cinema camera" treatment in terms of software features, e.g. LUT support, Cine EI /Quick and Flexible ISO. Regardless of the sensor they use, getting APS-C crop mode in 4K would be a nice addition - I suspect this might be the time Sony would finally go beyond the 12MP sensor and stretch into 6K or 8K territory.
Yeah the A7S III and FX3 didn’t leave us wanting for much. There are still “nice-to-haves” that they could add in, but the A7S IV might as well be an FX3 Mk II so it can just double down on having the best video/film features.
For me 24MP sensor with 4k crop availability would be sweet. Also 4k120fps with active stabilization and no crop. 240fps 4k even with no audio would be sweet...
Matt, using pro blade SSD’s with the Kondor blue ssd top handle is a dream. Sony should go with this option or SSD’s as a whole. That and allow braw externally, then it’s a case of take my money.
All I want is customizable external display info. I love putting my Atomos shinobi on top of the camera and shotting handheld but need to keep looking at the camera screen for information.
Here is what i want from a7siv, i dont know who need 8k 60 fps at this point honestly. The storage and cloud options aren't getting cheaper. -> 4k 120fps(variable shutter to match with flickers) , with shutter angle ->lower base iso for slog 3 profile,if possible a stop better dynamic range. False colors, better resolution on screen(if possible a bigger screen by half an inch) and option for auto brightness like smartphones(with option to turn it off). -> there will be no usb c recording since this doesn't sit right with launching expensive type A cards(but who knows) -> tilt and flip screen like a7rv -> taking out ibis for internal nd is possible if Catalyst browse gets implemented better and becomes very easy to use. (but no hope) ->internal memory at least 256gb(there could be pricing like phone for 512gb or 1tb version) ->a focusing feature that canon has - if a subject in focus goes out of frame it should not change focus distance until that subject is in focus
Hey buddy it's great that you open this topic. We think that future Sony FX3 or a7sIV need to have a global shutter! That will be a great step up for the whole industry. Yes, it will be more expensive but we think it is worth it. The second very important thing is... Mi shoe! Yes, it's an amazing option but there is a big issue... If you use smallrig half cage with let's say Kondor blue top handle then there is no way that you can use the benefits of a hot shoe mount. We have a Sony B1M mic. Let's explain the problem and offer a super easy solution (if Sony makes that one of course). Ok, there is an outstanding Sony B1M mic and the perfect Sony FX3 cam. But, let's say that you want to use FX3 without the original Sony top handle, so how you will get the perfect sound? with B1M! Ok, but if you want to use Kondor Blue or any other top handle, then how you can use B1M? there is no option for that, correct? Because Sony B1M works only with the Mi shoe mount. Or Sony UWP-26 with an additional Sony SMAD-P5 Digital MI Shoe Adapter. How this problem can be solved? Sony needs to make a Mi shoe cable, from one side to be thinly a plastic cover which is coming with sony fx3 to produce the hot shoe and from other side to be a regular hot shoe with all connectors so you can easily plug in Sony mics. We think that will be a great solution and people will be more than happy cause their fx3 and all other Sony cameras that support Mi shoe mount will be more useful as other Sony mics as well. Think about this... It will be great if you can do some video about this problem because you have some influence and probably Sony will take your advice... Cheers :) and keep rocking!
Honestly, those features aren’t huge for me. I’d love 5k or 6k 60p full frame and 4k super 35 crop options for tighter high res shots on the fly. Bigger screen like the a7r5, clean feed overlays on hdmi similar to blackmagic. Would love internal ND but it’s not a huge deal. Better ibis would be great.
Shutter Angle, internal raw recording, the ability to record externally to ssd, and breathing compensation, along with that straight out of camera video look that Canon has, would make people extremely happy. Sony could add a lot of this through firmware right now, but they won't. You are not going to get an internal ND filter in a small body like this because no one has this in a body of this size, and Sony already has a solution for this in a larger body called the Fx6. Nikon has paved the way for Sony, Canon, and others to get internal raw recording, but you are correct. I can't see a reason to release an A7SIV. It would be too redundant
Shutter Angle, external timecode input, anamorphic desqueeze, and open gate recording are all I'm hoping for in the next FX3 / a7s body. All of which feel like they could be firmware updates... I'd prefer to keep IBIS over internal ND. You can always add an ND to a lens or matte box Also maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I don't like S-Cinetone. I prefer either the default look straight out of camera for my Rec709 deliverables or S-Log3.cine if the project will have color grading. Very curious to see what Sony does in the future, but honestly if feels like the current generation of cameras will be hard to beat!
I just wish sony could make the perfect camera: duo iso AND duo megapixels. If you toggle switch for photo you have a higher megapixel, if you choose to film, duo iso / low megapixel. + a propper viewfinder (we all gonna use external monitors anyways, so the monitor size doesn’t matter and we all can buy different ND’s) tbh, i’ve been doing pretty well with external ND’s. So, it doesn’t matter to me having them built in. I wouldn’t sacrifice camera body size for these additional filters.
Also maybe I am the odd one out here but I really don’t see the appeal of recording on external SSDs. I get that the savings are pretty significant, but I just don’t think I could overcome the anxiety of the cables getting tugged or something going wrong. I know many people do it and have not problems, I just know that for me I’d prefer redundant internal recording every day of the week.
id like a bump on the mp to 16mp, waveform and false color, dual video recording - record two videos simultaneously, one with lut applied in-camera, and one with the lut not applied (so that s-log3 version is there, in case u wanna edit it later in another way). three native iso's (3200 in addition to 12800), competent, bright and larger lcd screen. open gate, ability to add crops of various ratios in camera (while keeping the original uncropped - recorded simultaneously), ability to add various grains in camera. improvements in the wb area. but i gess panasonic is closer to all these than sony
It will be called FX3II or FX4... People will want it to 8k60p Raw internal with gimbal built in the sensor It will also need to be $500 and edit highlight videos internally
Hi! I love s-log3 but for weddings here in Spain is not worth it. Too much run and gun, very different than USA/UK. You don't have enough time to expose properly in lot of scenarios during the wedding. In my case, I use CINE4, and I love it when I use some of your LUTS (moody ones) or White Rivery TIMBRE/Dolce LUTS as well.
Never really understood this complaint. Use S-log3, turn on Gamma display assist to make sure you're exposed properly, throw on a LUT when you're in your NLE, and boom done.
@@PraiseYeezus Gamma display assist is rubish on sony a7 IV. When I use slog3 I use an external monitor (atomos shinobi) but still too heavy for being 12hours filming run&go. You should film an Spanish wedding, you would understand it haha
Agree with everything here. Going to add one more feature that is probably far from wedding film makers but definitely something VFX artists would love. Genlock so that we can get our footage to sync with Unreal Engine virtual production. Though, I would likely be the only one who would use it :P
IBIS doesn't actually move the sensor it is a mechanism that moves around inside the camera to compensate for the comera shake but the sensor is static!
I would like to see more megapixels so you can into APS-c mode not clear image zoom. Also a much higher resolution screen. Most of people that are using these cameras, or not looking through the viewfinder very often. Maybe a little bitter too🥲
That’s interesting, Matt. I am a HUGE advocate for slog3, however if someone is insisting on non-log, I would always recommend Neutral profile off. SCinetone looks amateur to me.
I think better integration with external monitors would be great. Imagine being able to control your Sony Camera through the touchscreen on your Atomos? Even if it was simple settings like framerates, shutter speeds (tho this should really be shutter angle ) ISO etc would be really handy. Make it happen Sony/Atomos/SmallHD!
Yo Matt, I love your videos, I've been watching you since the "Pacific", you know for how long. Please, please, close the aperture just a little bit while filming yourself. It's so distracting watching you (your eyes mostly) out of focus with such a shallow DOF. Or just step back 30-40 cm at least. No one cares if you have a few kilos more than you should, most of us are the same! And yeah, I mostly agree with you in this video, keep it going :)
I just ordered a FX3 yesterday to replace my a7iv as a cam in favor of 4k 120 and capability to use personal LUTs being hesitant for a such a long time as the a7iv has the better autofocus, color profile, crisper picture (handy when cropping/stabilizing in post), APSC crop etc. Please dont tell me the a7s4 is around the corner 😮😮😢😢
I'd love to see a higher megapixel sensor (e.g 24mp) whilst retaining the dual native isos of 800 & 12800, so we can use apsc mode to get extra reach when filming, and also just have higher res photos. Essentially if the A7IV/A1 and A7SIII had a baby!
I don’t think they would ever go for it, but I could see a world in which they keep the E-ND permanently in place and they just rate the camera’s ISO lower. I think the minimum on the FX6 ND is two stops. It definitely wouldn’t be ideal, but if they could get that down to 1 stop, or improve the sensitivity of the next camera you could still have a native 6400 iso for the higher sensitivity base and internal ND
Waiting for the FX4, Meanwhile my A7IV is a beast, sold my FX3 for more than I bought it, and very happy with it, Waiting for Internal ND's as well. Even some kind of VND clickable manually between the lens and the sensor would be great...
I definitely think a7s line is done after siii. I currently own an fx6 and siii as b-cam. We are still waiting on firmware updates for lens comp for a7siii lol. With the fx series, a7 and a7r lines being so good at video I think the "need" for an a7s line is done.

Catalyst Prepare for free. This is what I want. Or a partnership with Blackmagic to bring gyro stabilization to Resolve. 6K or 8K would be nice. Open gate, at least at 24p would be necessary (specially now with competition), INTERNAL RAW!
Agreed 100% with all of this, especially love your comments RE dropping the S line from the a7 series. I think it’s the smart move for an already crowded space for Sony models. Keep the a7 and a7R series, one affordable, one more advanced. I would tack on that I’d love to see more innovation from Sony, instead of just adding features already found on other cameras. For example, if they do indeed scrap the S series and go with more advanced features for an FX4 type model (I’m also totally fine with bulking the camera up as necessary, especially if we’ll have a more compact follow up like an FX40 that could still be gimbal friendly), then let’s add internal M.2 support with a Thunderbolt 4 connection? I know that’s a pipe dream, but as I said, I’d love to see Sony push the envelope more. But I’m also fine with Sony playing it safe and continuing to make reliable and gold standard cameras. 😊 Thanks Matt!
Yup..there is no need for an A7S4 anymore..what?..people want a "viewfinder"..lol..baffles me..that you need a "viewfinder" for a video centric camera..thats why they got rid of it when they made the FX3/FX30..lol
@@MaunoKoivistoOfficial then get the A74..the topic is not about a "Hybrid" camera..the A7S3..everyone knows is a "video centric" camera first and foremost and then a little stills camera hence that little 12 mgpxl in the camera..lol which is usesable obviously..but the point is that most videographers do not need a EVF..thats why they got rid of it in the FX3/FX30...lol

I would like a bigger body better shaped for how filmmakers hold a camera. Current a7siii has a photo camera body. My wishlists: .Bigger body easier to hold for filmmakers. .internal nd, but only if together with ibis. Definitely prefer ibis over internal nd 100%. .ssd external recording .bigger modula monitor, possibly detachable with option to mount it on top of the camera. .bigger battery Some may say “just get an fx6”. Trust me I tried and it’s too big and bulky for people like me who always travel and fly to go film events. Basically I think the successor of the a7siii should be a step below the fx6, with a similar body to the eos C.
Hey Sony, please make the next version of thea7s3/fx3 with the Internal varible ND filter and improve the image stabilization along with giving us actually cienema features! I believe this would kill off the competition for years to come.
No mention of higher resolution sensor?? I think a 6k sensor would be great for better quality (downsampled) 4k video with still very good low-light performance and an option for 6k recording at 24/30 fps. Also the ability to control shutter speed in increments like on the FX3 would be another great value add
To be honest a7siii has every upgrade everybody wished their sony a7sii had. And i still think we got a great camera, cant really complain or wish for anything more at this point.
Hey Matt! Great video! Have you thought of doing a 2023 video on monitors with good colour accuracy for editing by chance? Is it always best to buy a calibration device or can you get away with buying a calibrated monitor?
Nikon being Sony's image sensor customer should share insights as to how they defeated RED to be able to have internal compressed Raw. Much of Nikon's success is owed to Sony providing them sensors. So pay it forward.
It's no secret what Nikon did. They showed that patent troll Red's patent was invalid because they waited a year to file it. I can't wait for red to go bust, nothing of value will be lost.
I'll tell you what I don't want: 6K. Without hauling a completely different and larger sensor, I love what we have going for us. 4K120 with IBIS and super bright full frame sensor. LOVE this camera.
HDMI 2.1. External 4K (or 6K) 120fps to SSD.
I'd definitely buy a A7S IV if it has 24 megapixel, and better low light etc.
I love your videos, I alyways come to your channel for my wedding videography journey
Here is what i want from a7siv, i dont know who need 8k 60 fps at this point honestly. The storage and cloud options aren't getting cheaper.
-> 4k 120fps(variable shutter to match with flickers) , with shutter angle
->lower base iso for slog 3 profile,if possible a stop better dynamic range. False colors, better resolution on screen(if possible a bigger screen by half an inch) and option for auto brightness like smartphones(with option to turn it off).
-> there will be no usb c recording since this doesn't sit right with launching expensive type A cards(but who knows)
-> tilt and flip screen like a7rv
-> taking out ibis for internal nd is possible if Catalyst browse gets implemented better and becomes very easy to use. (but no hope)
->internal memory at least 256gb(there could be pricing like phone for 512gb or 1tb version)
->a focusing feature that canon has - if a subject in focus goes out of frame it should not change focus distance until that subject is in focus
The priority must be to solve most of SIII bugs, this camera is a total chaos!
I’d even take just an a7iv with 60p 4k full frame and an updated screen.
Hopefully, Sony will see this!
IMO, Sony won't make an a7s4 ! That would be the answer of non existing firmware on this camera for two years.
You can always add an ND to a lens or matte box
Also maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I don't like S-Cinetone. I prefer either the default look straight out of camera for my Rec709 deliverables or S-Log3.cine if the project will have color grading.
Very curious to see what Sony does in the future, but honestly if feels like the current generation of cameras will be hard to beat!
Looks like s5ii/x does it all 😂
I think I’d get an FX3 or equivalent. It would not surprise me if the A7s line came to an end.
Needs built in ND filter. With them big pixels it’s really needed. On the S3, I can’t film outside during the day without an ND filter.
As much as I'd love prores internally, doesn't that raise the price of the camera because of the licencing?
It might a bit, not sure how much though. 🤷♂️
I just bought 2 more A7S3, the autofocus is faster than the Fx line
That's just not true
@@EleazarGray I also have two FX3 and made the test with same G master lens and autofocus on the A7S3 is faster
id like a bump on the mp to 16mp, waveform and false color, dual video recording - record two videos simultaneously, one with lut applied in-camera, and one with the lut not applied (so that s-log3 version is there, in case u wanna edit it later in another way). three native iso's (3200 in addition to 12800), competent, bright and larger lcd screen. open gate, ability to add crops of various ratios in camera (while keeping the original uncropped - recorded simultaneously), ability to add various grains in camera. improvements in the wb area. but i gess panasonic is closer to all these than sony
It will be called FX3II or FX4...
People will want it to 8k60p Raw internal with gimbal built in the sensor
It will also need to be $500 and edit highlight videos internally
@@spayerini The more reason to use S-LOG3! You have a lot more room to correct a badly exposed image than on the standard picture profile.
@@Morpheus170 If you don't properly expose in S-LOG3 will be rubbish. Easier/faster to expose with others color profiles!
@@spayerini Not at all the case.
Agree with everything here. Going to add one more feature that is probably far from wedding film makers but definitely something VFX artists would love. Genlock so that we can get our footage to sync with Unreal Engine virtual production. Though, I would likely be the only one who would use it :P
Clicked the link thinking.. "what can 'WE' want, what do I want.. erm...".. but right off, I agree Matt... built in ND would be amazing
IBIS doesn't actually move the sensor it is a mechanism that moves around inside the camera to compensate for the comera shake but the sensor is static!
I love to have open gate!! also BRaw with an external monitor.
Agree on all but the ND.
False colour all i need ❤
I think better integration with external monitors would be great. Imagine being able to control your Sony Camera through the touchscreen on your Atomos? Even if it was simple settings like framerates, shutter speeds (tho this should really be shutter angle ) ISO etc would be really handy. Make it happen Sony/Atomos/SmallHD!
my Portkeys LH5P II minitor does nearly all the above mentioned
@@kasparello oh does it? Need to look into that. With Sony cameras?
Great job on the video Matt! Thanks for making it.
FX4 with ND, Big Hi -Res EV , better white balance (when run and gun) , 32 bit audio, timecode. Is this all too much to ask??
external recording and built in ND.
100% on the ND filter. Having gone from an A7SIII to an FX6, I cannot go back to not having it!
Hey!
For me False Colors is definitely needed, it would be helpful even for exposing photos
6k or 8k / 60p. Also Id like to be able to manually set what ISO are available to skip the noisy ISOs from 640-12800 when shooting slog 3
Friends, I have a question. Do anyone recommends to buy a A7S3 now (2023) or wait for the realase of the next one?
I'd love to see a higher megapixel sensor (e.g 24mp) whilst retaining the dual native isos of 800 & 12800, so we can use apsc mode to get extra reach when filming, and also just have higher res photos. Essentially if the A7IV/A1 and A7SIII had a baby!
Completely agree!
Sony needs to come out with an auto ND adapter. So it’s compatible across all there full frame cameras
I wish they would allow setting frame rate with a single touch of a button.
The A7SIV is already out, its called the recently firmware updated FX3. Also Sony needs to add an 180 degree shutter option.
Totally agree..when the FX3 dropped a few months after the S3..remember people were pissed off..lol Sony knew this at the time..they had no choice but to release the S3 bc everyone was waiting on it for so long..lol they released just to please people..even though they knew they had the FX3 down the line soon..lol I knew some people that sold their S3..as soon as the FX3 released..lol
@@ldmndz4652 Yepppp. I had the itch to switch to the fx3 a few times, but didn’t want to trade in my a7siii AND have to pay extra when they were both very similar. Just decided to take my loss. Lol
im waiting for it, i hope its released before june 2024
I was planning to buy the FX3 in the next few days should I wait for the a7s iv?
Hey enjoyed your perspective in the video Good ideas about upgrades and also the update on the raw patent situation with Nikon winning out. Quick question for you I like the cinema tone how would your preset lots work on that particular Kodak from Sony.
Thanks. CJ
Thanks! Yes the standard luts should work great
Catalyst Prepare for free.
@@ldmndz4652 Hybrid shooters need an EVF, 24 MP and 4k60.
@@ldmndz4652 That camera doesn't have the features. A7s is the hybrid camera for shooters who are serious about video. The FX line are the small form factor cinema cameras meant for pure video shooters, as you allude to yourself.
I would like a bigger body better shaped for how filmmakers hold a camera. Current a7siii has a photo camera body.
My wishlists:
.Bigger body easier to hold for filmmakers.
.internal nd, but only if together with ibis. Definitely prefer ibis over internal nd 100%.
.ssd external recording
.bigger modula monitor, possibly detachable with option to mount it on top of the camera.
.bigger battery
Some may say “just get an fx6”. Trust me I tried and it’s too big and bulky for people like me who always travel and fly to go film events.
Basically I think the successor of the a7siii should be a step below the fx6, with a similar body to the eos C.
I’m really hoping for open gate
Havent seen a vid in a while. ya look good brother! Diggin the new(?) setup
There is big chance they don’t make Sony a7s line up any more and just continue with Fx series and make a7m5 as perfect hybrid without heating issue
Hey have you noticed any problems with XAVC S 120 FPS 10 bit files not playing on new MAC Ventura OS 13.4?
A9S Please
To be honest a7siii has every upgrade everybody wished their sony a7sii had. And i still think we got a great camera, cant really complain or wish for anything more at this point.
Sorry for this off comment...I forgot the name of the editing company you sometimes use. Been searching for hours :(
Hey Matt! Great video!
Have you thought of doing a 2023 video on monitors with good colour accuracy for editing by chance?
Is it always best to buy a calibration device or can you get away with buying a calibrated monitor?
Open gate aswell please!
Nikon being Sony's image sensor customer should share insights as to how they defeated RED to be able to have internal compressed Raw. Much of Nikon's success is owed to Sony providing them sensors. So pay it forward.
Nvidia Eye-contact is super useful. Should give it a try.
How about Blackmagic RAW through the Video Assist? They should also enable this via a firmware update on the a7S III and the a7 IV.
I will say - battery life could be optimized. Larger mAH with the same or even larger batteries would pay for ND filters, etc.
But I feel bad for what they've accomplished. Might not buy another camera for a GOOD long while.
Agreed: We didn't buy any Sony because they still don't have Any of Panasonic's truly Pro-Level features that we need,
With Panasonic, all of this feature are in the one camera.
and with the new S5iix that you mentioned it even has a very good AF.
(Sony's AF is only slightly better, but you loose some 12 of the Panasonic features.
Such as:
Recording Pro-Res Internally, and Raw out
Swivel screen (from 10 years ago).
Waveform (They had for 10 years)
extractor Fan (Never overheats)
Baked in Luts They invented it
Best Ibis (from 10 years ago)
Better color, cheaper and so much more exclusive goodies.
However, Of the A7s4 gets half of Panasonic's generous features we will buy it.
Thaks for your good videos
Perhaps they could improve on the amount of stabilization the camera offers (more stops of stabilization).
I wonder if sony could get around the compressed raw, if the feature is only available with the battery grip addon.
How to increase volume for mpv player
great video! love the time taken to discuss legal vs physical constraints on camera design. Its fun to have subtitles on slog 3= slug three. Cinetone becomes acinetobacter
HI MATT, THRE HAVE BEEN REPORTS ABOUT VIDEOS SHOT WITH NEW SONY ALPHA CAMERAS CAUSING MORE EYE STRAIN. ANY SIMILAR EXPERIENCE REGARDING THIS? ALSO MANY CONTENT CREATORS USING NEW FULL FRAME SONY CAMERAS ARE GETTING PUFFY AND SWOLLEN EYES DUE TO THE EXCESS STRAIN. HOW IS YOUR EXPERIENCE?
The lowlight in the A7siii is terrible compared to the A7iv. Hopefully the next camera is great like the A7iv lowlight. The A7siii has too much noise reduction going on.
