    I am really sad that the A380 is now out of production and we have to settle for the A350 and 787. Both are good aircraft, but I have flown several times with connections using A380 and 787 combinations and in terms of passenger comfort the A380 was in a league of its own. Compare airlines by interiors mostly, but 737s especially had leg room problems next to windows, causing a repositioning of the leg nearest the window, so that hip and leg pain as well as some numbing can occur especially on longer flights.

    I used to fly into Doha 3 times a year as a kid (From Heathrow, 1982-1991), and it was almost always aboard a Gulf Air Lockheed Tri-Star. Good times and fond memories. I miss the old Tri-star adorned with Gulf Air livery and the huge golden falcon on the tail. It reminds me of my childhood. There were times when the plane was virtually empty, and as a kid, we'd have whole sections to ourselves to play in and while away the 7.5 hr flight time. That doesn't happen these days, aircraft are almost always nearly full, and even if they weren't, people would be too busy playing with their phones or the IFE system. We used to able to visit the flight deck whilst passing over the Alps and see what was going on in "the office", and chat to the flight crew. Times have changed. I feel old, and I'm "only" 43 ;(

    • @LeverPhile
      @LeverPhile 5 лет назад +4

      +1, the tri-star rocked. I flew on TWA ones from US to Europe a bunch when I was little in the 80s. Last one I flew on however was in 2005 on Thai Airlines from Athens to Bangkok and it was much like I remembered them from when I was a kid. Big planes and it even smelled the same as I remember the TWA ones.
      I also miss the smoking section in the back that planes used to have ... always people to talk to during long haul flights. I don't miss the smoking itself, but more the ability for groups of people to congregate and pass the time. Times have definitely changed.

      Hmm, I reckon the A380 has a better experience, having done 747 400. 777, A330, 787 and A380. Even long range 767 in the day. A 380 just feels spacious, quiet and solid.. The flashy windows and supposed atmospheric and humidity advantages of the 787 didn't do it for me on AUK to LAX, compared to A380, MEL_LAX. I thought it was more marketing than reality....

  • @mastergx1
    @mastergx1 Год назад +6

    I've flown everywhere on every plane available (I like to try different ones when I can). I have to say the 787 is my absolute favourate. The biggest thing for me is the lower altitude pressure in the cabin, along with the additional humidity - I can't stress enough how much difference this makes on a long flight. As Mentour said, you don't feel so tired and your mouth doesn't get so dry. For me personally I don't feel like I need to drink so much so i'm not back and fouth the WC every 10 mins! On that note, the pressure has an effect on how things taste - water tastes like water on a Dreamliner - on most other planes it does not! I have to say I didn't notice the difference between the A350 and the 787 for seating space - both give you ample room and you don't feel trapped or boxed in. All in all I think the 787 is a fantastic machine - Boeing really took notice of what mattered to customers and crew and designed the plane extremely well. I hate flying on anything else now!

    • @crazyjhey8050
      @crazyjhey8050 2 года назад +5

      @@MrSigmatico the problem with the max is they completely modified an existing airframe with systems that it wasn’t designed for. The 737 max is a completely different aircraft that is packaged into the 737 airframe. This saved Boeing millions in development costs because getting a type certificate for a new aircraft requires extensive testing. But by packing these new systems into the 737 airframe it restricted Boeing on how much they could modify the airframe. At a certain point it cannot be called a 737 and Boeing really pushed the limit on what they could get away with without going thru a type certification process. The FAA is also to blame the only reason Boeing got away with this is due to backroom deals they have with the FAA. On past projects Boeing has hired FAA personnel that helped push thru the certification process. They basically offer them high paying jobs that really wouldn’t require much from the employee. Its basically a bribe. Another industry that is infamous for this is the pharmaceutical industry. Just look up how many highly influential government employees the pharmaceutical companies have hired in the last decade. This is just the reality of American corporate politics.

    Flew Qantas Dreamline, Perth to London 17hours 25. Long flight but enabled non stop and saved 3 hours over other airlines. When you add time between beds it doesn't make much time difference but comfort with different cabin pressure certainly helps. Evening exit from Perth, early (dawn) arrival Heathrow. We sat near the toilets for extra leg space, which we won't do again. A lot of people waiting controlled the space too much and noisy. Would fly this route again mostly because the cost is slightly better.

    While the electronic shades are a cool feature, I hate that the control can be overridden by the cabin crew. I was on a flight that left from SYD at 13:30 and 15 minutes after takeoff, the crew dimmed all of the shades. We were flying over the G.B.R. and I wanted to get some photos (just for a couple minutes)- no luck. The other thing about the shade is that it doesn’t black out, so when you take a direct hit after sunrise, the sun is distracting in your eyes. Having said this, overall, I prefer, by an ever so slight margin the 787

    • @EleanorPeterson
      @EleanorPeterson 5 лет назад +3

      I don't like the partial window shading. Little sliding blinds are so much more flexible, IMHO. If you have to make allowances for distant aisle passengers on a wide-body seating layout, though, I can understand why they're in use.
      When I used to fly I always used thick, soft eye-pads [like a blindfold] which gave total control of light input whatever the window was set at. Nice and comfortable. Totally private. Couldn't be over-ridden by the cabin staff or played with by bored kids using the window controls as toys... And at just £1.99 an eye mask was much cheaper than a £2,500 'smart glass' window installation, too! ;-)

      I was on a US Airways flight from San Francisco to Bangkok. Cabin crews forgot to release the window shade override. The whole cabin was hit directly with the sun. I asked them to release the control. It was nearly 90 minutes of sunbathing.

    • @mwbgaming28

      That electronic shade thing is the single worst invention in aviation history
      A better way to do it would be to overlay an LCD display over the window (like a welding mask) and let you choose how dark the LCD becomes (without the ability for the crew to lock it or override it)

    • @royeb63
      @royeb63 4 года назад +8

      I don't like the electronic shading for several reasons.
      As you said, it looks cool, but that's about the only positive thing I can say about it.
      When dimmed, it blocks out the light, but does nothing about the heat. Sitting next to the window is like sitting next to a radiator.
      If you, like me, likes to take pictures/video and you're on the sunny side, you get the sun in your eyes because you have to clear the entire window.
      With regular blinds, you have the option of just lifting it enough to point the lens under. Also if you just want to peek out to see what you're flying over you can keep a small gap at the bottom and still enjoy your in-flight movie without the sun in your eyes.
      Have been on a 787 several times, but still prefer the 777. (Haven't tried the A350 yet though)

    • @tomcorwine3091
      @tomcorwine3091 3 года назад +3

      One advantage of being able to lock the electronic shades open is for takeoff and landing. If an emergency egress is needed, one needs to be able to look out the windows to check for height, fire, or debris. Allowing the crew to override the window setting allows that to be enforced.

    I flew on one last month and I was speechless. As a lifelong frequent flyer, I think I have been on just about every single aircraft made. Not too many have avoided my ass in it's seats. The 787 was so quiet, so comfortable that after 9 hours in the air, I felt normal. No jet lag, no dehydration, no problems that you typically experience when you step off a plane you've been in for that long.

    Do you wipe down the trays and other surfaces you touch? How is the leg room? Do all 3 seats recline, how far? Is the ride smoother if you sit in front, behind or on the wing? How fast is the WiFi ? How are the entertainment selections? Any improvements in bathroom design? Galley design? Food cart design, is it ever possible to walk around one? Stable temperature, stable pressure on accent and decent? Did your ears pop? All these questions would be a full "passenger" review.

    From a economy passenger standpoint the 9 abreast sitting which most airlines like for obvious reason, makes this aircraft one of the most uncomfortable aircrafts for long haul as the seats are too narrow...(have flown in this 3 times on a ten hour flight).Personally I prefer the A-350.

      @@crazyjhey8050 business class usually cost several times more than standard and for people who just want to go from A to B that's not an option. But it really depends on the airline how bad the standard/economy seats are. Worst I've flown with is by far British Airways - I'm only 187 cm and could barely fit in the seats on a 767 and it was a major exercise to get untangled in order to get up to use the toilet, which were also the absolute smallest Boeing will deliver. And for the long haul across the atlantic those cramped seats shouldn't be legal. Anyone else I've flown with have been way more spacious in comparison.

      Yah, I flew it from Oslo-Bangkok and back and it's by far the best aircraft to travel in, by far. It's an 11 hour flight and what I noticed the most was actually after the flight. All my previous long haul made my throat sore and my nose itchy and dry, but after stepping off the 787 I felt completely normal. The higher pressure and higher humidity allows you to arrive in better shape after a long flight and don't feel beat up and hung over like you do from other models. And the reduced noise doesn't hurt either. Not a huge problem, but I'm not a big fan of the windows without shutters. The darkest level isn't dark enough to shut out bright sunlight. I hope they're able to at least get the darkest level 50% darker in newer versions, as sleeping without blocking out the sun completely is harder.

    I flew in this aircraft for the first time recently. It was United Airlines Flight 1882 LAX-EWR. I was very impressed with the modern amenities the inflight enterainment tech and LED lighting was a nice touch.(Red Eye) Knowing most of the tech specs of the aircraft beforehand i was very impressed with the sheer size of it, and how smooth it was even in light turbulence. It was sooooo quiet and those RR Trent 1000's sounded pretty good spooling up. I would say it biggest drawback was that if you have to fly economy or econ+....good luck. It is so tight and squeezed you can't even stand up straight in your seat without this awkward bend at the knees. The bathrooms were surprisingly big as well as the isle's but man is it tight. I regret not paying the $74USD for an upgrade.

    I flew with the Aeromexico 787-9 from Madrid to Mexico and back, and indeed the plane is quiet and the air quality is better than - for example - in the 767 or the A330...but that is not sufficient for me as passenger. The seats are supplied by third-parties such as Ricardo, Lear, etc., Boeing/Airbus don't make them. It's possible to have the same-exact seats you see here on an A350. The Airline company orders seating and cabin features separately. For the 787, an airline has to negotiate pricing with Boeing, the engine supplier (GE or RR), and other smaller suppliers (such as the seat suppliers).
