    You spend a lot of time talking about the lack of an app, as if that’s a bad thing. On the contrary, for the majority of the population, the ability to use the station without an app, is not only a huge positive feature, but it’s a requirement. There are a number of things that still need to happen in order to reach high percentages of EV adoption in this country, and charging stations that “just work” is one of them. Having to download a dozen different apps, with abysmal UIs, and hoping that they work when you need them, is the epitome of poor user experience. A simple card reader and an outlet selection screen, or better yet, buttons, is a far superior experience. I’m glad Ionna has figured that out. I hope the other charging networks do as well. I’ve been an EV owner since 2019, currently own two EVs, and will be an all EV household as soon as some manufacturer releases a usable mid-size EV pickup.

    • @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney
      @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney  3 дня назад +8

      Right. There are EV charging sites that are "EV charging ONLY". Those sites usually have many parking spaces - hundreds in fact, so the ICE cars have plenty of other parking options. But in a convenience store location, like Sheetz, there are only a couple dozen parking spaces, so the EV charging spaces aren't used exclusively for EV charging.

    One downside of having canopies put over stations - it makes it more likely that combustion vehicles will use those spots for the shelter. But it's probably best to just be patient as mentioned, maybe if the spots are further away from the store it'll balance out shelter vs. speed to get into the facility.

Only problem is you'd have to have someone reviewing tape to issue the tickets. Unless you can use some kind of AI to look at the spot and monitor if the space is using charging.
      Same goes for charging idle fees at a busy station, you get a grace period of like 5 minutes at $1/m or something. But then it really ramps up after that like $3/m after 5 minutes and $5/m after 10 minutes. Up to a maximum of like $100 or something. Don't want to financially wreck someone because of some unforeseen circumstance or emergency.

      @@InitialT-tm- That would be fantastic, and at the same time nearly impossible to cover. Tesla alone averages opening at least a couple of mid-size sites per week, and they're usually installing 12 or more of all V4 stalls per site now. Then you have EA now partening with Costco who doesn't mess around with small stall counts. You also have the Flying J sites openings all over. And now IONNA has entered the mix.
      I would say that at least 3 to 4 mid-size charging sites open up every week in America alone. Along with an occasional huge site from Tesla. How can anyone possibly cover all that? On top of it getting boring real fast with that many per week. EV’s and the supporting infrastructure are in their nascent stage of “life.” Not unlike in the early 1900’s when automobiles were just coming into existence and replacing horses and buggies. When purchasing an EV too many people want to jump in and act as though they’re just switching gas for electric, and get on with life as they knew it. It’s gonna be awhile until EV’s and the infrastructure are robust enough to satisfy the “average” driver. Until then, I’m OK being unusual as an EV owner, and loving my Lightning and learning more about EV’s each week that I drive it.

      re: "Worked as it should I6 40% to 80% in under 20min without preparing the battery." well of course it's NEW, and understandably everything works great when new. however same as all the pre-existing EA, EVGO, Chargepoint (and other random DCFC names) already connected to the grid and in the ground, the REAL TEST comes when you go back there to charge 1, 2, and 3 years from now. yeah, will you have a "Supercharger-like" experience...? or (ironically also like Tesla) will you go there only to discover that the World's Newest Ionna DCFC Support Team has been told... "YOU'RE FIRED...!!!" (best deranged Elon/Trump mashup)

    Once the canopies are installed, those spots will be "premium" parking and ICE vehicle blocking will have a significant impact. As others noted, try parking in front of a diesel pump to use the convenience store; ICE pickup drivers will not patiently wait for you to leave. The other aspect to "patiently waiting" for an ICE vehicle to leave the charger is that typical charger setups do not have an obvious "who is next" if multiple people are waiting.

    I’ve lived in NJ the vast majority of my life, don’t really like Wawa or QuickCheck, but I do like Sheetz when visiting family in Pennsylvania. They partner with Tesla and ElectrifyAmerica at two different Sheetz in State College, PA - both worked great. I also like the GM Ultium site at the Pilot/FlyingJ on 81/78.

    Existing convenience stores have got to be a huge opportunity for charge locations. For the time being most people needing a charge are going to be waiting there for 20 to 40 minutes. That's going to be really significant opportunity to sell more merchandise, otherwise most customers spend like four or five minutes there. These companies rack their brains for ways to increase consumer dwell time by 20-30%. This is an opportunity to increase it by 400 - 500%.

    So far I like their business model to always setup in good locations that are well lit and have some sort of amenities. That is my one beef with Tesla. I personally haven't been to many Tesla sites where I didn't have access to a restroom or food options but I have seen plenty of road trip videos where that is a fact. So the more we have sites setup in places like this the better. I live here in Virginia and very familiar with Sheetz. It's a decent place for convenience and a quick made to order kiosk. And their prices are reasonable.

    VERY early days and too soon to tell, but if IONNA is successful, it will be interesting to see if and how it impacts Electrify America. I wonder if IONNA could eventually spell the death knell for Electrify America, primarily based on reliability and ease of use. It remains totally baffling why Electrify America cannot manage to get its act together no matter what assurances they always seem to give you during your interviews with them, Tom.

    Pre-authorizing $50 or more can be a turn off when choosing a network. Tesla in MN will pre-charge $20, which is fine. Circle K pre-charges $50 each time which can add up quickly if you have to stop at more than one site per day when traveling. $75 is ridiculous.

    • @StateOfChargeWithTomMoloughney

      Gas pumps aren't located in regular parking spaces that were repurposed for EV charging as is the case in these convenience stores that add EV chargers. Gas pumps aren't "parking spots"; there's no painted lines or handicap dedicated spaces. That said, sure, if someone parked an EV in front of a gas pump and walked into the store to use the restroom or buy something, I doubt anyone would say anything.
