- Having not done a kitchen table taste test for quite a while we figured it was time, so here we are with a vegan cheeze spread taste test and review, with a bonus block tasting thrown in for good measure.
We're trying Cathedral City vegan spread, Philadelphia vegan spread, Tesco own brand vegan garlic and herb spread, Sainsbury's own brand vegan garlic and herb spread, a recent vermondo purchase from Lidl and the new Violife block, Cheddarton.

Aww, I like how Jason is always trying to see positive points to things, even if he is not that keen!
Smoked vegan cheeses are the easiest "transition cheese" from dairy, in my opinion - for example the applewood one
Good call
Applewood is my favourite ..its gorgeous .
Interesting. I never liked smoked cheese. I did what Paul suggested and took a break ☺️ now I've found quite a few that I like
Holland and Barrett are now doing their own artisan vegan cheese. Today they had Brie, blue and a soft garlic and pepper spread.
Our local has stopped doing all foods etc
@@ThoseVeganGuysall stores should be reintroducing chiller foods relatively soon. My friend works in H&B and she was telling me last month that Head Office have realised what a mistake they made in dropping the food; footfall has been consistently down across most stores and feedback from customers was because there was no food to drop in for. Therefore they weren't also going on to buy extras like vitamins etc while they were there. No plans to bring freezers back yet, but there will be a range of chilled food. They'd better bring the sausage roll back; that was a lunchtime treat for me for about 25 years!
I love Paul chasing crumbs off the table. I do the same (my husband calls me “The Crumb Police”, and I’m okay with it). Somebody’s got to do it!😂
Phillidephia is supposed to be quite bland as you can use it in sweet dishes such as cheesecake too so maybe that's what they were aiming for? Love your taste tests 😊
That's right. And on a very flavored bagel such as cinnamon or everything I prefer a plain cream cheese
"Underwhelming" was the word you were sesrching for, Paul!
The plant based Boursin is lovely, I buy it in Asda x
I be interested to see what you do with them Paul, good point about coconut based Jason, as for me that a no. I would like a non coconut one, that grates ❤ Thank you
Ha! Loved how Paul innocently snatched Jason's sniff at the beginning. Deb took this vlog to 'posh' level and drank wine whilst you both tasted cheese 🧀🍷
Class. X
The Boursin garlic and herb cheeze spread is my favourite!
I love Nush cream "cheese" chive flavour, that is my best I found so far. Love u guys
Love the Cathedral city vegan cheese block, you're right about the tingle I had forgotten about that aspect of eating cheese.
Love me a garlic flavoured cheese, I bought the cheddarton the other day its very nice, I melted some into some pasta and it worked very well and was really nice, it was pesto spaghetti, I veganised it by replacing the parmesan with cheddarton.
Doing a service for us lovely folk!! ☺️ thanks guys 💚 X
Very disappointed to hear that the Cathedral City wasn’t great, you expect it from the name! I was never a massive fan of cream cheese to fair but the Sainsbury’s garlic & herb might be one to try if I ever feel the urge 😂
Same on all counts. Not something we get regularly but all at interesting to try them. X
So weird the Vemondo stuff is only around for a week, you wouldn't think it was worth them printing packaging for something that short-lived! I got a tub of it earlier this week, will try to get some more if there's any left. Price was really good for this kind of thing.
Its a shame that Sheese isnt widely available in supermarkets. I love their cheddar style spread - its quite strong - so I use it in quiches, along with the Cathedral City block.
I seem to remember Morrison's cream cheese alternative being quite good, too, but I've not had it in ages.
Thanks for this, guys. Its like sitting around the table with mates. 😊
PS. I believe Honestly Tasty is available in some M&S's now - quite pricey - but nice as a treat - at Christmas, say. Their Blue blew me away.
Philly cheese is normally a back up to chutney or pineapple, cucumber etc. Def lovely with a pesto and pasta!
I find the violife cream cheese is very much like how it would taste, I find a lot of the hard cheese variations harder to eat. Great video, love seeing these kind it helps us new vegans a lot
I really like the vegan babybel, I find it very similar to the original (as far as I remember). I must have tried just about every vegan cheese going, I missed cheese the most when I first switched from veggie to vegan. I've got about 4 that I buy on a regular basis. It's exciting when famous brands at least try. Not tried Primula or Laughing Cow yet, so on the look out! X
This is great guys! Appreciate your incite!! I feel you on the coconut based cheeses for sure, not a fan but alot of them are made with it. I've noticed almond based ones do taste better. ❤ Vegan cheese in general does take a bit of getting used to, it's not as creamy as dairy cheese, but for me the pros out weigh the cons. When you know why you're doing it.
Good advice about getting cold turkey with cheese when going vegan. When I was vegetarian I lived on cheese so I abstained for 6 months x
I think we'd all agree that giving up cheese was the hardest part of transitioning from omni/veggie to vegan.
One of my favourite pasta sauces to make is frying finely diced onion in olive oil with tons of garlic and broccoli until al dente; add a knob of butter, a carton of Elmlea plant based cream, salt, pepper and a load of nooch, a ladle of pasta water and toss it though spaghetti. It’s amazing.
You don’t need to add the broccoli of course, you can add tons of mushrooms to the mix or La vie bacon to make a carbonara. Xx
That sounds lovely hmm shall def try that one
@@alithevegancatlady74 It’s delicious and it’s vegan cheese free. Xx
thank you also, that you confirmed my own sensory points on what you notice in that range of products. It confirmed that it is not only me who noticed those.
Yes, to more taste tests!
More to come!
I’d be curious to know what the Philadelphia would taste like with fresh herbs mixed through it. Should give a nice creaminess to pasta I imagine. Thanks again for the lovely video. Always love to catch up with you lovely guys 😊
Hey Bith, thanks for the informative info, I have had tried the same cheezes and agree with you 😁
I love Paul’s honesty 😂 I felt the same about cathedral city soft cheese, I expecting to love it like I love the cheese but I was underwhelmed
I actually love the Philadelphia version would you believe? However, I live in Ireland & the only alternative is the Violife soft cheese which is solid, snow white & just absolutely tasteless! BY FAR the Sheese is the best soft cheese but getting it over here is slim to none ❤️
I don't like the Vivolife spread cheeses either, tasteless or a taste like plastic Imho
@@saschathinius7082 it’s VILE, isn’t it? It’s so so white & literally tastes as though you’re eating a solid white block of coconut fat 🤢🤢🤢
Great vlog you guys. I had the Violife Chedderton on some tomato pasta this week and melted beautifully. I prefer the Epic from viollife as it's got s stronger flavour. I will definitely take your advice and get the cream cheese, the Tesso's version is pretty (ump!!)
So funny I was tasting these today to try and find one I like and can eat lol
Brilliant taste test - thank you so much. I've only tried the Philadelphia one which I thoroughly enjoyed but I do have rather bland, beige taste buds (no way would I cope with your hot sauces). After your tasting today I would really like to try the Lidl spread so sad to hear it won't be a regular item in store.
Absolutely love it
Excellent advice for vegan newbies 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I do love me some cream cheese topped with jam or jelly. Very tasty!
Used to love dairylea and jam.
Great stuff you guys!! Could the Philadelphia be used for things like cheesecake and similar recipes?
Also Paul, it took me 3 quarters of the video to realize you're wearing a bracelet, and don't have a pin needle sticking out of your onderarm.... lol!
LOL
So exciting with these products coming out!
i really enjoyed the lidl spread and demolished it as a pate style situation. the mexican one was nice ,had a kick .
Interesting feedback. My fave is the Sheeze spread with garlic and herb and also the sweet chilli one is good.
hmm, you guys will have alot of cheesy spreading, after opening them all 😂... thanks for the test!
Good idea for a taste test. From what I remember, I like the sainsburys one the best. I know what you mean about cathedral city and the tingle from dairy! So weird. 😂
Nurrish does a good garlic cheesy spread. The Boursin one if foul though.
Have you tried the Kinda Co. Cheeses? There are some really good reviews of their smoked and farmhouse.
We haven't, are they an online thing? Never heard of them actually.
Love this. Missed you - looking great!
Agree btw on ur comment of goin cold turkey ..i did that afew months n tried again .i used to eat violife occasionally but without a doubt ..
Recently found you and going back to watch your videos. Fun one and educational. We can’t get many of those in the US but fun to watch and learn. ❤
Welcome aboard!
Ooooh will have to see if we can find some of that Lidl spread - never found any good cream cheese alternatives before - thanks for the review :)
Like the Philly with marmite on toast, gives it a nice savoury twist.
Agree about the Sainsbury’s garlic and herb, definitely the best.
Now, .. we’re in Crete at the moment, and I long for a bit of vegan cheese… argh send over your leftovers 😂
Video on the blocks/grated taste and melting ability please ❤
We've done a few already on the channel. Check the taste tests playlist. X
My fave is applewood vegan and the one ive seen you with mouse cheeze ..our plastic free shop has stopped stockin that ..gutted but so good ..i have the spread from lidl too..cant wait to try it
I felt vicarious enjoyment--and disappointment--right along with your reactions, but oh how wonderful to see the cheesy possibilities! The Korean Vegan's podcast from a couple of months ago featured a California company using AI to make a small selection of vegan cheeses that are almost exact replicas of the dairy ones. I imagine the UK market would be among the first for distribution of their products. Thanks for posting!
Just seen that cathedral city have released 2 new vegan cheeses and thought of this video. I agree with you on the one you tried here, it was a bit bland. The new spreadable is supposed to be mature cheddar flavour so hopefully that will be a lot better. There is also an extra mature block, both only available at Sainsbury's at the moment I think.
The cc mature cheese spread is amazing - best I’ve tried yet. Found it this week at sainsburys. Have the extra mature block too but haven’t tried yet.
Great video guys. Have you done a Beyond/Impossible/Sainsburys/Tesco etc burger comparison? Meatless Farm which recently went bust but were bought by VFC (yay) had the best burgers in the UK IMO so might be worth waiting until they're back on the market... Anyways a genuine burger comparison from what's going in't yookay is what we want :)
I love you two 😊
I use soft cheese to make pasta sauce 😊
So do we as you'll see in tonight's meals vlog
Thanks for the reviews guys. Saved me a trip for philly but might have to pop into lidl now on the off chance! X
You should!
Morrisons sell primula reckon you would find that flavoursome paul😂
With Vivolife block cheese products, i found out that they kind of ripen in the packaging... and become better the more they reach the date of use. especially the Feta Block is imho benefiting from maturing... just my opinion... not realy related to this test... but I wanted to share my thoughts
You looked a bit cheesed off with the first two (pun intended)
cathedral city is a normal dairy cow cheese brand. So I think it’s probably a good thing they don’t like that cheese.
LOL
Love it
I used to love Philadelphia when i was a kid, so i was super excited when they announced the vegan version last year. I was completely underwhelmed by it. Admittedly, I hadnt eaten it for 31 years, but I was expecting there to be a bit of that unmistakable Philly taste... There was nothing. It was ok, but i won't rush out to buy it again.
Interesting you both preferred Sainsbury's... It's made by Bute Island, makers of Scheese (showing my age there, i think it's Sheese now 😂); the original vegan cheese, and still the best for me. They used to make the Tesco cheese too, but I believe it's since changed. Their cheddar style spread was top notch.
Not a fan of Violife; not much flavour, and the texture is horrible. It's like eating a slice of a powerball (one for the 80's kids there!!) 😂
Oohh that cathedral city spready cheeze is delicious. Nush is my fave but you can only get it at ocado and waitrose now 😔😒 tut
great review, i tried a lidl margheritta vegan pizza tonight very nice! good sauce and herbs, not sure if just for veganuary. have u tried or seen them? @ thoseveganguys got other half in fridge defrosted so ill have it 2moro for dinner. keep warm n dry
Did you miss our big LIdl vlog in which we showed them? Trying ourselves soon too. We bought a double and a single pack
no i watched it , but i didnt get that veg one or tried it, i got the plain just cheese one.. which very good and good price. not tried the mini bolognese ones yet @@ThoseVeganGuys
I have to say I am disappointed in the Philly spread, pre vegan i liked their dairy version. We wouldn’t get any of the others where we live but it was an interesting taste test vlog.
Iv had the philli plenty of times on buttys with vegan salami etc, i think it tastes pretty good and just mild enough. Iv always had strong sensitivity to smells and tastes so if im having something strong like vegan pastrami philli complements it well. But each to their own, i have tried most supermarket options and never liked the consistency or flavour.
It worked well in a pasta sauce
I remember enjoying the Violife cheese spread (although I haven't looked for a while) - could you only find the block?
The block we just added as it was new. And we limited how many we were going to try. It'll be in a future one
..every time it happens...i just love watching the duck & focus(📹 )game...gives me a giggle
enjoy y'all's taste test videos...i particularly enjoy nuurish cream cheese ..or trader joe's.. haven't been able to buy/try the Philadelphia one even though we live in pennsylvania 🤷..i've often added V cream cheeses to creamed soups and veggie casseroles..i truly was excited for y'all to try the chedderton..(😔) as a couple of christmases ago i found the Vio Life epic mature cheddar and it was EXACTLY that tingly "pins & needles" feeling i had missed from aged cheese...
☮️&🌱's
The epic is fabulous
@@ThoseVeganGuys ..it absolutely is...sad🥺 i've never found it in a store nearby again

Fabulous review, would love to see more, it would also be fun to see recipes with the leftover cheeses! 💚🌿 Btw, Will you gentlemen be doing a live this weekend? 🥰
Not this week but the lives will be back
Love your reviews ❤
Glad you like them!
Hi guys, glad you said the philadelphia was tasteless. l found it bland too! The best brand l have tasted that exceeds my expectations is the sheese brand. It tasted exactly like philadelphia, if not better! Sadly l do not see this brand often in the supermarkets, but know there have loads of choice to purchase on their website.
Njoyed the cheese taste test !! I agree about coconut being a bit overpowering in some cheeses.. im going to have a go at making my own cheese i reckon i cld get some good flavour that way xx❤❤❤
Have a look at Connie’s Rawsome Kitchen channel. She’s made a lot of home made cheese with all kinds of bases
We made some on a live not too long ago. Feta and ricotta. Both nice.
I used to love Dairylea triangles growing up! Not yet found a vegan cream cheese that's hit the spot. I wonder if you could mix in some nooch with one of the blander cheeses to make it a bit cheesier?
Try the new cathedral city plant based mature cheese spread. I just found it this week at Sainsburys and it’s life changing.
Not tried the Philadelphia yet, would it be good in a cheesecake?
Yes, and carrot cake frosting. Sweetened it would be perfect
My favourite is Still tofutti cream cheese (North America). Can't try the sainsbury, tesco, free form, vermondo, or cathedral, as I still can't get my grocers to order it, though they have non vegan cathedral, as I wrote before.
Tofutti better than cream cheese - I have been eating it since the late 80s and I wasn't vegan or even vegetarian then. I just liked it better. No coconut. The worst ingredient is palm oil. I don't know if it is the new palm oil from the non killer farming methods, or the killer kind. i should look into it.
Used to be able to get that here but not anymore
🫶
Absolutely brilliant video 😊thank you both, and for the advice about giving up dairy - it's my last step to vegan and will be a huge help. Your review was super helpful so I can try some tasty alternatives on my vegan journey 🧀😋🌱💚
Wonderful!
😍
I love the taste of Cathedral City but I can't stand the smell xx
Me too 😢
@@patriciamurtagh7998 😢😢
I obviously hate flavour 😂 absolutely couldn't stand that lidl vegan spread and the cathedral block and cheddarton are way way too cheesy for me. Husband loves them however. I just stick to violife original, like a bore 😅 Will give the sainsburys spread a go though 😊💚
🤗❤
Cool wee video! I sense a cream cheese give away coming up 😜
hi guys from sue
Hi Sue
