We all think, how could someone that beautiful ever have a bad day in their life or be sad? We have this vision in our heads of beautiful people having anything they want handed to them, every wish granted without having to lift a finger. That they coast through life with a trail of fairy dust behind them and are never wanting for love and attention and companionship. Obviously that isn’t true to reality, but it’s still kind of a subconscious, knee-jerk assumption. So I think it was really hard for Marilyn to be taken seriously, even with her talent being evident.

Nobody says that. Who says she can't act, Ive never heard it. You can't become a star as big as her without being a good actress. And she was. There were plenty of pretty blonde girls in Hollywood I'm sure, not every one of them made it to the top for a reason. Because you have to be able to act and have star charisma on top.

This is the first movie I ever saw her in and it blew me away! I had always seen all the glamorous images of her and clips from her comedies, but from seeing this film on out I knew she was way more than that, she is so emotive!! Marilyn could really really act.

I'll never forget my sister's words when I convinced her to watch Niagara with me. She said, amongst other things,, "I know it's almost a cliched thing to say about Marilyn now but it's a travesty that she wasn't given more roles like this . She's as good if not better than Meryl Streep in this role, particularly since she conveys so much about her character via body language alone". I remember this so well, because my sister died a tragic death not long after, in December 2020. She was so insightful and watching Niagara was one of the last things we did together - and it's always so much fun bonding over somebody like Marilyn with somebody you love, who appreciates her as much as you do. This film alone proves that Marilyn Monroe was a viable excellent actress. The first time I saw this I was stunned by how well she played this part. Dumb blonde? Not here. I think had she lived, and sought some help, she would've excelled even more. She just needed to have the directors depend on her & not worry whether she'd show up or not. FYI -- The father of the child Marilyn babysat in this film was Jim Backus (Mr. Magoo & Mr. Howell on Gilligan's Island). After this, she became more well-known for her great comedic roles = but she was adept at both comedy (she excelled in comedy) and drama. This movie is a tad uneven but Anne Bancroft said that Marilyn showed true vulnerability and was wonderful (and Anne Bancroft is considered a really talented all-time great actress) in their scenes together.

One of my favorite characters of hers : she played Nell with so much empathy. It's the way she portrayed that invisible wall or veil between yourself and others that you feel is there when you are in crisis. Look at her character: she's crying , walking around publicly in turmoil, ready to give up and yet she is completely unnoticed by the people passing her by. It's a crazy thing. That you can be stood next to someone who is on the edge of that Cliff in their minds and never know it. . She is totally alone and marilyn portrays that sense of being totally alone so clearly. That hopelessness. That feeling like you can't find the way out, the sense that nobody Is going to help you ," my life is over, so why not just give up. ? " then the back and forth of having or not having the courage to go through with giving up and the turmoil that brings. It's only when she pulls out the razor blade that suddenly everyone sees her. It's the characters lowest, most vulnerable moment and this is what it takes to get people to notice you. The stigma that you have to be at your worst to receive help. She was gifted with the sensitivity to be able to show that to an audience, the audience actually accepts it and understands it which is so unusual. Its hard to get others to see a different perspective and yet she bought it to the masses. Now we are able to empathise with Nell. She doesn't seem so "crazy", doesnt need to be restrained ...she just needed to be treated gently and with empathy when they take her to get the help she needs. You get the sense Marilyn knows these feelings very well..
Marilyn was so great in this movie, but can we talk about ANNE BANCROFT?!?!? This was her very first movie and she was amazing! She was given a small-ish role, but stole the scenes she was in 😍
Recently, our family office had an interior redo to accommodate my newly-licensed niece who has interior decorating skills. When she asked me if there was anything I wanted done or added to my space, I told her that besides a small aquarium, I wanted some b&w Marilyn Monroe art on my wall. I wish more people knew this Marilyn or the Marilyn who possessed real acting talent and less of her dvmb blonde/s3x symbol personae.
Very emotional watching Monroe's portrayal. Truly captivating as a disturbed and unhinged individual. After watching Blonde movie played by Ana De Armas, she played Monroe's role perfectly. Both it seemed mustered up such emotion, it was unbelievably touching and gripping. I have only seen Monroe in "Some Like It Hot" with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. I will be watching more of her films, as believe he was overlooked as an amazing actress. Thank you for this channel which just discovered.
They did this movie by filming just a one take, and they ( the director) leaved them in the film (because of the budget and timing) so, Marilyn is quite a good actress , she did not get a second chance in this film if she did not like how she performed it in first take. I have read multiply of her biography`s, and she was said to think that this was her best movie, and I agree, she is so special, so captivating and just, something.. She would have been great in dramas too. She was said to be so nervous that she vomit before the filming and then just did it. (Quite common for some actor and actresses, or actually anyone to react that way if they are very nervous ) Still, interesting. This one often gets overlooked, and regrettably so. It's a fab performance, lightyears from some of the more iconic, yet superficial, roles she'd have later. This was quite a revelation when I first saw it. DBTK has its moments, some of them inadvertently amusing. Love the elevator guy's reaction here; clearly wanting to be somewhere else and hoping she'd just get the hell out of his lift and become someone else's problem! 😆 Btw, I never saw razor blades for sale in a hotel lobby...
Watch MM in Bus stop’ the misfits etc , I feel given the stronger roles we would have seen more of MM great acting . She wasnt only beautiful, she could act, sing, dance, play the guitar and so much more and yet she was potrayed as a dumb blond. How unfair and cruel. If she had not died and had lived to this day, she would have known how appreciated and well loved she is today.

Marilyn was such a different character in this before her popularity. Later she'd only get work in roles similar to those that had made her famous and the studio money.
We know Marilyn suffered her entire life with times of happiness spread sporadically through her years.. Marilyn was a good actress. Worked hard for her career & commands our attention in every film she made. Such a beautiful woman. Sweet & talented.

Niagara and this movie were the films that showed that she was a talented actress, but her comedies as a dumb blonde were very funny so she was good at that too, so she was great as well as the most beautiful woman in the world.
She should have gotten an Oscar for this performance.

This was good acting imo. Her eyes expressions were telling and showing emotions and it was not over done.
This film alone proves that Marilyn Monroe was a viable excellent actress.
The first time I saw this I was stunned by how well she played this part. Dumb blonde? Not here. I think had she lived, and sought some help, she would've excelled even more.
She just needed to have the directors depend on her & not worry whether she'd show up or not.
FYI -- The father of the child Marilyn babysat in this film was Jim Backus (Mr. Magoo & Mr. Howell on Gilligan's Island). He was fortunate to play opposite 4 legends in his career -- Humphrey Bogart (Deadline USA), James Dean (Rebel Without a Cause), Marilyn Monroe (Don't Bother To Knock) & Elvis Presley (met EP at a formal dinner & a photograph exists of both of them online).

After this, she became more well-known for her great comedic roles = but she was adept at both comedy (she excelled in comedy) and drama. This movie is a tad uneven but Anne Bancroft said that Marilyn showed true vulnerability and was wonderful (and Anne Bancroft is considered a really talented all-time great actress) in their scenes together.

One of my favorite characters of hers : she played Nell with so much empathy. It's the way she portrayed that invisible wall or veil between yourself and others that you feel is there when you are in crisis. Look at her character: she's crying , walking around publicly in turmoil, ready to give up and yet she is completely unnoticed by the people passing her by. It's a crazy thing. That you can be stood next to someone who is on the edge of that Cliff in their minds and never know it. . She is totally alone and marilyn portrays that sense of being totally alone so clearly. That hopelessness. That feeling like you can't find the way out, the sense that nobody Is going to help you ," my life is over, so why not just give up. ? " then the back and forth of having or not having the courage to go through with giving up and the turmoil that brings. It's only when she pulls out the razor blade that suddenly everyone sees her. It's the characters lowest, most vulnerable moment and this is what it takes to get people to notice you. The stigma that you have to be at your worst to receive help. She was gifted with the sensitivity to be able to show that to an audience, the audience actually accepts it and understands it which is so unusual. Its hard to get others to see a different perspective and yet she bought it to the masses. Now we are able to empathise with Nell. She doesn't seem so "crazy", doesnt need to be restrained ...she just needed to be treated gently and with empathy when they take her to get the help she needs. You get the sense Marilyn knows these feelings very well..

Recently, our family office had an interior redo to accommodate my newly-licensed niece who has interior decorating skills. When she asked me if there was anything I wanted done or added to my space, I told her that besides a small aquarium, I wanted some b&w Marilyn Monroe art on my wall. Very emotional watching Monroe's portrayal. Truly captivating as a disturbed and unhinged individual. After watching Blonde movie played by Ana De Armas, she played Monroe's role perfectly. Both it seemed mustered up such emotion, it was unbelievably touching and gripping. I have only seen Monroe in "Some Like It Hot" with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. I will be watching more of her films, as believe he was overlooked as an amazing actress. Thank you for this channel which just discovered.

They did this movie by filming just a one take, and they ( the director) leaved them in the film (because of the budget and timing) so, Marilyn is quite a good actress , she did not get a second chance in this film if she did not like how she performed it in first take. I have read multiply of her biography`s, and she was said to think that this was her best movie, and I agree, she is so special, so captivating and just, something.. She would have been great in dramas too. She was said to be so nervous that she vomit before the filming and then just did it. (Quite common for some actor and actresses, or actually anyone to react that way if they are very nervous ) Still, interesting. Thank you for this amazing channel, this is by far the best Marilyn Monroe - channel , what I have watched :) I hope you understand my English, I really learn to write it better every day. Marilyn appealed both, men and women, every race, all ages, there was something in her that I do not even understand..you just want to watch her. One of a kind.

TBH, if Niagara was more successful than Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, she would be cast in more serious roles. Personally, I hope both are equally successful and they can cast her in both types of roles to show that she’s more than just a bombshell.

Co-star Anne Bancroft (then 'Anne Marno') spoke movingly of MM's 'after-mad-flipout' scene. When Anne's character reached out to her, it was so real - " just woman to woman."
This one often gets overlooked, and regrettably so. It's a fab performance, lightyears from some of the more iconic, yet superficial, roles she'd have later. This was quite a revelation when I first saw it.
DBTK has its moments, some of them inadvertently amusing. Love the elevator guy's reaction here; clearly wanting to be somewhere else and hoping she'd just get the hell out of his lift and become someone else's problem! 😆

Watch MM in Bus stop’ the misfits etc , I feel given the stronger roles we would have seen more of MM great acting . Sadly she was being drawn into to much exploitation ie initially to play MM over n over , yet I love her comedic acting & if she had lived longer we would of seen more of her acting skills .
