I actually sorta got Marcy’s death spoiled for me but this episode was such a rollercoaster that I forgot about it until she got stabbed and was like “OH YEAH SHE FRIGGIN DIES”
And Alex Hirsch isn’t far behind any of these shows. 😁 His own creation along with TOH and Amphibia as voice actor, storyboard artist, or occasional episode writer are notable.
“Look at Sprig I gave you this I gave you everything” is such an amazing line, delivery and written. Marcy is breaking down and she isn’t trying to convince everyone else she did the right thing, she’s convincing herself.
The reveal scene with Marcy is just… masterfully done. First off: Got to give props to Haley Tju for her voice acting. She really got to shine in this episode, in that scene in particular, and she did a phenomenal job. Second: The animation in the scene, the expressions but also the lighting and coloring, were just so good. And it’s interesting when you go back and think about it. While Marcy was generally nice and sweet, how she interacted with the world of Amphibia was always a little off. Because she treats it like escapism, like it’s one of her RPGs that she can’t get hurt in. She even refers to Sprig and the Plantars as things she gave Anne, which, honey, that’s not how any of that works. It’s easy to forget that these kids are 13. Also, a scene I want to talk about is Anne’s Calamity Power scene. I love how fluid the animation is and the slowed down instrumental of No Big Deal. It’s really such an awesome scene.
@@harrybechtle4333 I think that’s the point of the scene at first glance it sounds like she’s referring to them in general but if you actually think about it you realize she meant the friendship which would explain Anne and sprigs expression honestly an amazing scene
I agree with you guys. It is clear that Marcy doesn't view plantars as "things". She literally cried when Spid was thrown off the window. I don't think she ever shown any sign that she views them as things or parts of a "game".
@@Chris-kh6nv she definitely treats like a welcome escape from the human world. Like literally one of the first things she says to anne in Marcy At The Gates, in reference to the plantars is "I love the found family trope!" As this is just a fantasy book or an RPG. We see her treating the puzzles (at least in the beginning) more like levels on a game, and even here in true colours, we see her saying "Almost makes you wish it could last forever". She was the least shocked with amphibia, and she seemed almost excited to be there, which is different to anne and sasha.
She-Ra: Catra: you promise? Adora: I promise. *fast forward* Catra: I'm sorry! For everything! Amphibia: Anne: I just got you back and I dont want to loose you again! Marcy: you won't, I promise. *fast forward* Marcy: I'm sorry... for everything... The owl house: Luz: ok mum, I promise. *GUYS I'M SCARED* Edit: well how do we feel about the finale guys?
It's... disconcerting to see how, in the end, the only one who didn't take Amphibia as an RPG or a playground was, in fact, Anne Edit: Reading the leaked Journal... Yep Marcy saw every newt as an NPC
I mean, it took Andrias stabbing Marcy through the chest and Anne getting her powers for both Marcy and Sasha to see that their actions had consequences and that they weren't in some kind of fantasy world
In general I'm more of an Owl House fan than Amphibia, but this episode is #@$*ing brilliant. Kudos to the animation team and also to Brenda Song for the voice work on the "Give him back" scene. I never would have guessed London Tipton would ever deliver such an intense moment.
Tbh after day of the aquarium most s2 episodes didn't do it for me but as soon as the Third temple The Dinner Battle of the bands True colours Made me reinvested and more interested than i am in the owl house tbh
It's definitely good to see shows taking their underage viewers more seriously today than in the past. Because let's be real, kids have emotional depth too, and some of them probably have had family members die or betray them, so I'm sure a lot of them can relate to Marcy trying to do the right thing but ultimately getting backstabbed (literally) in the end. For me, I think the pain of True Colors will make the series finale that much better, because everyone will have to overcome a lot of personal and physical barriers to save the day, and that'll be epic to watch :D Let's just hope Marcy gets there in one piece!!!
"This is Disney you can't do that shit". Need I remind you of Mufasa, Bambi's Mom, Ray the Firefly, Tadashi, Sitka from Brother Bear? I've got pages of these, I could go on.
I think she was talking about Modern Disney. Disney back in the day would go as far as death of a big character to show drama, grief and sadness. But nowadays, Disney is more strict. Example is how True Colors was supposed to air on May 1st and got pushed back to May 22nd, likely due to Marcy's death and Matt negotiating with the execs about showing the episode despite Marcy's death.
@@startrooper6910 In all honesty it doesn't make a difference. Disney has never shyed away from the concept of death or in Marcy's case near-death before and it won't be the last. That's what makes these stories so impactful because Disney isn't afraid to be real when it has to.
The best thing about Keith David being the king is that he can change so easily from good guy to bad guy. He's been in Disney a lot since the 90s and played good guys and bad.
Marcy's heavily coded as someone on the spectrum, and is shown to struggle connecting with new people, so knowing she did all of this in order to live out her fantasy and never lose the few people she has, utterly heartbreaking. I'm also a big Marcanne shipper, so the extra layer of angst is excellent.
No but Luz was coded that way tho. It’s funny how no one thought Luz was on the spectrum but Marcy was. Edit; I personally see Marcy’s social awkwardness as more introverted than anything. I don’t think social awkwardness equals autism, plus I’m a bit of an introvert myself so I know.
I love watching people react to the end of this episode, it never fails to leave people dumbstruck. It is such a bold way to end the season, as if Matt and the crew look you in the eye like "Yeah, that's how this shit ends. Sit with THAT for a few months" I love it.
Fun fact, that warning in the beginning (and probably the sneak peak to the season 3 intro where we see Marcy isn't full dead) had to be added for this episode to be allowed. Also likely the reason there was a bunch of trouble with the episode originally being scheduled for a certain date, getting delayed, and then that opening a window for leaks to get out, unfortunately.
Crackpot theory time: Given Anne sprouting small twigs when she got infused with the gems power, and the Moss-creatures we have seen in the past also having those twigs. I think that the moss creatures are previous humans, who were connected to the stones, and then kept here. One fled into the wild, another tied up in the castle. On another note, I do NOT blame Marcy at all in the human world. If this human world is normal there is NO reason to assume a random box would posess actual magic, for all Marcy knew it was a prop/toy/merch from whatever story had that book. She COULD have said she had read about it, but noone would have believed her, since the world is normal. However, in Amphibia yes, she had ample oppertunity to tell everyone what she knew, so from that point it was being dishonest with her friends.
Marcy probably didn't explain the true power of the box to Anne and Sasha though, from what King Andrias said at 19:10 Edit: love the theory about previous humans in Amphibia tho 👌
Plus i love how she says “It’s Disney u can’t do that” basically killing off people when literally Disney is known for killing people especially the protagonists parents 💀
Yeah but not a protagonist’s friend being brutally impaled. Usually people die offscreen or it’s implied via the use of shadows (ex. Scar’s demise in The Lion King). Here we actually saw the blade protruding from Marcy’s chest.
I think it's a case of how long term branding, what TVTropes calls: animation age ghetto, and other means of expectations & psychological thinking that we assume anything under 'Disney' name has these limits from certain extremes and imagery. This thinking is actual what makes them so even more effectively hit when such expectations are challenged or shattered. We have our guard down and can't consider/imagine being prepared thus Disney can hit harder then many other horror, tragic, or other extremes stories or experiences. But 'Disney' has made very effective Horror, has made tragedies where the good or neutral protagonists suffer a fate worse then death, and has been on the line or crossed it and we don't see it coming thus hits us like a ton of invisible bricks. Granted it's not often but like when a character on some show that never swears when he or she finally does and ever other characters are shocked it can be serous business and more effective tone & power behind it.
This is actually an edited version of this episode. The original version had no warning at the beginning and there was no season 3 intro reveal at the end. The rest of the episode is exactly the same. The original version was not allowed to air by Disney, so they delayed the episode for 4 weeks. However, the original version was leaked on iTunes, which is where I watch this series. I didn't know about the delay and it leaked on the original air date as well, so I watched the episode not knowing it was leaked. The people that watched this edited version are actually very lucky that the season 3 intro was added. I spend 4 weeks thinking Marcy was really dead.
The episode where anne hallucinates with blue hair was meant to foreshadow her calamity powers. You will not believe how shocked we all were when we saw the ending. It's always cool to this such a great episode through another blind reaction. The whole episode is just a rollercoaster.
@@lycheedoesspam if you think again Mint's color usually are green, which is Marcy's iconic color. So I think Sasha's favorite are Strawberry while Anne's was blueberry
What I find particularly amazing about the scene with Anne's powers is actually the soundtrack. It's slowed down, but you can hear that it has the 'no big deal' motif. If you look for it, you can find the same tune sprinkled throughout the entire soundtrack
Disney Channel sure provided a disclaimer warning when this episode first aired. I think it said something like “some scenes may be too intense for younger audiences.” And all of that was said by Sprig himself.
That action scene is the best choreographed and animated I've ever seen. Amazing. I'm crying with you. Already started crying with the Sprig and the build up with her powers, and that whole scene. Insanity how good it is! Thank you for your great reaction.
There was a last minute scramble, Disney postponed the original airing of this episode at the last minute then delayed for a couple of weeks. Finally they added the warning and decided to air the new intro that showed Marcy in the tank. Disney was really stupid because they had to have known at least a year ahead of time how this episode was planned to end.
I’m glad they included it cuz if Marcy was actually dead then that the episode should end that way. But if she was going to survive, then I wouldn’t want to wait a full season thinking she’s dead and then be told she she’s not dead yet. I’d feel kinda upset that I got jebaited.
They had a dealy on the episode because of the whole, stabbing thing. The higher-ups did not want them to include it. The warning at the start of the episode, and showing season three's intro early showing Marcy at least not fully dead was the compromise for getting it out.
Ugh disney needs to accept more mature stuff amphibia isn't even a show for 5 years olds it's pretty much 9-any age really and 9 years olds could easily recognise it's just the way the plot is going and they could've been so excited without the intro
" DID THEY JUST KILL HER?" " THIS IS DISNEY, YOU CAN"T DO THAT SHIT!" lol Btw, I think you should react to the trailers before S3 airs, there's a little surprise with Marcy.
THERE ARE TRAILERS! we get to see more about marcy and how she is, along with sasha in wartwood and anne back home! i would LOVE to see your reaction to it, but i understand you can’t record your reactions to EVERYTHING dkskdjsh
Keith David sure made his mark with Disney in the last decade with great performances. From the trickster Dr. Facilier to the eccentrically wise Glossryck, now the ruthless King Andrias.
@@OnyxheartWolf Technically speaking, he’s been on a roll in the last decade after being away from Disney since 1994’s Gargoyles. These roles are his comeback to Disney in so long.
My favorite scenes would have to be Marcy’s reveal scene because of how realistic it felt and also Anne going super power mode just because she keeps saying “Give him back,” which is really sad and tragic
Amphibia just does things right when it comes to emotional and tense scenes, I was on the edge of my seat during Marcy’s breakdown, and I sobbed for like five minutes after the episode ended, the writing that goes into this show genuinely makes me so happy that it exists
Since you've probably watched "The First Temple", I'm just going to comment that I think those red things in the hidden tapestry are the Night's (creepy mechanical creature shown at the end of The First Temple) eyes. I absolutely loved your reaction to this episode and I could see the heartbreak in your eyes when Marcy "temporarily" died. And thankfully, she's not dead. But she's in Andrias' hands.
On the note of "The First Temple" I'm gonna piggyback on this to point out that the message for Marcy at the end of the episode has a payoff here: "A *sacrifice* was made to *save your friends* , when you think about it doesn't that make *you the winner in the end* ?" -Temple of Wit
@@infitomes7035 I have a thought that I despise having. It's related to the temple's message and it's about Marcy sacrificing herself to defeat the Night and give her friends a chance of winning the Amphibian war. You may also have been implying that. Honestly, I really hope that doesn't happen. I hope Marcy can be with her friends.
@@startrooper6910 Marcy will try to sacrifice herself when alone, thinking she has nobody left, but then her friends will come to stop her. She's in parallel to Andreas, who lost his friends and fell down a bad rabbit hole to evil. The difference here being that her friends are strong enough to not fail in addition to not giving up on her. Andreas is the representation of the gem of heart from his trinity, but lost his heart after he thought he lost his friends, signified by the x mark over his heart on his armor. He embodies the lesson of the temple, responsibility, but has no moral compass to guide his choices anymore. This is to be restored because he does care about Marcy, and she'll be the gateway to his redemption. (The big bad will supercede him as the main villain when that happens) I imagine that his friends didn't stop caring about him, but the frog got trapped in the human world, and the toad (Beryl?) was accused of taking the box and split because of that, which lead to the war between newts and toads. At least that's all my theory based on foreshadowing and feasible writing techniques.
@@infitomes7035 I very much agree with you. Marcy may think that she has no reason to fight anymore and that her sacrifice could aid her friends in some way and maybe Anne, Sasha and their friends, along with a possibly reformed Andrias will help her overcome those bad thoughts. I think, although Andrias would be pretty happy to use Marcy as a vessel for his lord, he'll soon understand her situation and will sympathize with her.
Fav moments: Reality the entire episode is a fav moment. Anne's power up, the battle, the music, the emotions. Marcy death Andrias backstory Season 3 op Etc
It really says something that the episode that involved cannibals that Anne pretty much killed by blowing them up was viewed as completely "Ok" by Disney but the one where a main character gets stabbed was viewed as too violent. Not sure what it says but it does say something.
16:54 Actually, I don't think that's it. I think that frogs represent the blue heart, newts represent the green brain and toads represent the pink strength. Which is why Anne was sent to Wartwood, Marcy was sent to Newtopia and Sasha was sent to Toad Tower.
I don't think that's how it always was, just how that society developed. Andrias is a blue newt with a red/pink frog and a green toad. I feel Andrias got to his current meglomanic state because his friends betrayed him and it ate at him. It's kinda a reflection of what Anne could become if she lets the betrayals of Sasha and Marcy affect her in the same manner.
What are your thoughts on General Yunan- scourge of the sand wars, defeater of Ragnar the Wretched, and the youngest newt to ever achieve the rank of general in the great Newtopian Army?
Andria’s line about friendship really hit deeply and it does differently when your older. “The more you love someone the more it hurts when they go.” It definitely hits hard if you lose a family member, friend or your lover. At the time watching the finale I never fully understood what Andrias meant but now I know and understand it better now being older and watching Elijah react to this…. 😭😔😣
the way my heart STOPPED when the king actually let go of sprig and when the flashbacks of sprig started i- 😭😭 this episode was a rollercoaster and i was definitely speechless after too. literally can't wait to see what happens in season 3 (also lowkey scared lol)
The reveal of what Marcy did was shocking but it was really tear-jerking to watch her try to justify it to Anne. "I gave you this, I gave you everything!"
No joke...the amount of screams, squeals of fear, shrieks of anguish and tears Marcy's "death" created was nigh immeasurable. As for me, MY reaction was the same as Eric Cartman's when he learned that KFC was banned in Colorado. (stares in horror) NooooOOOOO! (head explodes)
Interesting thing to point out: i think this epispde was hinting that marcy doesnt have a good home life, i mean, she didnt seem to care or miss her parents at all
The scene of Anne with her powers is my favorite part of the True Colors episode I never get tired of seeing that scene even in the intro of season 3. The first time I saw it I said interesting very interesting and when I saw it from the front on the screen I said I see a potential, a great power hidden within Anne and with great talent to use it Although she does not know how to control it, she is capable of facing whatever she will put in her way I am still waiting for the day that Anne learns to control her powers when she arrives that day I will be impressed with great happiness
"i gave you this, i gave you everything" made me cry so much when i first heard i stg I NEVER THOUGHT A SHOW ABOUT TALKING FROGS WOULD MAKE ME THIS SAD
in your points at the beginning i'm surprised you didn't mention in the intervening episodes when Anne *blushed* at Marcy during a conversation (and not in an embarrassed way); also the pet names, the PET NAMES; i may be a marcanne shipper but dammit the show is giving me so much fuel! x3 can't wait to see how you react to this episode : D Edit: now you see, marcy did something terrible, but she was losing her friends, she is definitely not a socially savvy person and anne and sasha are basically her only friends, so her losing them was like losing her entire world. also did you catch that "i'm sorry, for everything"? totally getting brainwashed catra vibes from marcy being in that tank (and if you've seen the most recent trailer, hint hint go watch it!)
One of my favorite parts is that even knowing full well Sasha is right about this one, you truly can't blame Anne at all for refusing to listen to her at this point. That's really nice to see after way too many stories like this have the hero suddenly be completely unreasonable just so the story isn't instantly wrapped up.
A lot happened in this episode, and I'm really glad to have seen all of it! You seriously deserve a break for getting this out and "Marcy at the Gates" in the span of like 3 days, seriously great work on everything in these last few episodes.
You’re reaction was exactly what I expected it to be! Honestly this is an awesmazimg episode of television and now you know why we were all excited for you to watch this episode 😃😃😃😃
I'm pretty sure the "I gave you this" was less of "you should thank me" and more of "I gave up everything for you". And when Anne and Sasha left she was left with the feeling that even when she gave them everything, it was still not enough for them
Aside from the catradora parallel with marcy's "I'm sorry. For everything.", I can't wait to see your reaction to season three (also maybe what you thought of the trailer, trust there's A LOT to unpack there)
Now are you glad you took our advice and watched amphibia? Granted I would have loved to see reactions to other episodes but I suppose it doesn't really matter. You're all caught up with us now and ready to suffer with us in season 3 :D
My family and I got through Amphibia, binging it recently. Holy Heavens, this episode hit way hard. The "Give him back" sequence was intense, and I replay that regularly. And yeah, Marcy, the betrayal was rough to sit through; my family knew there was something going on with her, as if she were an antagonist. I didn't disagree with them, but I knew it would be more nuanced than simple "I'm the big bad (though that's later on)." Then what happens to her, oh em goodness, the suddenness of it, the looks on her face, jeeze. Yeah, like I said, the episode hits way hard; your reactions were basically mine. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I have a disadvantage that I name it "Uncontrollable Smile" it makes me smile at everything (including you crying over Marcy getting stabbed) and when I smile the smile makes me happy and laugh
First time I saw this, I was so shook as hell, I barely slept at all, the last 3 times, I keep having the same nightmares after that ‘cause this was both hype and filled with so many emotions it’s crazy if only it was a hour long, it would’ve made a bigger impact on this show considering it took a big 180 on this finale it’s insane
Matt Braly did mention before that in many ways, Amphibia is the fantasy Marcy ever dreamed of. It truly is heartbreaking to realize that marcy just didnt want to leave Anne and Sasha, like she said before that she has a hard time connecting with people unlike Anne.
Andrias: Wouldn't want you to tell anyone about the coming invasion! Anne: Dude our world got Nuk--- Sasha: Shut up Anne..just let him walk into it.... Or at least thats what I was thinking about invading Earth ...Like dude...until Marcy told him way too much, Andrias knowledge about earth is what? A thousend years obsolete?
To be fair, with magic, robots, and teleportation, it would be extremely hard for any military force to respond if they aren't already aware of the threat. With forewarning, they can plan ahead and stay on guard. But if blindsided, they wouldn't stand a chance.
@@AZDfox Sure , knowing beforehand is always good. Or rather, surprising the enemy is always worth it. An actual invasion of earth could be postponed for years in order to build up a force actually able to fight "Us" and not just end in a drawn out conflict. ....also I still stand with the picture in my head of Andrias standing infront of his ivading army, baffled and confused as why that big, furry animals is charging at them...carrying a beeping metal thingy on its bac---OH CRAP IT'S A RUSSIAN BEAR WITH A NUKE ON IT! * plays C&C soviet theme * Or even better, can you imagen Liberty Prime in this scenario?
She dosent refer to the planters as things, she was refering to her friendship with him
@@harrybechtle4333 I think that’s the point of the scene at first glance it sounds like she’s referring to them in general but if you actually think about it you realize she meant the friendship which would explain Anne and sprigs expression honestly an amazing scene
That’s what I was referring to, yes. I kind of generalized myself. I apologize.
"she might not know the full extent of his dark intentions but she's like in on a secret with him" I've never seen someone catch on so accurately

It's... disconcerting to see how, in the end, the only one who didn't take Amphibia as an RPG or a playground was, in fact, Anne

I mean, it took Andrias stabbing Marcy through the chest and Anne getting her powers for both Marcy and Sasha to see that their actions had consequences and that they weren't in some kind of fantasy world

London Tipton:
@@startrooper6910 thats more tv disney, movie disney still loves killing off characters
that's walt disney pictures, this is disney channel.
@@startrooper6910 In all honesty it doesn't make a difference. Disney has never shyed away from the concept of death or in Marcy's case near-death before and it won't be the last. That's what makes these stories so impactful because Disney isn't afraid to be real when it has to.
Star vs The Forces of Evil also had a ton of death or implied death (Toffee's in particular was pretty graphic).
Marcy was never supposed to be coded but Matt liked when people made that connection

Fun fact: In a deleted scene during the duel between Anne and Sasha, Anne is LITERALLY TRYING TO KILL SASHA.
It's at times like this you realize marcy is like 13 and running from home who was manipulated by the first parental figure she met
Marcy: look at sprig I gave you this, I gave you everything!
Sprig: [backs away terrified]
My room: [is flooding with tears]
Marcy probably didn't explain the true power of the box to Anne and Sasha though, from what King Andrias said at 19:10
Edit: love the theory about previous humans in Amphibia tho 👌
When she got those powers and her hair glowed blue,it kinda resembled her beta design which was long blue hair with the leaves and twigs and blue eyes
Also in that painting of Andrias ruling with the box there are 3 moss creatures!
Opportunity
Your theory with the moss creatures is so cool, never thought of that before!
Still. Years later, it still is one of THE greatest episodes in animated TV history
Plus i love how she says “It’s Disney u can’t do that” basically killing off people when literally Disney is known for killing people especially the protagonists parents 💀
Their parents, not THEM
Name one other time Disney allowed an actual child to die on-screen. I'll wait
Yeah but not a protagonist’s friend being brutally impaled. Usually people die offscreen or it’s implied via the use of shadows (ex. Scar’s demise in The Lion King). Here we actually saw the blade protruding from Marcy’s chest.
Disney doesn't typically kill children graphically on screen.
Elijah: This is Disney, you can't do that shit.
Disney: We did, and we made Lumity happen too.
Don’t give Disney credit for those! They’re the ones actively fighting against this kind of stuff
28:03 a fun fact is that marcy's favorite ice cream is mint chocolate chip, which is what fell on sprig's face.
How do you know that

I think it was "The final scenes of this episode contain some intense moments that may not be suitable for all viewers"

"She has legs!! Im like about to cry"
Me having already seen this episode: oh dont worry... You will.
My bf got to see me react to this and it was just about as animated
They had a dealy on the episode because of the whole, stabbing thing. The higher-ups did not want them to include it. The warning at the start of the episode, and showing season three's intro early showing Marcy at least not fully dead was the compromise for getting it out.
Ugh disney needs to accept more mature stuff amphibia isn't even a show for 5 years olds it's pretty much 9-any age really and 9 years olds could easily recognise it's just the way the plot is going and they could've been so excited without the intro
They also forgot to tell ITunes about the delay.

Amphibia just does things right when it comes to emotional and tense scenes, I was on the edge of my seat during Marcy’s breakdown, and I sobbed for like five minutes after the episode ended, the writing that goes into this show genuinely makes me so happy that it exists
Anne's powers was epic. She turned into super saiyan. Marcy getting stabbed was one of the darkest and most heartbreaking moments I've cried

Marcy’s death was so good, but I was for sure crying after watching the episode. I was up around half the night watching it, but I loved this finale

One of my favorite parts is that even knowing full well Sasha is right about this one, you truly can't blame Anne at all for refusing to listen to her at this point.

Agreed. It's less like a TV finale and more like a dnd climax. Complete with one of the players failing their save roll
(At 26:00) you want to know what the sad part about the scene is? The way Marcy said it, she accepted it as her fate.

Anne: Dude our world got Nuk---
Sasha: Shut up Anne..just let him walk into it....
But let's be realistic, Andrias would first send scouting partys to earth...and some of the information they would bring back...let's just say...would be less then ideal from what he assumed.
* plays C&C soviet theme *
Or even better, can you imagen Liberty Prime in this scenario? Throwing friggin nukes at the invaders like footballs while quoting anti amphibian things? - Haha
