As a rower myself I have found that whenever I am rowing there is a 30-60 second interval where I’m like oh this is cool and then the rest is pain and suffering but it’s cool 😎

It's so fascinating to see these commentating legends' faces, usually just faceless delight, very cool!

'It takes about six minutes from the signal of the start, to the horn of the finish line.' Oof.... That is a fast time for a single sculler...

So why is rowing commentary always so completely useless?? EVERY race commentary should have a rate meter tracking EVERY boat, so you can see who is making a push, and who is flagging.

If you like those statistics, you should watch indoor competitions. A lot of professional races have a rate meter (4:25) but it kinda takes away the charm. An important part of a race is that you focus on your own stroke and your own boat. The best times are not set by trying to pull up to your opponent but by pushing yourself to your personal best performance. It is about the feel and the character, not about the statistics when you are in the boat. As a spectator it is nice to have the stats ready to see who is doing well, but it is a lot more fun if you just look at the boats and see who is rowing their best strokes and who is making tiny mistakes.

Completely disagree. Rowing commentators on these events are a real addition to the race, they see things you don't see and respect the athletes while doing so.

I dont recall any real "pain" from my years of rowing eights- guess the endorphins took care of that for me. now, muscle stress, damn right, I was well aware of that.

The best way to watch is definitely not live. You gotta wait until something interesting happens, get told about it, then watch that part of the race

catching a crab on the finish line, then losing, is my worst nightmare. let alone at the olympics
