I worked the F-105s, F and G models from 1971-1972 at Korat RTAFB, with the 388th Avionics Maintenance Squadron, fixing the Doppler Navigation system. I asked about the nickname "Thud" at one time, one of the crews getting ready for a mission told me, it's the sound it makes on landing, or ... if you throw just about anything at it, SAM, AA, or a rock, it's the sound it makes hitting the ground. My only fighter assignment, from then on, either Air Rescue or C-5A at Dover. I was a proud member of the 388th for the time I spent on those birds.
Reserves at Hill AFB were the last operators, in case anyone thought it was the Georgia ANG. At retirement, that outfit had Ttuds in every form of camo from SEA to Euro 1 and everything in between. I was glad to see them fly at that time.
No, Richter was killed on his second consecutive tour. I think he was awarded the Air Force Cross, but not the MOH. You are probably thinking of Leo K. Thorsness.
The insane targeting restrictions politicians put on these pilots during the Vietnam War that caused so many of these guys to get killed or shot down was unbelievable. That was the part that drove me nuts more than anything else about the conduct of the war.
Worked for the F-105G Wild Weasels for 3 1/2 years. George AFB and Cuddeback AGGR. If I could figure out how to post a photo on this site I've got a couple of them strafing at the gunnery range.
Richter, he was a Medal of Honor recipient. The guy was shot down 2 flights short of 200 combat missions over Vietnam. Killed by a violent fall after he ejected. To put that into perspective, the goal of these pilots was to survive 100 combat missions over Vietnam so they could go home. No small feat. Richter flew 198. American patriot and hero.

That young LT, LT Richter, was a future MOH recipient..

Those dark early morning takeoffs are creepy considering the difficulty of some of these missions ahead of them

Очень красивый самолёт,но что-то было с ним не так, слишком рано США сняли его с вооружения.
Awesome love this plane
Good interview
the pilot at 8:00 Lt.? .... what a solid dude.

@@thecircusfreak5364 He was one of the most legendary and heroic 105 pilots, but his highest award was the Air Force Cross, not the MOH.
