I started when I was 10 and yes I agree. My friends started when they were two and everyone was like: “woah your so good!” And other praises and it doesn’t feel good especially when I had many panic attacks when I started because I couldn’t do an aerial and other “easy” things. I still can’t. It almost feels I try my best to be good but nobody praises me because my skills are not as good as my friends. I always compared myself to skinny, flexible, talented girls who are like 12. Sometimes I try doing something’s so much, but when I can’t do it, I start CRYING. I’m told to take a break but I don’t listen which makes me really overwhelmed. Should I continue? I really want to, but I don’t think I’ll be good enough
tealy I’m just now seeing this , and I’m so sorry I haven’t responded ik how you feel I have been in the same spot and personally I took a break and I feel like I got to grow at my own pace without the pressure so if you do take a break keep practicing and studying what ever you do don’t give up ! If dance is something your passionate about don’t let the fact that your not as” good” as someone who has had more experience :)
I’m 15 and I’ve been really wanting to start dancing. I’m scared that I’ll either be in a class of five year olds or be in a class with people who have been dancing their whole lives... should I still try? I’m also not flexible.
Yes you should!! Try going to a beginners class with your age group so you won’t feel bad about the five years old doing it but if you can’t do that, just don’t feel bad and think about working toward the goal you want to get
I started dancing at 17 and I'm 21 now. My first classes were people in the same age group, but when I took other more advanced classes two years later, I suddenly found myself (19 years old at the time) among super talented 13 year olds, and that felt very scary. I'd say try to find a beginner's class for your age group first so you're as comfortable as possible when starting out. If you can't, choose the next best option and don't let your age stop you from dancing (you're still young!). To this day, I'm still thanking my 17 year old self for getting out of her comfort zone :) If you need support of any kind, I'll gladly help you ^_^
If it makes you feel more confident I would like to share my story. I was 15 when I started doing jazz dance and I started in a class of kids around 8-10 year-olds. I wasn't too flexible, hadn't had my splits and was really nervous. But actually when I started everything was a dream. Despite my age I felt that I fit in and was really happy. I moved up to more advanced classes with older kids after a while and fit right in. I don't think you should be afraid :)
Think of ballet like building a house, if you don't lay the foundation, the house ain't gonna be good idk I don't build houses, the point is, yeah, you might end up in a younger class. Just focus on yourself and progressing the best you can in the basics so you can get to the advanced stuff.
You should definitely try!! You won't be placed in a class of extremely young children aged 4 and 5, because that's mostly pointing toes and skipping. You will probably be placed in a fairly low grade class with young children possibly around 8-11, but if you work hard you will be able to move up and be with people more your age I started dance at 15, with no previous experience, and was terrified. But I was put in a grade 2 ballet class, and then was able to skip up to grade four with girls aged 12-14. Believe in yourself, you can do it!!!
Omg everyone is talking about starting late but I started classes a year ago at age 22 😳 I self taught hip hop and kpop dance since I was 12 but it’s definitely not the same as classes! Still going to push forward/work hard to get where I want to be with dance regardless of when I officially started! Thank you for the great video 😊
Samee! I'm 21 at the moment, would love to become a dancer but was always too scared to take any clases or anything. (Being shy and having anxiety aint that good) Either way, ive started to look into it now and definitely going to start. Will probably be next year, as need to get back into shape again. 🙄 After watching all the videos and people saying how they started when they were old (13) i feel like im too ancient🤷♀️
@@patrycjakorczyk4548 I'm 26 and started 2 weeks ago. I'm also overweight by now, with 76kgs. I didn't make sports for years. The first lesson I felt extremely dizzy and had to stop for 3 minutes to get back to it. I felt it was a bit humiliating cause since I'm a late starter competing with 15 yo kids, I didn't want to show I'm not ready or won't learn quickly, but tbh, that motivated me to go for a run aside from the lessons and practice flexibility, and I've hated both all my life. Yesterday I had my second lesson and my resistance was much better already. I would recommend you to go as soon as you can. You might be nervous of getting into it in a bad shape, but dance lessons change that really quickly. You constantly get body muscle and might aswell lose weight. Idk. I've always hated sports xD I started dance so that I can do musical theatre. I'm only getting technical lessons and I'm loving pushing myself, which is something I've always hated doing, but dance gives you that motivation, so I really think there's no need to dedicate one year getting in shape, cause you get that from lessons, plus motivation :) I think that late starters have the privilege of being more determined, so I think you can use that in your favor. This is my advice to you. But if you really can't join this year, getting in shape will be good!
@@patrycjakorczyk4548 I know someone who started at 24 (or 26? havent been around then) and now she’s our dance teacher ! Also, I can totally relate to that feeling of ‘I need to get in shape first before I try class’ but honestly, dance fitness is really different, you’ll only get it by going to class regularly. AND if you are in lockdown, you can try online class. I find that less intimidating because you can always just claim to have a bad connection and leave xD
For everyone feeling overwhelmed highly recommend checking out Mykell Wilson. He startet to dance at 23 and took a long break after and now he's 36 and extremely successful. I know you wish you had started earlier, but you didn't so stop looking for excuses and do what you want to do! Even if you are frustrated, even if you don't really believe in yourself, dancing is a journey and it can give you so much you just gotta start.
I’m currently 19, and I have absolutely no dance experience in my life, and I’m not sure if you’d call me a natural talent.. but for some reason I really want commit myself to dance. All my life I’ve struggled with social anxiety, and it’s kept me from doing a lot of things. It took me a while to realize what I was going through, and now I’m at a point in my life where I’m looking back at my childhood dreams, and regretting what I didn’t do for myself... but I’ve come to the realization that I only have this life, and I want to go for what I’m passionate about. Growing up Ive spent a lot of time watching Kpop covers online, dance battles as well. Haha I’m kind of all over the place at the moment and not exactly sure where I go from here..
I'm 20 and planning on starting soon. I've been wanting to dance since watching videos online when I was 15. I also have social anxiety and its why I'm hesitating lol.
@@sunflower-cv5vm Well, it seems like we’re in pretty similar places in life! I’m hoping once I start college there will be opportunities for me to join like a dance club or smth like that. I think it’d be a better community and environment as opposed to taking classes at a dance studio. Cause I feel like a lot people would come & go, and Im looking to create relationships man!! 😩😩 social anxiety can be real deceiving sometimes… hope you get to follow your dream! I’m rooting for you! 👏
@@CP-dp3pg I was thinking the same. I want a community with familiar faces, things would be much more enjoyable that way lol. My college has a dance program so I'm thinking about applying for it. But I still want to find a studio. Good luck to you as well!!
Hey, how are you doing? I joined a dance class yesterday and I'm 19 too. Your story is too similar to mine except that i have strict parents who are against dancing 😂i didn't tell them about the class. I hope you're enjoying it, love from my side
is this a sign???? I just turned 19 recently and I really want to excel in dancing I don't how far I will go but I am definitely not giving up this time your comment literally awakened my hope and dreams
I know someone who started at 24 (or 26? havent been around then) and now she’s our dance teacher for the advanced classes! Just stay committed, it’s never too late
I’m 17 but really wanna start dance. Im scared to start because I just don’t know if I’m any good. But I feel like dance and music are the things that make me feel alive and give life meaning and I know that you need to pursue the things that make you feel whole.
Im in the same situation. I don’t think I’m good enough because I never danced in my whole life and I’m 14 so I’m too embarassed to dance in front of people 😔
Ellie Richard honestly,,, just do it. I know right now you probably won’t be 10/10 professional level but that’s what dance lessons are for. Everyone starts out somewhere and won’t it be so impressive when later in a couple years you can say that you started late? Everyone starts out when they’re 2 or 3 but you’ll be a more interesting story. Better late than never 🤷♀️
Ellie Richard idk where you are so idk what dance studios are available around you but try to see if there are any non competitive/ private studios or classes in your area. It shouldn’t be too hard to find a studio or a teacher online either
I really want to start! and I'm 12, plus I'm really flexible and I love to like do it at home, like tutorials. My sister and I always did it in our bedrooms when we were younger but we couldnt take dance back then😂
I started dancing at 24 lol no regrets, pure enjoyment! I think there is no point in restricting yourself from something you want to try just bc you're afraid of other people's opinions. You only live once, after all
I started dancing when i was 3 years old an quit in the age of 12. I am almost 17 now and can say that it was the biggest mistake in my life. I miss it so much but i am afraid to start again bc everyone will be better than me. I am from Germany and we don't habe a good dance studio where i live so i don't know what to do. But i dancend all your combos and you inspire me a lot thanks for that ❤️
Same! I dance competitively from the age of 3 and quit when i was 11. I have regreted it everyday since. I am not 16 and have just enrolled in classes at my local dance school! I am so excited to get back into! I am absolutely terrified to start again, but the only way to go now is up. You should definietely try to find a way to begin dancing again, if you dont you will continue to regret it. xoxo
Hey! Similar story, danced from 6 to 12, quit, started 2-3 month ago , I am 23 now and I am so happy I finally made the descision, it’s hard, it doesn’t look very nice but I am hugely motivated by what can be possible and the fun while practicing is also a great factor. If you are waiting for a sign: just try it out. Einmal zur Probestunde auch wenns Überwindung kostet :-D viel Erfolg
@@dianarazm I did ballet at 8 and then I quit and now I regret it. I really like contemporary dancing and I dance at home but I want to improve. What type of classes should I take if I’m start dance? Like ballet or contemporary/lyrical
@@cher3314 you still are really young at 13 i'm 21 and ofc I don't think i could start a dancing career now, but you definitely can!! just keep practicing!! Don't give up 💓
@@xxpaige8943 I want to start and I am 12. But when I was 4 I did ballet. Then when I was 7 and 8 I did Gymnastic. Then when I was 9 I did dance then I quit and did a different dance school for 4 months when I was 10. Now I am 12 and I won't to do aerobic gymnastic really bad.
Alannah Lee You should do ahead and start girl! I did ballet when I was 5 and then I did a dance club at my school when I was 8 now I’m 12 and I’m taking virtual dance classes every day! I don’t regret a single thing nor do I care if I start late.
@@soleilhogg4448 thanks for the inspiration. I will see if there are any aerobic gymnastic online class. When school tryouts come I will tryout for aerobic tryouts!! :)
Ava, I know this video is a little old by now, but I just wanted to say, thank you. Thank you so much for giving me motivation to start dancing. I am 14 years old (turning 15 in a week haha) and this summer I made the decision to take an intermediate lyrical/contemporary class at my local dance studio! I have danced for only 2 years of my life, and this class (although it is with younger kids 2-3 years younger than me) is so good for me! I’m learning a lot and just watching your videos inspires me to get better! I would say I got back into dance later than normal and seeing how much you’ve progressed over t course of just a few days is SO motivational! I hope to be like you some day and hopefully land into my competition team at my studio!! :)
Yesss!!! Not taking enough classes is super important, I started at 10 and my first year I only took 1 class a week (ballet). I regret it so much, now I take ballet, jazz, lyrical, tap, hip hop, and strength and conditioning.
Hi! For your next dance chat you should do convention tips! Like what to wear, how to stand out, how to get scholarships, how to make the most of your weekend, etc :)
Today is my first day back at the studio since I was a kid - I’m 28.. luckily I prepped with yoga and barre class and have been resting in between a lot. Can’t wait! Thanks for your channel ❤️
I sooo feel whenever she said not taking enough classes. I’ve been dancing since I was 2 and for 10 years now but I only take three classes because I can’t make the decision to take more😕
i started dance a year ago when i was 11 and since i live in england classes aren’t really offered for people who have started late and want beginner dance classes so i go somewhere once a week which doesn’t take dance seriously which i want to do so these videos are really helpful 💕
I’m a teenager now and obv I’m starting dance late you can email the teacher and tell them what has happened and they will help you I have my first dance class today and since I’m a hip hop dancer I’m scared about doing ballet and contemporary and acro but I know it’s my passion so I will talk to them about private lessons
Amisha Fatin.S I’m 17 and the same homie. I’m thinking about going to this non competitive dance studio that does private lessons. I think that’s the best place to start.... but idk if I’m any good and I’ve never danced professionally before.
Love this!! I started late when I was 10, went independent in 10th grade, and now am at a completely different studio so never be afraid to start late or step out of your comfort zone!
wow i actually related to all of these haha. 1. i overstretched to try and “catch up” with others and i ended up pulling my groin and had to sit out for a couple months😭 2. my first year of dance, at the age of 10, i just took hip hop, then added a new style every season which i regret because now i train in 9 styles as a 14 year old which is great 3. i would always compare myself to others and tbh i still do but i’m working on it 😉 4. i wasn’t going to go to a convention i can’t remember why, it had something to do with my competition , but my friend practically forced me to go and i’m soooo glad i did because i learned a lot 5. OMG YES when i first started i was so shy i only talked to like one person in my class and people wouldn’t talk to me since i didn’t talk lol. once i moved to a different studio two years ago and i was a bit older i broke that habit and made sooo many more friends! k thanks bye
I started when I was 3, but I never actually learned how to dance. We were just learning choreography and then performing it. No tips, no working on technique. Now I am 13 and I am starting to rlly think that I should do more complicated and more skilled dances to improve myself! Thank you so much for the video
I’ve been dancing since I was 2 but have only started taking it seriously this year (I’m now 12) I take ballet Morden jazz and tap but I teach myself hip hop and contemporary because I can’t afford to do 5 classes
I can’t believe I’m watching this video four years later. But this resonates with me on so many levels because I wanted to take dance classes, but I worried that I wasn’t flexible enough. Now I’m 21 and getting started. I’m not taking classes though, but I’m following along with RUclips videos!
hi me too I started 3 weeks ago and it went really well I'm struggling keeping up but her tutorials are really helpful. it will get better and it is so possible if you start and just try people might judge you but you got this!!!
I’ve been dancing since I was 3 or 4 and I’d like to say that these are helpful no matter how long you’ve been dancing especially because sometimes you forget things that you’ve learned earlier
I was a dancer since I was 4 and then I stopped but now I really want to start again. My dance teacher once pulled me aside and said that if I really wanted to I could be a professional I’m so mad at myself for stopping so I wanna give it a go again (Ps major tip I have is CONFIDENCE it’s everything. Even if you aren’t confident pretend you are, fake it until you make it.)
as someone who started dance when they were 11, (I'm 15) i can relate to all of these and it doesn't matter when you start you WILL improve and always remember to have fun with it ❤️
Me too! I’m 9 and I really wanna go to a comp team but my leg holds are pretty bad/good and I don’t even know how to split even tho I’m very very close to doing it.
I’m in my 20s and ive been out of dance for a while, and decided to take control of what i wanted to do as a career and started taking classes again, its scary i will not lie, i lost ALOT of my technique and flexibility and its scary with the anxiety sometimes, but over all i am SO SO SO glad i made the choice to get into classes, dance has no age limit. It took me a while for it to click, but i’m glad it did
I started at 11 and I started with one class and 8 months later I made it on a competition team and now I take 7 classes I was already flexible because I did 6 years of gymnastics and 2 years of cheer I learned how to dance pretty quickly
@@kalisiasewell5602 not at all! I went to a beginner level class with a low amount of students and because I was working hard and it was evident it went pretty well for me ❤️

When I started dance freshman year at school everyone was so good because they had done dance before and it made me so insecure to the point where I would hate going to dance and eventually I just stopped. I regret it so bad because now I am 17 and wish I had continued
I have a dance question. I just started dancing at 19 I want to audition for an nfl team in 2026 when I'm 25. I am enrolled in dance college and dancing like an additional 8 hours a day. That's about 12 hours. Do you think if I keep working on technique and dance for the next 5 1/2 years will I get to where I need to be technically?
@@ellierichard8104 actually you will feel like that and probably at the beginning you are. but noone really cares. everbody's just busy with themselves. and after few months you'll gain more confidence. the key is to stick with it and be consistent.
My story is quite long too😅, I started ballet at school at 6/7 but lessons were cancelled because the teacher got pregnant, all my life I’ve been an athlete, running relay, sprints, long distance etc. So I had a break from dance and focused on that (while I did athletics I also did a lot of flexibility at home). It might of been when I turned 9 that I really started to enjoy gymnastics so I started doing self-taught and got not too much out of it, I wanted front handsprings and back flips but I only got as far as front limbers and kickovers, I still did comp for athletics. Towards the end of primary school (I live in the UK!) I lost interest in flexibility and stopped. Over summer, like you! , I really loved dancing (which came from my love for flexibility) and started self-choreography in my room lmao, and got my sisters to join but they weren’t too keen🤣 This is where it gets confusing THEN, I got into high school and restored my passion for gymnastics, stopped self choreography as I had school work to focus on the weekend and joined a gymnastics club which I left after a year as I wasn’t getting anything from it, it is was just a waste of money and I only went to see friends. Also during my first year of high school, I got interested into musicals and musical theatre and found my best friend at school who also enjoys musical theatre, so we joined a extra-curricular club together, 3 hours every Saturday. I went there for a solid 2.5 years (best believe I’m 14, it’s been a longgg journey💀) before leaving because I felt a bit uncomfortable and left out there, I found that most of it was just kids messing about and I couldn’t really learn anything there, it was hella expensive, half of it wasn’t even musical theatre and I concluded that I only really enjoyed the dancing element of musical theatre, my friend still goes though! Now, there is a lot less opportunity in athletics because of us now being far from venues, us being in high school etc, so I started loosing interest, but I still enjoyed the dance part of musical theatre, and practiced at home Last year, there were dance troupe auditions at my school and I got myself so excited about it, I auditioned with a self-choreo because I’d only ever learnt musical theatre dance, and I didn’t get in which really hit me and took away all my courage, even when I knew I had potential in dance But I kept trying, did dance lessons (the one you don’t have to audition for) in school and finally convinced my mum to enrol me for dance sessions after being on the waiting list for a year I must point out💀 I started proper proper dancing in January this year, and the teacher thought I’d taken lessons before! 🤠, well because of corona, I take online lessons with my dance school, but it seems that only the company (competition and convention) girls and one boy lol, are in those classes and I think the teachers have noticed that I’ve been determined and coming regularly to classes to improve technique I have improved in flexibility, strength, and performance in these classes and the teacher has said I have a lot of potential I’ve applied to audition for dance company! The auditions are in a few weeks and I am so excited!!! The teachers have said i have made a huge impression on them, which I think is good! , and I knew from the START that I wanted to compete in dance, I just didn’t have many opportunities at the time, before of finance and balancing out school, running and dance. I am ready to work as much as they want me to, even to get into Senior Novice Team would make my year💙, your videos makes me so happy and excited for when I could possibly do the same thing Remind me to update you when I get the results eeee😁😬 I plan to do both dance and athletics for years to come, and I can’t wait!!!❤️ ~ Sarah x
I started dance at 15 (I’m just turning 16 this year so not that long ago at all) and I started in advanced hip hop/jazz classes with others my age. Everyone is so talented and knowledgeable about dance, however I’m not that experienced. The only experience I have is gymnastics but it’s not that similar to dance (I had to break habits too.) Thankfully, though, everyone seems to be pretty nice so far. I was inspired by kpop to learn this style of dance, but I’m not really interested in learning other styles like tap or ballet. It’s very stressful to me trying to keep up with the class, learn new skills, learning how to keep up with fast paced music, AND getting the performance skills. I also have anxiety so it’s gonna be a bit difficult performing but I hope the members and I do well in April, lol. I just have to keep telling myself to push through and remind myself why I want to be good at dance. I’m a very musical person, I’d like to say, as well as artsy so it’s a given that I want to be good at dance too haha. I won’t lie, it’s stressful but it is what it is I guess
I started dance when I was three but wasn’t big at it. I never did competition and started going to more then one class only when I was 11 and I did competition, Iwas in a class of kids a little than younger than me but I still don’t regret it!
Thing is I did gymnastics from 8 to 11 then I did "dance" just really basic stuff up until now, I'm fourteen and I just started self teaching contemporary dance, I have never felt better, wish me luck! And you can do it too 💖 :)
ahhh i can relate to so many of these things. i was definitely too shy and instead of talking to girls in the class that were rly good i would like idolize them (lol only people who dance know what it’s like when that one girl goes across the floor improving and everyone just stares)
i started when i was 11 in the 6th grade and took a break during 7th grade, i’m taking it more seriously now though since i haven’t had any progress during the years 😭
I started dance when I was 5, and stopped at 9. It was the biggest mistake of my life. Because when I was 12, I started dance again, and it’s my absolute PASSION. I love it so much, but if I never did quit, I would be better at it. Like I am pretty good like I can do a front and side Ariel, I’m flexible, and I can do a lot of turns, but if I continued dance through that time I could’ve been so much better. And I have been taking karate my whole life so my build was different than a dancer(Shorter muscular legs). but for the past 6 months I stopped doing karate to focus on my dance and I’ve noticed so many changes in my body. I really hope to do dance for the rest of my life, but I wish I could’ve competed at a young age, but I couldn’t because I was also doing karate. But now I compete on a dance team for my junior high and I just made the high school team! And I am started up ballet again to improve even more ! Guys if you want to start dance for the first time or try it again, please do so. I promise nobody is goi bc to be judgy because we all have to start somewhere.
I did ballet, contemporary, break dance, hip hop and modern from ages 5 to 12, but I was never flexible, now I'm 18 and even though I've kept dancing a bit outside of classes, I've not been to a class in 6 years and I'm very anxious about joining a contemporary class again :P
I'm 11 and I really want to be a competitive dancer! I've been a gymnast for 3 years, but I honestly don't love it. I'm quitting at the end of this month and I'm starting out doing tumbling (love that part :D), jazz, and ballet. So excited!! My friend whos studio I'm going to has been dancing since she was 3, so I don't think I''ll get as good as her anytime soon, but I'm going to try!
i’ve been dancing since I was 4, but i’ve always been trained in classic ballet. i’m thinking about making the switch to a competitive studio but i’m scared + anxious abt being to late.
Can you tell me something about how to dance without a mirror and without any dance classes , because as I like dancing so I want to do from home except going outside during this penidemic . I am 14 years old .
i used to do gymnastics from when i was 3 to about 8 or 9 and then when i was 10 i went to tumbling at this dance place. i loved it but i always didnt feel like going. i always went with my two friends but they were never rlly that good and they didnt rlly like tumbling and we all stopped. i can do a back handspring, back walkover, i can walk in a handstand, i can do cart wheel, round off back handspring, and a back tuck and back layout on the trampoline. i lost my flexibility a little bit but now im doing flexibility videos everyday and ill gain it back because ive always been flexible lol i wanna do ballet and acro/tumbling rlly bad
I am starting dance next year, I will be 14. I am super excited. My parents didn't want to pay for it, but I have convinced them to pay for next year, and I will pay them back the year after when I start working. Thanks so much for this video, I am only going to be able to afford 3 classes a week, because I play soccer as well, but I hope at some point I will be able to do more. I have chosen Ballet, Contemporary, and Lyrical because I really want to do Contemporary and Lyrical, and Ballet helps with technique.
Im 11, basically 12 and I definatly want and am starting dance. After reading some comments and watching her videos, I've been inspired to began. Ive been stretching at home since I was 10 and a half ish. I also took a dance summer camp and I was not the worst surprisingly. Now I moved to a different state and I hope when I start, I am the middle ish people so I'm not too embarrassed. I also took dance class at 8 years old and I don't regret quitting it cus it was a toxic environment but I wish I would have kept doing it in a different studio. I know I'm late to this video but if anyone is reading this plz give tips!!
keep stretching but don’t over-stretch urself, be confident and friendly and don’t compare urself and make urself feel bad. You will become a great dancer! good luck
Can you do a video where you do a story time of the your first day of dance because I am new and it’s really hard to catch up 😊and how did the girls act cause at my studio they don’t included me even if I try cause they have been with each other forever
I started dance when I was five I took jazz but didn’t do the recital then at 6 I took ballet but no recital then 7 and 8 I took hip hop and I did the recital. And I stopped at 9 not because I didn’t like dance I LOVE dance I stopped because the studio was bad. But now I’m going to do it again at a new studio. I’m going to take ballet, jazz, tap, and contemporary my fav! I don’t think I’m starting late but this video helped a lot, thanks!
When im in my room dancing infront of the mirror I feel amazing I'm like wow im really good you have a nice body but as soon as I step out of that I feel insecure I dont dance to my full potential because I was shy
i started dance when i was 9, and that stressed me out a lot. this year is my first comp year, i worked really hard to catch up and even have a duet. I was so excited to perform and go to competition, but just before we went into lockdown. I was really bummed about this but i know that i there are wayyy more important things going on around the world. Im just worried about falling behind and not being good enough :(
i did ballet since i was 2 till i was 10, it became too competitive- my classmates and teachers were constantly mentioning each others weight, skill and it took all the fun out of it for me :( i’ve stopped, and now at 15 i really want to restart! i’ve forgotten everything, and can’t even touch my toes when i used to be able to the splits! wish me luck :)
I started dance at 11 and I wasn’t flexible at all and then I started ballet at 12… the class was a ‘first year’ class but it had all the girls who did Demi pointe and I didn’t know anything about what to do
Hi! I’m 14 I started ballet 2 months ago. I did dance from age 6-11 I believe (I technically took my first dance class in pre school but just some tap lessons) anyways I stopped at age 11 because of Covid because my family was at high risk and also dancing 4 hours a day in a mask is no fun lol. But the past year I was really missing it and I got the opportunity to join a pre professional ballet company so I did! I’m the oldest and tallest in my class and also probably the worst but I’m really trying to not compare myself too much because I know I had a lot of time off where I wasn’t doing dance and although I did do ballet in the time period I did dance I didn’t do a whole lot of it. Now I’m in nutcracker and all the girls my age are in pointe roles like snowflake and sugarplum fairy’s but I have to wait until next year to do those parts! This year I’m on non pointe rolls like soldier and Russian dancer. There are actually a few other girls around my age doing those parts as well so it’s really not bad! I’m just staying optimistic until next year when I’ll be a lot more caught up with the girls who are my age :) Sorry I’m trying to not make this comment super long but I want to add on to the making friends part of dance. For me because I’m placed in a class with younger girls it’s harder to talk to them but I do make some small conversations with them. I’m planning to start making most of my ballet friends next year when I can be in the snowflake and sugarplum scenes with them and I’ll have more opportunities to talk with all those girls my age! Hopefully I remember this comment so in a year I can update everything and how things are doing.
I was actually so happy because I was going to take a combo class that is 1.5 hours and it’s close to my house and it had ballet, Jazz, hip-hop and tap and now I can’t take that class so now I have to go to another place and the uniforms are 130$😑😑 I’m 11 they used to have a Saturday class for my age BUT OF CORSE WHEN ITS ME THESE THINGS HAPPEN☹️😩(edit I cant go to that class I have to teach myself now...)Hopefully next year I can
I’m 15, and this is my first year starting dance (I did ballet and gymnastics as a child but hated it so I don’t count that as dance experience). I am currently taking music theater and contemporary which is 2 hours a week. My studio also has a really good competition team that one of my friends on. I love watching their rehearsals, they are all so amazing and talented. Do you think it is possible for me to get to that level? I have practically no flexibility, can do anything as basic as a cartwheel, and am already struggling a little in my classes (we’ve only had a few so far and I love it but they are a little fast-paced even at beginner level). It’s not my goal to turn dance into a career, but I think competing with such an amazing team of such closely-knit people is something I would love to do! If anyone has any advice on how I can improve in and out of the studio to maybe achieve this level, please let me know! Do you think this is plausible in 4 years? (I graduate in ‘28 and therefore would be a senior dancer for my company). Thank you so so much!!
I’m 16 and starting ballet I would love to do more classes but I play and basically have volleyball practice most of the week so my parents don’t think it’d be wise to take dance seriously as I’m already to “old” but rn my goal is to get on pointe ..is it possible to get there within a year?
I actually started dancing at 12 and stopped for a year whilst getting used to abroad schooling and then going back to dance this year i am so nervous for my first class at this new studio that im just so anxious about like will they be able to talk to be?, how will my dancing be compared to them at there level?, will my teacher be like "Is this girl really doing handstand during stretches?"
i started dance at 3 and did it till 10 competition now i’m almost 14 and i wanna go back to it but i’m not flexible anymore and i’m scared to go back bc i don’t know if i can and i’m not as advanced as anyone else anymor
I started at thirteen and I feel like that’s too late to make it a career especially at the level I’m at but I really wish I could be a dance teacher or something
I started dancing jazz and hip hop when i was 10 until now (13y) and half year ago i started to love ballet and and learned from youtube , but now i want to start dancing ballet at the studio im learnig at and there is no "late starter" and i realy want to learn ballet {im flexable and i have a skills to learn fast and already learned a little bit frm home} will they let ne learn?
Number three is so true ! I started dance a 14 and I always compared myself to others mostly because they were “praised “ for being so talented
@@xxpaige8943 you should continue
@That Basic Girl thank you ❤️
tealy I’m just now seeing this , and I’m so sorry I haven’t responded ik how you feel I have been in the same spot and personally I took a break and I feel like I got to grow at my own pace without the pressure so if you do take a break keep practicing and studying what ever you do don’t give up ! If dance is something your passionate about don’t let the fact that your not as” good” as someone who has had more experience :)
@@xxpaige8943 definitely continue, you’ll regret it when ur older if u stop ❤️ u will get better
To this day, I'm still thanking my 17 year old self for getting out of her comfort zone :)
If you need support of any kind, I'll gladly help you ^_^
If it makes you feel more confident I would like to share my story.
You will probably be placed in a fairly low grade class with young children possibly around 8-11, but if you work hard you will be able to move up and be with people more your age
I started dance at 15, with no previous experience, and was terrified.
Thank you for the great video 😊
yay thats awesome!
I'm 26 years old and just started last week xD I feel so old in this comment section
Samee! I'm 21 at the moment, would love to become a dancer but was always too scared to take any clases or anything. (Being shy and having anxiety aint that good)
Either way, ive started to look into it now and definitely going to start. Will probably be next year, as need to get back into shape again. 🙄
After watching all the videos and people saying how they started when they were old (13) i feel like im too ancient🤷♀️
Ellie Richard honestly,,, just do it. I know right now you probably won’t be 10/10 professional level but that’s what dance lessons are for. Ava, I know this video is a little old by now, but I just wanted to say, thank you. Thank you so much for giving me motivation to start dancing. Over summer, like you! , I really loved dancing (which came from my love for flexibility) and started self-choreography in my room lmao, and got my sisters to join but they weren’t too keen🤣
This is where it gets confusing THEN, I got into high school and restored my passion for gymnastics, stopped self choreography as I had school work to focus on the weekend and joined a gymnastics club which I left after a year as I wasn’t getting anything from it, it is was just a waste of money and I only went to see friends.
Now, there is a lot less opportunity in athletics because of us now being far from venues, us being in high school etc, so I started loosing interest, but I still enjoyed the dance part of musical theatre, and practiced at home
Last year, there were dance troupe auditions at my school and I got myself so excited about it, I auditioned with a self-choreo because I’d only ever learnt musical theatre dance, and I didn’t get in which really hit me and took away all my courage, even when I knew I had potential in dance
But I kept trying, did dance lessons (the one you don’t have to audition for) in school and finally convinced my mum to enrol me for dance sessions after being on the waiting list for a year I must point out💀
I started proper proper dancing in January this year, and the teacher thought I’d taken lessons before! 🤠, well because of corona, I take online lessons with my dance school, but it seems that only the company (competition and convention) girls and one boy lol, are in those classes and I think the teachers have noticed that I’ve been determined and coming regularly to classes to improve technique
I have improved in flexibility, strength, and performance in these classes and the teacher has said I have a lot of potential
I’ve applied to audition for dance company! The auditions are in a few weeks and I am so excited!!! The teachers have said i have made a huge impression on them, which I think is good! , and I knew from the START that I wanted to compete in dance, I just didn’t have many opportunities at the time, before of finance and balancing out school, running and dance. I am ready to work as much as they want me to, even to get into Senior Novice Team would make my year💙, your videos makes me so happy and excited for when I could possibly do the same thing
Remind me to update you when I get the results eeee😁😬
I plan to do both dance and athletics for years to come, and I can’t wait!!!❤️

This helped a lot thank you :) I’m auditioning to the royal ballet next year! (White lodge)
ahhh i can relate to so many of these things. i was definitely too shy and instead of talking to girls in the class that were rly good i would like idolize them (lol only people who dance know what it’s like when that one girl goes across the floor improving and everyone just stares)
i started when i was 11 in the 6th grade and took a break during 7th grade, i’m taking it more seriously now though since i haven’t had any progress during the years 😭
I started dance when I was 5, and stopped at 9.
Guys I started 5 years after most on my class and now I'm top in my class. U learn quicker when your older
I legit started comtemporary at age 22 and its going well so far
For me dancing is more so a relief, so it would be like a thing that I would want to do more so for my physical health.
i’ve been dancing since I was 4, but i’ve always been trained in classic ballet. i’m thinking about making the switch to a competitive studio but i’m scared + anxious abt being to late.
I started dance at 9-10, And I had a rlly hard time catching up but I would recommend stretching and getting flexible first x
Can you tell me something about how to dance without a mirror and without any dance classes , because as I like dancing so I want to do from home except going outside during this penidemic . I am 14 years old .
i use my reflection in the window lol
@@user-ok8bh3ce3f record urself dancing
Record urself danicng
@@vampirate2347 no bc the camera distorts ur moves.. the window is like a full length mirror..
i used to do gymnastics from when i was 3 to about 8 or 9 and then when i was 10 i went to tumbling at this dance place. i loved it but i always didnt feel like going. i always went with my two friends but they were never rlly that good and they didnt rlly like tumbling and we all stopped. i can do a back handspring, back walkover, i can walk in a handstand, i can do cart wheel, round off back handspring, and a back tuck and back layout on the trampoline. i lost my flexibility a little bit but now im doing flexibility videos everyday and ill gain it back because ive always been flexible lol i wanna do ballet and acro/tumbling rlly bad
Im just worried about falling behind and not being good enough :(
Nooooooooooo :( but it makes you feel better, I’m 9 but I’m starting dance in the summer
Also how old are you now?
I started when I was 12 (now 14 and I was so scared) I started with ballet, added street and now I’m thinking about adding tap but I’m nervous
should I try to do competition I have been dancing my whole life but have never done comp and I cant do many technical steps.
hi ava! i loved this video :) can you do a video on body confidence as a dancer ❤️ sending so much love and light! stay safen
i did ballet since i was 2 till i was 10, it became too competitive- my classmates and teachers were constantly mentioning each others weight, skill and it took all the fun out of it for me :( i’ve stopped, and now at 15 i really want to restart! i’ve forgotten everything, and can’t even touch my toes when i used to be able to the splits! wish me luck :)
Thank u I want to start dance too but i'm worried its too late
im the same age as when she started
I used to dance at age of 7 and I moved to another city and I am now 13 and i am again starting soon.
So thankyou for sharing your experience
I did gymnastics when I was 9 but stopped at 10 or 11. It feels like I want to try dancing so that my younger active self could kick in
I started dance at 11 and I wasn’t flexible at all and then I started ballet at 12… the class was a ‘first year’ class but it had all the girls who did Demi pointe and I didn’t know anything about what to do
I’m 13 and I’m going to be starting dance this will help me alot!
I’m just staying optimistic until next year when I’ll be a lot more caught up with the girls who are my age :)
Sorry I’m trying to not make this comment super long but I want to add on to the making friends part of dance.
I was actually so happy because I was going to take a combo class that is 1.5 hours and it’s close to my house and it had ballet, Jazz, hip-hop and tap and now I can’t take that class so now I have to go to another place and the uniforms are 130$😑😑 I’m 11 they used to have a Saturday class for my age BUT OF CORSE WHEN ITS ME THESE THINGS HAPPEN☹️😩(edit I cant go to that class I have to teach myself now...)Hopefully next year I can
im looking to start dance and im 13 :)
Cool:D
I did dance for four years and I want to start again shoudl i ?.
I’m 16 and starting ballet I would love to do more classes but I play and basically have volleyball practice most of the week so my parents don’t think it’d be wise to take dance seriously as I’m already to “old” but rn my goal is to get on pointe ..is it possible to get there within a year?
Yes it is. Ask your teachers what's needed for pointe work 😁
I actually started dancing at 12 and stopped for a year whilst getting used to abroad schooling and then going back to dance this year i am so nervous for my first class at this new studio that im just so anxious about like will they be able to talk to be?, how will my dancing be compared to them at there level?, will my teacher be like "Is this girl really doing handstand during stretches?"
I’m 10 right now and I wanna be a professional Dance teacher so I’m trying to get more and more flexible
i started dance at 3 and did it till 10 competition now i’m almost 14 and i wanna go back to it but i’m not flexible anymore and i’m scared to go back bc i don’t know if i can and i’m not as advanced as anyone else anymor
I started at thirteen and I feel like that’s too late to make it a career especially at the level I’m at but I really wish I could be a dance teacher or something
lmao im new to danceing i been wanting to do it for a long time but now im going to it but im going to hip hop and another dance
Out of context, your nailpolish is beautiful and u look gorgeous. Thank you for sharing ur experience
What tho 😳 Starting at 13 is pretty standard, I'm almost 18 and I'm a complete utter clausterfuck of a beginner, guess I'm a different breed lmao 💀
I feel bad 😞
I started dancing jazz and hip hop when i was 10 until now (13y) and half year ago i started to love ballet and and learned from youtube , but now i want to start dancing ballet at the studio im learnig at and there is no "late starter" and i realy want to learn ballet {im flexable and i have a skills to learn fast and already learned a little bit frm home} will they let ne learn?
Thank you Ava for sharing! Your videos bring me inspiration ✨😊
I started when I was 11 and now I am 12 . I really want to do competitions.this video was very helpful
