Audrey Hepburn is Hollywood GOLD you can't judge older actress by there performances in older films with the same lens you use now. She was stunning and at that time, the standard for women in film has changed over the years....But Audrey so amazing for her time and really stood out. Go back and watch some older films of the time she top all of them. She shines on film was just so stunning to watch.
Completely agree. I'm glad Margot Robbie was mentioned because she really irks me. Everyone acts like her Harley Quinn is just _tops,_ but honestly it feels so 'one note' to me. Her "Jersey" accent constantly slips in and out but even besides that, she *just can't act.* It's CRINGEY watching her overacting pass as an "acceptable" performance, but sadly she seems is always considered the "best thing" about these films and is always given the most focus. I feel like she gets a lot of passes _just because_ she is a "cute" blonde wearing tight, revealing clothes.
I don't like how actors are elevated above crew. Fuck that. They need to eat humble pie. Actors on the same level as gaffers and grips etc. Every person is more or less equally important in a collaborative art form. If any needs elevation, it is writers.
Totally agree about Bill Murray, 'master of the deadpan'. Wonderful sardonic humour in Lost in Translation, Groundhog Day and Broken Flowers amongst others.
An unpopular opinion on this there is not really overrated or underrated actors just conscious or unconscious biases that predisposes us to judge certain performance's differently
Or people are susceptible to echoing everyone else thoughts an feelings in a way that skews our perception of the subject of judgment which may lead to undue praise that is not proportionate to ability or execution.
I thought Adam Sandler had 0 talent until Punch Drunk love came out. I fell in love with the movie and his performance. Bill Murray I have always loved, beginning at his small role in Tootsie.

Paul Rudd. He seems like a nice guy, but I always just see him and not the character. Can't figure out why, but I just feel like it's a little underwhelming most of the time.
Well, I think that Meryl is so often thought of as GOAT, or close to it, because she can play both Sophie in "Sophie's Choice" and Miranda in "The Devil Wears Prada." She can play Julia Child in one movie, and turn around to play Margaret Thatcher in yet another. She plays in the Charlie Kaufman/Spike Jonez "Adaptation" then turns around and makes the David Hare/Stephen Daldry "The Hours." I mean, come on. And that is simply scratching the surface.
I couldn't agree more. You'll have trouble finding someone like Meryl out there, who has such an extense repertoire of characters and delivers every single time. It is unfair to judge an actor's ability or quality based primarly on their recent role choices. If an actor has proven to be capable, they are, regarless of how safe/unsafe you may think some of their roles are. Nowadays people judge Meryl's quality as an actor as if they expected her to do something that she hasn't done yet, but the thing is... she has already done pretty much everything: that tells us how great of an actor she is indeed.
Leo DiCaprio for me. He can act yes & did some really good roles early in his career. However I've come to realize his schtick is just to choose the most eccentric roles to play. Seems like characters that are eccentric might just be easier to play & more subtle, nuanced characters would really flex his acting chops.
There's definitely a case to be made there. I think because Murray is still active and Murphy has largely left the spotlight is why Murray is seen that way.
Sean Connery - his range of acting is incredibly narrow and he basically plays the same character in all his movies while relying on his Scottish brogue and association to Bond to carry the role.
I've noticed Timothée Chalamet before it started. He had a short role in Homeland. And then his role in Beautiful Boy made me cry - I thought after watching it "how is he capable to do that in that age?" Let's hope that at some point he will do what McConaughey did, just stop for two years and play out another book about The Lincoln Lawyer.
The fact that she says that she is unsure of Chalamet's performances to make an opinion when hes already gotten a number of roles already proves their point about him being overrated lmao PS Margot Robbie has been a leading woman for probably a year longer than Chalamet so......
Hepburn is fantastic in Breakfast at Tiffany's. I love the novel, and while the film tones down much of the brutal nature of Golightly's existence, Hepburn really does inhabit the part and makes it her own.
About Will Smith, I think he´s a good actor - love "I am legend" - but he plays too safe all the time. He even said in a recent interview that he always thinks of what other people will think - unlike Jaden, who he called "fearless". lol
She’s a lot better than that, but I get your point. I see her as kind of a less talented early 2000s Brad Pitt. HUGE star, very attractive, has enough talent to work with name directors but not quite enough to be a prestigious award winner (like a Denzel or Tom Hanks).

Hepburn was a better actor later in her career than she was in her perceived "prime". She's far better in Wait Until Dark than she is in her earlier work. Isabelle Huppert, Jennifer Jason Leigh, & Juliette Binoche are far more deserving of the "greatest actor" reputation than Meryl Streep.

Hey, I just wanted to say that I am a big fan of your portrait work. Certain folk could train a thousand years and never capture that, so good on ya :)
I’ve never understood why Nicole Kidman is so highly regarded. She’s given some good performances but overall she’s pretty bland. I think Cate Blanchett and Toni Collette are much better
I haven't seen much of work overall, but Nicole Kidman was good in Top of the Lake. I bring this up because it's a great show that went under the radar; if it were newly released now on Netflix; it would be a lot more hyped.
Meryl is rightly rated. Choose any genre she was in, SHE NAILED ALL OF THEM. Sophie's choice is a literal masterclass! I would argue on her 3rd win for iron lady, she was incredible but she should not have won for her 3rd when she literally before and after gave so much better performances.
Breakfast at Tiffany's was a role she held her own in and didn't need to be molded or changed. The people in that film gravitated to her because of that independece.
In my opinion Milla Jovovich is one of the most overrated actresses in my opinion. She gets way to much credit for playing in The Fifth Element when the movie came out over 20 years ago.
Hey Maggie! Would you ever consider reviewing "Cloud Atlas"? I think it is the most underrated film of the 2010s and it is one of my all time favourite movies.
I loved Margot as Harley Quinn and I think she's good actress, we'll get to know in her next projects, but if you want different actress to play Harley Quinn I'll say Jodie Comer, her character in Killing Eve is like Assasin Harley Quinn and what an actress call me crazy fanboi but I think she has potential to be GOAT, she need some recognition, she was amazing in The Last Duel I felt she should've got Oscar nomination.
He was fine in Call Me by Your Name, Little Women, and Dune, but I'd agree he's cast for his looks as much for the depth of his characters. I think he's still in a Robert Pattinson circa Twilight phase of his career, and Pattinson didn't get respect until he took on non-heartthrob leads in The Lost City of Z, Good Time, and The Lighthouse.
@@MrDarrylR Sure, but I would say that Robert Pattinson needed the artistic license attached to the roles to flourish as an actor. I feel like Timothee got those roles but never infused them with any gravitas or genuine emotion (unless you count staring sombrely at stuff). That being said he is still young and I hope age/maturity is the issue.
Matt Damon - It almost always looks like he’s acting to me, I can’t get lost in his performances. There are a few exceptions but overall I think he’s quite bad.
Meryl Streep is not overrated. I use overrated a lot btw and some of my faves have giving performances underserving of the praise but Meryl is A FANTASTIC actor and does most things so well. She can be subtle, she can be over the top, she can be safe, she can take risks. She can do anything. Sophie's Choice was a GAME CHANGER amongst what Hollywood actors could do. Sissy is probably one of my favorite actors as well and she has a lot of respect amongst actors, it's just she hasn't done anything really that great recently, but most people know Carrie and Badlands so... Glenn and Sissy are the two actors that match Streep in my opinion. Actors such as Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon are overrated beyond belief. The older she become the safer? Mamma Mia may be corny film but her taking the role was not risky. Many thought it was a ridiculous casting and she delivered. The Devil Wears Prada has probably become her signature role in the last 20 years.
THis is a much better list and i agree with most of these. other overrated actors of past and present: some actually terrible: John Wayne Judi Dench( if she wasnt british most wouldn't care as much), John Malkovich, Will Smith, Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, Harrison Ford, Nicole Kidman, Don Cheadle, Julia Roberts.
At the end when you said under-rated my first thought always goes to John Garfield. Died way too young at 39 and was unfortunately blacklisted. Body and Soul is one of my all time favorite films
I'm late, but Maggie Gyllenhaal. I get a feeling like she's trying too hard. I am never able to believe her character. Particularly in Dark Knight I hear a lot of praise for her.
Would it be ok for a underated actor? I will give it a try. Mel Gibson! Braveheart he deserved the Oscar. We where Soldiers and The Patriot. That is just 3 great movies he acted in. I bet a lot of you will disagree. Why? Because so many judge him on his personality and religious beliefs.
I know Robert Pattinson is working very hard to shed his sparkly vampire image but he just doesn't seem to be able for me in the way Elijah Wood or Daniel Radcliffe have.
It’s the opposite for me, Pattinson in The Lighthouse and Good Time is unrecognizable, and he puts in solid work in The Batman, Lost City of Z, and Tenet.
Bill Murray has two characters: Loud-mouthed, obnoxious but often deadpan funny guy, and reserved, depressed, mostly deadpan funny guy. He has a cult fan base but he hasn't been a draw for the wider public for 30 years. I think peak Eddie Murphy was better, both as a conedian and actor. His performance in the 'straight' parts of Beverley Hils Cop is outstanding.
Channing Tatum is over rated. Hes a wooden actor Where as jai courtney is incredibly under rated and has so much range but hes always called the poor man's Channing Tatum. Re: I agree that Meryl Streep is over rated
Who's overrated? All of them... They are all STARS! Movie Actors have to be both actor & star. What's an actor with out a stage? But calling them "Stars" is like calling them saints, and saints they are NOT! I like to think Tashiro Mifune is the greatest Actor/Star, as he is a chameleon, who is always still recognizable, despite his dynamic characterization. He can play a short young man, a tall young man, an old man (I Live In Fear), a John Wayne hero or a slick Cary Grant type... Mifune is rightly celebrated as a great artist, but most people do not know his name, so is he a star? MAYBE MIFUNE IS OVERRATED!!!! I love Barbara Stenwick for the roles she plays, but that's the part, not Stenwick... Stenwick was an ok actress. They always give her parts that are like a soliloquy: The writers always give her over the top statements to the audience. I think Helena Bonham Carter is a great actress, but I always forget her name, so she can't be called a star... IMHO
Benedict Cumberbatch. I'm sure Tumblr would lynch me for daring to put forward his name. Well, they would if it was 2011. I'm certain they've moved onto the latest big thing. 😅
Robin Williams comedic roles never connected with me. He was just an old dude doing jokes from the 70s that was painful to watch. Great dramatic actor, terrible comedic actor.
Agree...................and as far as his standup, I give him credit for his ability to improvise (and do countless impressions), but I just never found him funny.
I have to disagree with Dune not requiring a great actor. The role of Paul Atreides really does require a great actor, even if I don't think Chalamet is that actor, for two reasons. First, is the general reason that you usually need a better than average actor for sci-fi to help with the suspension of disbelief. The second reason relates to the books themselves. Paul Atreides isn't the hero of the story, his son will be, and its arguable if what his son does is heroic, but he does sacrifice himself for a great and terrible purpose. You see, Paul Atreides gets to see the future. He sees "the golden path" and when he sees what he must do to achieve it, he can't bring himself to commit such an act. (The golden path will make whoever walks it a living God, controlling all time and space and knowing all things. All of humanity will become a slave to their will, and those that walk the path know that they're destroying all free will and all ambition for a greater purpose: to psychically scar humanity so deeply that all they will wish is for freedom for all time. The Golden Path is to do the most horrible thing imaginable for the greatest reason you could, and do all of this knowing just how hated you will be and what it will cost you personally. The golden path is going to teach humanity how horrible their desire for a God really is, and that anything else is better than that foolish desire to know the will of such a being and then embody it because you have no other choice.) In the first book we get to experience his youthful foolishness and brash anger, and toward the end the actor has to show us how terrified Paul is becoming of what he's unleashing on the universe, but because he sees the future, he knows he can't stop. He must show a brave face while the fear of the truth breaks him. Think about how an actor shows us that, and then realize that he's going to be a shell of a person in the next book, so we're basically throwing his role out from that point forward. All of this is easy to show us in a novel, but on a screen? The actor has to be top notch. Even worse? The first movie is basically a prologue to the actual story, but it needs to be done so well that people want to experience what comes next. All of this can't be done by one actor, but it does require some great work on an actor's part to launch an entire franchise of this sort, and then manage to hand it all off to the actual actor that will carry the franchise in the next movie without overshadowing everything.
If an actor dies young, they always get way too much credit for their acting chops. Heath Ledger, James Dean, and Paul Walker are three examples of this
I'm obviously in the minority here but I cannot STAND Jeff Goldblum. He is so irritating to me, beyond belief. Not funny, not iconic, overrated and full of himself. I hate him. lol Also, Adam Sandler is absolute barf. I think I blocked him out of my mind altogether. I can not stand that dude either... Have hated EVERYTHING he's ever been in.

@@SuntoryKick The only difference between Dune part 1 Timmy vs Dune part 2 Timmy is that Timmy got his face blooded by Elvis. Outside that, I saw nothing that stood out about Timmy. He did not come off as commanding despite his character was suppose to and none of the Paul Atreides qualities stood out in him. Honestly thought he was the worst Paul of the 3 actors who played the character.
Would be really strange to say she didn't have range...Lisa Dolittle is great.
She's not even blonde and for most people get accent doesn't matter.
her starring in "I, Tonya" was amazing imo .
I don't like how actors are elevated above crew. Fuck that. They need to eat humble pie. Actors on the same level as gaffers and grips etc. Every person is more or less equally important in a collaborative art form. If any needs elevation, it is writers.
okay...go read a book then
@@elasmojones I enjoy cinema and books equally, smartass. Lmfao haha
Julia Roberts will always be overrrated.

Totally agree about Bill Murray, 'master of the deadpan'. Wonderful sardonic humour in Lost in Translation, Groundhog Day and Broken Flowers amongst others.
Chevy Chase started the deadpan persona and did it better, arguably.
She hasn't done anything useful in the 25 years since, but Streep in Bridges of Madison County is truly one of the great works. So pure.

Zendaya is fantastic.
Completely nailed your defense of bill fuckin Murray. I cherish that man
Also, the commenter said he’s the most successful SNL actor?... wut
Robert Downey Jr--at least in his post-prison career. It's been nothing but a money grab.
This has not aged well.
Robert Downey, Jr. is incredibly good at playing Robert Downey, Jr. He is capable of incredibly good performances like _Tropic Thunder_ and _Oppenheimer,_ but a vast majority of the time he basically plays himself.
Currently, I have to say Rami Malek.
I don't understand why he is featured in so many films.

Paul Rudd. He seems like a nice guy, but I always just see him and not the character. Can't figure out why, but I just feel like it's a little underwhelming most of the time.
I agree but that's what I like about him, lol
Well, I think that Meryl is so often thought of as GOAT, or close to it, because she can play both Sophie in "Sophie's Choice" and Miranda in "The Devil Wears Prada." She can play Julia Child in one movie, and turn around to play Margaret Thatcher in yet another. She plays in the Charlie Kaufman/Spike Jonez "Adaptation" then turns around and makes the David Hare/Stephen Daldry "The Hours."
I mean, come on.
@@ammyt2082but after a certain time she is playing the same type of roles again and again.

Leo DiCaprio for me. He can act yes & did some really good roles early in his career. However I've come to realize his schtick is just to choose the most eccentric roles to play. Seems like characters that are eccentric might just be easier to play & more subtle, nuanced characters would really flex his acting chops.
@@SteveVC-kw1hx actually I didn't even notice it till you said it. Instantly I got flashbacks of all his angry scenes and he's pointing lol.
DiCraprio.
Hows someone gonna declare Bill Murray "The Most Successful SNL alum of All-Time" when *EDDIE MURPHY* exists?
There's definitely a case to be made there. I think because Murray is still active and Murphy has largely left the spotlight is why Murray is seen that way.
Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Rushmore. Eddie Murphy doesn't have 3 on that level.
Sean Connery - his range of acting is incredibly narrow and he basically plays the same character in all his movies while relying on his Scottish brogue and association to Bond to carry the role.
Very true. Connery was a great movie star, but not a great actor.
The fact that she says that she is unsure of Chalamet's performances to make an opinion when hes already gotten a number of roles already proves their point about him being overrated lmao
PS Margot Robbie has been a leading woman for probably a year longer than Chalamet so......
He even said in a recent interview that he always thinks of what other people will think - unlike Jaden, who he called "fearless". lol
I think Margot robbie is basically a bond girl that has a great agent. I like her because she's magnetic but she's a movie star not really an actor.
She’s a lot better than that, but I get your point. I see her as kind of a less talented early 2000s Brad Pitt. HUGE star, very attractive, has enough talent to work with name directors but not quite enough to be a prestigious award winner (like a Denzel or Tom Hanks).
@@bencarlson4300 Have you seen her without makeup!! Google her without makeup and you'll re-cant your comment...She's albino white, horrible skin and very very average...lol wait until you see....
I disagree with Timothée Chalamet. I think he's a promising young actor. I can't wait to see what he can do in "Wonka."
Juliette Binoche was quite awful in Clouds of Sils Maria. Both Stewart and Mortez acted circles around her and I am not a fan of either of them.
Jennifer Jason-Leigh was okay when she started out but she's been flat-out terrible for a quarter of a century.
For me it would have to be Tom Hardy, I just don't think he's as cool or as intense as people think he is.
Thank you
He is so overrated....
He basically looks and sounds different in each of his roles but the attitude and feeling I get from the character is always the same.
@@ruly8153 I'd have to absolutely disagree on that one. I do believe however that his latest movies didn't do him any service. I just can't see how his roles in Legend, Warrior, Bronson, The Drop, Peaky Blinders , The Revenant or Locke compare.

Not being sure what potential Timothee Chalamet has.. probably means that he hasn't shown much of it
He was fine in Call Me by Your Name, Little Women, and Dune, but I'd agree he's cast for his looks as much for the depth of his characters.
The Devil Wears Prada and Doubt are both amazing performances

Will Smith I thought was good in I Am Legend
Most overrated actors - Bill Murray, Halle Berry (thank you for ruining Die Another Day), Brie Larson...
Agree with Meryl Streep as far as modern movies. She literally mumbles and basically whispers in The Devil Wears Prada.
Her brother's the more talented of the two.

Agree, Gibson is great especially in the first Lethal Weapon....Great in Blood Father too.
you should really do the time stamp for each question
I know Robert Pattinson is working very hard to shed his sparkly vampire image but he just doesn't seem to be able for me in the way Elijah Wood or Daniel Radcliffe have.
It’s the opposite for me, Pattinson in The Lighthouse and Good Time is unrecognizable, and he puts in solid work in The Batman, Lost City of Z, and Tenet.
A terrible Batman - he looks more like a young Riddler
The Rock and Ryan Reynolds
Audrey hepburn had incredible performances.my fave, wait til dark
Bill Murray has two characters: Loud-mouthed, obnoxious but often deadpan funny guy, and reserved, depressed, mostly deadpan funny guy. He has a cult fan base but he hasn't been a draw for the wider public for 30 years. I think peak Eddie Murphy was better, both as a conedian and actor. His performance in the 'straight' parts of Beverley Hils Cop is outstanding.

I would have disagreed in 2011 and I disagree even more now considering Power of the Dog exists.
Dicaprio
I hate him. lol
Also, Adam Sandler is absolute barf. I think I blocked him out of my mind altogether. I can not stand that dude either... Have hated EVERYTHING he's ever been in.

Almost all of them now are overrated. When I watch Barbara Stanwyck, Betty Davis, Jimmy Stewart or Robert Duvall, Al Pacino, and then our current young actors, I dunno. I just don't know. No judgments, maybe its the material given. God almighty.
Tom Hardy is gonna be for me. I don't honestly get what do people see in him. Visually, he looks rather plain and uninteresting. He will never top Mel Gibson's Mad Max and I see a lot of people suggesting him as the next James Bond. I don't see him fitting the part because he lacks the charm James Bond is known for.
