  • How to press! In the fifth video of the "How to Start Lifting" series, Phil and Barb help you learn how to press and also discuss how to go about your first press workout.
When training, using chalk should be a given. Training without chalk is silly. Get and use chalk.

I can’t seem to stay tight, either my knees bend or low back unlocks. Could I just do the stricter version of this lift ?

Thanks! Shouldn't you reach your hips again once you are lowering the bar so that it doesnt hit your face or should you just lean backwards a bit? Also I wanted to ask whether I should also hold my breath and brace during the rep while doing dumbbell shoulder press as well? I would really appreciate your response🙏

Your hips will probably naturally counterbalance by moving forward slightly as you lower the bar so that - as you mentioned - you can get your face back a bit so that it's out of the way.
As for breathing, yes, take a breath in and hold it before starting the rep (on any kind of press), and only release it when you're back to the starting point.

So the bar dipping creates a kind of stretch relex is that correct?
