CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Ms. Cooper (Lillian Gish) takes to arms when Mr. Powell (Robert Mitchum) tries to take the kids away.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Adapted by James Agee from a novel by Davis Grubb, The Night of the Hunter represented legendary actor Charles Laughton's only film directing effort. Combining stark realism with Germanic expressionism, the movie is a brilliant good-and-evil parable, with "good" represented by a couple of farm kids and a pious old lady, and "evil" literally in the hands of a posturing psychopath. Imprisoned with thief Ben Harper (Peter Graves), phony preacher Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) learns that Ben has hidden a huge sum of money somewhere near his home. Upon his release, the murderously misogynistic Powell insinuates himself into Ben's home, eventually marrying his widow Willa (Shelley Winters). Eventually all that stands between Powell and the money are Ben's son (Billy Chapin) and daughter (Sally Jane Bruce), who take refuge in a home for abandoned children presided over by the indomitable, scripture-quoting Rachel Cooper (Lillian Gish). The war of wills between Mitchum and Gish is the heart of the film's final third, a masterful blend of horror and lyricism. Laughton's tight, disciplined direction is superb -- and all the more impressive when one realizes that he intensely disliked all child actors. The music by Walter Schumann and the cinematography of Stanley Cortez are every bit as brilliant as the contributions by Laughton and Agee. Overlooked on its first release, The Night of the Hunter is now regarded as a classic.

The way my university class cheered when she came out with the shotgun-- one of my favourite memories of my class lmao
When I watched this movie during my university screening, I literally shouted “yes!”
"He aint no preacher neither!" Love, love Lillian Gish!
Her line exemplifies the W. C. Fields adage, "you can't cheat an honest man"--nor woman, nor child.
I loved that line also Raven Le Faye.
Lillian Gish was wonderfully tough as nails and no nonsense in this movie. The "preacher's" eyes went O_O when he saw that shotgun LOL
man what a film. The shadows in this film are a marvel. Mitchum's preacher is simply terrifying, Gish is fantastic. The scene of her rocking in the chair at night is so good. Shelly Winters on the bottom of the lake is also haunting.
Robert De Niro used this movie as an inspiration for his take on Max Cady in Cape Fear on top of the original movie.
The shadows are glorious! I kept taking screenshots when I watched it, it all looked so magnificent and mysterious.
One of the best classic movies ever, and the only one the late Charles Laughton ever produced. Sadly, it wasn't appreciated when it first came out. If only he'd lived to see how well it's received now.
True. Like The Searchers from the same year.
The only one that the late Charles Laughton ever “directed”, not produced…
Miss Cooper is a bad-ass, she won't take Harry Powell's BS!
Lol when he went into his love/hate story you could see her bullshit meter going off the scale pmsl
bluecatky She disrespected a holy man of God!!
He's not a holy man, he's a phony
The way people talked back then.. They don't bother to speak directly what's on their minds, everything just comes down to wit. It's like a poetry battle and if you win you must be the one in the right. What you *don't* say is more important than what you *do* say.
I wish we still talked like this.
Bro it's a script, it took people time to write this to make it more impactful and interesting.
It's not how peoplea ctually talked. Do you think modern people talk like in modern movies? It's all just media.
Lmao what
Gish is the only person who does not finish the story of his knuckles
She saw right through his bullshit. And what courage it took for her to blast him with that shotgun! The wicked flee when none pursueth.
You are quite perceptive! I just rewatched the movie last night. When I first saw the film I didn’t notice the significance of how she just cuts him off when he starts to do the ole’ “Love vs. Hate” speech. I had not noticed it before in previous viewing, but it’s an astute observation because her reaction contrasts from the town folks who initially fawn over the preacher when he arrives.
She also wasn’t looking at his knuckles before his speech. She was just looking at his face.
She knows BS when she hears it.
I love how she's all "I don't want to hear your BS story about the hands. Now, questions!"
I always laugh hysterically at the way that sweet little girl runs to Powell lol
One of the scariest movies ever made. It will haunt you for a while. The scene where he rides a horse in the dark will stay with you. Love movies like this where they depend more on acting and storylines compared to most movies of today.
Absolutely. No shooting on location. I just watched a fascinating video where everything was done on sound stages. Harry Powell on his horse was actually a very small person on a very small horse. No river that the two children drifted down. I still don't know how the hell they pulled that off. SHEER GENIUS.
Lillian Gish was wonderful in this movie.
Eden Mayhew
I love the way in which she pokes him with the shotgun before he sees it.
Mitchum is everything cinema was and can be.
And he always said it was 'Just a job.' What a guy.
@@MegaTurkeylips So did Marlon Brando
Mitchum is the absolute evil in this movie
I think he represents death to some extent. He reminds me of M (Fritz Lang) but obviously, he's far less sympathetic and kills largely for money, rather than just compulsion. He's more evil than M.
absolutely, he is able to get into the house without any guilt or shame, Freddy Krueger or the Terminator himself owe something to this preacher
Yup and Robert De Niro used it as inspiration for his take playing Max Cady in Cape Fear
Roger Ebert said that "Harry Powell" was one of the most evil movie villains in Hollywood history.
Lillian Gish - giving a master class in performance
Charles Laughton didn`t like children or get on with them ,so it was Robert Mitchum who did all the directing of the two throughout the film .
This was years ahead of its time. Oscar denied from Mitchum.
They only give Oscars to those who get, say, for example... Defiled by Bears.
This is one of the greatest ever!
"She run off with a drummer....."
That isn't something you hear everyday! Haha.....I love this movie so much!!
femaleonthecreek during prayer meeting, nonetheless! 😂
Nowadays it would probably be "she ran off with a lead singer." Lol
Lol his face at 1:56
Lillian Gish's career spanned 75 years. When is came to show business she had no equals!
i watched this when i was a kid,it was so creepy, when the preacher starts to sing that song, i would hide. well worth a watch.
That's what my mom said about the movie music! She said the creepiest part of the movie, was when Harry Powell sang to the children that song, while trying to find and kill them!
He ain't my father, he's heavy
And *a heavy
Wow, I just recognized the love and hate speech that was used in Spike Lees Do the Right Thing when Radio Raheem explains his love and hate brass knuckles.
I love how Ms. Lillian Gish keeps the gun locked on the preacher until he leaves and was ready and willing to fire.
RIP Billy Chapin (1943 - 2016)
Lilian Gish is my favourite silent actress, i adore her silent films. And in this film i adored her more.
I want a movie called Miss Cooper vs. Joel Osteen.
SpoonyLionheart YES! I’m a Christian and I fully endorse that
I’d love that!
Wtf? Joel is one of the nicest people around. I went to high school with him.
@@lemonhead162 was he the inspiration for your name?
@@barnabuscollins5038 No, no....actually it's funny you ask....YOU were the inspiration, but then, RUclips policy wouldn't allow "d*ckhead1" for a name!
Finally, Harry Powell runs into the one person he can't con or fool; this is one of Lillian Gish's best movies--and she wasn't buying his BS for a second...
Edit: Thanks, Gordon...
It's Harry Powell. Cooper is the woman's name.
This is one of the very best films I have ever seen. Every time I get to see it I appreciate it even more. Scary and darkly beautiful.Oakland CA 2021
"She run off with a drummer!" -That's not something you hear everyday, is it?
Ringo Starr?
"She run off with a drummer" said noone ever lol
Back in those days, "drummer" was what they called a traveling salesman.
Harry is not quite as unconvincing as plenty of the televangelist I have seen. Love Lillian's sceptical look.
Excellent scene. Lillian Gish was a great actor.
lillian gish is still pretty as can be. isn't that something
"Don't he never SLEEP?"
This movie absolutely scared the pants off me as a fourteen year old! Never been so scared by a film since!
Miss Copper pulling out her piece!
That 12-gauge was a real eye-opener!
Great movie.
Classic movie still good to watch
That woman was such a badass.
LOVE THIS MOVIE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER 💓
He is stupid why would you tell her when you would be back..I love this ladie she don't play
AFI's 100 Years...100 Thrills - No. 34
By the way Robert Michum directed that boy as Charles Laughton couldn't stand kids.
Masterpiece movie
Mitchum played this wolf in cheap sheep clothing to the HILT!
He is one of the greatest villains in cinematic history.
Protecting her flock such a good scene
Charles Laughton
A few years ago I passed through Parkersburg, WV. If only I had known that it was a "Sodom of the Ohio River" surely the Lord would hath preserved me from mine visit!
While Mitchum as Powell is rightfully praised in this film, I think Gish’s performance as Ms. Cooper and her interactions with Powell are part of what truly perfects the movie.
We see early on that Powell is the wolf among sheep, but anyone who sees through his words (The judge, who is harsh truth, and John’s dad, another wolf) is too much for him. Once those forces are gone, Powell thrives.
But here comes Cooper, a woman who practices what she preaches. She’s the perfect opposing force to a man like Powell, and makes up his size with her wits.
The moment she meets Powell, it morphs from a horror film to an almost cat and mouse game where Cooper is clearly too much for him, leading him to cower and lick his wounds in a shed until judgement finds him.
Just with a glance and a few words, we immediately realize that the monstrous force of evil Powell has met his match. Gish’s stone cold glances and sharp delivery sells is beautifully.
This performance is an equal to Anthony Hopkins on silence of the lambs
what a scary guy
He said the Lord God Jehovah will guide my hand man stop it😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
1:25 That's so adorably hilarious!
trop bien
He reminds me of my mother
marvellous.
Great film
She ran off with a drummer? lol
Was Robert Mitchum ever better?
"....Sodoms of the Ohio River", "....Devils!", "....Whores of Babylon!" Yet this paragon of virtue intended to knife this kid in broad daylight. Oh, and he would "be back when it's dark". Keep that shotgun handy.
Lenora Rogers the kid was evil..harry wuzz doin GoDs wOrK!
i wish i were her
Up river in a 10-foot john boat...😆
I watched the remake of this movie that was made in 1990 and i didnt like it.
I saw the original version first and therefore didnt like the remake version. Just love that movie. Its true that it was ahead of its time.
Remakes are almost always inferior to originals -- particularly if the original was in black and white, which is especially effective in this one.
@@gordonbartlett1921 , I agree 💯..I've never understood how any movie producer could possibly think they could take a classic, excellent, movie, & remake it? I feel blessed to have grew up during a time when great movies were made, & also great music when singers actually had too have topnotch vocals with genius writers & badass musicians in the background..Nowadays folks are so lazy, no originality, & too much copying! I stick with the old classic movies & old classic songs for the greatest of all of those involved in its creation, & the great memories of my family sitting together enjoying it all❤
What remake? I could be wrong but I dont think there has ever been a remake. Are you sure you are not thinking of "Cape Fear", another great psycho Mitchum movie that Scorcese and DeNiro unfortunately remade?
@@roberthill799 no. I saw a remake made with Richard Chamberlin on youtube. I just watched it a bit.
Oh, ok. Sorry, I was wrong. I just figured I would have certainly heard of any remake since I'm such a big fan of this film. Probably best that I didn't. I mean, Richard Chamberlain? That has to be the miscast of the century.
Ted Cruz
Nah, he's too cool.
I always thought Rand Paul had a remarkable resemblance to Mitchum in this movie.
Ted Cruz cool? That's a new one.
What's the full one call original

Anyone else came here from a fallout video about this Easter egg?
How Hot can evil ever manifest into the handsome Mitchum strapping figure of a man???. This sensationally brilliant early horror had me begging for Mormon Mercy and brave confrontation of my fear of bible-belt mutiny!
A great movie about bigotry and double moral standards.
They were being a bit too harsh on Harry.
Gotta love a woman who can handle a gun, unlike wimps today who are afraid it's a snake and gonna bite 'em.
....Who cares?

You haven't been hanging around the right women.
Jonathan Zimmer, I see someone's been watching Death Wish. Ames Jainchill
Freaking Spike lee copied this for
Do the right thing
Okay and?
So what so is every directors copying every directors
I would say it was more homage than outright plagiarism or anything
Radio Raheem was no Harry Powell.
And the Coen brothers mine it endlessly - even lift whole bits of dialogues...
I love Robert Mitchum but not in this.
His performance was way over the top.
Sorry the movie stared out good then just got worse and worse it was actually getting annoying 🙄😒
I thought it was kind of dumb on Harry’s part to announce he’ll return at dark
