    we train arm bars a zillion times more than any leg/angle/foot locks. yet out of the few years of sparring, i have only been able to place maybe 4-5 arm bars and maybe 3 being successful, where I win with a foot/leg lock probably 20-30% of the time i spar.. people are well aware of the famous arm bar and just for that reason alone, it is hard as hell to sneak it in. And on a similar note, leg/ankle locks are not 'famous' or practiced often, so sneaking one in is much easier. People often think their legs are big and strong, so they arent afraid when you grab hold of it... oh boy are they wrong.

    The detail he teaches about foot placement around 5:30 regarding how you can set yourself up for a heelhook is something I only recently discovered and I'm a brown belt. I've always learned to leave the foot like he said until within the past year when another brown belt caught me in that self inflicted heel hook that he described. I consider the straight ankle lock one of my top 5, if not my number 1 sub, but just this year I learned I was making a big mistake from one of my training partners and now having that confirmed from Dean. Very good tip.

    Went to a Dean Lister seminar when he was here in Australia. Super nice guy. He was an "open book" with his information and what he taught. I went away from that seminar having a lot of respect for him.
    Someone has to interview him and ask him what he thinks about the latest leg lock craze spreading like wildfire due to the success of the DDS guys'. Would love to hear his thoughts on this from the original leg lock Tsar himself!

    the ashi garami position you would usually have the knees pinched to isolate their knee for a heelhook, so it's not as important for straight footlocks? Just wondering😊. I see that your inside leg is protected from the heelhook and hinders their ability to stand up the way that you do it

  • @carlosgranah
    @carlosgranah 5 лет назад

    I like how you address when people defend the footlock by using the "pata viva" or live foot. When you defend by lifting your foot upwards. This is gold!!!!

  • @brendanbaird1405
    @brendanbaird1405 5 лет назад +1

    Dean, why do you keep your inside leg between her legs as opposed to wrapping your inside leg over the leg you are locking and then crossing your ankles. I find much more control with that position as well as going belly down highly effective with that leg set up

    • @AbdullahDamluji
      @AbdullahDamluji 5 лет назад +1

      jokerhaha83 no knee control. To lock the ankle you need to control the knee line. His foot that’s on her hip? The knee attached to it is free. She needs to lock it down somehow, maybe by turning into it and pinning it to the floor. But it’s almost always a non-starter. If he’s already grabbed your ankle, and is positioning his feet on your hip it’s already too late. You need to start escaping or countering a lot earlier.
