I think my cat Morpheus is a familiar. One night, I was crying outside (I’m autistic and was having a meltdown due to emotional reasons, nature REALLY makes me feel calmer, that’s why I always go outside) when I started hearing a cat meowing, and my cats are indoor cats so I started panicking even more, thinking they had scaped, so I went inside to check and they were both there still, so I went outside again because I was still very much in a bad place. I heard the cat again, and then some of the neighbours’ dogs came and started barking at a tree, so I went there and there was a kitten, I shoeed the dogs away and asked the kitten to jump, and he did, right into my arms, he started purring immediately, he wasn’t scared at all, it was the weirdest thing. I named him Morpheus and he’s a year old now, every time I’m not feeling well, he comes to me, and he also comes every time I read tarot cards or do any witchcraft. He truly is a blessing that came to me during a very dark time. Btw, I work with Freyja now, and I think that she had been wanting to work with me for a while (including when I found Morpheus) but I didn’t see the signs, I think she might have sent him to me, since cats are one of her animals. I also have a strong connection with cat spirit in general
I did find my familiar at a pet store. I didn't go I expecting kittens to be there, I knew we were not looking to take on more pets, but this kitten just caught my attention and when I held her I was almost panicked at the though of not taking her home. She was with me for 16 incredible years and was always there for me. Emma was the most incredible cat I have had in my life.

I went looking for a cat at a shelter and met a ton different cats that day, my cat Lucy was the last one I met and she was quite aloof- but the moment I said “Maybe she’s not the one” she ‘Meowed’ super loud and say herself in my lap. As if to say “Look I have been waiting all day for you, you’re my human, it’s decided”. Cats are the best ☺️
Awww thank you the confirmation! A few years ago a lil wild rat bb got dropped off at my door and he was my everything. I believe the fae brought him to me as a gift and familiar. And of all the animals I've loved and lost in my life, I still feel my Treasure's presence daily.
My children (9, 5, and 2) each designed their own spiritual quests to find their familiars and name them. They appear to them as a European lynx, a very small rainbow-striped fox, and a nightingale named Starlight. My children are my inspiration.

I don't think they were my familiars but two of my pets were definitely something. I considered them my heart animals; my horse would often appear in my dreams and my cat came to me in an unexpected way - I had adopted a different cat but she had been promised to another family as well. They shelter asked if I could adopt my Hamilton. Part of me feels as though he was sent to me to help him more than myself. He ended up being very sick and I'm fairly certain he had been abused previously. I love my other animals but these two were just different.
When I was little, I found a mummified frog in my grandparents garage. My grandfather put it into a little box for me. I was really happy with it but then forgot about it at some point. Yesterday I was looking for witchy things in my drawers since I just started with it and I found it back and suddenly felt ... something. I think that frog might be my familiar and it's waiting until I get a little more adept at sensing and interacting with spirits before it starts working with me. Just a hunch.
My cat came to me when I was at my lowest, both of us needed help and I needed love. He was a stray kitten abandoned with his sister, I raised them both and recently lost his sister due to cancer. This cat is with me all the time and when I got my green witch book he was all over it, I opened the box and he wanted to see evey edge of it. I don't know if I would say he is a familiar as my connection with him is what I consider "true love" it is pure and genuine effection. I see him as just a regular animal, nothing more than another intelligent being to spend my time with on this earth. Which isn't a bad thing, I love animals so me looking to him as just an animal means something more natural and pure to me than thinking of my baby as a spirit. I do however belive that it will show itself as a cat, I've had several experiences (seeing two yearling bobcats within 2 years) and my emotional response to the sounds of lions calling for each other. I genuinely believe if I ever have a familiar it will be a cat of some kind.
In certain contexts daemons fairies and familiars were under the same category and sometimes interchangeable(not that I agree or use them in that way). Having a physical familiar as a pet can be very painful because they can die trying to save you. You may gifted with a familiar from a deity. Also it can be a demon too.
My familiar is a cat. My familiar took the form of my pet. I went to the pound and I already had a cat picked out, and I instantly connected with him, and he absolutely has been by my side. When you know you know and if you’re open I think you absolutely find them.

Could it be possible if a spirit guide could be a familiar? I have one spirit guide, and often associate him as a fox as well lol. To me he's kind of a trickster, cunning (such as a fox) and like he usually comes in my dreams in a fox form (usually as a bright orange fox, or like redish-orange). Usually I chat with him when needed, sometimes he'll send me videos of fox's, never irl foxes (i don't think i will ever see a fox irl in my area xD) but yeah. He came in pretty suddenly like "oh hey, nice to meet ya" and ofc I was alarmed but his energy was alr, didn't show/feel any negative intent so yeah. I personally would say your spirit guide is a guide no matter what form they take. Familiars take the form of an animal and helps the witch with whatever spell or ritual or sends messages to them. They can do many things and are more personal than spirit guides. My familiar personally helps the connection between me and my deities and will also help with my craft.
I got my familiar through working at a pet store. I'd fallen in love with virtually all animals there, but at the end of the day I had no real attachment to them. Then one day, this ratty looking, angry kitten came in(we took community cats, fixed them up, and sold them at-cost, to help keep the local shelter from overflowing), and this kitten had to be alone, cause he played nice with no one. My coworkers hated him, which never happened for them, but somehow I fell head over heels for this angry kitten, who wanted nothing to do with anyone. For some reason I just couldn't leave him. The idea of him going home with someone else gave me severe anxiety, to the point I had no choice but to bring him home. Now, after all the patience it took to heal his obvious trauma, he's nothing but the biggest love bug whos best friend was my roommates hamster, and he spends his time returning the favour and helping me to heal emotionally, and access my mental powers. He came to me at the very start of my journey, before I even knew what path I'd taken, and I hope he will be here for many, many more 🧡
I've always felt very connected to cats. My grandfather passed away very suddenly the day before my birthday when I was about to turn four. We were celebrating my birthday in the garden and suddenly he had a heart attack. Around one year later, a stray cat showed up on our porch. She was very small, famished and had a broken tail. We gave her some water, the next day we gave her some milk, the next day we gave her some meat, etc. Then suddenly, on my birthday, she gave birth to three kittens. We kept them and to this day, eighteen years later, we still have cats even though some have come and gone. They're truly my babies. I'm still trying to figure out my beliefs. I don't know if it was my grandpa looking out for me, my grandpa reincarnating or some deity or the universe looking out for me and sending me a message. I just know that it has always felt like too much of a coincidence for me to just brush it off as nothing significant.
My familiar appeared when I was in my barn and my dog, Blue, was barking at a cat. I shooed him out of the barn and this grey cat with a moon shaped spot on her chest just ran into my lap. I didn't know about witchcraft then. I named her Luna after the moon and my favorite harry potter character, but she loves me mostly. A week later, I learned about witchcraft. So I believe that me meeting Luna lead me to witchcraft.
My personal familiar is a phoenix. From communicating with him I've learned his name and also learned all about phoenixes and bred them and created tons of other species of them and I have categorized them into different taxons. My phoenix is 8.5 feet tall and resides in the astral plane with the rest of his kind.
I really liked the familiars in the Netflix Sabrina. The nod to history where her aunts chose from traditional animals being offered by Satan/the church, but Sabrina went out on her own onto the woods and asked if anyone wanted to work with her. I thought it was fun
My familiar is a specific type of cat with a ringed tail, I didn't realise it until about a year into my practice but when I was in need I would always see a cat with a marked tail. Birds are also messengers to me specifically white birds which aren't common where I live, I always know when I see a dead white bird around my property that something important (usually bad) is going to happen. I had found Opal (my familiar, a little lynx point cat with blue eyes) crying beside the road hiding in a hollowed out log when she was just under a year old. This was around the same time I began to look into paganism and witchcraft as a whole. She’s been with me since then (and she’s now closer to three or four) and often appears in dreams to deliver messages (along side helping with spell work :])
I’m looking forward to finding my Familiar, the impatient part of me want to know right now but I understand that it can take time. They will appear when they want. I’ve already encountered my Spirit Guide but as I’m relatively new to the craft, I’m not rushing anything. I am still learning, but I never realized that familiars could be spirits that appear as animals in nature that you come across. I’ve had 3 experiences (that I can recall) of deer. I live in Tennessee and the deer population here is ridiculous BUT I have had personal experiences with them. The most incredible one was a deer couple I came across in the woods down the street from my house. I was standing in the creek and they were a few feet away from me. All three of us just looked at each other in silence. And because I’m whimsical and all that shit I decided to just bow my head to them thinking somehow that would show them I wasn’t a threat. And to my complete surprise, the female deer did it back to me. And we continued on. It was amazing. And now with this new information on familiars, it makes sense to me now.
I’m pretty sure mine comes to be as bee’s. My nick name from my late grandpa was SheBee. I have no idea why...but now since starting my spiritual journey, I have started to love bees for some reason. I got these cute earrings of bees and wear them so much I now consider it as a part of my work with my familiar. Bee’s have shown up a lot in some of my tarot decks and I asked the universe to show me a bee (it’s winter here btw) and the next day after asking, I was at work moving something and there was a dead bee.
My story is a bit odd, during a physical trauma at around 6 years old or so, My guardian angel pulled me into the astral plane as a way to keep me distracted, at that time, another entity witnessed my being assaulted and chose to stay with me from then on as a protector, at around age 9 this entity began to materialize when I was stressed or angry, by the time I was 19 it had begun to physically manipulate objects in my mundane life, when I was 20 I visited a phsycic church, the director and I shared a conversation about him, I had named him, he was getting far too strong and opinionated, we decided to let him know I was no longer 6 or in danger, and he needed permission to release me and move on to his own purpose, I called him my familiar for lack of a better word. I miss him sometimes, I'm now 50, and know he was becoming dangerous, I gave him far too much power over my thoughts, over my reality, I know if I'm approached again, I will have a far better understanding of boundaries etc, wondering if anyone has some more insight.
Bit of an essay incoming! But I do recognise this so wanted to throw in what I know! I'm trying to put down everything I can remember from reading about this stuff and I'm not a professional so I may get some stuff wrong. (Other resources for getting insight: look up "dissociation and trauma" to get a LOT of educational resources that will probably explain things better than me. A good youtube channel is DissociaDID, and an amazingly thorough book is "Coping with Trauma-Related Dissociation: Skills Training for Patients and Therapists" by Suzette Boon, Kathy Steele, and Onno Van Der Hart.) Anyways, what you descibed sounds EXACTLY like a dissociative response to trauma, for example Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) or Other Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD - it's the most commonly diagnosed form I think); it's a known, non-spiritual/supernatural thing that can occur particularly to people who experienced trauma in childhood, and often includes both the floating above/outside your body during trauma AND the sharing your life/headspace with something that seems like an independent being - but is actually a part of the survivor's own mind. It's common for survivors' to find dealing with these other "parts" of themselves (often called alters, short for "altered state of consciousness") difficult, for a number of reasons. Parts can be sad, terrified, angry, protective, happy, or have any other emotions you can think of. They often lack awareness that the trauma/original situation is over. They can have a very narrow way of approaching the world, in some cases, and can need help to realise - usually over time - that neither they, nor you, are in danger any more and that they may no longer need to keep doing what they have always done. Parts can be the same gender as the survivor, the opposite gender, or have no gender. They can be any age (for example a young child part the same age the survivor was when a specific trauma occurred, or an older part intended to be a protector), or have no age. They can be people, animals, mythical creatures, non-human entities, inanimate objects, etc; it's all about what that part of you needed to identify with in order to feel safer in/after the trauma. Essentially from what I can remember this stems from the fact that during childhood our brains aren't yet physically able to stick all our experiences together as one cohesive whole, with everything connected; this means that when something traumatic happens to a child, it can be easier for the brain to build a wall around what happened and separate that experience or series of experiences off from the "you" and keep it exiled. This keeps those experiences from being integrated into the survivor's personality, and is why parts/alters feel as if they are different people and definitely "Not You". In a sense they aren't, because a personality is a whole bunch of experiences and emotions and memories that are all linked up - but the dissociative defense prevents these traumatised parts of the self from being linked up to the whole. This makes it easier for survivors with dissociative disorders to cope following the trauma, because either they won't remember the trauma at all, or they may feel like it happened to a part/alter and not to them. Another thing that can make it a super helpful survival mechanism is that it's easier to go through something awful with someone who cares about you and is on your side, than to be a helpless child in that situation alone. Educated therapists will work with survivors to help them create a safe, cooperative relationship with their part/s, that allows all parts of the person to feel safe and heard, and for the survivor and their parts to process the traumatic experiences that made extreme dissociation necessary. For some people this can result in the parts integrating with each other/the main part of the survivor and no longer feeling like separate people, but rather a cohesive whole; for other people the result can be that all parts of a person are happily able to peacefully and cooperatively work together, without needing to live in fear of the trauma or merge into one whole "self", and without power struggles between the different parts of the self. I hope that wasn't too much info or too difficult to read (emotionally or linguistically), and I wish you well on your journey. :)
I have a familiar spirit. She is an anthropomorphic golden retriever dog, with blue eyes, wearing a green shirt, green skirt, and she is very extroverted and empathetic.
My cat was/is my familiar, but she passed away 2 months ago. I’m finding there’s a lot of grief and fear without her body here that is getting in the way of me connecting with her or anyone really or opening up to much of my sight and ease of being. I’m afraid of what I see without her as she always helped me feel safe. I’m not sure how to reconnect or what to expect. I feel very lost. Can you share any advice on the passing of a familiars body and what to do after/what to expect? I’m very wary of what I read, a lot of info tends to be less from experience and feels a bit gaslighty. Not to make anyone bad, or say that’s intentional, just that I feel confused when my senses don’t line up with the stories and im just trying to orient. Growing up has been incredibly challenging with these experiences in this culture. I usually look in and checked with my cat and nature. There’s alot of unknown and uncertainty of safety though and without her it’s hard to orient.
Oh and about faeries, my main guide is fae and there is a "code of conduct" when working with them that csn be super useful in keeping safe. Totally not for everyone but just tossing that out there. Also i agree, best not to look for them, let them come to you. Looking for them is how folks dnd up fonding the tricky ones and Unseelie.
My Lil guy is a repeat familiar. He is the same spirit as another pet( black dog) I had. He is a cat now but I recognize him. He came to me as a stray and didn't want to eat at first just wanted to get to know me. He came back the next day and he stayed after that. He is teaching me.so much and is a protective spirit.
My familiar takes the form of a crow. He's a mischievous little man who likes to play tricks on me every so often but he always sends me signs in the form of murders of crows when I'm feeling anxious or when I need some advice. I love my little crow man.
Around 5 years ago my parents woke me up an took me to a pet adoption place. I wasn’t practicing at this time. I walked in and I saw many kittens but I saw these new arrivals. An orange tabby and a black cat. They were found in the country side when they were around a week old with their litter mates. The black cat wouldn’t let anyone touch her so I was scared to go up but at the same time I was drawn to her. So I went up to her kennel and immediately she reached through the bars. She started purring and so I asked to hold her. She hated being held by the lady working but I wanted to try. She climbed on my shoulder and purred. Her name is Lyra she is my best friend. She meditates with me, she is almost human in the way we interact, she loves my crystals, I ask her for vibes and she responds, she lays on my alter and just seems like she knows. I’m not sure if she is my familiar but I know she definitely has some connecting to my practice. Would you consider this a familiar?
My familiar is a fox as well, I don't know why, but I feel like a spiritual connection to them and I made a altar so I can call my fox familiar/spirit for guidence.
I got a demon (Incubus) as a familiar while doing meditation. It was a meditation specifically designed for attracting spirit guides. I honestly didn’t think it would work, I was a skeptic. The fact that my familiar is an incubus could be due to the reason that I work with Lilith 🖤🐍
No one might see this but i recently took in a foster black cat (not by choice) he’s only 2 weeks old as of now but he was in a weird situation when i was told he was abandoned. he was in an odd place to be dropped off by his mother, too be honest i don’t even know how a mother kitten would drop a kitten in a giant outside decorative vase that she wouldn’t get out of herself. but i digress, i was reading tarot with my mother talking to her about familiars in general, since i’m fairly new to the practice i told her it would be nice to have one. i’ve always had a black cat in mind as a familiar but wouldn’t have complained if it was anything different. after i got the call that he needed help i started nursing him-and i kid you not-the catnip falls off the shelf where it’s been sitting ALL day. so i picked it up and just put it back then again it falls at that point i’m kinda like oh that’s weird. i place it up one more time just for it to fall again a third time. so i’m like you know what this must be a sign for something. it never falls again. later on me and my friend are joking that oh he could be my familiar. he starts to get really loud. even fussy when i joked i wouldn’t have minded a roach. i have two other cats and the vibe is so much different tbh it’s like he can hear if i’m insulting him. i know he’s too young to tell but i was wondering if it’s looking like he will be my familiar given the situation.
My bun is a familiar given to me by my abusive ex, then threatened her after she showed lots of love to me. He threatened to take her to the pound if I didn't behave or let her outside to die. Gave me the courage to leave for her. I do divination and use pendulums ect. When I ask if she was a person in a past life or familiar or any questions about her it refuses to answer and spins only in circles. Do with that what you may. Also the name she came with was Willow which was already a name I loved.
Mine is definitely the rabbit. Theres always one near my house and my job, no matter where I move. I leave offerings of fruit outside my fence, and the rabbits take it. My husband is also year of the rabbit! The rabbit represents nurturing and instinct, but also hypersexuality. Sounds about right 😅
I think my familiar might be my neighbours cat.. it’s a bit crazy but despite being well looked after and loved she spends almost everyday in my house just to be with me. She’ll cry at the door or walk in if it’s open looking for me. She’s sat on me as I write this 😂 from the moment I saw her I felt connected to her.

Can spirits "die"? I am just thinking about what happens when you have a pet that is a familiar (theoretically) and it dies. If it is a pet the spirit would have a dedicated physical body, right? It wouldn't be "Fox" in general it would be "Mittens, the Cat that lives with me". Do you think in case of death the spirit would simply go back to the spirit realm and maybe come back to you if it found a new "vessel" or is this particular spirit done with it's job as your familiar and you might find a new one? I think familiars are a really interesting topic and I would love to hear your opinion on it.
I don’t know if it can be considered a familiar but during my pregnancy my s.o. and I wanted to adopt a cat and we’re going to go to the pound, but ended up not going because my morning sickness was too bad. I didn’t think much of it and later went out to eat with a group of friends, we sat in a back patio and I could hear meowing. I squeezed through a fence to an empty car wash that was near an empty lot that was just desert and a small tabby cat ran up to me and literally jumped up on me…. Naturally I fed him some ham and took him home. He’s adapted right away with our other cat and has been with us ever since. I also made sure to place an ad of a found cat and he was never claimed as to make sure I wasn’t stealing someone else’s pet lol.

i'm pretty sure my familiar is a crow i saw it in meditation and it lead me to a pick a card taot reading that told me my guide was a crow and it always appears to me in transformations and when i am going thru things or when it brings me warnings but anxiety always makes me doubt that they r my guide or something

I was wondering if you can elaborate on about Raven Grimassi that you disliked? I just recently heard about him when researching pagan authors, but I don't know much about him right now.
So - my qualm with Raven Grimassi is primarily that he wrote a book about Italian Witchcraft as well as writing other books about the "Old World Religion", but actually created more of a reconstructionist tradition. He cited a lot of things like the Aradia and some elements of Ancient Roman Tradition, but what he writes about as "Italian Witchcraft" isn't necessarily true to the folk magic we find in Italy. I admire him for creating a new branch of Italian-American reconstructionist witchcraft, but at the same time I wish he had specified to say that he was combining a lot of historical things with Wiccan-ish things with UPG and new things, versus claiming he was writing a book that was 100% to Italian witchcraft.

I have heard that if you are gifted an animal it could be a familiar. Recently I have been curious about getting q cat. I applied for a cat and somebody got it first. My dad without me knowing picked a cat he "thought I would like" and i got her. I named her Jinx she's black and white. She was immediately really close to me. I've been a witch for a while. Recently I've been unmotivated in my practice, but the few days following recieving Jinx I was extremely motivated in my practice. Does this mean anything to fellow witches?

I've always been scared of crows but have always seen them around and recently one has befriended me. It lives near my work and at lunch it waits for me on a light post. ever since i began my practice (about 2 years ago) i have been seeing crows and i can’t figure out if they’re a familiar or sent from apollo who i have been working with for about 5 months
I think my cat Morpheus is a familiar. One night, I was crying outside (I’m autistic and was having a meltdown due to emotional reasons, nature REALLY makes me feel calmer, that’s why I always go outside) when I started hearing a cat meowing, and my cats are indoor cats so I started panicking even more, thinking they had scaped, so I went inside to check and they were both there still, so I went outside again because I was still very much in a bad place. I heard the cat again, and then some of the neighbours’ dogs came and started barking at a tree, so I went there and there was a kitten, I shoeed the dogs away and asked the kitten to jump, and he did, right into my arms, he started purring immediately, he wasn’t scared at all, it was the weirdest thing. I named him Morpheus and he’s a year old now, every time I’m not feeling well, he comes to me, and he also comes every time I read tarot cards or do any witchcraft. He truly is a blessing that came to me during a very dark time. Btw, I work with Freyja now, and I think that she had been wanting to work with me for a while (including when I found Morpheus) but I didn’t see the signs, I think she might have sent him to me, since cats are one of her animals. I also have a strong connection with cat spirit in general

I did find my familiar at a pet store. I didn't go I expecting kittens to be there, I knew we were not looking to take on more pets, but this kitten just caught my attention and when I held her I was almost panicked at the though of not taking her home. She was with me for 16 incredible years and was always there for me. Emma was the most incredible cat I have had in my life.

I went looking for a cat at a shelter and met a ton different cats that day, my cat Lucy was the last one I met and she was quite aloof- but the moment I said “Maybe she’s not the one” she ‘Meowed’ super loud and say herself in my lap. As if to say “Look I have been waiting all day for you, you’re my human, it’s decided”.

Awww thank you the confirmation! A few years ago a lil wild rat bb got dropped off at my door and he was my everything. I believe the fae brought him to me as a gift and familiar. And of all the animals I've loved and lost in my life, I still feel my Treasure's presence daily.
My children (9, 5, and 2) each designed their own spiritual quests to find their familiars and name them. They appear to them as a European lynx, a very small rainbow-striped fox, and a nightingale named Starlight. My children are my inspiration.

I always thought my familiar would be a deer, until the other day: i started thinking about this cat, I don’t know why since i already have four. But i feel that she’s coming home. I don't think they were my familiars but two of my pets were definitely something. I considered them my heart animals; my horse would often appear in my dreams and my cat came to me in an unexpected way - I had adopted a different cat but she had been promised to another family as well. They shelter asked if I could adopt my Hamilton. Part of me feels as though he was sent to me to help him more than myself. He ended up being very sick and I'm fairly certain he had been abused previously. I love my other animals but these two were just different.
When I was little, I found a mummified frog in my grandparents garage. My grandfather put it into a little box for me. I was really happy with it but then forgot about it at some point. Yesterday I was looking for witchy things in my drawers since I just started with it and I found it back and suddenly felt ... something. I think that frog might be my familiar and it's waiting until I get a little more adept at sensing and interacting with spirits before it starts working with me. Just a hunch.
My cat came to me when I was at my lowest, both of us needed help and I needed love. He was a stray kitten abandoned with his sister, I raised them both and recently lost his sister due to cancer. This cat is with me all the time and when I got my green witch book he was all over it, I opened the box and he wanted to see evey edge of it. I don't know if I would say he is a familiar as my connection with him is what I consider "true love" it is pure and genuine effection. I see him as just a regular animal, nothing more than another intelligent being to spend my time with on this earth. Which isn't a bad thing, I love animals so me looking to him as just an animal means something more natural and pure to me than thinking of my baby as a spirit.
I do however belive that it will show itself as a cat, I've had several experiences (seeing two yearling bobcats within 2 years) and my emotional response to the sounds of lions calling for each other. I genuinely believe if I ever have a familiar it will be a cat of some kind.
In certain contexts daemons fairies and familiars were under the same category and sometimes interchangeable(not that I agree or use them in that way). See Owen Davies work on English cunning mountains and Emma willy cunning folk and familiar spirits. “Learned conjurors with their grimoires commanded demons, spirits and angels to come to their aid, the more humble could, instead, call upon the services of the fairies”. Having a physical familiar as a pet can be very painful because they can die trying to save you. You may gifted with a familiar from a deity. Also it can be a demon too.
My familiar is a cat. My familiar took the form of my pet. I went to the pound and I already had a cat picked out, and I instantly connected with him, and he absolutely has been by my side. When you know you know and if you’re open I think you absolutely find them.
Well I didn't really "buy" Abby I bought 20 dollars worth of cat supplies (comes with free kitten!) And she lived with me for 16 years ❤️ she's my spirit familiar now
Could it be possible if a spirit guide could be a familiar? I have one spirit guide, and often associate him as a fox as well lol. To me he's kind of a trickster, cunning (such as a fox) and like he usually comes in my dreams in a fox form (usually as a bright orange fox, or like redish-orange). Usually I chat with him when needed, sometimes he'll send me videos of fox's, never irl foxes (i don't think i will ever see a fox irl in my area xD) but yeah. He came in pretty suddenly like "oh hey, nice to meet ya" and ofc I was alarmed but his energy was alr, didn't show/feel any negative intent so yeah. I personally would say your spirit guide is a guide no matter what form they take. Familiars take the form of an animal and helps the witch with whatever spell or ritual or sends messages to them. They can do many things and are more personal than spirit guides. My familiar personally helps the connection between me and my deities and will also help with my craft.

I got my familiar through working at a pet store. I'd fallen in love with virtually all animals there, but at the end of the day I had no real attachment to them. Then one day, this ratty looking, angry kitten came in(we took community cats, fixed them up, and sold them at-cost, to help keep the local shelter from overflowing), and this kitten had to be alone, cause he played nice with no one. My coworkers hated him, which never happened for them, but somehow I fell head over heels for this angry kitten, who wanted nothing to do with anyone. For some reason I just couldn't leave him. The idea of him going home with someone else gave me severe anxiety, to the point I had no choice but to bring him home. Now, after all the patience it took to heal his obvious trauma, he's nothing but the biggest love bug whos best friend was my roommates hamster, and he spends his time returning the favour and helping me to heal emotionally, and access my mental powers.
He came to me at the very start of my journey, before I even knew what path I'd taken, and I hope he will be here for many, many more 🧡

I've always felt very connected to cats. My grandfather passed away very suddenly the day before my birthday when I was about to turn four. We were celebrating my birthday in the garden and suddenly he had a heart attack. Around one year later, a stray cat showed up on our porch. She was very small, famished and had a broken tail. We gave her some water, the next day we gave her some milk, the next day we gave her some meat, etc. Then suddenly, on my birthday, she gave birth to three kittens. We kept them and to this day, eighteen years later, we still have cats even though some have come and gone. They're truly my babies.
I'm still trying to figure out my beliefs. I don't know if it was my grandpa looking out for me, my grandpa reincarnating or some deity or the universe looking out for me and sending me a message. I just know that it has always felt like too much of a coincidence for me to just brush it off as nothing significant.

My familiar appeared when I was in my barn and my dog, Blue, was barking at a cat. I shooed him out of the barn and this grey cat with a moon shaped spot on her chest just ran into my lap. I didn't know about witchcraft then. I named her Luna after the moon and my favorite harry potter character, but she loves me mostly. A week later, I learned about witchcraft. So I believe that me meeting Luna lead me to witchcraft.
My personal familiar is a phoenix. From communicating with him I've learned his name and also learned all about phoenixes and bred them and created tons of other species of them and I have categorized them into different taxons. My phoenix is 8.5 feet tall and resides in the astral plane with the rest of his kind.
I really liked the familiars in the Netflix Sabrina. The nod to history where her aunts chose from traditional animals being offered by Satan/the church, but Sabrina went out on her own onto the woods and asked if anyone wanted to work with her. I thought it was fun
My familiar is a specific type of cat with a ringed tail, I didn't realise it until about a year into my practice but when I was in need I would always see a cat with a marked tail. Birds are also messengers to me specifically white birds which aren't common where I live, I always know when I see a dead white bird around my property that something important (usually bad) is going to happen.

I had found Opal (my familiar, a little lynx point cat with blue eyes) crying beside the road hiding in a hollowed out log when she was just under a year old. This was around the same time I began to look into paganism and witchcraft as a whole. She’s been with me since then (and she’s now closer to three or four) and often appears in dreams to deliver messages (along side helping with spell work :])
I’m looking forward to finding my Familiar, the impatient part of me want to know right now but I understand that it can take time. They will appear when they want. I’ve already encountered my Spirit Guide but as I’m relatively new to the craft, I’m not rushing anything. I am still learning, but I never realized that familiars could be spirits that appear as animals in nature that you come across. I’ve had 3 experiences (that I can recall) of deer. I live in Tennessee and the deer population here is ridiculous BUT I have had personal experiences with them. The most incredible one was a deer couple I came across in the woods down the street from my house. I was standing in the creek and they were a few feet away from me. All three of us just looked at each other in silence. And because I’m whimsical and all that shit I decided to just bow my head to them thinking somehow that would show them I wasn’t a threat. And to my complete surprise, the female deer did it back to me. And we continued on. It was amazing. And now with this new information on familiars, it makes sense to me now.
I’m pretty sure mine comes to be as bee’s. My nick name from my late grandpa was SheBee. I have no idea why...but now since starting my spiritual journey, I have started to love bees for some reason. I got these cute earrings of bees and wear them so much I now consider it as a part of my work with my familiar. Bee’s have shown up a lot in some of my tarot decks and I asked the universe to show me a bee (it’s winter here btw) and the next day after asking, I was at work moving something and there was a dead bee.

My story is a bit odd, during a physical trauma at around 6 years old or so, My guardian angel pulled me into the astral plane as a way to keep me distracted, at that time, another entity witnessed my being assaulted and chose to stay with me from then on as a protector, at around age 9 this entity began to materialize when I was stressed or angry, by the time I was 19 it had begun to physically manipulate objects in my mundane life, when I was 20 I visited a phsycic church, the director and I shared a conversation about him, I had named him, he was getting far too strong and opinionated, we decided to let him know I was no longer 6 or in danger, and he needed permission to release me and move on to his own purpose, I called him my familiar for lack of a better word. I miss him sometimes, I'm now 50, and know he was becoming dangerous, I gave him far too much power over my thoughts, over my reality, I know if I'm approached again, I will have a far better understanding of boundaries etc, wondering if anyone has some more insight.
Bit of an essay incoming! But I do recognise this so wanted to throw in what I know! I'm trying to put down everything I can remember from reading about this stuff and I'm not a professional so I may get some stuff wrong.
(Other resources for getting insight: look up "dissociation and trauma" to get a LOT of educational resources that will probably explain things better than me. A good youtube channel is DissociaDID, and an amazingly thorough book is "Coping with Trauma-Related Dissociation: Skills Training for Patients and Therapists" by Suzette Boon, Kathy Steele, and Onno Van Der Hart.)
Anyways, what you descibed sounds EXACTLY like a dissociative response to trauma, for example Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) or Other Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD - it's the most commonly diagnosed form I think); it's a known, non-spiritual/supernatural thing that can occur particularly to people who experienced trauma in childhood, and often includes both the floating above/outside your body during trauma AND the sharing your life/headspace with something that seems like an independent being - but is actually a part of the survivor's own mind. It's common for survivors' to find dealing with these other "parts" of themselves (often called alters, short for "altered state of consciousness") difficult, for a number of reasons. Parts can be sad, terrified, angry, protective, happy, or have any other emotions you can think of. They often lack awareness that the trauma/original situation is over. They can have a very narrow way of approaching the world, in some cases, and can need help to realise - usually over time - that neither they, nor you, are in danger any more and that they may no longer need to keep doing what they have always done.
Parts can be the same gender as the survivor, the opposite gender, or have no gender. They can be any age (for example a young child part the same age the survivor was when a specific trauma occurred, or an older part intended to be a protector), or have no age. They can be people, animals, mythical creatures, non-human entities, inanimate objects, etc; it's all about what that part of you needed to identify with in order to feel safer in/after the trauma.
Essentially from what I can remember this stems from the fact that during childhood our brains aren't yet physically able to stick all our experiences together as one cohesive whole, with everything connected; this means that when something traumatic happens to a child, it can be easier for the brain to build a wall around what happened and separate that experience or series of experiences off from the "you" and keep it exiled.
This keeps those experiences from being integrated into the survivor's personality, and is why parts/alters feel as if they are different people and definitely "Not You". In a sense they aren't, because a personality is a whole bunch of experiences and emotions and memories that are all linked up - but the dissociative defense prevents these traumatised parts of the self from being linked up to the whole. This makes it easier for survivors with dissociative disorders to cope following the trauma, because either they won't remember the trauma at all, or they may feel like it happened to a part/alter and not to them.
Another thing that can make it a super helpful survival mechanism is that it's easier to go through something awful with someone who cares about you and is on your side, than to be a helpless child in that situation alone.
Educated therapists will work with survivors to help them create a safe, cooperative relationship with their part/s, that allows all parts of the person to feel safe and heard, and for the survivor and their parts to process the traumatic experiences that made extreme dissociation necessary. For some people this can result in the parts integrating with each other/the main part of the survivor and no longer feeling like separate people, but rather a cohesive whole; for other people the result can be that all parts of a person are happily able to peacefully and cooperatively work together, without needing to live in fear of the trauma or merge into one whole "self", and without power struggles between the different parts of the self.

I met my familiar couple weeks ago.
My cat was/is my familiar, but she passed away 2 months ago. I’m finding there’s a lot of grief and fear without her body here that is getting in the way of me connecting with her or anyone really or opening up to much of my sight and ease of being. I’m afraid of what I see without her as she always helped me feel safe. I’m not sure how to reconnect or what to expect. I feel very lost. Can you share any advice on the passing of a familiars body and what to do after/what to expect? I’m very wary of what I read, a lot of info tends to be less from experience and feels a bit gaslighty. Not to make anyone bad, or say that’s intentional, just that I feel confused when my senses don’t line up with the stories and im just trying to orient. Growing up has been incredibly challenging with these experiences in this culture. I usually look in and checked with my cat and nature. There’s alot of unknown and uncertainty of safety though and without her it’s hard to orient.
I had a parakeet fly into my house a few months ago. I didn't like birds. I tried to re-home but..Now he's my best confidant
Oh and about faeries, my main guide is fae and there is a "code of conduct" when working with them that csn be super useful in keeping safe. Totally not for everyone but just tossing that out there. My Lil guy is a repeat familiar. He is the same spirit as another pet( black dog) I had. He is a cat now but I recognize him. He came to me as a stray and didn't want to eat at first just wanted to get to know me. He came back the next day and he stayed after that. He is teaching me.so much and is a protective spirit.
My familiar takes the form of a crow. He's a mischievous little man who likes to play tricks on me every so often but he always sends me signs in the form of murders of crows when I'm feeling anxious or when I need some advice. I love my little crow man.
Around 5 years ago my parents woke me up an took me to a pet adoption place. I wasn’t practicing at this time. I walked in and I saw many kittens but I saw these new arrivals. An orange tabby and a black cat. They were found in the country side when they were around a week old with their litter mates. The black cat wouldn’t let anyone touch her so I was scared to go up but at the same time I was drawn to her. So I went up to her kennel and immediately she reached through the bars. She started purring and so I asked to hold her. She hated being held by the lady working but I wanted to try. She climbed on my shoulder and purred. Her name is Lyra she is my best friend. She meditates with me, she is almost human in the way we interact, she loves my crystals, I ask her for vibes and she responds, she lays on my alter and just seems like she knows. I’m not sure if she is my familiar but I know she definitely has some connecting to my practice. Would you consider this a familiar?

I got a demon (Incubus) as a familiar while doing meditation. It was a meditation specifically designed for attracting spirit guides. I honestly didn’t think it would work, I was a skeptic. The fact that my familiar is an incubus could be due to the reason that I work with Lilith 🖤🐍

No one might see this but i recently took in a foster black cat (not by choice) he’s only 2 weeks old as of now but he was in a weird situation when i was told he was abandoned. he was in an odd place to be dropped off by his mother, too be honest i don’t even know how a mother kitten would drop a kitten in a giant outside decorative vase that she wouldn’t get out of herself. but i digress, i was reading tarot with my mother talking to her about familiars in general, since i’m fairly new to the practice i told her it would be nice to have one. i’ve always had a black cat in mind as a familiar but wouldn’t have complained if it was anything different. after i got the call that he needed help i started nursing him-and i kid you not-the catnip falls off the shelf where it’s been sitting ALL day. so i picked it up and just put it back then again it falls at that point i’m kinda like oh that’s weird. i place it up one more time just for it to fall again a third time. so i’m like you know what this must be a sign for something. it never falls again. later on me and my friend are joking that oh he could be my familiar. he starts to get really loud. even fussy when i joked i wouldn’t have minded a roach. i have two other cats and the vibe is so much different tbh it’s like he can hear if i’m insulting him. i know he’s too young to tell but i was wondering if it’s looking like he will be my familiar given the situation.
My bun is a familiar given to me by my abusive ex, then threatened her after she showed lots of love to me. He threatened to take her to the pound if I didn't behave or let her outside to die. Gave me the courage to leave for her. I do divination and use pendulums ect. When I ask if she was a person in a past life or familiar or any questions about her it refuses to answer and spins only in circles. Do with that what you may. Also the name she came with was Willow which was already a name I loved.
Mine is definitely the rabbit. Theres always one near my house and my job, no matter where I move. I leave offerings of fruit outside my fence, and the rabbits take it. My husband is also year of the rabbit!

I think my familiar might be my neighbours cat.. it’s a bit crazy but despite being well looked after and loved she spends almost everyday in my house just to be with me. She’ll cry at the door or walk in if it’s open looking for me. She’s sat on me as I write this 😂 from the moment I saw her I felt connected to her.

Can spirits "die"? I am just thinking about what happens when you have a pet that is a familiar (theoretically) and it dies. If it is a pet the spirit would have a dedicated physical body, right? It wouldn't be "Fox" in general it would be "Mittens, the Cat that lives with me". Do you think in case of death the spirit would simply go back to the spirit realm and maybe come back to you if it found a new "vessel" or is this particular spirit done with it's job as your familiar and you might find a new one? I think familiars are a really interesting topic and I would love to hear your opinion on it.

I don’t know if it can be considered a familiar but during my pregnancy my s.o. and I wanted to adopt a cat and we’re going to go to the pound, but ended up not going because my morning sickness was too bad. I didn’t think much of it and later went out to eat with a group of friends, we sat in a back patio and I could hear meowing. I squeezed through a fence to an empty car wash that was near an empty lot that was just desert and a small tabby cat ran up to me and literally jumped up on me…. Naturally I fed him some ham and took him home. He’s adapted right away with our other cat and has been with us ever since. I also made sure to place an ad of a found cat and he was never claimed as to make sure I wasn’t stealing someone else’s pet lol.
i think my familiar is crows. (All crows, in general.) every time I'm sad or something bad is going to happen in the future, I always see two or three crows staring right at me! it's so weird, but yeah.

i'm pretty sure my familiar is a crow i saw it in meditation and it lead me to a pick a card taot reading that told me my guide was a crow and it always appears to me in transformations and when i am going thru things or when it brings me warnings but anxiety always makes me doubt that they r my guide or something

So I moved away from home and into a friend’s house. Their cat keeps jumping onto my lap and purring and won’t leave me alone. I also mumbled “are you my familiar or something. I was wondering if you can elaborate on about Raven Grimassi that you disliked? I just recently heard about him when researching pagan authors, but I don't know much about him right now.
So - my qualm with Raven Grimassi is primarily that he wrote a book about Italian Witchcraft as well as writing other books about the "Old World Religion", but actually created more of a reconstructionist tradition. He cited a lot of things like the Aradia and some elements of Ancient Roman Tradition, but what he writes about as "Italian Witchcraft" isn't necessarily true to the folk magic we find in Italy. I admire him for creating a new branch of Italian-American reconstructionist witchcraft, but at the same time I wish he had specified to say that he was combining a lot of historical things with Wiccan-ish things with UPG and new things, versus claiming he was writing a book that was 100% to Italian witchcraft.

I’m taking notes on my book of shadows and I was thinking I have a familiar, but it isn’t an animal, but it might be a spirit, but it comes in the form of a butterfly. Does anyone else believe that insects and bugs can also be a familiar because whenever I go out on a bike ride, I always see monarchs and black and white butterflies then again it is still nice outside to go biking etc. but I’d like to know if there’s anyone out there that also find some other things as familiar as well?

I’m pretty sure the wolf or some kind of canine is my familiar. I have always been around them ever since I was a baby I lean heavily more towards them then cats or other pets. But I’m still not sure because I’m really terrible at noticing stuff like that 😐 my last dog who died was a stray that followed me around but I’m still not sure 😅

I have heard that if you are gifted an animal it could be a familiar. Recently I have been curious about getting q cat. I applied for a cat and somebody got it first. My dad without me knowing picked a cat he "thought I would like" and i got her. I named her Jinx she's black and white. She was immediately really close to me. I've been a witch for a while. Recently I've been unmotivated in my practice, but the few days following recieving Jinx I was extremely motivated in my practice. Does this mean anything to fellow witches?
