Richard here...What you can't really see because of the water on my lens is that I was actually hitching a free ride up to the break off a Mike's Bikes rider, but he ended up washing out and crashing off in the mud. That left me in no man's land, so I decided it was better to put in the effort to bridge solo, rather than fall back to the field. I also tried to pull out of the rotation and reshuffle just outside of 1km to go, pretending I was blowing my nose, but Nick was too smart for that trick and followed me.
Bridging up was the right move Richard. But later in the break, even if you had confidence in the sprint, you and Zach should have capitalized on the numerical advantage you had by sitting on, attacking, opening gaps, etc.. Easy to say from a 72f office sitting on a desk chair lol.
@@NorCalCycling yeah you're right. Right after the race we discussed how he should've attacked somewhere around 1km since he was 4th wheel. It would've forced either Nick or Yuriy (or both) to chase and given me a free ride into the finish. Oh well...live and learn.
The first lap was brutal...from 55 degrees and partially sunny to 38 degrees and sleet and hail in like 15min..20-30mph gusty wind and amount of rain was brutal...epic day and actually tons of fun
Collegiate racing.. fun times :) Really great way to enter some free/subsidized races. Only issue was the amount of travelling and driving all up and down Cali.
@NorCalCycling how’s the racing scene there? I hate the scene here in NC it’s hard to try and grind my way to Cat 1 here. Contemplating a move to there, kinda following a dream
Always a pleasure to watch these videos and commentary. Question from Canada: Did any riders from your region participate at road nats? If so, how did they do? p.s. Superb ride by the guy from his home state to grab 2nd in the road race. What a thrill that must have been to stay away with WT riders and hang in there till the end.
MG Gailitis I am a late startup CAT4 and I can tell you on NorCal (Sacramento) weekend group rides there is often more US National or World bands than I can count on two hands...many are Masters and with a few National and World tour Pros joining from time to time I'm guessing there is more puke on the side of the road than any other region in US
Hi I’m new here, I’m sure you have gone over this and I haven’t looked to far back. But what cameras are you using on the bike with those overlays? I would like something like that for my riding. And love the videos I have seen so far, makes me want to look into these kind of races. Where should I look for these kind of crits?
These videos are stunning, good work. I had a look at getting a camera setup for my racing here in Australia. Not only do I need to apply for a camera license, but as part of that application, I have to agree to hand over all footage within 48hrs of the governing cycling body's written request, and not publish anything that brings the sport into disrepute (...?). I can only use the camera if approved by the race organiser and the race commissaire. Any infraction incurs a 4 week suspension, doubled for each subsequent infraction. Some clubs have standing rules that you cannot use a camera at all. I think I'll stick to watching you guys instead.
I dig the content, only complaint is in so many videos you show the ending in the first 10 seconds. PLEASE stop. It takes away so much more than it adds to your videos.

You see that guy go off the road on the corner - oi where ya goin'!?
Raced here several times. Not uncommon to overcook a corner.soft landings though.

Having said that we have definitely gone through a downturn in participation in races the last 5 years...Juniors are looking strong though
Get better soon Jeff!
