  • In this episode I talk to meteorologist, documentary film producer, TV host, writer, author, university lecturer, public speaker and media personality Richard Zurawski about climate change - how it has affected agriculture over the last few decades, what to expect in the coming decades, and how this all relates to home gardening.

When we were younger we used to hang out on Blomidon Beach on Minas Basin, NS. In winter is was so cool, because the ice would fuse and be piled up 2 stories high in some places, all carved by the tides, with caves we could walk through. You could see the sun shining through the ice illuminating the caves, and it was surreal and beautiful. This phenomena occurred every year starting in mid January. Ended up moving to the city about 35 years ago.
I moved back to the area around 2000, and there wasn't even a chunk of ice the size of a golf ball washing up on the shore. I spent 15 years there, and that was consistently the case. Acadia University did some studies on the quickly changing biology of the mud flats, and apparently the fact those large ice chunks were not scraping and mixing the silty mud with the tides caused the buildup of organic material that caused anoxia due to the decaying which is why all the shore worms and clams are no longer there either.
Not much anyone can do anything about now, but I miss the amazing winter scenery on the Minas shoreline.

great podcast greg , I am not sold that we can solve the climate crisis without causing economic collapse of historical proportion. The economic web that holds us together is made with oil and gas and I do not see how it is possible to change that, without a radical reduction in our lifestyle. I also find that when you try and do good things in the typical consumerist fashion you just end up trading problems. If you look at home gardening you see something great for sustainability, but when you investigate further you see an industry riddled with single use plastics..I am not saying we are doomed but we still don't have a clue how to actually tackle this problem in an economically safe way.

I see nuclear energy as the solution in the short term. In the long term I think hydrogen fuel is the way - but it takes enormous energy to separate hydrogen from water - so either nuclear energy or future solar energy may allow us that capability. The economic web that holds us together is cheap energy - which just happens to be oil and gas right now. When a viable alternative is found, they will be gradually left behind just like coal. Anyway - there is so much politics and money weaved into this mess I think it will be a miracle if we ever find our way out.

@@maritimegardening4887you are correct that the best short term remedy for our energy problem is nuclear energy. I would have liked you to ask your guest if he was in favor of nuclear energy. Why do I think he would be opposed to such a suggestion.

Edmonton 13,000 years ago was covered with 2 km of ice. Pretty inhospitable! Nearing the solstice we are still getting frost warnings at night. The climate always has, and always will, change.

I don't think Ocean Salinity will be a problem.
    Think about it:
How much fresh water are all the rivers in the world dumping into the ocean? That doesn't change salinity of the oceans.
The reason oceans are salt is because the only way water leaves is through evaporation. Salts are leached from the land and left in the oceans when the water evaporates.
