There were some players who played other codes that transitioned across and others who played their original code on the Saturday and then played gridiron on the Sunday. The growth in numbers came with marketing that coincided with NFL being broadcast on TV. The VGFL worked very hard on marketing to TV and radio.
How was there more clubs back then compared to now
Aussie rules wasn't professional. Soccer wasn't even a thing back then and Rugby, virtually non existent. All key factors.

@jackj9816 that's what we are saying. More people played due to the fact the other sports hadn't evolved to what they are now.

@@gridironvic I was playing junior in 2013 and I swear there was a lot more teams then. Did covid kill a lot of the teams or something?
