The Risky Game of Replacing Beloved Theme Park Rides

  • When it comes to amusement parks, change is inevitable. Universal Studios Orlando and Walt Disney World often face this challenge head-on. Case in point, Splash Mountain becoming Tiana's Bayou Adventure. Yet, every change comes with a risk. Take, for instance, the beloved Jaws ride. Once a staple of Universal Studios Florida, the iconic ride was retired to make way for the wizarding world of Harry Potter. Diagon Alley now stands where Jaws once ruled. While the transformation brought new life to the park, it left fans of the Jaws ride longing for the past.
    Not far away, Walt Disney World in Orlando also grapples with the balance between nostalgia and novelty. Splash Mountain, a cherished classic, is undergoing a transformation into Tiana's Bayou Adventure. This shift aims to infuse new life into the Magic Kingdom, but the decision to replace Splash Mountain Disney World has been met with mixed reactions. Fans of the original ride reminisce about its unique charm, even as they look forward to the new adventure awaiting them. Disney's other parks, including Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney Hollywood Studios, also face similar challenges. Each change is a gamble, hoping to capture the magic that made Disneyland a global phenomenon while keeping the experience fresh for new generations. Meanwhile, Universal’s latest venture, Epic Universe Orlando, promises to push the boundaries of theme park innovation. And across the country, Universal Studios Hollywood mirrors these changes, continually updating its offerings to compete with the likes of Cedar Point. Cedar Point, home to the legendary Top Thrill Dragster, is undergoing its own transformation, reimagining the ride as Top Thrill 2. This revamp aims to thrill guests in new ways while paying homage to its predecessor.
    In the end, the risky game of replacing beloved theme park rides is a delicate dance. As Universal Orlando, Disney World, and other parks like Cedar Point navigate these waters, they must balance the desire for innovation with the need to preserve the magic that has made them icons in the world of theme parks. Each decision shapes the future of these enchanted lands, ensuring that the spirit of adventure lives on for generations to come.

    The best replacement failure was when Disney tried to reimagine Journey into Imagination in 1998, without Figment, only for guests to complain so rabidly that Disney had to put Figment back into the ride.

    • @MrEightThreeOne
      @MrEightThreeOne Месяц назад +11

      The funny thing is, I still think Journey Into Imagination With Figment is one of the best examples of a ride replacement failure. Sure, what's there is *better* than what preceded it, but it still thoroughly pales in comparison to what was there to begin with. The ride track is already shortened so it has less to work with by default, and like the ride is *serviceable* but doesn't really do anything to inspire imagination and general consensus is that it's an okay ride but most people wouldn't put it on their must-ride list. And I think what really drives it home is that the arts scene of the original ride -- literally one room of it -- has more to look at and see than the entirety of the current ride, which is full of a bunch of blank unused space. I guess I'd have been a little more forgiving of it had it been a temporary fix to the poorly received second ride like it was supposed to be, but it's now outlived both predecessors combined.
      Before any of you start accusing me of being blinded by nostalgia -- I never went on the original ride. Even if I had, I would have been way too young to remember it because it closed when I was only three. I only know of it from ride-through videos and I absolutely adore it, and I genuinely think it was a huge mistake to close it.

      @MrEightThreeOne Месяц назад +1

      @@josephbrown9685 Oh yeah, and I was backing my point up by saying I have zero nostalgia for the original -- believe me when I say I'm so envious of people like you who got to experience it. My serious condolences to you if you ever had to witness the atrocity that was the second version, haha.
      As far as Splash goes, while I personally feel closing it was a mistake (believe me, I have a lot I could say about Disney replacing rides when they so desperately need more capacity right now), I don't know if I would put those two decisions on the same level. At least when Splash was closed, they had the budget and plans to replace it with something that could match it (whether the end product did or not is a matter of opinion, but you can't deny the animatronics they made for it are really impressive). JII was replaced with something that was done on a really lousy budget thanks to Kodak struggling at the time -- the follow-up being inferior was virtually a foregone conclusion.

      Same here. In 2017, when I was a stupid 12 year old, I had no clue of the rides existence until I visited the park with my family. While I wanted to go on Big Thunder Mountain, everyone else want to do Spalsh Maintain, to say the least, I wasn't happy with that. I just saw it was some water ride, those were my thoughts until I actually rode it. Wow. What a ride it was. The music, the characters, the colourful cartoony set pieces, the scary music up the final drop, I fell in love with it, and to this day its still the best water rides and Dark rides I've ever been on.
      Sadly this was the only time I ever rode it, so when the retheme was announced, it was disheartening, especially finally seeing the final product on RUclips.

You get rid of an older and less popular ride (turnpike), people complain. You replace a popular ride (old mill), people complain. As usual, the wokies are very vocal online, but then don't support the things they want. The purple-haired, septum ring having weirdos dwelling their parents' basements don't have the financial means to support the things they say they want. They just like to destroy everything that is good. That is the goal of the woke mind virus. It's destroying everything we love one thing at a time. Disney has one of the worst infections and there is no vaccine for that.

      The ride itself was great, its source material was not. Having watched its source material, the ride basically contains only the most sanitized, ambiguous, and safe elements of that film.
      I love Splash Mountain, it was a family favorite ride that 3 generations of my family made a point to ride every time we went to the parks, but it was weird once you knew what it came from and what the original story was supposed to be about. (Hint: The message is basically telling black people to stay on their farms or risk getting lynched) and given that undercurrent I definitely don’t blame Disney for wanting to change it.
      I just think they went about it in the worst way possible, which generally their PR lately has been generally terrible. Instead of saying “we are getting rid of splash mountain” they should have said “we are re-theming splash mountain” and renamed it Tiana’s Splash Mountain or something. Presentation is everything and even if the end product was exactly the same as what we’ve gotten, I think more people would be willing to accept it if it was seen as an evolution of splash mountain rather than a replacement.

    It's always sad when an attraction that was good closes, even if the decision was objectively the correct one like cases of Jaws and Dueling Dragons. Where I think Disney is dropping the ball is in the times it reuses the same layout as an old attraction for newer attractions without taking into account how the story and layout would actually go together. Frozen Ever After and Tiana's Bayou Adventure are the 2 big offenders with their drops no longer making sense in the context of the rides' story. Tiana especially has a story that clashes with the layout instead of being enhanced by it since it never does anything to build up to the big drop like Splash Mountain did so well. The ride would be better without that big drop since the story and layout would no longer be so at odds. They didn't use a story that complemented the 'log flume with big ending drop' layout, but went with a story that was only suited for a 'no tension or threat' boat ride like Navi River Journey or It's a Small World. The drop is now like having a 50-foot drop added to the end of It's a Small World for no reason instead of the climax of the ride.
    Though nothing will ever be as bad as Fast and Furious Supercharged replacing not 1 but 2 attractions that were better.

    • @CanonessEllinor
      @CanonessEllinor Месяц назад

      I’ve read some theorizing that the reason Tiana’s storyline has no tension is because it’s designed as a “princess” ride first and foremost, and as someone who spent her childhood consuming “girl” media, I can kinda see it. Commercial media aimed at girls like the Disney Princess brand tends to produce stories that are notoriously free of any kind of conflict, and the story of this ride would fit right into the pages of Disney Princess magazine. It’s a “we gotta prepare for the big party” story, which is a super common archetype in fluffy girl media.
      The issue, of course, cones when this kind of storyline is superimposed onto a thrill ride with a big drop. I honestly worry that this ride is going to traumatize a lot of little girls who love Tiana and thought they were on a harmless dark ride right until they get subjected to a big drop out of nowhere.

It was also very hard to take care of. You wanna be someone who barely gets paid to try to take care of that nightmare. I love animatronics but I wouldn't wanna have to fix them daily... especially the Splash mountain ones. They were covered in nasty slimy stuff and probably mold too. I think we should appreciate how long that ride lasted. And hey. It's still in Japan. I actually think Tokyo Disney land's splash mountain is the best. Like that one scene where Brer Fox is about to trap brer rabbit looks CRAZY. HE LOOKS REAL. I was so shocked lol

Disney is falling. Some of the stocks are falling. Most of their movies that they are making now are trash and are making them loose money. If you think they are gonna spend tons of money on ONE old ride you are crazy lol. Also saying that it wasn't badly maintained in the US is weird when you can see the characters looking the completely wrong way/shaking so bad it looks like they are about to fall in the water and there is literally video evidence of the Log Flumes SINKING into the water so bad that people had to jump out before they went with it. I think an issue is how a change may impact the overall feel of a park area...or even the entire park! Like, of the original EPCOT Center attractions the Energy pavilion was probably the one that aged the worst, and the Guardians coaster is a very fun ride system. Still, it has a bit of a "does this belong at EPCOT?" vibe going that effects the feel of the area it's in, the kind of thing you might only pick up on subconsiously. Maybe a coaster based on the concept of the Big Bang and the creation of energy would feel different, but just "let's glide around with these movie characters" feels very different.
    For me, I'm one of those "tired of all the IPs in the park" types; Guardians is a strong ride, for sure, but its presence is a reminder that *this* is the direction Disney's taking and that original attractions aren't likely on the docket any time soon, and it has an effect on how I interact with the park as a whole.
    ETA: Ooh, also have to point out - apparently, "Horizons was built on a sinkhole and was going to fall in" is not really accurate! The ride had definitely stopped getting care, however, when GE's sponsorship lapsed and Disney let the ride fall into only seasonal usage. Then HP came along and was willing to sponsor Mission: Space.

    The theme park could then sell the ride content on multiple platforms so that the experience would not be lost.
    I think this would be a no-brainer. I recall back to the future ride video was available as extra content on one of the DVD releases. The fans get some of what they lost, and the theme park company makes a profit.

And it is a stunning showpiece of the fact that Disney's current Imagineering, really really sucks. They insulted the fans and accused them of some really hateful things, things that would be legally actionable if directed at an individual, just as a matter of their normal current marketing. Love or hate Disney, but calling your consumers "Racists", "Sexists", "Misogynistic", "Homophobic" and whatever else, for EVERY ONE OF YOUR PRODUCT RELEASES FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS, is not a path to profit. I may be strange in that way. But "Don't Piss Off The People That Give You The Money" was one of those old Business 101 rules. And Splash Mountain is worse, because Tiana's whateverthefuq it's called, is a really horrible ride. It fails to tell an interesting story. It's Superstar Limo 2.0The entire ride story is a 2 year olds tea party without any flow, drama or tension. It sucks.

      If the ride had audio animatronics then I would agree with you but for me the theming feels very similar to six flag taking an existing coaster and theming it to a superhero. California Screamin’ also fit with the theme of California while it was a steel coaster and not a wooden one the imaginers made the supports look like they were for a wooden coaster. The ride also wouldn’t have been as good if it didn’t have an onboard soundtrack. Fortunately it did. Disney coaster like space mountain do a good job of telling a story through visuals not by onboard dialogue. It took my dad riding the incredicoaster five times before he finally understood the story. My point is Disney coasters are better when they show through visuals or through the way you’re moving as opposed to telling through dialogue. That’s why I think California Screamin was better than the incredicoaster.

    9:20 The actual reason for Top Thrill 2 closing prematurely has to do with the wheels. They’re having to manufacture new wheels that can better dissipate the heat generated. It’s similar to a problem that Test Track initially had where the tires wore out so fast they had to be replaced daily, so they switched to an improved tire design with a more resilient compound.

    I think it’s important to also look at the cost of some of these rides (kind of how big corporations would do). Jaws: incredible ride system and animatronics. Also jaws incredibly expensive to run (sharks will naturally need maintenance and them being in water only makes it more expensive. Ride system will need work and again being in water makes it expensive. Gas to fuel the boats is expensive. And paying employees to be the skipper is expensive. )
    Splash mountain: just want to say this first off, Disney ignored maintenance in the ending months of it being splash mountain. That will naturally make some aspects more expensive. Anyways, animatronics with fur, in or close to water will never really be good. It makes up keep of the figures more expensive. I’ve had friends who have been ride operators or maintenance employees for the ride and they said that anytime there was a problem they would fix it with duct tape (maybe not literally but like putting a bandaid on a cut that needs stitches). I heard that there were leaks and the animatronics would stop working and they would just remove them because they knew it would close soon. Also naturally projections are going to be cheaper than animatronics.
    Anyways, at the end of the day projections will always be cheaper than animatronics (see what replaced great movie ride).

I think the backlash at first was brutal , but the way of communication by the park and the details they hauled over to the new version. It will be incredible. Maybe the rides were mostly better at IOA (on their own) and less dependent on IP (except Suess), And, originally IOA had only two walk-through attractions out of 13; USF had 4 out of 7. Only kong, Jaws, BTTF (abit later), and Hanna Barbara were what we consider "rides".

    Are you trying to convince us to not hate on Tiana's Bayou Adventure? Cause that's what it sounds like. Nobody complained about Splash Mountain absolutely nobody. When droves of big name actors showed up to ride it the last time that should tell you how loved it was. When Japan refuses to "update" their Splash Mountain that should tell you how loved it was. Now that Disneyland Japan is getting more foreign guests than ever before just to ride their Splash Mountain that should tell you how loved it was. Disney Stock is now tanking not to mention park attendance decline. It isn't about pleasing everyone. That's impossible. It's about pleasing the majority. It's about having more people who love the ride and ride it than more who hate the ride and let it rot. If more people hate it then the ride will become a money sucking eyesore. It will drive people away. And then what? Maintain it for 20 years, long enough for people to forgot what used to be there? Seems to be their strategy.

I already rode it at Magic Kingdom, (when it was working). I never even got to ride the Splash Mountain they had. Now it's coming here to my home park of Disneyland. What a green eyesore. I'm just going to ride it to see what actual difference there is and then never ride it again. Just like The Pirates of the Caribbean and Roger Rabbit's Cartoon Spin. @@Mammothsaber-4457 Sorry, but this is a long one. Riding the same ride in different parks isn't dumb, converting Splash Mountain into a boring Tiana ride is dumb. And doing it twice expecting to get a better result, well that's just the definition of insanity right there. Splash Mountain is in critter country not in New Orleans Square. By retheming it to TBA is extends New Orleans Square and destroys critter country. Look, Tiana deserved a whole lot better than this. She could have gotten her own ride or better yet her own restaurant. They did make a small Tiana's Palace here in Disneyland, but they could've went further. They could've replace the entire French Market into Tiana's Palace complete with animatronic characters to entertain diners. The ghost of Dr. Facilier could appear making things move or sing friends from the other side. It would've been awesome and something special for Disneyland that compares to The Beauty & Beast dinning experience in Magic Kingdom. Tiana does come out to greet guests, which is nice. Although I missed her each time I went. I'm sorry, but they gave Tiana a bad ride. First they destroyed a ride everyone loved. Then they gave Tiana a dull ride. The animatronics was sparse. Mostly dark. The story made no sense. The laughing place was cringe with a giant Tiana head projection looking at me, bobbing up and down. The only thing I had to look forward to was the final drop which was not as fun as the fear build up ala Splash Mountain. This just became another dull happy ride like Frozen. Not to mention they didn't use music from the movie. The only thing I can think of they could do better in California is if they replaced the mechatronic animatronics with Pneumatic ones. They just use compressed air so they'll do better in wet, damp environments. Instead of shorting out like the ones on Magic Kingdom. I'm so sorry, this was long and if you read all the way this far well I appreciate it. I do tend to be long winded.
