  • I'm not the right person to ask about reloading, but here's my workflow with virgin brass.

NIce vid Thomas, 7x57 is a real fun cartridge. Flat and low recoil, especially with the 139 or 140. My daughters use 7x57 for hunting Antelope out on the Colorado plains. Although we have the rimless VZ/Mauser version. Looking forward to the range video.

I have purchased a Forster Co-Ax..it has Germanic engineering and ergonomics
7x57mm kills with the new solid expandable bullets kills like a 300 mag. Several years ago I killed a 42" Cape Buff at 142 paces dead in his tracks with the 160 gr Barnes X flat base bullet..total pass thru of the neck vertebrae at the shoulder. It is so pleasant to shoot there is no flinch and much less muzzle blast...36% less recoil than 7 Rem Mag and with a 200yard zero only 2.2" more drop at 400yards 21.7" vs 19.5"

Thanks for the response. I recently started loading Lapua brass for my 308 and I did notice that the brass didn't require much effort when sizing. I was inspired by that experience to ask you if you sized virgin brass. Thank you for the information. I won't be sizing in the future and any time saving tip is always nice to discover when reloading.

Hi Thomas, Might be a silly question here, but are you using a standard shell holder that came with the dies, or you need a special one to hold rimmed "R" cases?

Use the one for .303 British

TH if you will "swirl" your powder as you pour it into you funnel...kind of move it along the edge in either clockwise or counter-clockwise motion rather than just dumping it into the case, you will get better compaction in the case without having to shake or vibrate the case. High density loads will fall into place without having to compact them when seating your bullet on top of the powder column.

Another very informative video Thomas !
In addition to the obvious cost savings, handloads taliored to your rifle will shoot better than the factory stuff. However, it's definately not as easy as simply opening the box and shooting. The blasers seem to shoot the factory stuff pretty darn well most of the time. Bullet runout on the factory fodder can be downright atrocious, which is never a good thing for long range accuracy. I always look forward to your videos Thomas, keep up the good work !

This was a really old video! Thanksfully quality has improved since this. Project for 2021 is a 6,5x57R in same type of rifle (kipplauf), but a Blaser K95.

What a cool old cartridge, and great video I have a 303-25 No4 Enfield which I think I'll one day have rebarrel due to limited medium game hunting bullets choices because of its slow twist rate. I wanted to rebore and rechamber it 6.5x57R, but I'm not sure it would really be possible (reboring from .257 to .264).
This caliber may be just the answer (nothing wrong with original .303 Brit either)! Even with the conservative loads I'd have to use for the Enfield's action, it looks like (with AR2208/Varget or IMR4320 powder) it's just shy of modern 7-08 Rem factory loads for muzzle velocity!
That's pretty sweet if you ask me!

I'm not too familiar with the Enfield, but sounds like it would be more cost efficient to get another surplus rifle? THe 6,5x57R is a nice cartridge IF you can get your hands on brass. It was somewhat difficult at the time I bought the 7x57r

***** Oh yeah I hear you man, for the money I'd spend doing it, I could get some really nice old surplus sporter Mausers or Enfields, or indeed a new Howa 1500 (already have a heavy barreled .308 and I don't think any other modern rifle comes even close for value for money), but I guess it's just the sort of thing where I don't mind spending the extra money for something rather unique! hehe. And yeah, I've also found it easier finding 7x57R brass, not to mention reloading dies.

I know what you're saying. Have a watch I have spent silly money on purely for sentimental reasons.

Thomas, are you sizing this new Lapua brass? The operation wasn't shown... I know Lapua brass is very consistent from the factory but is that a step one can skip, or something you just didn't film?

I wish i had that much brass. Its slim pickens today. 😪

    • @THLR

Depends on the caliber, but we're swimming in brass here. 6,5x55 Norma and Lapua brass you can most likely have a bucketfull at the local range, but for my 6,5x57R RWS brass it was almost 6 months trying to find some...

I also have to run new brass through full or atleast neck sizing die. Then again I mostly load 308 & 300WM. Otherwise seating the bullet would damage the case. Especially necks of Lapua 308 brass seem to be bit tight. Have you ever come across a similar problem?

Great video. How do you like that Jaeger 9 single shot?
Do you do much shooting with semi auto rifles? I've watched quite a few of your blogs now and I don't think I've seen you with one.

Keep up the good work!

hello THLR.NO good work on the video's and shooting . may I offer a suggestion...try the Hornady bullet comparator to measure your over all length it pulls the measurement off the ojive not the meplat . a much more accurate method

+wind call I actually have a bullet comparator. You are of course right, I have just not bothered to use it. Will put it on my desk and try to implement it in my routines.
