    I served on a Leopard 2 as commander and squad leader from 1986 to 1988. In my first maneuver as commander ("Trutziger Sachse") I lost contact with my unit at the freeway junction Hannover: Above me Leo 2, behind me Leo 2, in front of me Leo 2 ... Over the radio I got the order to "Rothenburg ob der Wümme - Vorwärts Marsch-Marsch!!!" - that is: what the engine gives. We raced with almost 120 km/h over the highway, on the left lane - all trucks and cars have voluntarily made way ;-), my comrades behind me ... When I read 70 km/h for Leopard 2, I have an extra broad smile.

    I was on the Leopard 2 from '88 to '90 as a gunner and loader and it was great. The technology, precision, everything.
    Besides the actual purpose of this tank, it's a great toy for adults.
    After more than 30 years, I would really like to take it on another exercise and chase a load of KE Muniton into the Lüneburger Heide. The smell, the sounds. a lot of memories.

      i saw a jeep to drive along the line to find the breaking point ... what a fun way to play robber and gendarm with real live soldiers haha.
      I am sorry guys, that must have been pita - but we were boys, and we knew the woods better than the troops training there - you never saw us or caught us
      i also hope you found your train wagons from the loading ramp.. we kinda accidentially losened the break and it went rolling....
      Anyhow we appreciated a great show of allied tanks - we were boys with BMX bikes and we enjoyed the low bass vibrations very much.

    I served on A4, A5 and A6, on all places upt to platoon leader. People say the A4 is outdated in terms of armor, etc. Well, might be true; and I always appreciated the advanced equipment of A5 and higher (2nd thermal image, more storage place, some other features). Though, I absolutely loved the balanced mobility of the A4 which was beyond anything of later variants! And that folks, is often worth more than armor, because mobility triumphs over armor. Tanks have 2 weapons. The gun and the motor!

    It is quite unbelievable that human beings can build such things. Just think of all the parts that have to be designed, manufactured, and built..then assembled to all fit properly and function. All the engineering involved etc. If you really ponder over it while watching this video and seeing the inside of the vehicle as well as the outside it is damn amazing. And these vehicles are probably much less involved and complex as say a fighter aircraft, for example the F-22 Raptor. Human ingenuity has no bounds. If the money is there, the manpower and if the technology exists..(or has to be created)and man's desire, I believe man can build nearly anything he can imagine.

      Well, they are sufficient for what is required of them. Not to speak of the funds necessary to run them compared to getting whole new batch of tanks with assorted spare parts, munitions, crew training, etc. It is much more reasonable just to tweak T-72M4CZs to new modifications.

    • @Balnazzardi
      @Balnazzardi 5 лет назад +4

      Ye if you dont want to invest millions more in your defence budget, then modernizing your older tanks is the next best option....thats actually what Russia is still mostly doing because T-14 Armata is way too expensive to actually produce in big numbers, so they are instead mainly updating their older T72, T80 and T90 tanks.
      Also Leopard 2A4 (as seen here) wouldnt be that significant of upgrade because its also from 80s....if you want proper upgrade you would have to go for Leopard 2A6 or 2A7 models. While 2A4 is still decent tank and would be able to go against even updated T72s and T80s (as long as the Leo 2A4s have the proper upgrades as well), it might not have had so good chance against newest version of T90 or against Armata (assuming Russia is able to get them to perform the way they want), but either way 2A4 is quite aging tank model already.

    • @GroueTeam
      @GroueTeam 4 года назад +4

      Everyone shit's on T72s, but compared to their price, they are very good tanks. For a tank which was made in the 70s, the armament holds up to this very day, not even mentioining they can fire ATGMs from their main canon, to my knowledge no western MBT can do that. With an engine upgrade they can carry a lot more armor and optics etc. while still being a lot cheaper than western tanks. Obviliusly they cannot be used forever, but they still have potential, espeically for poorer countries.

      The Leopard 2a4 is around 30 years old,
      the newer generations are the a6, a7 and a7+, all of them highly modern and effective...
      You can't say for certain that any modern tank is better than another one, because numbers alone rarely paint a correct picture (see T34-36).
      Let's just agree that the "Leo", "Chally", Armata and leclerc are all very capable Tanks. The Abrams needs some updates though (which it will get).
