"I know- let's have a spelling contest!" One of the greatest lines ever, delivered by an actor who deserved an Oscar and was ROBBED because so many idiots were too frikkin' stupid to see what a spectacular job he did as Doc Holliday.
BlakeFerret the Oscars were in 1994 and Tombstone only awards it was nominated for were at MTV awards where Val Kilmer was nominated for Best Male Performance
Every time I see this movie or Val Kilmer in general I wonder the same fucking thing. His performance in this film is nothing short of fucking brilliant! I wish I could meet him if only to shake his hand and tell him I think he's a legend and deserves more recognition for this.
It is one of the greatest performances in the history of cinema. I thought he was a light-weight before seeing this movie. But not now, not even close.
Tony Conner Totally did nail it. His acting in this movie can be easily overlooked since he’s playing a dimwit outlaw. His acting of this character is outstanding.
I loved that Wyatt didn't feel the need to step in until Virgil got angry. He wasn't at all worried for Virgil's safety, Wyatt was worried that Virgil might kill ike
She just said he can go all day and night and then some that's why he gets to be her loving man don't keep a man who can't keep up with you so of course he's a winner.
The scene was further perfected with the fact he twirled the guns in each direction as well as continue holding his metal cup. It was something I never noticed in my viewings till somebody pointed it out
Taking nothing away from Kilmer’s performance as Holliday as he was simply brilliant, Lang’s masterful job with his role of Ike is simply the icing on the cake. His performance makes Kilmer’s that much better.
Tim Fowler I think you and I are the silent majority on that. I totally agree. Not that Val Kilmer didn't do a good job but I think Stephen Lang was better in his role.
Val's Doc is one of the greatest jobs in the history of American cinema. And this film is one of the greatest films ever made. The Wyatt Earp film that came out soon after was a joke.
He was amazing in the scenes he was in, it's true. I think you have to consider the relative amount of screen time as well, though; it's easy to look good for a few scenes, and Lang has three or four, but when you're in practically half the movie (as Val Kilmer was) it gets harder to be consistent.
"nonsense I have not yet begun to defile myself." Doc you've been drinking for two days straight and it helps with the coughing but come on drown yourself in Kate for a while
Ike is the most cowardly cowboy i have even seen. He is essentially spared four times by wyatt in the movie if you count the first time when he tries to free his buddy when he kills the sheriff.
The only bad part of the movie was when they let him go free. Why? He tried to shoot at Doc and Wyatt at the OK Corral when he fell into that building. And then he tried to assassinate Virgil.
Matt Smith because in real life, Ike never did that, he ran from the ok corral after running into Wyatt. He also escaped when Wyatt or doc killed frank Stilwell, that’s why they show him being spared in the movie, the events in real life were different
I like all these subtleties in the script. Doc humiliates a cowboy for being illiterate in here, later on confesses to hate another one for letting his education all hang out.
Thanks Vidspot this is exactly the scene I was looking for. My friends and I crack up on Ike every time. We actually coined a term amongst ourselves called getting "Iked". When you back down after someone raises up to you, a la 2:49.
". . .don't you ever put your hands on me, see? Don't you ever try to man-handle a cowboy, cause we'll cut your fu^#ing pimps heart out!" - LMAO everytime I see this part.
To be fair, he was totally wasted. Now I'm not sure if you've ever been wasted before (I haven't) but it's pretty easy to get knocked out, and it doesn't even take much force.
Yes, it was. I have a theory as to why they kept it - - the entire scene leading to that was lengthy and so well executed, they just kept it rather than taking a chance and re-shooting? My theory anyway.
+Jim Loftus Exactly. They always shoot scenes multiple times anyway. The director and editor mostly likely felt this was the strongest take and didn't want to sacrifice the whole performance for the sake of having a better pistol whip.
"Don't take no mouth from no bartenders neither....see what i'm sayin'...rap somebody on the beezer or get some respect around here.." The b*tch slap and that line had me ROLLING on the floor the 1st time I watched this movie...LoLL!
I think he's everybody's favorite. He's the most intelligent, witty, best gunfighter who's always drinking. Most badass character in the movie. What's not to like about him?
Notice how when Vigil bumps the table and the bottle falls and starts to roll. The other actor had presence of mind to grab the bottle before it fell on the floor. He probably saved the scene.
Galactic Beats cuz he had the rest of the Clanton & McLaury faction to back him up, was reported to actually be a nice guy & was good friends with Johnny Behan
Galactic Beats yep. also historically speaking half the town of Tombstone was divided in support of them or the Earps but almost everyone didn't like Doc which is a such an interesting guy but the constant drinking, picking fights & tuberculosis made it hard to see the respectable southern gentleman of a dentist underneath
@jsbeard18 I totally agree! Val Kilmer´s acting in this masterpiece stands firmly alongside (if not beyond) Heath Ledger´s interpretation of The Joker/any of Johnny Depps various characters through the last few years. 3 talented actors, alas 1 hasn´t been renowned for his profound qualities in my opinion. This seemingly sublime and astonishing exhumation. Love it. FUCKING LOVE IT!!!
Did you see "Public Enemies"? He's got only two real scenes in the whole movie, but he brings such a presence to them that they're a joy to watch. The guy is just great.
The movie doesn't only hints at the Earps' backstory, but Ike wasn't just calling them names. They actually were pimps. They'd operated many businesses over the years, including brothels.
A classic from beginning to end...and it’s for that reason that I wish the director has retaken the final moment of this scene cuz that pistol club was clearly a miss and yet Ike dropped like a rock like he’d been knocked out cold.
He may have been an entertaining character, but he was a worthless coward whose mouth always stirred up shit that he just couldn’t handle unless Curly Bill and Ringo were around lol
@@uome20bukz Of the Clantons and McLaurys, Ike was more deeply involved with the Cowboys, Billy I don't know much about, but I've gotten the sense that the McLaurys were not full-fledged outlaws but instead had a business relationship with the Cowboys as many of the small ranchers in the area did and even though they had previously clashed with the Earps, they were caught in the middle of the conflict between Ike Clanton, the Earps and Doc Holliday.
