This ad perfectly captures the essence of Maria Sharapova. She's not just the beauty - she has the brains and the brawn. She backed up the looks department with a stellar resume, including a career Grand Slam that only 10 people in the history of women's tennis has ever achieved.
Goodbye and happy retirement to the most popular sportswoman of the 21st century - Maria Sharapova. She has brought in a lot of fans to the sport, including me. Thank you for the inspiration you have brought on and off the court.
I really love this Nike commercial! It shows that the pretty girl can play. This was the year Sharapova won the tournament by defeating the number one and number two players in the world.
If Maria had not injured her shoulder in 2007 and had been able to continue performing at the level she displayed in 2006, then she could have challenged Serena at least as well as Azarenka has done (still a lopsided record, but with much more competitive matches). It was too bad that she gradually lost the attributes that enabled her to beat Serena twice in 2004 and nearly a third time in 2005 as she got older.
This was a fairy tale year and period of Maria's career. This ad was played during US Open of 2006 - which she won as her 2nd Slam and as a 19 year old teenager. And she did it in style, wearing the iconic Audrey Hepburn inspired little black dress and besting an equally revered champion in Justine Henin.
i dunno if you guys notived the same but when she's in the car it looks as she was going to smile, after the paparazzi, something was about to come... maybe she couldn't resist hearing everybody singin "i feel pretty" :P
THE MOVIE was released in 1961. AFTER the play. THE MOVIE was the one that changed it to "i feel pretty and witty and bright, and i pity any girl who isn't me today." which was the version quoted in Anger Management. It's not common for movie versions of musicals to change lyrics in order to fit the timeline of the movie. Look at Grease and Hairspray. West Side Story THE MOVIE takes place over a shorter time period than the play, thus, changing the lyrics makes the story flow better.
@Theocide84 The original lyric was "bright," actually. They changed it for the movie, because the "I Feel Pretty" scene was moved to daytime, rather than nighttime as in the original musical. So they needed a word that rhymed with "day."
"Bright" was used in the original Broadway production, and, is still used on stage. however, the movie changed it to "gay" so that it would rhyme with "today", since Tony visits her BEFORE the rumble (which was at night) in the movie.
This is a common misconception. The original lyric is bright, to rhyme with night. In the movie version, Maria sings this song in the day time, so they changed it to gay to rhyme with "day."
actually, they didn't change anything. the version in this commercial, is the original version of the song. in the original broadway production of West Side Story, the line was "i feel pretty, and witty, and bright, and i pity any girl who isn't me tonight." it was the movie that changed the lyrics to "i feel pretty, and witty, and gay, and i pity any girl who isn't me today."
this ad is pretty hahaha she is really pretty, and she plays amazing, all the girls from 00:32 to 00:40 look sooo jealous...and she is prettier and better player than Kournikova
No, in the movie, it's "gay" to rhyme with day. But the original broadway production states "I feel pretty and witty and bright. And I pity any girl who isn't me tonight." Since that scene really takes place in the evening, "bright" needs to rhyme with "tonight." In the movie, the scene takes place during the day, so the lyrics were changed ("gay" with "day"). So this is accurate.
Good sir, you have made an excellent point! Thus opening my, somehow, closed mind to view, what simply appears to be, a meaningless television advertisement for some doubtly philosophically concerned commercial products, as a beautiful & realistic interpretation of one's, &, also, most probably by the, I fear, majority of people, shallow view of high-profile individuals, based only by their, shall I say, "looks".
PEOPLE! THEY DID NOT CHANGE "GAY" TO "BRIGHT"!! THEY STAYED TRUE TO THE ORIGINAL WEST SIDE STORY. for those of you who know NOTHING about broadway or musicals, let me tell you. West Side Story was ORIGINALLY a broadway musical. NOT A MOVIE. The show opened in 1957. got that? 1957. The lyrics in the ORIGINAL show were "i feel pretty and witty and bright, and i pity and girl who isn't me tonight." just like the commercial.
They didn't censor the word gay. The original song from the broadway show doesn't say gay, it says bright. But for the movie version, they changed some words.
@SkylarPro yeah bowlover is right - the word substitution is basically relevant to the day/night context. The original, lesser known theatrical stage version actually used "bright" to begin with, it was changed to the presumably more suggestive "gay" in the movie for this reason .. Take the adam sandler/jack nicholson scene in 'anger management' for example, they used the "gay" version not only because was more humorous but also because its more relevant during the daytime.
@betumene They only changed it because of the controversy. "Gay" means "happy" in the context of the song, but SOOOO many people just think it means "Homosexual" and that can pretty much be either a good thing or bad thing to them, supporting it or being against it.
Yes...I'm German and we are actually taught in English classes that there are two meaning to that word. So it should be no problem with native speakers to let them sing "gay"... XD
Of courve, you've determined that, let me humbly paraphrase, beauty & character may find themselves united in one person. As pictured & examplified, here, by Ms. Sharapova. Let this comment be an epitome of my spiritual enlightenment & eternal appreciation to your great mind. Thank you.
@hogai95 Gay doesn't mean happy anymore. Gay means homosexual, so if you use it in it's original context, people will either be confused (those who are too young to know), or laugh at its archaic usage. Since Nike obviously paid to be able to alter it, they made it more "today". I don't have a problem with that...still gets the ad's point across.
Gosh, she rather looks discontent, like my Russian colleague. But Americans like that look to do commercial with because kindness is a weakness to them. In other countries being friendly is a sign of self-control, balance and discipline. But especially in Nike Spots you often see that doggedness which is not typical for real sportsmanship. You can’t even call this spot sarcasm.
If Sharapova herself were mouthing the words, or even just smiling, this commercial could be a lot of fun. As it is, it's just weird. Were they afraid she wouldn't seem empowered enough?
Flobbyoiboyz nah its cause everyone was mesmerized by her because they thought she was just some hot blonde, and no one would take her seriously. so that's why she has a serious face because she's annoyed of how people just found her "pretty" and didnt pay attention to her actual skill on the court
This ad perfectly captures the essence of Maria Sharapova. She's not just the beauty - she has the brains and the brawn. She backed up the looks department with a stellar resume, including a career Grand Slam that only 10 people in the history of women's tennis has ever achieved.

one word, doping
FuckTheWhat _ say that again without crying
@@GPMxKeko she hadn’t even started taking meldonium at this point you idiotic twat
Don't even like Serena but she beat maria 20 TIMES. Those Russian Roids will only get you far.

"Such a pretty smile"
Sharapova: >:(
Not a big Sharapova fan but this commercial is a work of art. Love it.
Best Nike ad ever.

My favourite part was the signature savage backhand return.
Me too
Yes, she was both: Gorgeous & Beast ❤
Mr. T should’ve been in that commercial sitting courtside saying “AND I PITY!!!” Lol
I love that "Let's Go" look on her face at the end.
The very determined, talented, and focused Ms. Sharapova is not just another pretty-face!!
she is far beyond pretty
Отличная реклама Nike, Мария, спасибо большое за все годы тебя в теннесе и эмоции от твоей игры!
Awesome ad. Not only is Maria hot, but she is a kickass tennis player with the championships to prove it.
The thought of John McEnroe feeling pretty is going to keep me up nights.
I find the creator of this ad is a genius
Love that angry face
If this was Serena you'd be calling her a mad black woman for making an angry face.
@@FlowerTower lol don't tell me you compare maria to serena appearance wise. no contest

Maria was definitely not the next Kournikova. She was the first Sharapova.
I remember this commercial, but don't remember it being this funny 🤭😂. 👍

I feel pretty, witty, and bright! This so funny, and something, something, and so very funny it makes me laugh!
This is great
The hotel they used was the Waldorf=Astoria, which is so beautiful!
if i was less than ten feet away from her i would start singing too shes gorgeous!
well yes, the whole point is it starts out in front of the mirror and the song makes us expect a girlie girl, but she is a warrior.
I love her
nike has the best commercials
Love her

Lol the spot even has McEnroe!
* McEnroes
And truly so pretty
@vyvyanos yes, the original version says bright-tonight. It's the movie motion when is said gay-today
love the paparazzi part loool

Emma White Oh my god I always thought it was the other way around..
AWESOME!
ok, image-audio relation is perfect for video theme and his "top guest"
I've just saw the movie West Side History(2021), I didn't know that the music is from this commercial is from this musical, yes I'm a musical ignorant

У Марии такой взгляд, как будто в ее голове в этот момент играет Rammstein. :)
The word was changed to "gay" only in the movie of West Side Story. In the stage version, the lyrics are the same as the ones used here.
i love maria :D
oh okay, thanks for clearing that up :)

Loads of female players are LGBT so best to change lyrics!
I feel pretty, oh so pretty~~
i need to make a correcton.
the movie changed the lyrics to
"i feel pretty and witty and gay, and i pity any girl who isn't me today."
i love you
OMG SHE IS "PRETTY" BEAUTIFUL
I don't think they should have changed the 'gay' part, It means to be carefree in the song. I do like the ending though XD

They borrowed the song from West Side Story, and changed the word "gay" to "bright". Btw, I think Natalie Wood from the movie was Russian.
try watching "West Side Story", dude, it says "gay", and thats the actual song
its sonds like shee is jelouuuss
John McEnroe is also in Anger Management, which features a cover of this song too. Now there's some useless information for you!
Damn she's so pretty :"> and hot though lol :)))
Not really sure how this makes me want to buy anything made by Nike
