You can also adjust your distribution tool by un-threading the halves, and spinning the polished tip outward a bit and re-tightening. That will set your distribution depth a bit deeper and you shouldn't need the scraper card tool anymore, since your level will be set by the distribution tool. Worked well for me. Love your channel!

@@kociarz46 I think it is 10 seconds all together but you have to factor in the time it takes for the vibration pump to ramp up to full pressure. If you hold the button down you can extend this pre-infusuon time which could be good for lighter or fresher roasts. I would also measure yield in grams not ounces, grams in, grams out, as I am sure you have come across in most other videos on RUclips. A smaller ratio for dark roasts, and larger ratio for lighter roasts.
It's interesting that in both your experiments, factory versus your custom program, it was 28 versus 29 seconds. However the weight of coffee was 42 versus 56 g, respectively. That is 3% more time resulting in a 33% increasing yield weight. Hmm. 🤔. Thanks for the instructional video it's very informative :)
It wasn't the same shot, if we look at the pressure gauge it was lower on the second shot, that means more water went through the coffee as it didn't put the same resistance.
I’ve found that depending on roast type how dark the bean is will effect timing, grind ratio darker roast at 18g is heavier and fills the Portafiller more to a light roast. Also the pressure on the Breville for a dark roast never gets as high as what you and others get on your bean.
Love your videos :) but shouldn’t the shot be 2ounces of liquid, not weight? i.e. 2 fluorescent oz, which is about 60ml. Weight wise, it should be measured in grams to compare it to the bean weight.
the 2oz of liquid is the benchmark for espresso but it is all depends on your tasty. So it could be 2 or 1.5 oz. Lately I'm liking it 1:2 ratio myself.
Just do you know, water is 1:1 volume:weight. So 1mL = 1g, and 1fl.oz = 1oz. Only for water though. Presumably coffee has roughly the same density as water.
Long pressing the programme button also resets the temp settings. I like having my temp set lower for the dark roasts im using. I'm still figuring out what water amount is best for me

Double shot: Does 18 grams of ground coffee with a ratio of 1/2. = 36-gram shot of coffee or = 2 oz shot = 56 grams or, =2 ounces by volume; not weight which would include crema? I'm a newbie and very confused. If it's a science, I need to get a handle on which is optimum!!! I've been doing an 18/36 gram ratio. My results are all over the place. Mostly terrible unless I add milk, which is delicious. Do some people only like milk drinks? Thanks!
I have the same experience, 18-19g coffee for a double, and get 60g liquid out, I think it is too much since I see everywhere 1:2 ratio like you said. At this point I have tried 3 different kind of coffee, even adjusting inside burr. My results are all over the place and sometime no pressure at all.
This is a great video! I have a few questions: This example was done with a double shot. Do I have to dial in again using the single shot, or will the Breville remember my programming for the double shot and divide that by 2 for the single shot? Or do I need to program it again? Am I still going for 20-30 seconds on a single shot? Or should that number be different?
Hi Hoon. I love all your videos about breville brista, thank you so much for making them. I have one issue though, I follow all your steps (before programming the machine) and I get for 18grs of coffee beans, 100ml of espresso. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. The pressure looks similar to yours as well. Do you have any advice please? I've been trying to fix this for months to no avail.

Hi Hoon. I'm in the process of dialing my machine. I want to try dialing in using program mode but Im kind of confused in the time part. I see some videos that starts the timer once the coffee strarts dripping and not once you press the button. I believe your method yields about 56grams or 2 ounces right?
Hi just watched your video. Quick question. What cup/puck do you use? The one with lots of holes or the one with 1 while in the middle? (lol as bad as it sounds, pardon my ignorance)
Just a heads up.........Volume vs weight is not the same thing. Program mode focuses on the volume. It's possible they may match but that's pure coincidence. You needed a measuring cup, not a scale.
While what you say is fare , this filtrate is 99% water so it's very close to the same. But filtration time varies hugely with any system so the timer programing thing is a bit silly. Also, how anyone can have taste buds drinking concentrated double shot, is beyond me.
Would anyone know why my double shot program doesnt automatically stop? It keeps going unless I manually stop the extraction. Does this mean i have a faulty machine? Thanks
That's the point of the program mode, it's essentially manual i.e. won't stop until you tell it to which then sets the timing when you go back to the automatic double shot. Nothing wrong with the machine.
So what EXACTLY does the programming do: does it standardize the amount of water that gets pushed through the puck or the amount of time? Or something in between?
hoon, i've been playing around with program as well. but the actual shot time is whatever it is minus the 10 sec preinfusion time. in your other vid, i saw you have the niche zero grinder, did that help make the grind even finer for a better dial in? cuz i've noticed that even when i program it, shot to shot it will not be consistent even when i measure exact. so i think the issue is due to the grinder itself. thoughts?
I stop using program mode because I never get a consistent shots. Having a separate grinder helps you get more consistent grinds. By the way how long did you warm up the machine?
@@HoonsCoffee I leave my machine on warm for at least 20 mins with PF on. then before pulling my shot, i would pre-flush the grouphead as many single boiler systems tends to over heat the block. so even though breville says it's at 200F, chances are, it's probably hotter than that. so i even purposely reduce the temp down (pressing the filter size in program mode).
Hey Hoon! Awesome videos. I got a question. I put in 18g of coffee The pressure goes 12-1o clock It extracts for 21 seconds I only get 54g Shouldn’t it be 60g for a double shot?

Hoon, are you saying that the grind setting will impact the ounces extracted? I did this, setting my double shot to 2 oz, but getting 2 oz (or close) rarely happens. Do the type of beans have an impact?
The grind setting does impact the amount extracted. More coarse means less time on the throughput as well as less water "staying" in the coffee powder. Also different beans means different times/weights and so on..!
Hey hoon! great work man. If you don't mind me asking what your grind setting on this where you on 8? 7? I know every beans will have different grind set, but I just want to get a ballpark figure. Thanks!

So is 1:2 ratio better? Or the 2 oz? Also, given 1:2 ratio is a much smaller cup, to hit the 25 - 30s, does that mean we should grind it much finer? I'm really new to this espresso making, so really appreciate any help I can get! Thanks in advance!
it depends on your coffee beans, old cheap dry beans vs fresh oily beans are 2 worlds apart therefore grind set and amount will differ big time. Check his video on ''Dialing in'' and ''grinder adjustment'', i think this will pretty much answer all your questions.

Thanks man i have the same machine just today I realize a have a program mode lol
Hi. What is your grind setting on the Lavazza Crema e Aroma? Thanks for your videos😊👏🏻👏🏻🙏🏼
I know it is not the same as yours but try 6 or 7.
So is 1:2 ratio better? Or the 2 oz? Also, given 1:2 ratio is a much smaller cup, to hit the 25 - 30s, does that mean we should grind it much finer? I'm really new to this espresso making, so really appreciate any help I can get! Thanks in advance!
Make sure you have to go by your taste. Make sure there is no sour or bitter taste in espresso
Hi
I have the same machine and the same coffee. What's your grind set on and also what is your grind amount set too. Thanks.
it depends on your coffee beans, old cheap dry beans vs fresh oily beans are 2 worlds apart therefore grind set and amount will differ big time. Check his video on ''Dialing in'' and ''grinder adjustment'', i think this will pretty much answer all your questions.
and the grinder is not precise and will vary depending on your beans, he suggests to weight your beans instead of grind time witch can be arbitrary
what’s grind size??
Can you tell me the grind settings for the grand amount and the grand size?
I just got this machine, im playing with settings, strugglinga little, coming from gaggia brera that did everythingfor me. What is your grind size setting and ground amount settings ? Great videos im watching them all!
If I were you start with middle "8" grinder setting.
Thank you great help ☕️cheers!
Shouldn't you time from when the coffee starts extracting?
I'm still confused myself as well. If based on extracting time, my shot only takes about 15 to 18 seconds.
@@HoonsCoffee I'm pretty sure the rule of thumb is to start timing from the first drip of coffee and discount the pre-infusion time. Also how much dose are you using? Ive been using 18g but I think this is too much. Going to experiment with 16g and 17g. Plus I always flush group head first to get some temp into it. I'm sure lower temp shots are sour
@@beer_goggler Sounds like you got it down! What is your favorite coffee bean?
@@HoonsCoffee I've been buying small measures of beans from a local independent coffee shop. Not sure of the exact blend but def a mixture of different beans as they are slightly different sizes
Hi Hoon! Where can I get that same digital scale, please and thank you??
Here is the link amzn.to/37ZfnBD
Hoon's Coffee Thank you very much!! Love your videos. You’re so thorough and informative. Learned so much from you. Keep it up!
Hoon's Coffee By the way, do you have the Amazon link to your same scale??
What espresso cups do you use?
Just double wall glass from Amazon,
What grind size are u using in this video?
Hello,
I changed the setting from inside and out for me to get high pressure now it’s over pouring any advice?
How do I program the Barista Pro? Cant find a link for it!
Curious how that works, this portafilter really can only actually hold 18-19G, so it would seem impossible to get a 1:2 ratio on this machine drawing 60G of water.
Christopher Schulte yeah he should be shooting for 40 grams or so instead of 56.
BrianVarick Yeah, if he has 18g of coffee in the portafilter then it should be about 36g of coffee liquid.
@@mariachiaztec5557 is that 18g of ground coiffee or beans? Im weighing 18g beans and getting 60g extracted coffee which makes my flat white too strong/bitter?? Ive had the machine since christmas and im really struggling with the taste
@@markwinterelectrical3839Yes, weigh 18g of beans and then stop your shot when you get to 36g of espresso. If it takes between 25-30s then it should be good. If it’s too quick, then grind finer. If it’s too long, grind coarser. Obviously it’s to your taste, but hope this helps
Why do yo choose to go with weight instead of ratio for your desired output?
what grind setting did you use for that bean?
I think 7 or 8
