    - EPISODE NOTES
This episode answers a question from one of our Patreons about what we know about Yip Man's (Ip Man's) real fights. I take a critical dive by reading a few commonly told tales about Yip Man's fights and discuss what we can know.

Wong Fei Hung was the son of a Pharmacist named Wong Key Ying number 4 of the Ten Tigers of Canton. He was number 7 on the list. Started learning Hung Gar from Tit Kiu Sam in 1858 at age 11. Lived in Guangzhou from 1875 to 1925. Passed on the style to Lam Tsai Wing from 1895 I think till 1925. Passed away penniless in 1925 at the age of 78 years old after the burning of his acupuncture clinic Po Chi Lam and buried on Yellow Mountain in Foshan. His body was dug up in 2014 and tossed aside to make room for an over pass. His body was recovered by his descendents.

@30:08 Haha I love how you bring up the dismantling the gun thing. When I read that in Leung Tings book there I figured “ok this is the real version the movie changed it but cool” but then I read Yip Chuns book and he talked about the same thing happening only it was different he said his father was being harassed by a cop in particular (his sisters or no other relatives are involved) and the cop put a gun in his face then he dismantled it. Now for the longest time i accepted that account as correct over Leung Tings since this was his sons account so growing up with his father surely this is the real version but then I read Ip Chings biography on his father and he gave a new account that his father as a detective was chasing after a criminal he caught(once again no relatives) then the criminal turned and pulled a gun on him and Yip Man then dismantles it so thats 3 different accounts 2 of which are from his own sons so that has since made me skeptical of course who knows maybe all 3 happened at different times😂

Interesting you talk about the real combat record of Yip Man. Makikoh Ito, posted on Facebook about the swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. She discusses the actual record of Miyamoto Musashi. I guess not much is really known.
Here is a copy and paste what she wrote:
Today I will talk a bit about perhaps the most renowned bushi and swordsman of them all, Miyamoto Musashi (or Musashi Miyamoto in first name - family name order). He is known for his book of military strategy and philosophy, The Book of Five Rings (Gorinsho 五輪書), which has been translated into multiple languages. He never served a master directly for an extended period of time. He is regarded as a kensei, a sword saint or the ultimate master of the sword.
But why is Musashi so famous? What battles did he fight in? The answer the the second question is, not that many, and he didn't distinguish himself particularly in them.
Miyamoto Musashi was probably born in 1584, as Miyamoto Bennosuke. The Battle of Sekigahara, the biggest battle during his lifetime, happened in 1600 when he was just 15 ot 16 years old, so although it is thought he did participate (on the losing Western army side) his prowess there was not that notable. Later on it is thought that he participated in both the Winter and Summer Campaigns of the Seige of Osaka (1614-1615), again on the losing side. Again he did not stand out in either battle. He and his adopted son Iori participated in the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637; Iori later received a promotion to minister in Lord Ogasawara Tadazane's household.
But what Musashi is known for in terms of fights are the ones he had as an individual against various skilled fighters - those who fought with spears as well as katana. The most famous match he had was against one Sasaki Kojirō of Ganryū (the Gan school of martial arts), better known as the duel on Ganyū Island. However, all of his matches have been written about and made into such legends that one is not sure what exactly is true and what isn't. The first mention of the match against Sasaki Kojirō is in a document that was written 120 years after Musashi's death, and recent scholarship has cast doubts on the veracity of the details of that duel as well as many others that Musashi allegedly participated in.
What does remain from Musashi's lifetime that is concrete are his writings, as well as his paintings. As I mentioned before he never served a lord directly, but was the guest of various lords throughout his lifetime, especially of Hosokawa Tadatoshi in Kumamoto. It was because of the patronage of lords like Hosokawa, who were impressed by the way he talked about swordsmanship and military strategy, that he was able to settle down comfortably enough to work on The Book of Five Rings and other writings.
So essentially, Miyamoto Musashi is renowned as a fearsome fighter with his "ni-tō-ryū" - two handed sword fighting and so on. But what really makes him famous are his writings. Many people apply his philosophies to life in general, not just military strategy.
As it happens, I recently translated a manga version of The Book of Five Rings, which describes how he got to write The Book of Five Rings as well as other works such 30 Instructions on Strategy and, to me his most interesting work, Dokkōdō (21 Articles), which could be called his last will and testament. The manga is an easy way to get into the subject and perhaps whet your appetite for more information about this swordsman and philosopher. Here's an Amazon link:

From “Fighters” (UK Martial Arts Magazine) - July 1993.
    An interview with Ip Ching.
Guy Bloom: And the story of Ip Man bending the barrel of a gun with his fingers?
Ip Ching: No, my father actually grabbed the gun and took out the tumbler that holds the bullets.
The previous question in the article..
Guy Bloom: I heard a story that Ip Man had said “If any of my students who know first and second form are ever beaten in a fight, then I shall jump off my roof”.
Ip Ching (laughing) That would be ridiculous.

the story of ym poking out the cylinder of a poorly made chinese copy of a revolver happened in ym's youth, 1920's at the latest, in fatshan. he entered the police force after the war, mid to late 1940's, in canton. so both the time and place are conflated in your narrative.

The bookstore owner you mantioned fleed to Taiwan and continued with his book store thinking the the Taiwan government would support him but unfortunately they just used him for Choy Ying Man's presidentcy campian bad mouthing Hong Kong. He lost everything in Taiwan and went back to Hong Kong. Yes as you said he was selling a lot of misinformed books published in Taiwan smearing the Mailand so these books were considered illegal in Hong Kong. FYI This guys is not a good person anyways, I used to live near his book store and there was always some illegal activities happening there.

Your personal assessment of the bookstore owner notwithstanding, no one deserves to be kidnapped for freedom of speech. This freedom shouldn’t exist only for the things you agree with or only for people you deem “good”. Big boy governments like the CCP should handle ridicule like an adult, right?

@@TheKungFuGenius Sir, you have to first know this bookstore, during 2019 HK Riots, this bookstore was supplying gear to the rioters, gasmasks, helmets, clubs and firebombs ect. This is not just a bookstore in Mongkok.

    • @TheKungFuGenius

Then that person should have been handled by HK authorities, not secretly kidnapped and sent away to have their brain scrambled. Also I'm talking about the bookstore in CWB, not one in Mongkok. I don't care how you feel about mother China and protecting the CCP's ability to do whatever they want to whomever, but people should have a reasonable expectation of safety and fair treatment under the law... @denisjdelgado9657 I read several different news sources and don't consider my political opinion fact as you clearly do. Enjoy living in a world where the CCP can do what they want to you if they don't like what you say. Although I have the feeling you'll never say anything bad about the good old CCP. But for the rest of us, we prefer to live in a world where we can voice our opinions without fear of a childish government needing to reprogram us. Also you got the facts wrong on what I was talking about.

Didn’t many KMT soldiers switch sides and join the Communists? Why didn’t Yip Man join the Communists? Of course switching sides did not guarantee a good outcome. I think, I read that many Chinese soldiers sent to fight in the Korean War were former KMT soldiers, who were used as cannon fodder.

Yip man was reportedly between 5′ an 5′4″ tall and weighed about 120 lbs. He probably didn't 'fight' anyone, though there were stories of a one punch KO. He may have learned and taught a martial art. Very small people find other ways to resolve issues. Maybe he had a 'champion' who served this function.
