Still one of the craziest moments in any country's TV history - a whole show getting cancelled because it wasn't screened for the network head beforehand and he had to shut it down himself while watching its premiere!
Too bad the Melbourne feed didn't include this announcement: "We apologize for this interruption, but unfortunately a technical problem prevents us from continuing our scheduled program for this evening. In the meantime, we bring you a brief alternative program."
The repackaged version incorrectly used the narrator after Doug Mulray said “Funbags.” In Sydney, it was cancelled before it returned from commercial with the word above. This was as it was interrupted in Melbourne; it was cancelled with just ten minutes remaining for the special.
My dissapointment was immesureable when I came to the realisation that the melbourne broadcast of the show didn't have the iconic: "we apologise for this interruption but unfortunately a technical problem prevents us from continuing our scheduled program for this evening, in the meantime, we bring you a brief alternative program" it just merely goes to the regular ident. It is funny to see the "newsbreak" sponsor bumper followed by no newsbreak. I guess the news that day was happening right then and there on tv. I mean, at least the lucky melbourne viewers got to see more of the show than any other state. They got nearly the full broadcast because it took another 15 minutes to get the message across to them that it needs to be pulled despite there being no timezone difference/nor did NHV start before it did in sydney. Lol. I'd still love to find: the full interrupted sydney broadcast of ANHV (because it actually features the technical problems voice over unlike the melbourne one) and also any news reports that came out the day after speaking about the incident.
i think the newsbreak coming up was just an incorrect pull of a switch as they went to the "alternative program" and accidentally went to air as a result of the quick switch over

Kerry Packer: GET THAT SHIT OFF THE AIR!!!
Mr Packer, you’re a legend!
Oh wow, I knew that the rest of the episode spent years as lost media but I never really thought of looking for the original broadcast. Very cool!
