Thanks Peter, you covered a lot of ground here, covering all the variations of focus settings. I’ve been shooting for a long time but often pick up new tips and information from your videos that I didn’t know. It’s so good of you to spend the time and effort to make these. Much appreciated. Take care.

Your tip about manual focus peaking turning off when the shutter button is pressed half way explains a lot of my frustration when using it.

Thanks for your tips....never used any other mode other than SAF! Given JIP is taking over I'm thinking of going retro by looking at the classics OM1-OM4 cameras...Have you done any reviews of these? I do apologize if you already have.

I have not made videos about those cameras. That could be a very good idea to test those legendary cameras.

Dear Peter, I am watching your Tutorials since a couple of weeks. And I would like to say THANK YOU for your helpful advices, Tipps and extensive informations about Olympus Cameras. There is always so much to learn from your experience. By the way I have seen that your personal setting for picture mode is Muted with -2 in saturation and contrast. Perhaps you can occasionally give me a short Answer what the reason is. Is it better for post processing or is it a "hidden secret" :-). Take care! Best wishes from Germany, Gustav.

Great to hear. I do have those settings so that the EVF/LCD gives me the possible reference image for my exposure.

Good tips, Peter. But to get the camera to expose for the face on face AF, do you need to set something else or is it automatic? I know that to link exposure to a single focus point, there's an additional setting. (BTW: Robin Wong says he avoids face detection, because it's not always accurate. Now I'm confused.)

You just watch your histogram/flag colors and make compensation to the exposure if needed. For me face detection has work fine.

Having set peaking to red dot fn button and having MF magnify assist active it seems I now have a choice of either at the touch of the button. One press to activate peaking and second press to return to magnify focus area. (EM5iii) Thanks.

Dave Ryder Can you elaborate on your setting for this? It sounds very useful.

Pre-mf would be useful for milky-way? Like set it up on a bright star and then it's set to perfect infinity?

High Peter, do you know what's the best focal length in a lens for handheld high resolution mode ?? I'm having trouble getting sharp images with handheld high resolution shot in my em1.3 and mZuiko 7-14 pro at 7mm. Thanks

It is more about the shutter speed than just focal length. What shutter speeds you are using?

C-AF and Aperture Prioty is useless in the E-M10 Mark III in anything other than blazingly bright light so to get sharp images I am reliant on shutter priority in good light or manual controls. In fact, C-AF is basically a broken "feature" (that has lacked firmware improvements) and Aperture Priority is so bad because it always dips to insanely low shutter speeds with absolutely zero way of remedying it. Any M43 camera that relies on more light compared to other sensor sizes desperately needs a minimum shutter setting - it should not be reserved for more expensive models as it simply cripples mode operation. The E-M10 is the first camera I have ever had where I cannot routinely use Aperture Priority mode. Olympus doesn't seem to want to give a firmware update to patch in improvements, instead selling a new model of the E-M10 Mark III with those in. Why can't we set a minimum shutter speed in Aperture Priority? Answer: it was plucked out and sold in more expensive cameras. It's completely inexcusable. Can't they release a firmware update to solve that issue and also add quick access to silent shutter mode in PASM? It's not much to ask. There's a ton of empty space in the SCP for quick toggle settings.
My option to downgrade from the Nikon D7200 to the E-M10 Mark III was terribly timed and now my camera sits behind the Mark IV with its updated AF system (and usable C-AF), increased MP count and improved stability, and ahead of the less crippled but better ageing Mark II. Olympus' lack of firmware updates for the Mark III is a total disappointment.
