I always thought Elijah's character was so serious because he was traumatized by his Mom dying and his Dad leaving him on a business trip...
I was going to say the same thing because when my cousins dad died in a car accident they were so serious for a year and a half.
As someone who lost a parent at a young age I have to agree. I just wasn't the same person, you weren't going to see the same ten year old doing what all the other kids did
I was just saying the same thing before I saw your own comment. My dad died when I was 13, and my older brother died when I was 16, and both times I was practically a zombie for a while instead of the class clown I normally was as a kid!
I was gonna say the same thing. I've known a few kids who changed for a while when their parents died. They got serious, deep, philosophical, really into their own minds and trying to figure things out. A lot like Mark
13:43 I wonder if someone saw this poster thought it was a family film but then saw the R rating at the bottom side of the poster and was like wait what
Very good movie. Macauley Culkin was brilliant in that role.
lol his acting is rough in the movie-lets;s be real.
He was brilliant, as was Elijah.
I remember watching this as a young kid and being like somewhat terrified of Macaulay Culkin, and also confused as to what was wrong with him. I was probably far to young to understand what was going on. Nonetheless he definitely disturbed my 5 year old mind.
@@dannymiller7187 Why is a 5 year old watching an R-rated movie?
@ Well then you probably would have not liked my father because I was four and five watching R-rated movies courtesy of him. I'm like a movie expert because of that. Predator, Terminator, and Terminator 2 Judgment Day are three of my favorite movies.
This was some amazing acting from both kids in this movie. I honestly feel like Elijah Wood doesn't get enough credit for his acting range.
yes and he deserves a lot
At least you didn't call him "underrated." I'm so tired of people calling every goddamned thing underrated
So this movies basically follo versus Kevin McCallister and that’s just great
If only Macauley Culkin had been able to make more films like the Good Son as he grew up. Not necessarily evil characters, but more serious types of films.
Party monster is good, based off totally real events. The killer is now free from jail a few years ago
Frodo was a pretty serious role.
@@tylersmith9868 and some psycho fan of his let her around her kid who she trying to pass off as a drag kid. 0_0;
@@aarongreenfield9038 Elijah Wood was Frodo or did someone bring up Elijah Wood’s career?
@@Michl-v7s Somebody commented that Elijah woods didn't have any serious roles, but their comment has since been deleted.
I sort of agree about Elija's character acting like an older person, but let's look at the fact he lost his mother that he loved. It's the type of thing that would change the behavior of a child. I'm using that as a reason he doesn't act like the child that he is.
I agree. Elijah’s character was a little more hardened by sadness and bitterness by his mother’s death. That’s a lot for a kid to deal with at that age. ❤️
That's exactly what I was thinking when he brought up Elijah's character acting older. Like the kid lost his mom and is grieving, do you expect him to still act like some happy, carefree child? lol
Hey if it works for Bruce Wayne no reason it doesn't work for another child right?
My mother died when I was 12 in a traumatic fashion that I witnessed firsthand. I can assure you Elijah Wood's acting and mannerisms are spot on. You're forced to grow up literally overnight. Notice how during the scenes of the funeral it's Elijah basically by himself surrounded by adults who all of course care for him, but aren't really all that concerned about him. That's 100% what my experience was. Similar to the movie, my father had to leave town right after my mother died but he took me with him. Mark (Elijah) is simply going through the motions of life and hasn't had a chance to grieve because not only has his life changed forever but now he's dealing with a psychotic cousin. Oh to be the therapist that has to work with Mark after this gauntlet of catastrophic events haha. Sorry for the long reply, but you're all correct in your thoughts on why his character was acting older. I saw this movie about 3 years before my mom died and have always identified with Mark in how he dealt or rather didn't deal with grief after such a horrible life event of losing his mother.
Absolutely. A real life example: When Princess Alix of Hesse was six years old, in 1878, her mother and younger sister died of diphtheria within less than a month of each other. The trauma completely changed her personality, she became introverted, melancholy and serious, and even though those traits were idealised in the Victorian era, hers were seen as excessive. She would only ever go back to being extroverted, chatty and smiling when around her closest family and friends.
Culkin was GENIUS casting. This is supposed to be a psychopath who charms everyone around him by playing the "good son," despite being rotten on the inside--so what better actor to use than a beloved child star? Especially one who had gotten us to root for him in a comedy where he burns and stabs people? Mac's fame for being the adorable little scamp makes it believable that only Elijah Wood knows the real "him" behind the blonde boyish facade. The movie doesn't need to spend time making us believe that Culkin's character can get away with murder, and can then focus more time on how creepy Culkin can be when no one is watching. Oooh, sinister!
I agree
Spot on. Great acting role choice for Macaulay
Culkin was ahead of his time
Respect’s to Mr. Culkin for seeing this as a choice for Mac

I remember seeing this as a kid cause of Macaulay Culkin. Boy was I in for a surprise. It was a good movie overall though.
I’ll never forget seeing the previews for this when I was 6 years old. I’m not sure but I’m pretty sure I cried after the commercial when it was over. I just couldn’t comprehend a child killing his family and it deeply disturbed me. Now it’s just another movie. Boy, I miss that innocence..
It was rated R. I'm baffled how anyone could have been surprised it wasn't a Home Alone spinoff of something.
@@amymalski butinHome alone he isa Hereo
The movie feels similar to _The Bad Seed_ back in the mid 50's. It's about a mother trying to find out if her own daughter is capable of murder, after an incident with a fellow student. It's incredibly underrated, and worth checking out.
Love that movie!
I was gonna say that .... ... . Should it be number 1 or 11 ?
Yes i made a comment about it to the good son is just a remake but a good one Mintyshould of talked about it but he may not know hes just a kid after all
Supposedly the movie is partly inspired by The Bad Seed
In my humble opinion the original The Bad Seed was better. But that's just me.
This was one of those VHS movies for me that my mom randomly brought home from the convenience store. We were't allowed to watch rated R moves so she obviousy just saw Mac and thought it was a kid's movie. I thought it was brilliant acting as a child when I first saw it and this is still a "go to" favourite for myself and my husband. I screamed when I saw you did this Minty!!! SO GREAT! Also the first time I heard the F word in a film. Such memories!
Evelyn Dillon i remember the F word seen Henery says coldly ''Mard do not Fuck with me '' Henrey was beng Forbidding wich means cold and creepy
Totally disagree about the Mark character. He was supposed to be overly serious & mature. That gave Henry the leverage to try and blame everything on Mark. Henry was just a “normal kid” being naughty while Mark was a little adult. Also, I’m a teacher and I assure you...there are LOTS of kids who act like 40 year olds. Idk why adults think all kids are fun loving and inarticulate. That’s a myth.
Not to mention his mother had just passed away.
Youth worker I get what you mean plenty of 12-year olds having an existential crisis I guess people have preconceived notions of kids intelligence.
Sorry but I disagree with myth part. .🤔😑.
@Europa: The Last Battle on Bitchute dot com I hope you aren't brainwashing children in public with your racist comments.
@Europa: The Last Battle on Bitchute dot com Every time I see you make ONE comment on RUclips, I'm going to tell TWO white children about how "White culture" is really just black culture with the serial numbers rubbed off. E.g. today I told my neighbor's daughter that Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" is really just a Bo Diddley song with lamer lyrics and less guitar.
Packaging looks pristine at that.. seems you have a mint minty. Cheers
@goodfella21f I don't think you understand
@@tylersmith9868 ohhhhhhh he *understands*

Badumm tishh!
This is the type of role that keeps a kid from being type cast. Both young men are very believable in their roles. This is why they'll be remembered, at least by those who can appreciate their craft - acting. Would love to see Macauley in more movies. I hope he's doing well. Elijah continues to shine. ❤❤
Macaulay is too good as a psycho in this movie!
Hey, Mark.. don't fuqq wit me....
😐
@@blazeswithwolvez7221 😂😂 I loved that line
Minty, the difference between Kevin and Henry is that Kevin is just misunderstood whereas Henry on the other hand is just plain evil from start to finish. SIMPLE AS THAT.
I'm glad you are reviewing this movie. I always thought that The Good Son was an Underrated Psychological Thriller.
I remember going to see this movie with a friend the weekend it came out. We knew it was going to be a bit disturbing but we didn't know how much it would hit home. We went to school with a kid who was just like McCauley's character who displayed these same sociopathic tendencies. While watching the "Highway Henry" scene we both looked at each other because the kid we knew had talked about wanting to do that. As the film went on and on the similarities where astonishing. A few weeks later we got word the kid had been sent to a group home for displaying all this same behavior from The Good Son. If you have kids, be very in tune with their mental well being. Last we heard the guy is 45 years old now and his been incarcerated for 20 years for manslaughter.
Still a better love story than twilight!
the jackazz guys did the highway dummy scene for real back in the cky days
Is there any news reports about the guy? Like what's his name? I'd like to do some research on this guy's history, it's not everyday you hear about crazy stories like what you mentioned, it's interesting
@@smol_fries7774 I'd love to give you the name of the person but I could get in trouble for harassment. The stories go even deeper. Once on the way home from school he invited us into his backyard. He shot a squirrel, gutted it out and grilled it on the family bbq grill while manically laughing at us. My buddy went home and told his Mom what happened. I didn't say anything to my parents, I figured this was what kids did around these hick towns for kicks, I was new to the area. Another time on a hot summer day, we decided to walk to the super market, the asphalt was hot and I could feel it cooking through my chuck taylor converse hi tops. The same crazy kids house was on the way. He saw us and said he wanted to say sorry for the last incident and asked us in his side yard for a cold beer (shouldn't of been drinking at 16). But I had one anyway. It cooled me off instantly. He asked "What to see something cool?". Before we could answer he dug up a shoebox of the dirt. He opened it up and it was a dead bird. Smelled awful. He danced around with it like it was a prize trophy or something. After that I always took the long way to school and back. Was mortified.
@@vectorhold6489 Damn, it's all very interesting, I feel like I've met crazy kids like that before but I just don't know of they're whereabouts to this day, and if you would've told me his name I wouldn't have said anything to anyone, I'm not a reporter, I just like investigating on crazy people and they're bizzare public history
My dad took me to see this when I was a kid. We both knew it wasn't a comedy or a kid's movie, and we both really enjoyed it.
Your dad is one fucked up individual for taking you to see this as a child. Lol, wtf?
Okay.
I like this movie, S and E saying he's miscast is ridiculous. This is Not a children's movie and he's being cast against type, that's the point.
I'll bet you anything that more than a few kids in my generation were taken to this by mistake. Mac Culkin = for the kiddies, amirite?
I'll bet you also that some of them considered it _an instruction manual._
I agree. It's like Siskel and Ebert are dictating which roles actors are allowed to play. Macauley Culkin is allowed to pursue whatever role he wants.
No surprise about Siskel & Ebert's comments on the film, as they tended to hate & trash horror films, & often gave ridiculous & stupid reasons as to why they thought a movie was bad.
Also, one of their criticisms was that the movie wasn't made for kids?? Uh, last I checked it was rated R.......................NOT PG! C'mon, S & E!
When I was 17 I had to move in with my father's family. My 11 year old cousin was very much like the Good Son. He even talked like him. He woke me up with a loaded weapon pointed up my nose and blamed stolen beers on me. He later grew up, robbed a hospital, and somehow ended up a marine. Now he looks like a serial killer.
Holy f*cking shit batman....
I had this neighbor kid who acted a lot like Henry, he was nice and friendly to his parents but when they weren’t around he was a sadistic foul mouthed little shit who often beat the crap out of his little brother and liked to torture animals among other things, I often had to babysit them, I really had to refrain from hitting him because he was such a violent little psycho, I wanted to tell his parents how twisted he was but I felt bad because they were such nice people, eventually his mother saw his messed up behavior during a fishing trip when he started stabbing a fish, and they got him professional help and he’s a better person now because of it.
That got dark quick. Sorry about that.
The Good Son was actually a really good movie. I always felt that this was just the dark version of Kevin from home alone. Good job Minty!
I can’t believe some people don’t like this movie. This movie is amazing, the acting and the concept is just crazy good lol
People didn’t like the “Home Alone Kid” playing in this role. They wanted him typecast
I really enjoy the movie! I have problems with it but I think the performances are fantastic and the third act is sublime. I never cared about Home Alone and all that so it was cool seeing Culkin play such a devious role, but Elijah has always been my favorite. Glad to see he's so involved with the horror genre now.
@@drphot6050 I can't believe grown people liked "Home Alone"! The kid proved to be a terrible actor in it. Things like this movie and My Girl showcased him as a much better actor.
This is one of those movies that people look at me funny when I talk about. Nobody remembers that Frodo and Kevin were in a movie together.
Yes!
Frodo and Kevin....
😄😂👍
Frodo journeyed to Mount Doom with Rudy
@@FFVison I always thought that Frodo went to Mount Doom with the greatest explorer ever: Mikey Walsh.
Yeah, I was trying to remember his last name in Goonies, but couldn't right away, so I went with Rudy. Besides Bran Walsh snapped his fingers and killed half of life in the Universe.
i've absolutely LOVED this movie since I was a kid. I remember cheering like I was at a football game when the mom let go of Kevin's hand. I'm sure to some its a controversial decision....but when you think about the fact that he just basically admitted to killing Richard AND attempted to kill his own mom, she knew what she had to do. Not an easy decision by any means, but necessary. This movie was wonderfully written, directed, and acted by the entire cast.
“I guess you could say that “The Good Son” is what you get if 2020 was a “Home Alone” movie.” Best line ever! 👍🏽💯
Agreed. I cracked up when Minty said that.
One head cannon I had was, Henry didn’t die but lived somehow and grew up to become Mark Whalburg’s character in FEAR. He, again, somehow survived and would go on to be the stalker in Prom Night or the villain in The Hitcher. Too many movie nights brought that into my head I suppose.
Not a bad idea
I do have a theory that he didn't die. Like he was "washed away" but actually ended up getting to shore and getting to safety.
You didn't mention Quinn Culcan, Macaulay's sister playing his sister in this movie?
Probably because it’s pretty common knowledge, and Minty tends to report on the more unknown facts / trivia behind the movies he reviews. I remember when it first came out in 1993... I was 10 years old and it was all anyone ever mentioned... and besides, they almost look like twins lol.
Wonder if she ever appeared in anything else besides The Good Son..?
@@SmokeyMcPotProductions Yeah, she voiced his little sister in "Wish Kid". I think that's all she did though. Then Rory who appears as Richard in the photograph went on to have his own career.
Not just his sister Quinn Culkin. The baby "Henry" drowned is Macs real brother Rory Culkin .
I have never ever cared about what Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert said about any movie.
Im glad i didn't even want to listen to their nitpicking bs.
I usually disagree with critics when it comes to movies
yeah, they almost talked my dad into taking me, my sister and brother out of seeing "Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend." jerks. I wonder if they get to critique Hell...
"Sky Den.... that "Hell" comment was a bit too far."
They hate slasher movies because they cant wrap their head around needless violence and try to take literal meaning from them like come on guys, nobody is seriously seeing Friday the 13th and thinking "well gee, everything's trying to kill me! Better stay inside! Thanks jason!

Culkin did an honestly excellent job in this role. His mannerisms and such were just spot-on.
HENRY: I am the personification of evil

Actually, I thought The Omen was better. But that's just me.
I don't know why people didn't like this film. I saw it back then and I liked it. I was about 12 or so at the time. I was also a fangirl of Elijah Woods and liked seeing an evil Culkin. lol I also didn't have an issue with Woods' character since he was depressed and down after his mother's death, so I can see him acting really serious because of that.
Macaulay Culkin: "It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again."
"PUT THE F*CKING LOTION IN THE BASKET!!!"
I'm obliged to recommend the song, "The Lotion In The Basket" by Daniel Vain.
Actually, that was Party Monster 😜
I first saw this movie when I was 8. I had seen a lot of Macauley Culkin movies so I assumed that this one was no different from his others or that he'd be the protagonist but boy was I wrong. I had been watching horror movies since I was like 3 or 4 years old so it didn't disturb me but it definitely showed me a different side of Culkin and how far his acting talents could go. Now I like to tell my friends about this movie and blow their minds lol
Even though the movie doesn't come out and specify whether Henry really is evil, has a mental illness or a personality disorder I think it's safe to say that Henry is a psychopath. His words and deeds fit the criteria, and the scary thing is that everything in this movie is plausible. That's why I still find it so chilling.
"So, you think you can fly?"
I love that there's a minty action figure.
@Grimium any of us can have an action figure made nowadays. Now, if his figure was a deal with Mego , or Matell I'd be very impressed but I don't think that's the case. I'm pretty sure he probably had them made himself.
@@ppiorkowski1502 I don't care about all that i just it's cool that he has one.

@@tomunderhill8037 I absolutely agree, though I wonder if Minty has a certain time frame in mind when it comes to his reviews... as most of his uploads are in films from the mid to late 80s and all throughout the 90s... and if memory serves, Party Monster was released in 2003 or 2004. Regardless, I think it would make for a great video.
Anyone who’s a fan of Party Monster really should check out the documentary or the “Shockumentary” as it’s called, that came out in 1999. The theatrical film was based off of a combination of it and James St James’ book Disco Bloodbath. But for anyone not too familiar with the story behind the Club Kids, the documentary goes a bit deeper than the movie, and it’ll really give you an appreciation for the choice in casting for the film. Culkin and Green nailed their roles in everything - from their looks and mannerisms, down to their vocabulary. Even the actor who played Angel looks like the real dudes freakin’ twin. Definitely worth checking out if you liked the movie.

I was 13 when this came out on vhs. My mother rented it for us (me, her, and my brother) to watch as soon as it released... at least at our local video store.
She raised me on horror (Stephen King, Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc), so I was skeptical in regards to this movie and how much it would "scare" me...

I really enjoyed this when I was a kid. It was creepy but that's why I loved it. Not because he was a sociopath, but rather it was cool seeing such a serious movie with kids where it wasn't just some paint by numbers drama where the kid isn't a big part of the film.
Macaulay Culkin's father, the jerk, was a big reason why Macaulay Culkin's career came to a sudden end. Hollywood studios just didn't want to deal with that jerk anymore.
.... Mac’s dad was Steve Martin?!
@@TheRealNormanBates that was my first thought too.
@@TheRealNormanBates narrator -- yes

Macaulay Culkin was brilliant in this movie!
I still remember my mother buying the VHS release with the first type of image on the cover.
She also thought that it might have been another Culkin's comedy movie given his mischievous look on the cover.
Although being 8/9 years old at the time, I was really impressed with Culkin's skills as an actor, changing from a comedy style to a more somber and chilling one and really liked Wood's performance as well.
I cannot say that I watched it often as other movies during my childhood but when I wanted a more 'serious' movie that was my choice. A very good movie overall.
Thank you very much Minty! Keep up your work!
I liked it when he fell off the cliff. Splat!
His scream as he's falling freaked me the hell out!
@
That's understandable but I just couldn't stop laughing because I hated that little evil bastard.
@@bigkmoviesandgames Oh, I hated him too, but that scream gave me chills! Sounds so evil.
@
Yeah I get what youre saying it is a bit haunting the way he sounds.
@@bigkmoviesandgames For sure!
I remember really enjoying this movie.
😮"KanGratulations" on getting your own action figure!!!! Way to go Minty!!
Congrats on the figure Minty. Shows how much people really love you.
You can't criticize Elijah's character for being too serious, when Elijah's character in the movie has JUST LOST HIS MOM!
I really like how Mac is gonna be in the new season of AHS. When I heard he was I immediately thought of the Good Son. Mac was excellent in that role.
Great movie from my childhood man I love the 90s
Heck ya! Havent seen this movie in ages. Almost forgot it existed. Awesome work.
The goodson underrated film
I assumed Elijah's character was serious because his mum died and he had to live with a psychopath? Pretty stressful & traumatic haha
The "Mr Highway" scene was filmed at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, NH. I grew up there and had a friend who lived near that road. Thankfully we never did anything like that!
I always considered this a Joker prequel ... He didn’t die , he washed up in Gotham Bay and crawled into a sewer pipe spending a decade under the Theater, Zoo, and Convention Center. The Circus came to town once a year; Until the Circus came to town for real.
I never forgot this film when I saw it. In hindsight its even more intriguing with what we know about Hollywood and The child actors
Good video! I hope you do Tommy Boy. Clerks and Class of 1984. :)
That boy Henry was a savage 💀
When I saw this pop up in my feed just now I literally said "awww shiiiit, dude!" to nobody. Excited for this 'un. Thanks, Minty!
similar to how Dakota Fanning's child characters would always act too mature. very unrealistic.
I haven't gotten this far but I wonder who's going to be talked about how the good son borrowed from The Bad Seed
The figure looks like Danny Divito lol. Love this channel.
1:05 I need to buy that, just to keep it in mint condition.
I've read that how they got Mac to do the fall stunt was that his Dad promised he would get a BB gun. And yes Mac got the BB gun.
I read that too
Eijah Woods character was prob so serious because he just lost his mom. Not to many kids could lose a parent and then act like they are having a great day at Six Flags unless they are deranged.
i found the portrayal of his character pleasing and exact.
Also filmed in Minnesota along the north shore of Lake Superior.
This movie and The Bad Seed were the more effective scary movies from my childhood.
In my opinion, The Bad Seed was better.
I could see the pitch now: "What if Kevin Mccallister was evil on purpose?"
I found this movie on HBO. It was creepy, but the ending made me laugh.
you scare me
Was it his froggy scream that made you laugh?

The transformation is Kevin to Henry, all the way to Jigsaw. The Kevin McAllister shared universe.
That home alone Lord of the rings crossover got weird.
I just watched this two weeks ago!! I swear, there have been several times when I watch a movie, and then Minty soon after makes a video about it!
Always had a soft spot for this movie.
I saw this film growing up, and it shows the dark side of Kevin McAllister from Home Alone.
Do RADIO FLYER!!!
I thought this movie was awesome. I'm disappointed it didn't do better when it came out. Both boys did a great job
in their roles as actors.
Congratulations on your action figure.
One of my favorite movies...both young men did a fantastic job!!!
When I saw the trailer for The Good Son in 1993 I knew it was going to be creepy. And it was a favorite.
My son is convinced that Kevin McCallister grows up to become DeadPool! 😂🤔
What the he'll?!. 😂
@@delete---7593 Yeah, he says they have the same sense of humor, odd-ball stunts are part of their fighting style and they both break the fourth wall. My kid was probably around 10yrs old and we were watching Home Alone when he was like “Wait... This is Dead Pool! Is this the real origins story of Dead Pool?!?!?” 🤣
About the character of Mark: To be fair, his mother had just died. There aren't very many children who would act playful and childish following such a traumatic experience.
the part with the scissors. MARK! WHAT ARE YOU DOING,, DAD HELP ME! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
